Furan, which has been identified as possibly carcinogenic for humans, can be induced to different food items by thermal treatment. In accordance with the previous studies and risks associated with prevalence of furan in food, it is necessary to be acknowledged of amounts of furan formed in different thermally processed foods for human awareness. In this study, Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS) was optimized for simultaneous determination of furan, furfural, 2-methylfuran and 2-pentylfuran for the first time from different dried fruits and roasted nuts. The method was proved to be valid for determination of all analytes at 50 °C for 25 min, stirring at 700 rpm and 20% NaCl (W/V) using 50/30 μm divinlybenzene/carboxen/polysimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) fibre. All analytes were baseline-separated at HP 5-MS column in less than 13 min and obtained results have shown prevalence of furan, furfural and 2-pentylfuran in the studied matrices; however, 2-pentylfuran was more prevalent in the roasted nuts than dried fruits and 2-methylfuran has not shown considerable prevalence in both matrices. Moreover, this method was validated in terms of linearity, precision, recovery, specificity, limit of detection and limit of quantification depending on analytes and sample matrices. Hence, the present method was proved to be highly sensitive, specific and robust with good precision and accuracy and suitable for monitoring these furan derivatives in the studied matrices.

In the past decade, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) as green and sustainable extraction solvents with great potential for the efficient extraction of bioactive compounds from the plants are emerging. In this study, a microwave-assisted technology is used to prepare natural deep eutectic solvents. And natural deep eutectic solvents as pretreatment solvents coupled with microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) for isolating essential oil (EO) derived from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is investigated. To improve the essential oil yield of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) as a target, various factors affecting extraction efficiency including the type and amount of natural deep eutectic solvents, pretreatment time, pretreatment temperature and hydrodistillation (HD) time are discussed and optimized through central composite design (CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal conditions are as follows: natural deep eutectic solvent composed of choline chloride and oxalic acid (molar ratio with 1:1) as a pretreatment solvent, an amount of 60 g, a pretreatment time of 5 min, a pretreatment temperature of 84 ºC, a hydrodistillation time of 76 min. Under the optimum conditions, the highest essential oil yield of 0.85% is achieved. Additionally, the essential oil is analyzed by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), with a total of 49 compounds being identified. Through combining natural deep eutectic solvents with a microwave-assisted hydrodistillation technique, this work provides an eco-friendly extraction way of isolating essential oil, which boosts development in the monitoring other spice quality field.

A reliable, simple and fast method was developed to detect four phthalic acid esters (PAEs) including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) in mine tailings based on the accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (ASE/GC–MS). Evaluation of extraction parameters including choice of extraction solvent, temperature, extraction time, and number of extraction cycles showed that dichloromethane, 120 °C, 3 min, and 2 cycles were optimal, respectively. Under these conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) values were in the range of 1.2–2.0 µg kg –1 and 3.0–4.6 µg kg –1 , respectively, and precision of the analytical data, RSD ≤ 7.0% were determined. This method was used to analyze the PAEs-spiked mine tailing samples (100 µg kg –1 of each analyte). Acceptable recovery values of 71.3–77.1%, 100–110%, 105–116%, and 101–115% were obtained for DMP, DEP, DBP and DEHP, respectively. The technique was also successfully applied for the extraction of the PAEs in real samples collected from mine tailing pond. Finally, stable C and H isotope analyses were conducted using GC coupled to isotope ratio MS to investigate effect of the ASE method on H and C isotopic compositions of the target analytes. Results showed that the ASE procedure did not lead to significant isotope fractionation of the compounds. Overall, the major advantages of this method are: automated operation, high sensitivity, short extraction time, less solvent consumption, and compatibility with a variety of detecting equipment. Combined with CSIA, it could be used to study the degradation mechanisms of target PAEs in mine tailing environments.

Summary Four types of carbohydrates, including Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide, Dendrobium aphyllum polysaccharide and β-glucans from yeast and barley, were examined, and their structures were found to mainly contain 1,4-linked-β- d -Glc p . Artificially simulated gastrointestinal digestion was conducted to characterise the changes of molecular weight, reducing sugars and released free monosaccharides by high-performance liquid chromatography, kits and the newly developed gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry (MS)/MS analysis, which indicated that high molecular weight and complex spatial structures contributed to delayed monosaccharide release following exposure to digestive solution. The spatial structures of carbohydrates were changed during gastric digestion, but their primary structures were destroyed during intestinal digestion. Additionally, for the developed 7890A/7000 GC-TQ/MS-MS, the new analytical method was successfully used to analyse very low concentrations of monosaccharides in the simulated gastrointestinal digestive system.

The present study aims to improve the yields and selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons in the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass by the addition of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which has a higher hydrogen-carbon ratio than biomass. We have investigated the thermal decomposition behavior and kinetics, as well as the product distribution, of the co-pyrolysis of biomass (cellulose and pine sawdust) and plastic (LDPE) both with and without a catalyst (HZSM-5) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Our results, based on the weight loss difference (△ W ), show that there is a positive and synergistic interaction between the biomass and LDPE. After the addition of LDPE, the synergistic reactions inhibited catalyst coking effectively and decreased the formation of solid residues. In addition, the ZSM-5 catalyst improved the reaction activity and reduced the activation energy, although the reaction mechanism is not changed. At the same time, the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method was used to fit the kinetic data for both non-catalytic and catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and LDPE, and the activation energies ( E a ) of the cellulose + LDPE + catalyst and pine + LDPE + catalyst systems were found to be 168.81 and 185.87 kJ/mol, respectively. The co-pyrolysis of biomass and LDPE effectively improved the yield and selectivity of aromatics and increased the selectivity for benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene (BTXE). The addition of LDPE can effectively improve the selectivity for naphthalene family products (methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene) in the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass and decrease the content of aromatic hydrocarbons larger than C10.

A method based on simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry/olfactometry (GC-MS/O) was developed for the analysis of volatile profiles in soy sauce. Its optimum operating conditions were as follows: 100 mL soy sauce plus 100 mL saturated brine; 2 h extraction using 50 mL dichloromethane. Eighty-eight volatile compounds were identified. Of these, 26 aroma-active compounds were detected by GC-O including 3-(methylthio)propanal, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, 2-methoxyphenol, 2-methylbutanoic acid, 2,3-butanedione, phenylacetaldehyde, 2-ethyl-6-methylpyrazine, 3-methylbutanal, 2-methylbutanal, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and 2-methyl-1-butanol (which occurred at a high odor intensity in both high-salt liquid-state fermentation soy sauce (HLFSS) and low-salt solid-state fermentation soy sauce (LSFSS). SDE analysis of the odorless soy sauce indicated 12 volatiles (mainly Strecker aldehydes and α-dicarbonyl compounds). Thus, the proportions of these compounds (1.94–54.07 %) shown in previous GC-MS results could result from thermal degradation of non-volatile compounds in soy sauce. Especially, the contribution of 3-methylbutanal, 2-methylbutanal, phenylacetaldehyde, 3-(methylthio)propanal, and 2,3-butanedione to the aroma of soy sauce could be overestimated by conventional SDE-GC-O. With a full consideration of such limitations, this study will improve the application of SDE on aroma analysis of complex food matrix.

Lipids are key aroma contributors in meat products. However, the role of different lipids in the presence of aroma compounds in roasted pigeons has not been studied. The formation of aroma compounds and lipids during the circulating non-fried roasting of pigeons was investigated. The results presented that 18 aroma compounds, including 5-methy-2,3-diethylpyrazine, were identified as key aroma compounds. A total of 6324 lipids were classed into 47 categories, such as phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and triglyceride (TG). Nine lipids, containing PA(P-20:0/22:4(7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z)) and LPC 16:0-SN1, showed promise as potential biomarkers for discriminating differential pigeons using OPLS-DA. PC (13.76%), TG (13.58%), and their products were major lipids, among which TG 16:0 16:0 18:2, LPC 18:2-SN1, and PC 18:1_18:1 played a crucial role in the presence of aroma compounds. Interestingly, the linoleic acid , an important aroma contributor, was predominantly bonded to the sn-2 position of phospholipid and sn-3 position of neutral lipids.

Green MgO-based banana peel activated carbon (MgO-BPAC) with distinctive pore structure features was synthesized with magnesium nitrate as the template and activator. A novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was prepared by fixing MgO-BPAC on the surface of a stainless-steel wire using silicone sealant. The fiber was coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for headspace-solid phase microextraction-GC-MS (HS-SPME-GC-MS) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The laboratory-constructed fiber showed good extraction efficiency for naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and anthracene and the corresponding analytical parameters were determined. The method provided low detection limits (0.86–2.12 ng/L) with satisfactory replicate extractions of one fiber (relative standard deviations ≤ 10.30%) and fiber to fiber reproducibility (relative standard deviations ≤ 13.92%). To validate the performance of the homemade fibers, this approach was used for the determination of the PAHs (0.05 μg/L) in spiked environmental water samples and good recoveries (92.67%–114.45%) were obtained. This study introduces a biocarbon material as a functional fiber coating component which adsorbs aromatic constituents through hydrophobic interactions.

Higher alcohols are key factors affecting sensory quality and post-drinking comfort of alcoholic beverages. A strategy combining solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE-GC-MS) was established to analyze the metabolism pattern of higher alcohols in rat plasma after gavage of 4 common alcoholic beverages including huangjiu, baijiu, wine and brandy. 7 mL of dichloromethane was determined as the optimal extraction condition, and 8 higher alcohols were precisely quantified with detection limits of 1.82−11.65 μg/L, recoveries of 89.07 %−110.89 % and fine repeatability. The fastest absorption and elimination rates of plasma total higher alcohols were observed in baijiu and huangjiu group, respectively, and the highest peak concentration was found in brandy group. Additionally, the metabolic rate of plasma isoamyl alcohol in huangjiu group was faster than that in wine group at the same intragastric administration dosage. This study may provide potential insight for evaluation of alcoholic beverage quality.

Vortex-assisted liquid-liquid micro-extraction (VALLME) was applied for eliminating the matrix effect and improving the sensitivity of eugenol determination by headspace solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) in fish samples. Under the optimum condition of VALLME and HS-SPME, the good linearity of eugenol in fish samples was obtained in the range from 15.0 to 750.0 μg/kg. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for eugenol were 0.5 and 1.5 μg/kg, respectively. The recovery of eugenol was ranging from 95.4 to 119.9% and the relative standard deviation (RSD %) for eugenol was lower than 20%. The results turned out that VALLME followed HS-SPME-GC-MS was a simple, rapid, and accurate method for the determination of eugenol in fish samples. The levels of eugenol in different parts of real samples were tested by the developed method, and the results concluded that the developed method was compatible with GC-MS analysis with long-term application and had excellent repeatability, linearity, and sensitivity.

This study investigates the consistency of quality between the traditional decoction (TD) of Pheretima aspergillum and its dispensing granule decoction (DGD) by examining their chemical composition and antithrombotic efficacy. We first determined the nucleoside components, protein content, and volatile compounds in 10 batches of TD and 9 batches of DGD sourced from three manufacturers using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV–vis spectrophotometry, and gas chromatography ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). Next, we assessed antithrombotic efficacy by measuring the relative length of tail thrombosis and calculating the thrombus inhibition rates at 24 and 48 h. Our comprehensive analysis revealed that the concentrations of hypoxanthine, uridine, inosine, adenosine, and proteins in TD were significantly higher than those in DGD. Moreover, the types and concentrations of volatile compounds in TD and DGD exhibited substantial differences, with 19 volatile compounds identified as differentially present between the two decoctions. Despite these compositional differences, both decoction types demonstrated equivalent antithrombotic efficacy. Overall, the quality of DGD from manufacturers A and B aligned closely with that of TD. However, TD exhibited a higher overall quality compared to DGD, while both decoctions maintained consistent antithrombotic efficacy.

Almonds are a commonly consumed nut. They possess significantof nutritional and health benefitsand are commonly processed by roasting. This study aimed to investigatthe effects of roasting on the compound composition and antioxidant activity of almonds. Metabolomics analysis, performed via UPLC-QTOF/MS, and fatty acid analysis, conducted via GC–MS, employed, and the results demonstrated a significant increase in antioxidant activity of post-roasting and in vitro digestion, ranging from 1.16 to 3.44 times. Untargeted metabolomics identified a total of 172 compounds, with notable differences observed in organic oxides, fatty acids, and their derivatives. Correlation analysis identified fatty acids as the primary influencers of changes in antioxidant activity following roasting. Taken together, these findings suggest that roasting enhances the antioxidant activity of almonds, primarily due to alterations in fatty acid analogs, thereby providing valuable insights into optimizing almond consumption for health benefits.
