Highly accurate and sensitive detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus is crucial for ensuring seafood safety and preventing the transmission of foodborne diseases. Herein, a dual-recognition strategy-driven colorimetric biosensor for the detection of V. parahaemolyticus was developed. This biosensor was based on the use of PEG-mediated cefepime-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Cefe-PEG-MNPs) and aptamer-modified Fe-doped polydopamine (Fe@PDA) nanozymes. The magnetic platform Cefe-PEG-MNPs was introduced to enhance the enrichment efficiency of V. parahaemolyticus , achieving a capture efficiency exceeding 90%. The Fe@PDA nanozyme exhibited notable peroxidase mimetic enzyme activity. The colorimetric biosensor developed for V. parahaemolyticus detection demonstrated good sensitivity, with a detection range spanning from 2.1 × 10 1 to 2.1 × 10 6 CFU/mL, and a limit of detection of 21 CFU/mL. Moreover, the biosensor demonstrated remarkable specificity, achieving good recovery rates from 95.80% to 103.80% in Penaeus vannamei with a relative standard deviation of less than 1.38%. The newly developed colorimetric biosensor offers a remarkable opportunity for the accurate and sensitive detection of V . parahaemolyticus in seafood.

Solar energy, as a crucial green energy source, attracted significant attention. Phase change materials (PCMs) addressed the intermittency issue by storing and releasing latent heat. This study innovatively combined carbon fibers (CFs), phenolic resin, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to create high-loading (>86 %) and high-enthalpy composite CF-based phase change materials (CFPCMs), with melting and freezing enthalpies of 156.6 J/g and 148.6 J/g. CFPCMs demonstrated excellent photothermal and electrothermal properties. The lightweight, porous CFs structure stabilized the PCMs matrix, enhancing its performance while facilitating the reuse of waste CFs products, thus contributing to environmental protection.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic immune disease characterized by the infiltration of immune cells and the proliferation of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) at the joint site, leading to inflammation and joint destruction. However, the available treatment options targeting both inflammatory and proliferative FLS are limited. Herein, this work presents three covalent organic frameworks (COFs) photothermal composite systems modified with multi-armed polyethylene glycols (PEG) for the treatment of RA. These systems exhibit a dual response under low pH and high reactive oxygen species (ROS) conditions at the site of inflammation, with a specific focus on delivering the protein drug ribonuclease A (RNase A). Notably, molecular docking studies reveal the interaction between RNase A and NF-κB p65 protein, and Western blotting confirm its inhibitory effect on NF-κB activity. In vitro and in vivo experiments verify the significant reduction in joint swelling and deformities in adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rats after treatment with RNase A delivered by multi-armed PEG-modified COF ligands, restoring joint morphology to normal. These findings underscore the promising therapeutic potential of COFs for the treatment of RA, highlighting their unique capabilities in addressing both inflammatory and proliferative aspects of the disease and expanding the scope of biomedical applications for COFs.

This study investigated the tribological performance and lubrication mechanism of two distinct covalent organic frameworks (COFs), two-dimensional aromatic polyamides (2DAPA) with either a normal level of crystallinity (2DAPA-15 min) or a high level of crystallinity (2DAPA-240 min). Friction tests showed that 1.00 wt.-% 2DAPA-240 min enhanced PEG400’s anti-wear properties with a 29.10 wt.-% wear volume reduction and stable friction coefficient (∼0.05), outperforming 2DAPA-15 min. The wear surface exhibits minimal adhesive/abrasive damage, attributed to flake-like 2DAPA exfoliation under friction, forming a physical protective barrier via uniform deposition. The chemical adsorption of -NH 2 groups onto metal surfaces and Cl-driven FeCl 3 reaction films, alongside tribo-oxidation products (Fe 3 O 4 , Cr 2 O 3 ) and carbon-based (C-C/C-O/C-N) deposits that strengthen film stability. Notably, 2DAPA improves the tribological properties of PEG400 through the synergistic effect of physical deposition and chemical film formation. The findings of this study provide a solid theoretical basis for the development of high-performance lubricants based on 2D materials, paving the way for their practical application in various industries.

Molybdenum oxide (MoOx) nanosheets have drawn increasing attention for minimally invasive cancer treatments but still face great challenges, including complex modifications and the lack of efficient accumulation in tumor. In this work, a novel multifunctional degradable FA-BSA-PEG/MoOx nanosheet was fabricated (LA-PEG and FA-BSA dual modified MoOx): the synergistic effect of PEG and BSA endows the nanosheet with excellent stability and compatibility; the FA, a targeting ligand, facilitates the accumulation of nanosheets in the tumor. In addition, DTX, a model drug for breast cancer treatment, was loaded (76.49%, 1.5 times the carrier weight) in the nanosheets for in vitro and in vivo antitumor evaluation. The results revealed that the FA-BSA-PEG/MoOx@DTX nanosheets combined photothermal and chemotherapy could not only inhibit the primary tumor growth but also suppress the distant tumor growth (inhibition rate: 51.7%) and lung metastasis (inhibition rate: 93.6%), which is far more effective compared to the commercial Taxotere®. Exploration of the molecular mechanism showed that in vivo immune response induced an increase in positive immune responders, suppressed negative immune suppressors, and established an inflammatory tumor immune environment, which co-contributes towards effective suppression of tumor and lung metastasis. Our experiments demonstrated that this novel multifunctional nanosheet is a promising platform for combined chemo-photothermal therapy.Graphical Abstract

Traditional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology often struggles to achieve high-precision discrimination in the simultaneous detection of multiple exogenous hormones due to complex spectral overlap and matrix interference, limiting its application in trace analyte analysis within complex matrices (e.g., biological samples). This study developed a SERS substrate based on carboxyl-terminal polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @PEG), integrated with artificial intelligence (AI)-driven high-throughput spectral analysis algorithms. This approach successfully enabled ultrasensitive detection and precise discrimination of multiple typical exogenous hormonal drugs, including tamoxifen, drospirenone, cyproterone acetate, medroxyprogesterone acetate, estradiol ester derivatives, and dydrogesterone. By optimizing the surface enhancement effect of Fe 3 O 4 @PEG nanocomposites and employing machine learning models (e.g., convolutional neural networks, CNN) for collaborative analysis, the weak Raman fingerprint features of target hormones in complex mixtures were effectively extracted and classified, achieving a detection limit at the corresponding to 10 −7 –10 −8 mg/mL level. In matrix-spiked serum and urine samples, which mimic complex biological matrices validations, the AI-SERS platform demonstrated exceptional performance in the identification and quantitative analysis of target exogenous hormones. This research provides an intelligent analytical strategy for rapid and highly sensitive detection of multiple trace exogenous hormones in complex matrices.

Postoperative complications, such as air leakage, inflammation, and pleural adhesion, present considerable clinical challenges following lung resection procedures. These complications critically affect pulmonary recovery. In this study, we report a novel multifunctional self-adhesive bio-patch SIS-PEG-AC, which synergistically combines the biological activity of small intestinal submucosa (SIS), the effective sealing air leaks provided by polyethylene glycol (PEG) coating, and the anti-inflammatory effects of asiaticoside (AC). Compared to SIS, which exhibited limited tissue adhesion (0.73 kPa), the SIS-PEG-AC patch demonstrated a 30-fold increase in adhesiveness, achieving robust tissue adhesion (23.31 kPa) and significantly enhanced reparative capacity. AC delivered from the PEG hydrogel coating in a sustained manner, promoting the polarization of macrophages to M2 phenotype, to suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, thereby establishing a pro-regenerative ecological environment. The results of 28-day implantation on rat lung injury and 70-day implantation on pig lung wedge resection showed, the SIS-PEG-AC achieved excellent wound sealing, minimized postoperative pleural adhesions and significantly accelerated lung tissue regeneration. Compared with traditional synthetic polymers, the SIS-PEG-AC patch exhibited reduced adverse reactions, superior host tissue integration, and heightened control of the regenerative microenvironment, providing a promising approach to mitigate postoperative complications. Overall, this multifunctional patch demonstrates considerable clinical potential in lung repair, offering an effective strategy for thoracic surgical interventions.

In this work, an original amphiphilic copolymer P(PEG-PDMS-KH570) combined with SiO 2 nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) was utilized to prepare polyether sulfone (PES) nanocomposite ultrafiltration (UF) membrane with enhanced antifouling performance. The enrichment of the organic-inorganic modifier P(PEG-PDMS-KH570)@SiO 2 were realized at the same time as the formation of PES UF membrane via sol-gel non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The interaction between the copolymer P(PEG-PDMS-KH570) and SiO 2 NPs furnished a stable and effective antifouling PES UF membrane. Surface morphology, chemical composition characterization and wetting property measurements confirmed the segregation and distribution of the nanocomposite modifier. The multi-defense mechanism from fouling resistance to fouling release of the nanocomposite membranes was investigated by setting bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution as a model foulant. The antifouling properties of the modified membranes, especially for the PES/T@SiO 2 ∼4% membrane, were effectively improved. The flux decline rate of PES/T@SiO 2 ∼4% membrane was as low as 15.6%, and the flux recover ratio was up to 99.0%. Moreover, the modified membranes also possessed remarkable antifouling stability. Results of this work provide a facile method to construct a hierarchical and heterogeneous membrane surface that could achieve the multi-defense mechanism in efficient water treatment.

Titanium-based materials hold great biomedical potential owing to excellent biocompatibility. But titanium diboride (TiB 2 ), an emerging metal boride, is rarely explored for antitumor use, and developing multifunctional TiB 2 -based nanoplatforms with enhanced catalytic activity is urgently needed. Herein, we constructed a nanoplatform (TiB 2 -PEG-DOX) by modifying TiB 2 nanosheets (TiB 2 NSs) with amino polyethylene glycol (NH 2 -PEG-NH 2 ) and loading doxorubicin (DOX) via electrostatic interaction. We first clarified the boron (B)-mediated Ti valence cycle: B regulates Ti electron transfer, promotes Ti 4+ reduction to Ti 2+ , enhancing H 2 O 2 -rich tumor microenvironment Fenton-like reaction to generate cytotoxic •OH for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meanwhile, TiB 2 -PEG-DOX shows 53.53% photothermal conversion efficiency under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation for efficient photothermal therapy (PTT), and NIR further triggers on-demand DOX release. DOX accumulates at tumor sites via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect to exert chemotherapy (CT). In vitro, it eliminates 86.32% of HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells via CDT/PTT/CT synergy; in vivo, it achieves nearly complete tumor ablation in mice with excellent biocompatibility. This work provides a high-performance synergistic antitumor platform and establishes a B-modulated metal valence cycling paradigm, paving the way for titanium-based nanomedicines.

To understand the microstructure evolution of hydrogels swollen in seawater, freeze-drying technology was used to fix and preserve the swollen three-dimensional microstructure. By this method, we revealed the swelling behavior of hydrogels in seawater, and elucidated the mechanism of the swelling process. Meanwhile, we also used Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy; laser confocal microscopy; field emission scanning electron microscopy, and swelling performance tests to research the structure and properties of PS-PEG hydrogels, before and after seawater swelling, and analyzed the structure and properties of PEG-based hydrogels with different contents of polystyrene microspheres. Results showed that PS-PEG hydrogels went through three stages during the swelling process, namely ‘wetting-rapid swelling-swelling equilibrium’. Due to the capillary effect and hydration effect, the surface area would initially grow tiny pores, and enter the interior in a free penetration manner. Finally, it formed a stable structure, and this process varied with different content of polystyrene microspheres. In addition, with the increase of polystyrene microsphere content, the roughness of the hydrogel before swelling would increase, but decrease after swelling. Appropriate acquisition of polystyrene microspheres could enhance the three-dimensional network structure of PEG-based hydrogels, with a lower swelling degree than hydrogels without polystyrene microspheres.

Phase change materials (PCMs) offer significant advantages in energy conversion and storage by facilitating the storage and release of thermal energy during phase transition processes. However, challenges such as leakage during PCM phase transitions and poor light absorption properties have constrained their application in the field of photothermal energy storage. In this study, Montmorillonite (Mt) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has been used to design and synthesize hybrid aerogels (MoS 2 /Mt) boasting high mechanical strength and excellent photothermal conversion performance. These aerogels are then used to encapsulate polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prepare composite PCMs with outstanding solar-thermal conversion and storage performances. The results show that the synthesized MoS 2 /Mt-PEG composite PCMs exhibit high enthalpies of melting and solidification of 169.16 J/g and 170.78 J/g, respectively, while the aerogel supporting material has a high compressive modulus of 1.96 MPa. Moreover, the composite material displayed excellent thermal stability and leakage resistance after undergoing 30 melting-cooling cycles. Furthermore, the incorporation of MoS 2 imparted outstanding light absorption properties to the MoS 2 /Mt-PEG composite, resulting in a high light absorption and photothermal conversion-storage efficiency of 93.4 % and 96.47 %, respectively. Synthesized composite PCMs also demonstrate outstanding performance in solar-thermal-electricity conversion, achieving a voltage output of 458 mV under illumination conditions and maintaining a sustainable voltage output even after removing the light source. Thus, the composite PCMs prepared in this work can meet the requirements of high enthalpy, effective leakage prevention, efficient solar-thermal conversion and solar-thermal-electricity conversion performance, thereby presenting potential applications in practical solar energy collection, conversion, and storage.

APTES modification promotes uniform PCNC loading on PU/PEG fibers. • The composite membrane shows enhanced thermal conductivity of 0.129 W · m⁻ 1 ·K⁻1. • The membrane maintains good stability after thermal cycling and water treatment. • High solar reflectance (∼95%) enables effective temperature regulation under simulated solar irradiation. Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based phase change fibrous membranes are promising flexible thermal management materials, but their performance is often limited by melting-induced deformation, low heat-transfer efficiency, and insufficient cycling stability. In this study, an APTES-regulated interfacial loading strategy was developed by loading amino-functionalized n-octadecane/SiO 2 phase change nanocapsules (N x -PCNCs) onto electrospun PU/PEG fibrous membranes. The effect of APTES concentration on the capsule loading state and thermal management performance was systematically investigated. Moderate APTES modification improved the loading and dispersion of PCNCs on the fiber. Among the samples, PU/PEG/N 20 -PCNCs showed a relatively uniform particle distribution and a thermal conductivity of 0.129 ± 0.015 W · m⁻ 1 · K⁻ 1 . The composite fibrous membrane maintained stable phase-change behavior after 200 melting–crystallization cycles and 20 water-treatment cycles, demonstrating good cycling stability under the tested conditions. Moreover, PU/PEG/N 20 -PCNCs exhibited an average solar reflectance of approximately 95 ± 0.8% and reduced the surface temperature by 9.2 and 2.3 °C compared with PU and PU/PEG fibrous membranes under simulated solar irradiation. These results demonstrate that APTES-regulated interfacial loading of PCNCs is an effective strategy for improving the thermal storage, stability, and temperature-buffering performance of PU/PEG phase change fibrous membranes.
