Near-infrared (NIR) II region (1000–1700 nm) lighting sources possess special potential for temperature sensing and quantitative composition analysis. However, it is a challenge to tune the luminescence toward such long wavelength NIR-II emission. Herein, Cr 4+ ions occupation is designed and verified in olivine-type CaYGaO 4 as [CrO 4 ] tetrahedron by site occupancy confinement. Under 620 nm red light excitation, the phosphors display broadband NIR-II emission centered at 1330 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 233 nm, resulting from spin-allowed 3 T 2 to 3 A 2 transition of Cr 4+ ions in T d symmetry. The optical thermometry application is demonstrated by decoding the spectral shift and decay times varying with temperature, and the maximum relative sensitivities are 5.82% and 0.78% K −1 , respectively. Furthermore, a flexible film containing CaYGaO 4 :Cr 4+ is fabricated to implement the non-invasive detections of fillet temperature and NH 3 concentration in ammonia. This work represents a step toward developing next-generation NIR-II luminescence materials and widens non-invasive detection applications.

Red-emitting CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ phosphors with different doping contents have been synthesized by solid-state reaction using calcium hydride as a calcium source. The emergence of persistent luminescence in CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ was originated from electron traps introduced by the partial substitutions of O in N sites to form positive trap levels at low Eu2+ concentration. The broad thermoluminescence emission bands indicated multiple trap levels, in which the shallow traps were mainly responsible for the red persistent luminescence; besides, the deep trap electrons could be efficiently released under extra NIR (980 nm) stimulation, resulting in enhanced photoluminescence and phosphorescence. It is expected that the enhanced emission under UV-NIR simultaneous excitation may be a promising technique to investigate the trap distributions in optical energy storage materials.

The rational design of the dimension and geometry of a plasmonic semiconductor cocatalyst is vitally important for efficient utilization of near-infrared (NIR) light and superior photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Herein, hollow cubic CuSe@CdS composites with different sizes and strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) were prepared by selenizing size-tunable Cu2O templates and loading CdS nanoparticles. The size of hollow cubic CuSe can affect the surface area and the conduction band potential through the size effect, regulating the carrier behavior of the CuSe@CdS heterojunction. The CuSe@CdS composites show enhanced and wide absorption in the full spectrum due to the LSPR effect of CuSe. Meanwhile, the composites show excellent photocatalytic hydrogen capacity in the full spectrum in a 0.35 M Na2S/0.25 M Na2SO3 sacrificial reagent solution. The best hydrogen production rate of CSCE2 is 1.518 mmol g−1 h−1 (5.54 times higher than that of CdS) under Vis light (780 > λ > 420 nm) irradiation and 0.28 mmol g−1 h−1 under NIR light (λ > 780 nm) illumination. Interestingly, the photocatalytic activity for H2 under Vis-NIR light (λ > 420 nm) is about 3 times (up to 4.45 mmol g−1 h−1) higher than that without NIR light assistance, due to the photothermal effect. Various analyses and DFT calculations demonstrate that the p–n heterojunction formed in the composites consists of p-type CuSe and n-type CdS, which achieves efficient carrier transfer and separation under the synergistic effect of the size effect and the photothermal effect. In addition, the expansion of the photocatalytic performance to the NIR range is mainly due to the “hot-electron” injection mechanism induced by the LSPR effect of CuSe. The reasonable design coupled with the plasmonic materials offers a new path to achieving the highly efficient conversion of solar energy to hydrogen energy.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) combined with near-infrared (NIR) phosphors are rapidly becoming important light sources for food safety, anti-counterfeiting and biological imaging due to non-destructive and non-toxic advantages. Single-phase materials with multi-mode luminescence under different stimuli are crucial for the development and applications of smart NIR phosphors. Here, we have developed multifunctional Cr3+ activated MgGa2O4 (MGO:Cr3+) phosphors with simultaneous photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence for NIR sensing. Under 470 nm excitation, the phosphors can produce emission bands from 650 to 850 nm. Meanwhile, the flexible devices based on phosphors can exhibit strong emissions in response to mechanical deformation, such as shock and friction. In addition, optical manometers based on luminescence from phosphors can achieve pressure sensing from 7 to 64 KPa. More intriguingly, we combined the MGO:Cr3+ phosphor with a blue LED chip to fabricate an NIR phosphor-converted LED for anti-counterfeiting and biological tissue penetration. Our results suggest that the multifunctional NIR phosphors with simultaneous photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence have potential applications in various sensing devices.

High-performance near-infrared (NIR) light sources are highly sought after in advanced spectroscopy techniques, driving the development of NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). Escalating the luminescence intensity and thermal stability of NIR-emitting phosphors, which is a core component of NIR pc-LEDs, is of paramount importance. Herein, chemical unit cosubstitution and cosolvent addition tactics were implemented to simultaneously boost the NIR luminescence performance of the synthesized phosphors. The replacement of [Sc3+-Sc3+] for [Ca2+-Zr4+] in Ca4ZrGe3O12:Cr3+ likely reduces the antisite defects and offers a more rigid crystal structure. As a result, the emitting intensity is reinforced significantly, along with a remarkable improvement in thermal stability, acquiring 65% of the initial luminescence at 423 K compared with 42% for the primal sample. Moreover, the introduction of H3BO3 further enhances NIR luminescence while maintaining a favorable thermal resistance. The encapsulated NIR pc-LED carries an impressive output power of 71.8 mW at 300 mA and a conversion efficiency up to 15.6% at 10 mA. The practical presentations in food checking, imaging, and detection manifest that Ca3.5ScZr0.5Ge3O12:Cr3+,H3BO3 is a promising material for spectroscopy-based technologies.

Graphical Improved responsivity : GeSe micro-sheets and micro-belts were synthesized by a chemical orientation growth method in 1-octadecene solvent and oleic acid solvent, respectively. The photodetectors based on single micro-belt showed a broadband spectral photoresponse with high responsivity (5562 A/W) and detectivity (3.01×10 12 Jones). It demonstrates significant application potential in the visible and NIR photodetection. GeSe micro-sheets and micro-belts have been synthesized by a facile one-pot wet chemical method in 1-octadecene solvent and oleic acid solvent, respectively. The adsorption of more oleic acid molecules on the (002) plane promoted growth along [010] direction of the GeSe micro-belts and limited carrier transport in this direction, resulting in higher carrier concentration and mobility of the GeSe micro-belts. The performance of the photodetectors based on the single GeSe micro-sheet and the single GeSe micro-belt was investigated under illumination at 532 nm, 980 nm and 1319 nm. Both, photodetectors based on a single GeSe micro-sheet and a single GeSe micro-belt, exhibit a high photoresponse, short response/recovery times, and long-term durability. Moreover, the photodetector based on a single GeSe micro-belt displays a broadband response with a high responsivity (5562 A/W at 532 nm, 1546 A/W at 980 nm) and detectivity (3.01×10 12 Jones at 532 nm, 8.38×10 11 Jones at 980 nm). These excellent characteristics render single GeSe micro-belts very interesting for use as highly efficient photodetectors, especially in the NIR region.

Transition metal ion-activated phosphors are promising candidates for broadband near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy applications. However, achieving high external quantum efficiency (EQE) and good thermal stability in low-dimensional halide perovskites has presented challenge. Herein, a design strategy based on cerium doping has been developed for realizing high-efficiency broadband NIR tetravalent molybdenum (Mo 4+ ) luminescence to overcome multivalent Mo-related lattice defects and self-absorption. Particularly, Ce 4+ , Mo 4+ -codoped Cs 2 TeCl 6 shows broadband NIR emissions ranging from 800–1300 nm with a full width at half-maximum of 186 nm, high EQE > 50% and good thermal stability (85%@150 °C). Experimental and theoretical studies verify the synergistic effects of breakdown of site symmetry, reduction of lattice defects and relaxation of the spin-selection rule of Mo 4+ . Moreover, gas sensing of toxic toluene with low detection limit and high sensitivity is presented due to strong molecular interaction-induced luminescence quenching. These findings provide new opportunities for broadband NIR spectroscopy applications.

Broadband and thermally robust near-infrared (NIR) emitters are essential for advanced photonic applications from night-vision imaging to biological sensing and spectroscopy. However, transition-metal-activated phosphors face an intrinsic coupling between emission bandwidth and thermal stability, with ultrabroad spectra accompanied by severe thermal quenching. Here, we demonstrate a dual-site occupancy strategy mitigating this trade-off by enabling Ni 2+ to occupy two crystallographically distinct octahedral sites in double perovskite Ca 2 AlTaO 6 . The optimized Ca 2 AlTaO 6 :Ni 2+ phosphor exhibits broadband NIR-II emission (1050–1650 nm) with a 225 nm full width at half maximum, retaining 61% of room-temperature luminescence intensity at 423 K. Spectral deconvolution, lifetime analysis, and structural characterization reveal the concentration-dependent emission peak red-shift (1260 → 1310 nm) originates from dynamic Ni 2+ redistribution between the two sites, with controllable spectral broadening. This site-selective emission mechanism provides a reliable route for tunable NIR-II spectral engineering. A phosphor-converted LED based on a commercial red excitation chip delivers efficient NIR-II output, validated in night-vision imaging, biological tissue transillumination, and qualitative chemical identification. These results establish dual-site occupancy as a viable, generalizable design principle for broadband, thermally stable NIR emitters, with direct relevance to photonic light-source engineering.

Rare-earth nanoparticles represent a promising class of NIR-IIc emitters for deep-tissue bioimaging beyond 1700 nm; however, the practical application remains limited by their suboptimal luminescence brightness and the low quantum efficiency (QE) of current detectors. Here we report a dual-sensitizer rare-earth nanoprobe (YbEr:Tm) that strategically steers Er-Er energy migration into the favorable 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 13/2 channel, yielding a 43.5-fold enhancement of Tm 3+ emission in the NIR-IIc window. The resulting YbEr:Tm nanoprobes afford 180 µm spatial resolution through 1.5 cm of thoracic muscle, even under the constraints of a low-QE extended-range InGaAs detector. Building on this brightness, we achieve the first dynamic multiplexed NIR-IIc in vivo bioimaging by exploiting the lifetime disparity between rare-earth nanoprobes and PbS quantum dots. Furthermore, an implantable three-plex NIR-IIc optical cipher is devised, in which distinct nanoprobes with orthogonal lifetimes and spectral profiles enable information encryption within subcutaneous tissue and real-time, noninvasive retrieval.

Rapid monitoring and effective elimination of pathogenic bacteria in the environment are crucial for ensuring public health and safety. However, designing an integrated platform with both rapid detection and sterilization capabilities remains challenging. Herein, multifunctional hydrogel (NH 2 -NM@IR780/OSA/MBG hydrogel) triggered by a single NIR laser was constructed for rapid detection and synergistic photothermal/photodynamic sterilization. The NH 2 -NM@IR780/OSA/MBG hydrogel was prepared via a Schiff base reaction between NH 2 -NM@IR780 and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), followed by the incorporation of 4-methylumbelliferyl beta-D-glucuronide (MBG). In vitro experiments demonstrated that the hydrogel responds to enzymes secreted by bacteria to generate blue fluorescence, achieving rapid detection of bacteria. Meanwhile, IR780 in NH 2 -NM@IR780 hydrogel under 808 nm laser irradiation not only generated abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) for photodynamic therapy, but also produced a large amount of heat to kill bacteria. Through the above process, a single NIR could simultaneously regulate the photodynamic and photothermal performance to achieve efficient sterilization, which effectively improved the synergistic effect between the two therapeutic modes. Therefore, our strategy provides a novel way to achieve rapid bacterial detection and efficient sterilization. Graphical abstract

Bacterial infection, oxidative stress, and persistent inflammation impede wound repair, and antibiotic-dependent treatment may promote the emergence of bacterial resistance. We developed an infection-adaptive, near infrared (NIR) regulated self-healing hydrogel dressing (PACH) comprising polydopamine anchored silver nanostructures (PDA@Ag) within a dynamic Schiff base network of carboxymethyl chitosan and oxidized hyaluronic acid. Because Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) secretes hyaluronidase during infection, the oxidized hyaluronic acid network was designed to undergo infection-adaptive degradation; NIR-induced photothermal heating further loosened and disassembled the network, thereby increasing the accessibility of PDA@Ag-related antibacterial components. PDA@Ag exhibited enhanced NIR absorption and photothermal performance (ΔT _max = 35.7 °C at 0.75 W/cm 2 ). PACH protected fibroblasts against H₂O₂ induced oxidative injury, promoted fibroblast migration, and attenuated inflammatory responses in lipopolysaccharide stimulated macrophages. In vitro, PACH exhibited potent antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against MRSA, with 808 nm irradiation reducing relative bacterial viability to 0.001%. In an MRSA infected full-thickness wound model, PACH with NIR reduced relative bacterial viability to 1.42 ± 0.59% on Day 3 and residual wound area to 2.518 ± 0.97% on Day 14, and enhanced re-epithelialization, collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and macrophage polarization toward a reparative phenotype without evident systemic toxicity. PACH is therefore a bio based hydrogel that forms in water at room temperature without organic solvents and provides antibacterial treatment without conventional antibiotics. These findings support an integrated dressing strategy for bacterial control and wound repair. Download: Download high-res image (148KB) Download: Download full-size image
