Spoilage results in food waste and endangers consumer health, and the smart antibacterial packaging can effectively inhibit bacterial growth and reduce food spoilage . In this study, the smart antibacterial nanocellulose packaging films were developed by adding the pH-stimulated responsive microcapsules into cellulose nanofibril (CNF) film-forming. The microcapsules were synthesized by interfacial polymerization of Pickering emulsion . Carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals as solid particles stabilized the composited oil phase to prepare the oil-in-water Pickering emulsion. The emulsion with the particle concentration of 1.25 wt% and the oil phase mass fraction of 7.5 % processes excellent stability and uniform particle size, was chosen to synthesize microcapsules. The cinnamaldehyde in the film with the addition amount of microcapsules 0.6 g burst released in the first 1 h and then slowly, and the cumulative release at pH 2.0, 4.0, 5.5 and 7.2 was 28.43 μg/cm 2 , 18.84 μg/cm 2 , 16.52 μg/cm 2 and 12.89 μg/cm 2 , respectively. The inhibitory rate of film against both E. coli and L. monocytogenes reached 99 % at pH 4.0. The shelf life of pork packed by the film prolonged to nearly 9 d at room temperature . The developed films have the potential to be used in food packaging.

The development of environmentally friendly and low-cost adsorbents with high adsorption capacity remains a challenge. Herein, chitin nanofiber-polydopamine composite materials (CNDA) have been obtained by surface modification of chitin nanofiber using dopamine. According to the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), polydopamine have been successfully coated on the surface of chitin nanofiber (ChNF). The ability to remove methylene blue (MB) has been analyzed via standard adsorption experiments, indicating that the maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) can reach 196.6 mg/g at MB initial concentration of 50 mg/L. Most importantly, the adsorption kinetics , isotherm, and thermodynamics were used to investigate the MB adsorption mechanism on composites. This indicated that the polydopamine on the surface of chitin nanofiber (ChNF) plays an important role in the MB dye adsorption. Moreover, the removal ability of CNDA to metal ions has also been investigated, indicating high capacities for Fe 3+ , Mn 2+ , Cu 2+, and Ni 2+ . Based on their biodegradability and good adsorption capacity, the CNDA composite material can be considered a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

The easily synthesized, cost-effective, and stable photocatalysts for sulfite activation are always required for the enhancement of organic contaminants degradation. Herein, the facile coprecipitation synthesis of Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr)/Montmorillonite (MMT) was reported, which could activate sulfite (SO 3 2− /HSO 3 − ) under sunlight and accelerate the catalytic performance more effectively than pristine BiOBr. After adding sulfite to the photocatalysis system, the photodegradation efficiency of atrazine (ATZ) achieved 73.7% ± 1.5% after 5 min and 94.4% ± 1.6% after 30 min of sunlight irradiation with BiOBr/MMT. The BiOBr/MMT-sulfite system also presented remarkable photocatalytic performance to eliminate various contaminants, including ciprofloxacin, sulfadiazine, tetracycline , and carbamazepine. The various features of the photocatalyst materials were studied, including their surface morphology, structure, optical properties , and composition. The results illustrated that by adding MMT, the bandgap of the pristine BiOBr was reduced and the surface area was increased, which led to an increased ability to adsorb materials. Results of various influence factors showed this enhanced system had satisfactory and stable removal performance of ATZ in the pH range of 3.0–6.5, but HPO 4 2− had a strong negative effect on the system performance. Oxysulfur radicals (SO 5 ·- and SO 4 ·- ), h + , and 1 O 2 were discovered as the prevailing active species in the BiOBr/MMT-sulfite system. The proposed degradation mechanism of this photocatalyst-enhanced system revealed that sulfite adsorption on the surface of the photocatalyst played a vital role during the initial phase, and the degradation pathway of ATZ was discussed. This study provides a new synthesis strategy of a photocatalyst for sulfite activation and expands the potential uses of Bi-based photocatalysts in degrading difficult-to-remove organic pollutants.

Herein, we demonstrated the preparation of novel three-dimensional (3D) superamphiphilic g-C3N4@carbon nanofibers foam (g-C3N4@CNFs) via a two-step approach: liquid nitrogen treatment-freeze-drying; the foams possessed good thermal stability. In this approach, melamine acted as a nitrogen source, and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFCs) functioned as a 3D skeleton. The thermal stability of the as-prepared g-C3N4@CNFs-3 foam was much higher than that of g-C3N4@CNFs-1, as indicated by thermogravimetric data, including an increase of the onset weight loss point (Tonset) by 238.6 °C and an improvement of the maximal weight loss rate (Tmax) by 258.8 °C. The combination of g-C3N4 with CNFs conferred a reduction in the heat release rate (ca. −86%) and the total heat release (ca. −75%). Furthermore, the composition of the hydrophilically oxygenated functional groups and hydrophobic triazine domains in g-C3N4@CNFs rendered it a unique amphiphilic property (contact angle close to 0° within 1.0 s for water and 0° within 12 ms for hexane). A high storage capacity for water and various organic solvents of the superamphiphilic g-C3N4@CNFs foam was found, up to 40–50 times its original weight. The discovery of these superamphiphilic foams is of great significance for the development of superwetting materials and may find their applications in oil emulsion purification and catalyst support fields.

Constructing heterojunction of supramolecular arrays self-assembled on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with elaborate charge transfer mechanisms is a promising strategy for the photocatalytic oxidation of organic pollutants. Herein, H 12 SubPcB–Br (SubPc–Br) and UiO-66 are used to obtain the step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction SubPc–Br/UiO-66 for the first time, which is then applied in the photocatalytic oxidation of minocycline. Atomic-level B–O–Zr charge-transfer channels and van der Waals force connections synergistically accelerated the charge transfer at the interface of the SubPc–Br/UiO-66 heterojunction, while the establishment of the B–O–Zr bonds also led to the directional transfer of charge from SubPc–Br to UiO-66. The synergy is the key to improving the photocatalytic activity and stability of SubPc–Br/UiO-66, which is also verified by various characterization methods and theoretical calculations. The minocycline degradation efficiency of supramolecular SubPc–Br/UiO-66 arrays reach 90.9% within 30 min under visible light irradiation. The molecular dynamics simulations indicate that B–O–Zr bonds and van der Waals force contribute significantly to the stability of the SubPc–Br/UiO-66 heterojunction. This work reveals an approach for the rational design of semiconducting MOF-based heterojunctions with improved properties.

Nanocellulose finds various applications in advanced electrical devices due to its impressive mechanical properties, thermal stability , and degradability. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with excellent dielectric properties may act as a fresh dielectric plastic. In this study, a new strategy of small molecule modification was used to improve the dielectric constant , breakdown strength, and band gap of the CNCs. The dipole moments , dipole density, and the anisotropic impact of surface groups on the dielectric constant were studied. The number of sulfates in the CNCs showed a gradient due to alkali treatment and sulfonation , which allowed for a controlled range of the dielectric constant of nanocellulose between 4.9 and 11.9. TEMPO oxidation (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) and cyanoethylation of the CNCs further increased the dielectric constant to 11.1 and 13.2, respectively, and the dielectric loss 10 −1 . By understanding and innovating organic polymer dielectrics, we can provide significant benefits to the electronics and device industries.

In the realm of sensing, carbon dots (CDs) have exhibited remarkable fluorescence characteristics. In the field of catalysis, CDs can function concurrently as electron donors and acceptors and have substantial electron or hole transport capacities. In this study, both merits were integrated into one, and a one-step hydrothermal approach was used to create multifunctional CDs. On the one hand, CDs are employed as a fluorescence probe with good sensitivity and selectivity to detect Cr(VI). On the other hand, CDs exhibit strong photoreduction capabilities for Cr(VI) in the absence of any external cocatalysts or photosensitizers when acting as photoinitiators. The results show that Cr(VI) quenches the CDs fluorescence as a result of the combined effects of static quenching and the inner filter effect. At the same time, under the condition of illumination, the inner filter effect encourages the CDs electrons to move from the valence band to the conduction band, resulting in electron hole pairs. With the help of electrons' reducing power, Cr(VI) can be rapidly and effectively converted to Cr(III). The findings of this study suggest that CDs are a satisfying bi-functional carbon-based material with significant potential for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

The adsorption removal of lead (Pb) ions has become a crucial area of research due to the potential health hazards associated with Pb contamination. Developing cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of Pb(II) ions is significantly important. Hence, a novel fluorescent starch-based hydrogel (FSH) using starch (ST), cellulose nanofibrils (CN), and carbon dots (CD) was fabricated for simultaneous adsorption and detection of Pb(II). A comprehensive characterization of FSH, including its morphological features, chemical composition , and fluorescence characteristics, was conducted. Notably, FSH exhibited a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 265.9 mg/g, which was 13.0 times higher than that of pure ST. Moreover, FSH was employed as a fluorescent sensor for Pb(II) determination, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.06 μg/L. An analysis was further performed to investigate the adsorption and detection mechanisms of Pb(II) utilizing FSH. This study provides valuable insights into the production of a novel cost-effective ST-based adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions.

Currently, there is great interest in converting edible agro-waste, such as okara from soybean production, into value-added products. For this study, we focus on fabricating composite hydrogels from okara cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and carrageenan (CA). We also examined the effects of TEMPO oxidation of the okara CNFs, as well as CA concentration, on the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the composite hydrogels. The water holding capacity, oil holding capacity, surface tension, gel strength , and viscoelasticity of the composite microgels increased with increasing CA concentration, and it was found that the highest values were obtained for TC-CA2 hydrogel: contact angle = 43.6° and surface tension = 45.12 mN/m, which was attributed to the formation of a more regular and dense three-dimensional gel network. All the CNF-CA microgels had highly anionic ζ-potential values (−38.8 to −50.1 mV), with the magnitude of the negative charge increasing with TEMPO oxidation and carrageenan concentration. These results suggest there would be strong electrostatic repulsion between the composite hydrogels. The composite microgels produced in our work may be useful functional materials for utilization within the food industry, thereby converting a waste product into a valuable commodity.

Transparent aerogels are ideal candidates for thermally insulating windows, solar thermal receivers, electronics, etc. However, they are usually prepared via energy-consuming supercritical drying and show brittleness and low tensile strength, significantly restricting their practical applications. It remains a great challenge to prepare transparent aerogels with high tensile strength and toughness. Herein, biomimetic transparent tough cellulose nanofiber-based nanocomposite aerogels with a layered nanofibrous structure are achieved by vacuum-assisted self-assembly combined with ambient pressure drying. The nacre-like layered homogeneous nanoporous structures can reduce light scattering and effectively transfer stress and prevent stress concentration under external forces. The aerogels exhibit an attractive combination of excellent transparency and hydrophobicity, high compressive and tensile strengths, high toughness, excellent machinability, thermal superinsulation, and wide working temperature range (−196 to 230 °C). It is demonstrated that they can be used for superinsulating windows of buildings and high-efficient thermal management for electronics and human bodies. In addition, a prototype of transparent flexible aerogel-based triboelectric nanogenerator is developed. This work provides a promising pathway toward transparent tough porous materials for energy saving/harvesting, thermal management, electronics, sensors, etc.

Because of the explosive generation of drug-fast bacteria, antibiotics-free strategy is much-needed for elimination of bacterial-associated contagion. Herein, we develop a near-infrared (NIR) activated heterostructure catalyst (MXene/CoNWs) consisted of two-dimensional (2D) MXene and one-dimensional (1D) cobalt nanowires (CoNWs) in acting against bacteria for drug-free therapy. The intercalated CoNWs can rapidly trap the photogenerated electrons from Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets, thus restrains the recombination of hot electron-hole and facilitates transfer of carriers upon 808 nm NIR illumination, thereby increasing the yields of germicidal reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, the photothermal effect of the 2D/1D heterostructure is significantly strengthened due to the synergy of plasmonic CoNWs and MXene semiconductor. The heterostructure coatings on an orthopedic implant can achieve a high antibacterial efficacy of over 90% against Gram-positive/Gram-negative bacteria within 20 min, resulting from the synergistic actions of NIR-triggered ROS and hyperthermia. Besides, in vitro findings indicate that MXene/CoNWs heterojunctions show acceptable cytocompatibility. Accordingly, the two merits make the novel MXene/CoNWs heterojunctions become a promising drug-free antibacterial therapy for cleaning the pathogenic infection and avoiding antibiotic resistance in practice.

The aluminosilicate-based heterogeneous catalysts hold great promise for industrial catalytic ozonation ; however, the lack of exploration into novel active sites and mechanism studies has impeded their development. In this work, we demonstrate that labile oxygen (O lab ) can be generated in mullite (mullite-O lab ) by the introduction of extra Al-O 4 tetrahedral units. In our experiments, mullite-O lab exhibits excellent performance in terms of catalytic ozone activation, with a degradation rate of 87.4 % within 15 min for nonbiodegradable atrazine, corresponding to a high quasi-first-order rate constant ( k , 0.112 min −1 ), while the degradation constant is close to 0 for mullite without O lab . Operando Raman and density functional theory (DFT) simulations further reveal that O lab activates ozone via a novel surface peroxide pathway to generate surface O lab -O* species with a high oxidizing ability. The mullite-O lab is stable with an average Al 3+ leaching of 0.339 ppm during cycling, meeting the effluent discharge standard of the total Al. Moreover, we achieve the kilogram synthesis of mullite-O lab , which shows promising activity in the catalytic ozonation of acrylic fiber wastewater, with the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removal rates of 46.0 %±4.8 % and 24.9 %±2.8 % for 5 cycles. This work is the first to demonstrate the role of O lab in ozone activation and provides an advanced mullite-O lab catalyst for future nonbiodegradable wastewater treatment .
