The electrochemical oxidation of glycerol is considered as a promising route to generate high value-added products. Rationally tuning the electronic structure of Pt catalysts by supporter and modifier is desirable for promoting the activity and stability of glycerol electrooxidation reaction (GEOR). In this work, we report Pt–Bi hybrid nanoparticles anchored hollow titanium nitride nanowires grew on carbon cloth (Pt 1-x -Bi x /TiN HNWs/CC (0≤ x ≤ 1)) as a self-supported monolithic electrode for efficient GEOR. Contributed by 3D porous nanotube structure, high corrosion resistance and conductivity of TiN, and strong electronic coupling effect of Pt, Bi, and TiN, the optimized Pt 0.95 -Bi 0.05 /TiN HNWs/CC electrode exhibits good catalytic activity and stability for GEOR. It shows a high peak current density of 88.4 mA cm −2 or 306.7 mA mg Pt −1 in 0.05 M glycerol +1.0 M KOH solution. After continuous electrolysis for 8 h in 0.05 M glycerol +1.0 M KOH solution at a constant potential of 0.85 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE), a high glycerol conversion of 87.0%, a moderate selectivity of 36.6% for glyceric acid , and a good stability were achieved, which is superior to other compared electrodes and most of the reported Pt–Bi catalysts.

Generally, phosphates are employed to design ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystals. However, phosphates always suffer from too small birefringence to effectively achieve phase matching. Herein, the Sn2+ cation with a stereochemically active lone pair was introduced into a phosphate as a birefringence-active unit, and two tin phosphate halides Sn2PO4X (X = F, Cl) were successfully synthesized. Interestingly, the different coordination environments of the Sn-polyhedron caused by the partial substitution of halide ions (F−/Cl−) with different ionic radii for the oxygen ligands lead to structural transformation from centrosymmetric (CS) Sn2PO4F to noncentrosymmetric (NCS) Sn2PO4Cl. Thus, Sn2PO4X (X = F, Cl) were characterized by enlarged birefringence, and Sn2PO4Cl is type I phase-matchable with a moderate SHG response, and is a potential ultraviolet nonlinear optical material. Furthermore, both phosphates show wide band gaps. Theoretical analysis confirmed that their excellent optical properties result from the synergistic effect of the [SnOX] (X = F, Cl) polyhedra with stereochemically active lone pairs and the [PO4]3− tetrahedron.

Cellulose can be selectively converted into levoglucosenone (LGO), a high-value anhydrosugar, through fast pyrolysis with acidic catalysts. Herein, phosphorus molybdenum tin mixed metal oxides (P-Mo/SnO2) were prepared for the selective production of LGO from the in situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose, where the PO43–, P-support, and Mo6+ species in P-Mo/SnO2 played the determining role in promoting depolymerization, dehydration, and deoxygenation reactions. Pyrolysis-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) tests were carried out to explore the influence of catalyst-to-cellulose (CA-to-CL) ratio, phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) loading, and pyrolytic reaction temperature on LGO preparation. The results demonstrated the maximal LGO yield could reach 17.98 wt % via using P-Mo/SnO2 with the PMA loading of 50 wt % at the pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C and the CA-to-CL ratio of 1:1. Moreover, the highest LGO yield could be up to 12.70 wt % in lab-scale CFP tests at 300 °C and the CA-to-CL ratio of 2:1, and the LGO yield could remain above 10 wt % after five runs of catalyst calcination regeneration.

Developing a highly efficient, cost-effective, and stable bifunctional electrode for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is still a major challenge. This work reports on a novel method for fabricating TiN ceramic membrane supported nitrogen-incorporating NiCo 2 nanowires (NiCo 2 -N/TiN) as a bifunctional electrode. Owing to its unique structure, the ample reaction sites available, and the enhanced mass/charge transport ability, the NiCo 2 -N/TiN electrode exhibits efficient catalytic performance both in HER and OER, with overpotentials of 131 mV at 20 mA·cm −2 for HER and 330 mV at 20 mA·cm −2 for OER, together with excellent stability in alkaline solution. The NiCo 2 -N/TiN electrode only requires a cell voltage of 1.71 V to drive the current density of 20 mA·cm −2 for overall water splitting, which exhibits excellent stability for more than 100000 s. Accordingly, the produced ceramic membrane electrode has a great potential for application in industrial hydrogen production.

Purpose The main objective of this study was to clarify the biodistribution and in vivo toxicological effects of indium-tin oxide nanoparticles (Nano-ITO) in male rats. Methods Dose-response (three divided doses) and time-course studies (six exposure durations) were performed to examine Nano‑ITO-induced pulmonary and systemic toxicity. At the end of the experiment, hematology and serum biochemical parameters were determined, and cytokines levels and oxidative stress were analyzed in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In addition, indium biodistribution following Nano‑ITO exposure was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer to measure indium concentration in the lung, spleen, brain, liver, kidney, and testis. Rat lung tissues were also harvested for staining with hematoxylin and eosin, periodic acid Schiff stain, Masson’s trichrome, and Sirius red. Results Relative lung weights were significantly increased in all Nano-ITO-exposed groups. All organs exhibited a statistically significant difference in indium levels. Rat exposure to Nano‑ITO resulted in a dose-response increase in acute systemic inflammation and injury. BALF analysis revealed significantly elevated levels of lung oxidative stress, pulmonary injury, and inflammatory markers across most groups. Serum biochemistry results showed that Nano-ITO could affect the liver and renal functions of rats when exposed for 3 days. Compared with the control group, significant inflammatory responses or pathological changes were observed in the liver, kidney, and testis of rats at different sampling times and three doses examined. Histopathologically, foci of slight-to-severe pulmonary inflammatory response along with acute inflammatory, pulmonary fibrosis and alveolar proteinosis were detected, and the severity of these lesions worsened in a dose- and time-dependent manner.Discussion These findings provide novel evidence that enhanced progressive massive pulmonary fibrosis, diffuse interstitial fibrosis, and collagen accumulation play a role in the development of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis following Nano-ITO exposure.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is considered a promising platform chemical, from which numerous chemicals can be produced. Hence, developing an efficient catalytic system to convert glucose into HMF has drawn considerable attention. In this study, a series of Lewis acidic Sn–Cr bimetallic metal–organic frameworks, MIL-101(Cr, Sn), with different Sn ion loading were synthesized hydrothermally using acetic acid as the mineralizer and water as the solvent. The resulting MIL-101(Cr, Sn) was systematically analyzed as a catalyst for the conversion of sugar to HMF. Moreover, the effects exerted by various reaction parameters on HMF yield and selectivity were investigated. With glucose as the substrate and 0.5-wt% H 2 SO 4 as a catalyst, an 85.75% glucose conversion with 22.64% HMF yield and 26.41% selectivity was achieved. Meanwhile, these parameters were improved via addition of MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1. That is, glucose conversion, HMF yield, and selectivity were increased to 86.36%, 60.75%, and 70.35%, respectively, when using MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1 and H 2 SO 4 as the catalyst under the same reaction conditions. The MIL-101(Cr, Sn) structure enabled high stability of the catalyst in aqueous solutions with different pH values, while improving its thermal stability. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused several times despite a slight reduction in its catalytic activity . The current results illustrate that MIL-101(Cr, Sn) is an excellent acid and sustainable catalyst for the production of HMF from fructose, glucose, and starch .

Efficient production of renewable p -xylene (PX) from bio-based 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and ethylene is challenging. Herein, novel nanoflake-like zirconium-tin phosphate catalysts were synthesized, and their catalytic performance was evaluated in the conversion of DMF and ethylene to PX. The DMF conversion, PX selectivity and PX yield reached up to 99%, 95.2% and 94.2%, respectively over Zr 0.6 Sn 0.4 P under relatively mild conditions. The PX productivity was 61.1 mmol PX ·g cat −1 ·h −1 , which is better than that of previously reported catalysts. By combining characterization with activity test, it was found that enhanced DMF and ethylene adsorption is beneficial to promoting the reaction between DMF and ethylene. Precise regulation of acid sites is crucial for inhibiting the occurrence of side reactions and improving the selectivity of PX. The kinetic analysis revealed that Zr 0.6 Sn 0.4 P had a relatively low apparent activation energy (39 kJ·mol −1 ) for this reaction than previously reported catalysts. In addition, the Zr 0.6 Sn 0.4 P catalyst exhibited an excellent reusability.

Solar photothermal steam generation promises decentralized water purification, but the lack of materials that have strong sunlight absorption in wide spectral range, superior thermal management, large specific surface area as well as good water wettability limits the overall solar water purification efficiency. Herein, porous TiN nanospheres are prepared for solar water purification. The monodispersed porous TiN nanospheres are prepared through the wet-chemistry synthesis of TiO 2 and followed nitridation. The prepared porous TiN nanospheres have relatively large specific surface area and very good hydrophilicity. In comparison with solid TiN nanospheres, the porous counterparts have stronger light absorption and better thermal management. The optimum solar evaporation film prepared with the porous TiN nanospheres and filter membrane (TiN/FM) exhibits a reflectance smaller than ∼ 19% in the entire solar spectrum. All these merits of the porous TiN nanospheres give rise to a water evaporation rate of 1.68 kg m -2 h −1 and a solar-steam conversion efficiency of 93.4% under AM 1.5 irradiation. Both seawater and polluted water can be purified to potable water with TiN/FM. Our work not only provides a preparation approach for monodispersed porous TiN nanospheres but also demonstrates the great potential of porous plasmonic nanoparticles for the future development of solar water purification.

Molecular solution with the metal-thiourea complex is a facile and effective route for Cu 2 SnS 3 (CTS) thin film deposition . However, its stability is still challenging due to flexible metal salts precursors. Here we report a strategy to enhance the stability of the Cu–Sn–S molecular solution that use bivalent Sn to suppress the oxidation of the S 2- of thiourea via the redox reaction . The self-stabilizing mechanism has been carefully revealed by the systematic experiments and confirmed by the spontaneous reaction process of metal-thiourea system. It demonstrates that Sn with a low valence state weakens the transfer of lone pair electrons from thiourea to Cu 2+ and Sn 4+ ions, alleviating the sulfur precipitates from thiourea oxidation because of the easily reducible character of Sn 2+ ion. The solution with Sn 2+ antioxidant additive can be stored for a long time under air ambient, which is then spin-coated and sulfurized with Sn powder compensation. The uniform CTS thin film with composition control is finally achieved and delivers a device efficiency of 1.15%. This work provides a guide on stabilizing the solution precursor for chalcogenide thin film deposition.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is an important semiconductor material , because of increasing commercial products consumption and potentially exposed workers worldwide. So, urgently we need to assess and manage potential health risks of ITO. Although the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) has been established for ITO exposure, there is still a lack of distinguishing the risks of exposure to particles of different sizes. Therefore, obtaining toxicological data of small-sized particles will help to improve its risk assessment data. Important questions raised in quantitative risk assessments for ITO particles are whether biodistribution of ITO particles is affected by particle size and to what extent systematic adverse responses is subsequently initiated. In order to determine whether this toxicological paradigm for size is relevant in ITO toxic effect, we performed comparative studies on the toxicokinetics and sub-acute toxicity test of ITO in mice. The results indicate both sized-ITO resided in the lung tissue and slowly excreted from the mice, and the smaller size of ITO being cleared more slowly. Only a little ITO was transferred to other organs, especially with higher blood flow. Two type of ITO which deposit in the lung mainly impacts respiratory system and may injure liver or kidney. After sub-acute exposure to ITO, inflammation featured by neutrophils infiltration and fibrosis with both dose and size effects have been observed. Our findings revealed toxicokinetics and dose-dependent pulmonary toxicity in mice via oropharyngeal aspiration exposure, also replenish in vivo risk assessment of ITO. Collectively, these data indicate that under the current OEL, there are potential toxic effects after exposure to the ITO particles. The observed size-dependent biodistribution patterns and toxic effect might be important for approaching the hazard potential of small-sized ITO in an occupational environment.

Tin-glycerate (Sn-Gly) spheres were synthesized through a simple solvothermal strategy, which was further thermally converted into SnO 2 . It is found that the loose SnO 2 spheres have been built up from nanoparticles with about 10 nm in size. The use of such SnO 2 nanostructures was further performed for low-ppm-level acetone detection. The results showed that the SnO 2 presented response of 123 to 100 ppm acetone vapor at 260 °C. The sensor also exhibited rapid response/recovery time (24.5 s/6.5 s), low detection limit (1.5 at 1 ppm), excellent selectivity, and good reproducibility. Especially, a good linearity ranging from 1 to 100 ppm acetone was fitted, making it a promising candidate for acetone detection.

The non-linear absorption properties of reduced graphene-oxide (RGO) have been studied extensively but the optical limiting (OL) performance of RGO was always confined to visible light. In this study, by anchoring SnSe nanosheets onto the surface of RGO, the reduced graphene-oxide and a tin-selenide (SnSe/RGO) nanohybrid shows a broader reverse saturable absorption (RSA), ranging from 400 to 800 nm, and an enhanced non-linear optical (NLO) response. The improvement of the NLO absorption response is attributed to a multiphoton-absorption process and electron-transfer effect in this artificially constructed donor-acceptor system. Pump-probe experiments suggest a response time of ~1.7–8 ps for the SnSe/RGO nanohybrid.
