Preparation of a symmetrical spongy CA-CNS/β-PVDF photocatalytic membrane for antibiotic removal

Mingliang Zhang,Qian Ye,Qianqian Yi,Hanbin Wu,Chao Liu,Bingjie Zhang,Xinyi Li,Bin Yan

Extensive studies have been conducted on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of antibiotics in water environments. However, the separation and recovery of powdered catalysts from water at the end of the reaction remains a great challenge, which hinders the large-scale application of powder photocatalysts. Inspired by the high sustainability, energy efficiency, and cleanliness of photocatalytic technique in antibiotic degradation, we have developed a stable and efficient ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 /β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (CA-CNS/β-PVDF) membrane for antibiotics removal. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the tetracycline (TC) removal rate of the membrane reached 93.12 % within 2 h due to the synergistic effect of the embedded ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 and β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane still maintained excellent photocatalytic performance after five cycles, showing good stability and reusability. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching analyses suggest that the TC degradation efficiency is enhanced by the synergistic effect of free radical-non-free radical mixed pathways (•O 2 , •OH, h + , 1 O 2 ) and 1 O 2 plays an important role in the degradation process. The excellent photocatalytic antibiotics degradation performances of CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane were still obtained in actual water samples under natural sunlight, suggesting its great application potentials. The photocatalytic mechanism, possible degradation intermediates, and degradation pathways are elucidated based on the theoretical calculations and experiments. The toxicity analysis by QSAR shows that the CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane successfully reduces the biological toxicity of three antibiotics (TC, OTC, CIP) during the photocatalysis. In all, our work provides a universal immobilization technique of powdered photocatalysts to improve their wastewater purification efficiencies.

PVDF-Based Nanocomposites with Increased Crystallinity and Polar Phases toward High Energy Storage Performance

Dajun Hou,Jie Shen,Jingjing Zhou,Yuanying Yu,Wen Chen,Pengchao Zhang,Jing Zhou

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites, despite their extensive exploration for dielectric energy storage applications, are constrained by a low intrinsic dielectric constant (εr). Traditional approaches to enhance εr by incorporating high εr ceramic fillers often compromise the electric breakdown strength (Eb), thereby limiting the overall energy storage performance. This study aims to address this dilemma by introducing a novel approach using highly dispersed modified-BaTiO3 (BTPM) nanofillers at low loadings. We elucidate the impact of these nanofillers on the crystallization behavior of PVDF-based nanocomposites and their subsequent influence on the dielectric energy storage performance. The findings reveal a remarkable enhancement in dielectric properties with only 1.72 vol % BTPM filler loading, simultaneously achieving a 1.48-fold increase in εr and a 1.23-fold improvement in Eb. This innovation overcomes the limitation of the dilemma and significantly improves the discharge energy density (Ue) to 16.27 J/cm3 and the charge–discharge efficiency (η) to 78%. These advancements are primarily attributed to the increased crystallinity and optimized ratio of polar to nonpolar phases (Fpolar/Fnon), induced by the highly dispersed BTPM nanofillers. This study not only advances the development in high-performance dielectric energy storage PVDF-based nanocomposites but also opens new avenues for future research, focusing on the synergistic enhancement of dielectric properties with minimal filler loading.

PVDF-based energetic films with high output performance: Synergistic effect based on Al/Ti

Lejian Chen,Xianghong Xiao,Haofang Yuan,Hongyu Chen,Yuxuan Zhou,Yinghua Ye,RuiQi Shen,Lizhi Wu

With the ongoing advancement of miniaturization and microfabrication, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) energetic devices are increasingly demanding higher output capabilities from energetic materials. This study investigates the incorporation of Titanium (Ti) into PVDF-based energetic films to improve their performance. We fabricated five Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF energetic composite films with varying Ti contents by direct ink writing (DIW). The results indicate that the Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF films demonstrate superior performance compared to Al/CuO/PVDF(AT-0). Notably, the 50 wt% Al/50 wt% Ti/CuO/PVDF (AT-50) film achieved optimal performance, exhibiting a 68% increase in combustion rate compared to the AT-0 film. Additionally, it showed a reduction in ignition delay time by 6 ms, an increase in flame temperature of 160.9 K, a 24% rise in maximum pressure, a pressurization rate enhancement of 117%, and an overall increase in heat release of 26.8%. This is attributed to the synergistic effect of the Al/Ti bimetallic fuels, where their close contact creates an alloying reaction that releases a large amount of heat and avoids the detrimental effects of Al sintering. This Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF energetic composite film, characterized by its exceptional synergistic mechanism and high energy output, holds significant promise for integration with MEMS devices, paving the way for innovative applications in micro-ignition, micro-propulsion, and micro-startup technologies. Highlights Ti was added to the PVDF-based energetic films to form the dual-fuel system. The Al/Ti dual-fuel has a synergistic effect to improve output performance. The 50wt%Al/50wt%Ti/CuO/PVDF film can achieve optimal output performance.

Synergistic Construction of Superhydrophilic PVDF Membranes by Dual Modification Strategies for Efficient Emulsion Separation

Xin Zhong,Qinhan Shi,Zhiguang Guo

Solving the problem of oil and water pollution is an important topic in environmental protection. The separation of oil-water emulsion with high efficiency and low consumption has been the direction of social efforts. Membrane separation technology combined with surface wettability and pore size screening is considered to be one of the most promising ways to separate oil-water emulsions. In this paper, the polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane is prepared by combining the two methods of blending and coating modification as a double barrier. The prepared PVDF membrane can completely wet water, achieve superhydrophilic in air, and superoleophobic underwater. The separation efficiency and flux are 99.57% and 678 L h −1 m −2 bar −1 , respectively, for toluene emulsions containing surfactants with an average particle size of 1.7 µm. At the same time, it can also effectively separate different kinds of light/heavy oils. After three cycles of testing still maintain high efficiency of separation. The results show that the prepared PVDF membrane can effectively separate the emulsion containing surfactant with smaller particle size distribution of oil droplets. This method provides a new strategy for the separation of oil-water emulsions and has broad application prospects.

Superhydrophilic PANI/Ag/TA@PVDF Composite Membrane with Antifouling Property for Oil–Water Separation

Zhenmin Wu,Jie He,Guoyu Zhao,Xiaoyan Tang,Junqing Li,Wenhang Chen,Ruiqi Li

The current membrane materials used for oil–water separation suffer from low separation efficiency and poor durability, and membrane contamination is also a key issue that must be addressed urgently. In this paper, a superhydrophilic PANI/Ag/TA@PVDF composite membrane with PANI-Ag NPs heterojunction structure was prepared via chelation and reduction of Ag+ by tannic acid (TA) and in situ growth of hydrochloric acid-doped polyaniline (PANI). TA endows the prepared composite membrane with excellent superhydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity, remarkable oil–water separation capacity (the separation efficiency of more than 97% for soybean oil), and extraordinary antifouling properties. Notably, the range of photodegradation is expanded from UV to visible light by the construction of a Schottky heterostructure between PANI and Ag NPs, the photocatalytic degradation ability of composite membrane for organic pollutants has been improved obviously, and the degradation efficiency for crystal violet (CV) is 97.9%. Considering these merits, the PANI/Ag/TA@PVDF composite membrane provides an effective strategy to overcome the shortcomings of existing membrane materials, presenting enormous potential in the treatment and purification of oily wastewater.

Tailoring of PVDF for retrieval of piezoelectric powders to optimize piezo-catalytic water treatment

Kaiyu Feng,Yan Zhang,Xuefan Zhou,Yan Zhao,Hanyu Gong,Xiang Zhou,Hang Luo,Dou Zhang,Chris Bowen

Powder-based piezoelectric catalysts have been widely examined due to their high catalytic activity for applications such as water treatment and dye degradation. However, challenges remain which are associated with secondary pollution as a result of employing a powder-based catalyst. While the use of bulk catalysts can overcome this challenge, their catalytic activity has been shown to decrease significantly compared to fine-scale catalytic powders. In this study, a simple, efficient, cost-effective and in situ approach is developed that is able to successfully retrieve a powder-based catalyst by coating catalytic particles with dopamine and exploiting the interaction between dopamine and a porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate to collect the catalytic particles. Detailed characterisation and molecular dynamics modeling are used to determine the mechanisms of the chemical interactions and piezocatalysis. The universality of this new approach is demonstrated by conducting a range of experiments with a range of ceramic particulates, catalyst morphologies and potential dyes. Using this new strategy, we demonstrate the ability of ferroelectric particles to achieve a high piezocatalytic activity while being anchored onto a porous PVDF layer, thereby limiting secondary pollution. This work therefore provides a novel approach for the retrieval of powder-based catalysts, with potential to expand their application potential to other forms of powder-based catalysts.

Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 ferroelectric filler-reinforced poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymer electrolytes for dendrite-free solid-state Li metal batteries

Chen Yang,Hongjian Zhang,Mingtao Zhu,Ping Li,Hao Wu,Qiushi Wang,Yong Zhang

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based electrolytes have attracted significant attention for their potential use in solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) due to their superior electrochemical performance and safety. However, their low ionic conductivity and uneven lithium deposition hinder the further application of PVDF-based electrolytes. Herein, this work focuses on incorporating Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) ferroelectric ceramics into PVDF to form composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs). The BST ferroelectric ceramics can create an intrinsic electric field that facilitates lithium-ion transport and enables uniform Li deposition. In addition, benefiting from the high dielectric constant of BST and dipoles generated from the asymmetric structure, PVDF–BST CSEs achieve a high ionic conductivity (1.79 × 10−4 S cm−1) due to more free lithium ions, a wide electrochemical window of 4.8 V (vs. Li/Li+) and a high Li+ transference number (0.37). The assembled Li|PVDF–BST|Li symmetrical cells can steadily cycle for 1100 h at 0.1 mA cm−2 at 25 °C. The assembled Li|PVDF–BST|LiFePO4 cells show long-term cycling stability with a capacity retention of 85.6% after 100 cycles at 0.5C and a capacity retention of 81.4% after 200 cycles at 1C. This work provides a new strategy for improving the performance of the PVDF-based electrolytes by incorporating ferroelectric ceramics.

Acoustic Core–Shell Resonance Harvester for Application of Artificial Cochlea Based on the Piezo-Triboelectric Effect

Jiaqi Zheng,Zhaohan Yu,Yunming Wang,Yue Fu,Dan Chen,Huamin Zhou

The demand for flexible, efficient, and self-powered cochlear implants applied to remedy sensorineural hearing loss caused by dysfunctional hair cells remains urgent. Herein, we report an acoustic core–shell resonance harvester for the application of artificial cochleae based on the piezo-triboelectric effect. Integrating dispersed BaTiO3 particles as cores and porous PVDF-TrFE as shells, the acoustic harvest devices with ingenious core–shell structures exhibit outstanding piezo-triboelectric properties (Voc = 15.24 V, DAsc = 9.22 mA/m2). The acoustic harvest principle reveals that BaTiO3 nanocores resonate with sound waves and bounce against porous PVDF-TrFE microshells, thereby generating piezo-triboelectric signals. By experimental measurement and numerical modeling, the vibration process and resonance regulation of acoustic harvest devices were intensively investigated to regulate the influential parameters. Furthermore, the acoustic harvesters exhibit admirable feasibility and sensitivity for sound recording and show potential application for artificial cochlea.

An integrated strategy for achieving oil-in-water separation, removal, and anti-oil/dye/bacteria-fouling

Yufei Wang,Zili Liu,Xingchuan Wei,Kuiliang Liu,Jiahai Wang,Jietao Hu,Jing Lin

Numerous strategies on the application of superwettable membranes for oil/water (O/W) separation have been proposed; however, few works on one-step separation strategies and the separation mechanism of complex O/W effluents containing organic dye and bacteria have been reported. Here, an integrated strategy for O/W separation, removal, and anti-oil/bacteria/dye-fouling is firstly proposed. A hydrogel fabricated PVDF@ZnO/Ag (H-PVDF@ZnO/Ag) membrane is designed with a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface and hierarchical membrane channels, which exhibits superior separation efficiency (99.4%) and flux (1700 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ). Considering the wettability, the interface intrusion pressure influences the O/W separation. Also considering the energy and molecular kinetics, the differences in the interaction energy and mean square displacement (MSD) of the water and oil molecules with the membrane obtained by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are the internal factors influencing the O/W separation. The experimental and MD simulation results demonstrate that the high organic dye removal efficiency (>99%) is attributed to the synergistic effect between the hydrogel electrostatic adsorption and the ZnO/Ag photodegradation. The excellent anti-oil/dye/bacteria-fouling is due to the low oil adhesion, hydration layer, photodegradation, and antibacterial activity. Introducing an amino resin to the membrane increases the membrane’s tolerance and resistance to mechanical damage and chemical attack due to the intertwined cross-linking network and hydrogen bonds. The membrane also exhibits effective separation of real wastewater from jeans factory. This strategy may inspire further research on the treatment of complex O/W effluents.

High-Stability Printable Perovskite SERS Substrates in an Aqueous Environment via Plasmon-Induced Resonance Energy Transfer

Minghui Niu,Chengwei Shan,Chenlong Xue,Xiaowei Xu,Aoyan Zhang,Yihong Xiao,Junyu Wei,Defeng Zou,Gina Jinna Chen,Aung Ko Ko Kyaw,Perry Ping Shum

The excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency and tunable bandgap of metal halide perovskites make them highly suitable for SERS applications. However, the low stability of perovskites in water and oxygen greatly hinders their use in SERS detection, particularly in biomolecule detection applications, which often require water-based test solutions. Herein, we report a gold (Au)/perovskite-polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) nanocomposite/ZnO nanoflower (GPPZ) SERS substrate capable of functioning in aqueous solutions. Its enhancement ability is attributed to plasmon-induced resonance energy transfer (PIRET) and an electromagnetic mechanism. The surface plasmon resonance created by ultrathin Au and ZnO nanoflowers induces resonance energy transfers to the perovskite via PIRET, facilitating a quasi-matched charge transfer between the perovskite and the probe molecule. The PVDF coating protects the perovskite from water and oxygen without affecting the resonance energy-transfer process. As a result, an enhancement factor (EF) approaching 1 × 106 was achieved for the crystal violet molecule. Additionally, we fabricated a flexible GPPZ substrate using silk screen printing, enabling mass production of an SERS array substrate. The printed flexible GPPZ substrates demonstrated micromole-level cysteine detection with an EF of 6.8 × 105, showing potential for application in hyperhomocysteinemia diagnosis.

Preparation and characterization of superior antifouling PVDF membrane with extremely ordered and hydrophilic surface layer

Xinzhen Zhao,Huixia Xuan,Yongliang Chen,Chunju He

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with ordered and super hydrophilic surface were prepared though the self-assembly of anionic polyelectrolyte sodium alginate and amino functionalized SiO 2 nanoparticles , which were employed to tune the antifouling property of PVDF membrane though ordered and hydrophilic nanoscale surface. The assembly sites were introduced though the reaction between trimesoyl chloride and the reactive groups on plasma treated membrane surface. The physical and chemical properties of the membrane surface were closely related to the assembly number, since the assembled layer could effectively reduce the probability of absorption on membrane surface and entering membrane pores of pollutants to minimize the irreversible fouling at the maximum level. The modified PVDF membranes exhibited excellent hydrophilicity with obviously decreased surface contact angle, which distinctly enhanced the antifouling properties for humic acids and bovine serum albumin with secondary water flux recovery ratio (FRR) of nearly 100%. This paper aimed to provide an effective method to take the advantage of hydrophilic and ordered nanoscale surface to optimize the separation efficiency and antifouling performance of hydrophobic separation membrane .

Tributyl Citrate as Diluent for Preparation of Pvdf Porous Membrane via Thermally Induced Phase Separation

Zhao-Cai Zhang,Chun-Gang Guo,Jing-Lie Lv

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was successfully prepared by PVDF/tributyl citrate (TBC) via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). TBC was used as diluent for membrane preparation, which is citric acid esters non-toxic, non-odorous, easy to prepare and comparatively cheap. The effects of PVDF content on crystallinity of PVDF and porous structure were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry and pore size analyzer instrument. The results showed that PVDF was most able to crystallize and the membrane pore size became more uniform and smaller at higher polymer content.
