Nanoflower-like NiLa-Ni2P/C electrocatalysts derived from in-situ La-doped Ni-MOF for enhanced alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction performance

Xiaohan Liu,Youhe Wang,Zhengyang Liu,Zhehui Zhang,Long Wang,Guanqi Li,Yulin He,Qingyi Yuan,Zifeng Yan

Transition metal-carbon compounds derived from Ni-MOFs show promise as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) water electrolysis but suffer from limited reactivity and stability. Elemental doping is a key strategy to enhance both catalytic activity and durability. Here, we present an effective approach to simultaneously improve catalyst performance and structural robustness by in-situ doping a Ni-MOF precursor with La. Using a La-doped nanoflower-structured NiLa-MOF precursor as a self-sacrificing template, we obtained a highly active and stable nanoflower-like NiLa-Ni 2 P/C electrocatalyst via pyrolysis and phosphidation.Uniform La doping into the MOF precursor not only promotes nanoflower-like morphology formation and enhances stability, but also tunes the electronic structure of Ni active centres, markedly improving catalytic reactivity. Consequently, the NiLa-Ni 2 P/C catalyst delivers exceptional HER performance: only 167 mV overpotential and 90 mV·dec −1 Tafel slope at 10 mA·cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH. It also shows superior long-term stability over undoped Ni-Ni 2 P/C at the same current density. This work provides new insights and practical strategies for rare-earth-element-based HER catalysts in alkaline water electrolysis.

Fluoride removal in batch and column systems using La-MOF derived from waste PET: Experimental analysis, DFT calculation, and LCA evaluation

Xingyu Zhang,Runyang Liu,Xiaoling Cheng,Bo Chen,Fanchao Xu,Yulai Wang,Jianjun Lian,Qiaoping Kong

Fluoride-containing wastewater has posed severe threats to the ecological environment and human health. Current mainstream treatment technologies still suffer from difficulties in the deep purification of low-concentration fluoride, poor adaptability to complex actual wastewater, and high treatment costs. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly and cost-effective functional materials is a critical approach to achieve efficient treatment of such wastewater. This study addresses this need by synthesizing a lanthanum-based metal-organic framework (La-MOF) adsorbent through hydrothermal method by using terephthalic acid derived from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics as organic ligand. The synthesized La-MOF exhibited stable fluoride ions removal performance across a wide pH range, achieving 90% removal efficiency and maximum adsorption capacity of 52.0 mg/g at optimal pH 4. The adsorption process of fluoride ions by La-MOF was accurately represented by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that elevated temperatures were conducive to the adsorption of fluoride ions. Competitive ion experiments show that PO 4 3− , HCO 3 − , ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline have a certain impact on the removal of fluoride ions when their concentrations exceed 20 mg/L. Besides, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and coordination are the primary mechanisms for fluoride removal. Life cycle assessment shows that using PET as a synthetic material for La-MOF reduces the environmental footprint of waste plastics and also lowers the cost of synthetic materials. Fixed-bed column dynamic tests with real wastewater demonstrated that La-MOF maintained good treatment efficiency over five cycles. The results indicate that the La-MOF not only exhibits excellent removal performance toward low-concentration fluoride, but also achieves the synergistic treatment goal of “treating waste with waste”, demonstrating a very broad application prospect.

Potassium-regulated LA–GG composite hydrogels as dual-network gelling matrices: gelation mechanism, structural characterization, and application in capsule-based delivery

Yuting Dong,Guohui Zeng,Yafang Shi,Zhibin Yang,Xingyong Liu,Hongjie Yang,Jing Ye,Meitian Xiao

The unclear gelation mechanism of K + in low-acyl gellan gum (LA)-guar gum (GG) hydrogel has hindered their further applications. In the present study, the critical role of K + concentration in regulating the structure-property relationships of LA-GG composite hydrogels was elucidated. Multiscale characterizations (texture analysis, rheology, zeta potential, density functional theory, etc.) demonstrated that the gelation process of LA-GG was primarily regulated by K + through electrostatic shielding of the carboxyl groups in LA. An optimal K + concentration of 0.6% ( w / v ) maximized the textural properties of the LA-GG gel, yielding a gel strength of 140.83 ± 5.34 g, chewiness of 213.77 ± 11.45 g, and cohesiveness of 0.90 ± 0.04 g, while concurrently enhancing its viscoelasticity. This improvement was attributed to K + -mediated electrostatic screening, which reduced intermolecular repulsion, promoted closer polysaccharide association, and facilitated the formation of a dense and homogeneous hydrogen-bonded network between LA and GG. Con v ersely, K + concentrations exceeding 0.6% ( w / v ) led to charge screening saturation, inducing inhomogeneous aggregation that compromised network uniformity and impaired gel performance. When utilized as capsule matrices, the 0.6% K + -mediated LA-GG gel exhibited superior gastrointestinal stability, with a minimal quercetin leakage of only 10.01% prior to reaching the simulated colon. In vitro digestion confirms its potential for targeted colonic delivery. This work establishes clear structure-function relationships in ion-regulated polysaccharide gels, offering guidance for designing controlled-release carriers for functional food applications.

Fluoride remediation from on-site wastewater using optimized bauxite nanocomposite (Bx-Ce-La@500): Synthesis maximization, and mechanism of F─ removal

Sikpaam Issaka Alhassan,Haiying Wang,Yingjie He,Lvji Yan,Yuxin Jiang,Bichao Wu,Ting Wang,Haiying Gang,Lei Huang,Linfeng Jin,Yongsheng Chen

Bauxite is a widely available Al-O-rich mineral with great potential for abating fluoride. However, low adsorption capacity, a narrow workable pH range, and a lack of clarity on the best removal mechanism hinder its application. In this work, a highly efficient bauxite nanocomposite (Bx-Ce-La@500) was synthesized via doping and pyrolysis , and its fluoride adsorption in industrial wastewater was examined. Doping Ce/La synergistically improved the fluoride adsorption affinity of the composite (from pH PZC 8.0 ~ 10.0) and enhanced the •OH. The materials were characterized by SEM-EDS, BET, XRD, and TGA while XPS, FTIR, and DFT were used to investigate the mechanism of fluoride sorption . Results show that Bx-Ce-La@ 500 has a positive zeta potential of 26.3–23.1 mV from pH 1~ 10. The Langmuir model was the best fit with a maximum adsorption capacity of 88.13 mg/g and removal efficiency up to 100% in 50 ppm F − solution. The high F − removal was attributed to the enhanced surface affinity and the formation of adequate •OH on the material. Except for carbonate and phosphate ions, other ions exhibited negligible effects and the selective removal of F − in real wastewater was high. The main mechanism of adsorption was the ligand/ion exchange and electrostatic attraction.

Gd, La co-doped CeO2 as an active support for Fe2O3 to enhance hydrogen generation via chemical looping water gas shift

Zhihua Gao,Fengyan Fu,Zhaozhi Zhang,Lili Niu,Min Jin,Jian Zhang,Zekun Zhao

Support materials are indispensable to promote the durability of iron oxides for chemical looping applications. However, the dilution effect of supports on the active phase would lead to decreased bulk oxygen conduction, thus leading to compromised activity. Here, we propose several Gd 3+ , La 3+ and Nd 3+ doped CeO 2 as active supports for iron oxides and investigate the support effect to improve hydrogen generation via chemical looping water gas shift . The characterizations show that the dopants improve the oxygen vacancy concentration in the CeO 2 lattice and Fe 2 O 3 /Ce 0.8 Gd 0.1 La 0.1 O 2-δ exhibits the most oxygen vacancy concentration among all the oxygen carriers. Pulse reactions of oxygen carriers show that an abundance of oxygen vacancy concentration can promote the lattice oxygen transfer in bulk, thus contributing to improved redox reactions . The high oxygen conductivity mitigates the dilution effect on the active phase. Therefore, Fe 2 O 3 /Ce 0.8 Gd 0.1 La 0.1 O 2-δ shows the highest hydrogen yield (∼9.49 mmol −1 .g −1 ) and hydrogen generation rate (∼0.632 mmol.g −1 .min −1 ) with only a slight decrease at 650 °C over 100 cycles. Overall, this work highlights the influence of support properties on the redox reactivity of iron oxides for chemical looping applications.

MOF-derived NiM@C catalysts (M = Co, Mo, La) for in-situ hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols to cycloalkanes/cyclohexanol

Minghao Zhou,Yaqi Xue,Fei Ge,Jing Li,Haihong Xia,Junming Xu,Jun Zhao,Changzhou Chen,Jianchun Jiang

MOF-derived Ni-based bimetallic catalysts were found to be effective for the in-situ hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived monophenols and dimers with isopropanol as the hydrogen-donor solvent (without external hydrogen). The synergistic effects of bimetallic catalysts were studied, and their catalytic properties afforded the best conversion rate of phenols and cyclohexanol/cycloalkane yields. The detailed physicochemical characterization was conducted by means of XRD, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, and pyridine-IR analysis. The effects of reaction temperature (200–260 ℃) and reaction time (2–5 h) on the performance of lignin-derived monophenols and dimers were investigated. During the in-situ hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols, the steric effects and the effects of various functional groups, notably methoxy groups, were investigated. In-situ conversion of lignin-derived phenols with isopropanol was achieved over different Ni/M ratios of NiM@C (M = Co, Mo, and La) catalysts, from which NiLa 0.33 @C produced satisfactory yields of cyclohexanol/cycloalkanes.

Bionic-inspired La–Zn(4,4′-dipy)(OAc)2/bacterial cellulose composite membrane for efficient separation of nitrogen and phosphorus in water

Xudong Zheng,Wen Sun,Ning Wei,Tingting Bian,Yi Zhang,Lingli Li,Yuzhe Zhang,Zhongyu Li,Hongxiang Ou

Phosphorus and nitrogen flow to water leads to eutrophication and depletion of reserves. Bionic-inspired tannin modification is proposed for preparing a tannin-modified La–Zn(4,4′-dipy)(OAc) 2 /bacterial cellulose composite membrane for simultaneous adsorption of total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen in water. Its physical and chemical properties were characterized by XRD , SEM , FT-IR, TGA and other characterization methods. La–Zn(4,4′-dipy)(OAc) 2 nanomaterial achieved effective adhesion on the tannin-modified bacterial cellulose membrane. Adsorption experiments showed that the composite membrane could both adsorb total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen, and adsorption capacity of ammonia nitrogen was better than that of total phosphorus. The maximum adsorption capacities of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus were 482.35 mg/g and 374.71 mg/g. In the binary solution, the adsorption capacity of the composite membrane to ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus decreased, but the adsorption capacity to phosphorus decreased slightly. Results of adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process of nitrogen and phosphorus by the composite membrane belonged to single-layer adsorption, and the calculation results of the kinetic equation were in accordance with the quasi-second-order, and the adsorption equilibrium of the composite membrane was reached within 360 min. In short, the composite membrane had a better adsorption and separation effect both on ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus.

Phosphate removal by a La(OH)3 loaded magnetic MAPTAC-based cationic hydrogel: Enhanced surface charge density and Donnan membrane effect

Yanqing Zhou,Yili Wang,Shuoxun Dong,Haotian Hao,Junyi Li,Chenyang Liu,Xiaolin Li,Yao Tong

Cationic hydrogels have received great attention to control eutrophication and recycle phosphate. In this study, a type of La(OH) 3 loaded magnetic MAPTAC-based cationic hydrogel (La(OH) 3 @MMCH) was developed as a potential adsorbent for enhanced phosphate removal from aqueous environment. La(OH) 3 @MMCH exhibited high adsorption capacity of 105.72±5.99 mg P/g, and reached equilibrium within 2 hr. La(OH) 3 @MMCH could perform effectively in a wide pH range from 3.0 to 9.0 and in the presence of coexisting ions (including SO 4 2− , Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , SiO 4 4− and HA). The adsorption-desorption experiment indicated that La(OH) 3 @MMCH could be easily regenerated by using NaOH-NaCl as the desorption agent, and 73.3% adsorption capacity remained after five cycles. Moreover, La(OH) 3 @MMCH was employed to treat surface water with phosphate concentration of 1.90  mg/L and showed great removal efficiency of 95.21%. Actually, MMCH showed high surface charge density of 34.38-59.38 meq/kg in the pH range from 3.0 to 11.0 and great swelling ratio of 3014.57% within 24 h, indicating that MMCH could produce the enhanced Donnan membrane effect to pre-permeate phosphate. Furthermore, the bifunctional structure of La(OH) 3 @MMCH enabled it to capture phosphate through electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange . All the results prove that La(OH) 3 @MMCH is a promising adsorbent for eutrophication control and phosphate recovery.

Efficient sulfur resistance of Fe, La and Ce doped hierarchically structured catalysts for low-temperature methanation integrated with electric internal heating

Liguang Dou,Mingkai Fu,Yuan Gao,Lei Wang,Cunji Yan,Tianzeng Ma,Qiangqiang Zhang,Xin Li

Direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to synthetic natural gas at a lower temperature remains a big challenge especially in the presence of H 2 S impurity. This contribution describes the synthesis, structure, morphology and doping effect of a series of robust catalysts for CO 2 methanation under resistive heating, based on Ni-layered double hydroxides (LDH) grown on porous and electrically conductive nickel foam (NF) derived structured catalysts. As a result, LaNi/NF showed the highest CO 2 conversion (55%) and CH 4 formation rate (631.5 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) at lower temperature of 250 °C and FeNi/NF gave the optimal conversion at 350 °C (75%, 860.9 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), which was superior to the most of recently reported Ni-based supported catalysts. We found that the CH 4 selectivity of the H 2 S (50 ppm) poisoned catalysts was significantly decreased and CO was verified as the main by-product. In this case, LaNi/NF and FeNi/NF still retained much higher conversion rate at 300 °C, 29.8% for LaNi/NF and 27% for FeNi/NF, than the almost deactivated unmodified Ni/NF with maximum 5% CO 2 conversion. The extraordinary activities can be explained as that the dopants can greatly strengthen the metal-support interaction and further enhance the reducibility of active metallic Ni, as XRD, HRTEM, TPR and XPS indicated. Besides of this, DFT calculations demonstrated that the existence of La can greatly promote CO 2 adsorption by lowering the adsorption barrier from 0.55 eV of pure Ni to 0.12 eV, and further inhibit the gaseous H 2 S from chemisorbing on the catalyst surface owning to the relatively unstable Ni-S bond.

Improving catalytic performance of Cu-SSZ-13 for NOx abatement via in-situ introduction of La and Ce from spent catalyst

Xueqin Wang,Tiesen Li,Chan Wang,Qingyan Cui,Tinghai Wang,Xiaojun Bao,Yuanyuan Yue

Designing a cost-effective and fast fabrication Cu-SSZ-13 with improved selective catalytic reduction of NO by ammonia (NH 3 -SCR) performance remains an open question. Here we report that LaCe-SSZ-13 zeolites were synthesized from spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst within 12 h. After ion-exchanging with CuSO 4 solution, the obtained LaCeCu-SSZ-13 catalysts exhibit significantly higher catalytic activity and hydrothermal stability than conventional Cu-SSZ-13. Various characterizations reveal that La and Ce modification not only facilitates the disperse of isolated Cu 2+ species, but also effectively mitigates dealumination and inhibits copper species aggregation after hydrothermal aging. In-situ diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectrum analyses demonstrate that La and Ce modification can accelerate the adsorption capacity for NH 3 and NO x and promote the decomposition of NH 4 NO 3 intermediate species on the catalyst, benefiting the improvement of low-temperature activity. The combination of experiments and theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the most stable positions of La and Ce are on different eight-membered rings in SSZ-13, and then Cu 2+ ions tend to enter eight-membered rings to enhance the NH 3 adsorption capacity and decrease the H 2 O adsorption capacity, which results in higher low-temperature activity and hydrothermal stability than Cu-SSZ-13. Our work provides a feasible strategy for preparing the efficient rare-earth-modified Cu-zeolite based NH 3 -SCR catalyst for nitrogen oxide abatement.

High-performance photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 and CO by ABO3 (A = La, Ce; B = Ni, Co, Fe) perovskite nanomaterials

Shanhai Zhao,Yidan Luo,Chunhe Li,Kuankuan Ren,Yanyan Zhu,Weidong Dou

The synthesis of renewable fuel by CO 2 reduction is a promising research direction. The CO 2 reduction reaction may be promoted using photothermal catalysis to achieve efficient CO 2 conversion under mild conditions. In this context, designing efficient catalysts is urgent. In this work, ABO 3 (A = La, Ce; B = Ni, Co, Fe) perovskite catalysts were prepared by coprecipitation and calcination . Experimental results show that the A-site ions and B-site ions in ABO 3 perovskite nanomaterials have a great influence on their structure and photothermal catalytic performance. Among them, the LaNiO 3 catalyst shows excellent photothermal catalytic performance in the conversion of CO 2 to CO and CH 4 , which can generate 0.16 mmol g −1  h −1 CO and 1.38 mmol g −1  h −1 CH 4 at low CO 2 and H 2 concentrations. For the LaNiO 3 sample, its enhancement of catalytic performance mainly benefits from the largest number of active sites, the fastest carrier transport rate, and a relatively suitable band edge position compared with other catalysts. This study proposes a new method for improving the activity and selectivity of photothermal CO 2 reduction and offers a new direction for the recycling of waste gas.

Polymeric Microneedles Integrated with Metformin-Loaded and PDA/LA-Coated Hollow Mesoporous SiO2 for NIR-Triggered Transdermal Delivery on Diabetic Rats

Yang Zhang,Guohua Jiang,Wenjie Hong,Mengyue Gao,Bin Xu,Jiangying Zhu,Gao Song,Tianqi Liu

Herein, an NIR-responsive polymeric microneedle (MN) system incorporated with metformin-loaded and polydopamine/lauric-acid-coated (PDA/LA-coated) hollow mesoporous SiO2 has been developed for transdermal delivery of antidiabetic drug (metformin). First, an antidiabetic drug was loaded within hollow mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles (HMSNs) by a diffusion method. Then, PDA as photothermal conversion agent and lauric acid (LA) as phase change material (PCM) were coated onto the HMSN to form NIR-responsive drug nanocarriers. Finally, these metformin-loaded and PDA/LA-coated HMSNs were encapsulated into poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) MNs. After insertion into skin tissue, LA could melt with the photothermal conversion of PDA under NIR light, thus enabling release of encapsulated metformin from MNs. The in vivo release behavior of metformin from MNs into skin was further studied to investigate its hypoglycemic effect on diabetic rats. Compared with the subcutaneous injection of metformin, the bioavailability of MN–NIR groups was 95.8 ± 2.7%. The antidiabetic drug can be precisely released by adjustment of exposure time and power densities of NIR light.
