Controlled release formulations have been shown to have potential in overcoming the drawbacks of conventional plant growth regulators formulations. A controlled-release formulation of 1-naphthylacetic acid (NAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) simultaneous intercalated MgAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was prepared. The synthetic nanohybrid material was characterized by various techniques, and release kinetics was studied. NAA and IBA anions located in the gallery of MgAl-LDHs with bilayer arrangement, and the nanohybrids particles were of typical plate-like shape with the lateral size of 50–100 nm. The results revealed that NAA and IBA have been intercalated into the interlayer spaces of MgAl-LDHs. The release of NAA and IBA fits pseudo-second-order model and is dependent on temperature, pH value, and release medium. The nanohybrids of NAA and IBA simultaneously intercalated in LDHs possessed good controlled release properties.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) presents a significant challenge for the delivery of chemotherapy drugs to brain tumors, leading to ineffective drug concentrations at the tumor site and contributing to chemotherapy resistance. The hypoxic tumor microenvironment further complicates this process, ultimately resulting in poor patient prognosis. In this study, we developed a thermoresponsive nanocarrier system that incorporates (Ru)(Pt) bimetallic nanoparticles onto defective TiOx nanoparticles with abundant oxygen vacancies, generating composite Ru/Pt-TiOx nanoparticles with photothermal and photocatalytic properties. The Ru and Pt in the nanoparticles enhance the metal–carrier interactions, with Ru increasing both light absorption and photothermal conversion efficiency and Pt catalyzing the conversion of endogenous H 2 O 2 in tumors to produce oxygen. The oxygen produced within the tumor microenvironment reduces HIF-1α, MDR1 and P-gp expression, thereby inhibiting efflux and allowing doxorubicin to accumulate inside the cells. DOX was incorporated into a phase change material and combined with multiple Ru/Pt-TiOx nanoparticles to form composite RPTiOx-DOX particles that can control the release of DOX under near-infrared irradiation. In an effort to overcome the blocking effect of the BBB, we wrapped the RPTiOx-DOX nanoparticles with Angiopep-2-functionalized macrophage exosome membranes. Furthermore, the changes in the internal environment promote macrophage phenotypic transformation (M2→M1) to some extent and further inhibit tumor growth via immunoregulation. In this work, a novel drug delivery system capable of traversing the BBB and exerting synergistic antitumor effects through photostimulated therapeutic agents is described, providing innovative insights for the development of stimulus-responsive composite nanoparticle drug formulations.

Degradable chiral mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DCMSN) are synthesized for selective loading and controlled release of S-naproxen (S-NPX). Chiral silane coupling agent (APTES-L) and degradable silane coupling agent (APTES-CN) are synthesized, respectively, which are used for the synthesis of DCMSN. APTES-L endows the DCMSN with chirality, while APTES-CN endows the DCMSN with degradability. Owing to the same rotatory directions of DCMSN and S-NPX, the DCMSN can be used for the selective loading of S-NPX, and the higher selectivity of DCMSN toward S-NPX is further confirmed by the thermodynamic computations. Further, the S-NPX loaded DCMSN (DCMSN-S-NPX) is encapsulated in the hydrogels cross-linked by carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and cystamine (Cys). The TEM characterization reveals that the DCMSN has a regular and spherical shape, and the BET analysis demonstrates that the DCMSN is a typical mesoporous material. The thermogravimetry reveals that the contents of the silane coupling agents in the DCMSN are about 23.9 %. The results of UV and circular dichroism (CD) spectra indicate a higher selectivity of DCMSN toward S-NPX. The release of S-NPX from the hydrogels is controlled by pH and glutathione (GSH), and the release of S-NPX follows a zero-order equation. Cytotoxicity assay indicates that the drug-free hydrogels have excellent biocompatibility.

The polyurethane coatings of controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) have problems with low biomass content and poor degradability. The residual coatings tend to be present in the soil as microplastics, which limits their environmentally sustainable application. This study prepared a fully bio-based polyurethane CO-LTI mainly from castor oil (CO) and ethyl ester L-lysine triisocyanate (LTI) using the one-pot method. The CO-LTI coatings have nutrient-controlled release properties. As the coating percentage increased from 3 % to 6 %, the minimum cross-sectional thickness of the coating measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) increased from 19 μm to 42 μm, which prolonged the time of controlled release under the effect of physical barrier. The CO-LTI coatings have good biodegradability in soil, with a remarkable biodegradation rate of 27 % within 12 months. The degradation properties of CO-LTI coatings were characterized using various techniques, including SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The biodegradation mechanism of the CO-LTI coating in soil was elucidated, and it was confirmed that the degradation was carried out under the action of chemical degradation related to microorganisms. The effects of coating residues on plant growth and soil bacterial communities were simulated by applying CRFs with different concentration gradients. They were confirmed to be related to the coating's concentration gradient and degradation process. This study provides a new approach for preparing environmentally friendly controlled-release fertilizers and valuable insights into the potential mechanisms of biodegradation and its impact on ecological environments.

Magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) play an essential role in the metabolism and regeneration of bone tissue. Appropriate amounts of Mg 2+ have been shown to promote osteogenic differentiation of bone-derived cells and angiogenesis of endothelial cells. However, the initial burst release of Mg 2+ may compromise the osteogenic effect, so the controlled release of Mg 2+ is the critical consideration of the magnesium-containing tissue-engineered bone materials. This study proposes a microsphere-hydrogel complex to enhance the sustained-release effect and prolong the release cycle of Mg 2+ . For the initial release of Mg 2+ , polylactic acid (PLA) microspheres containing MgO and MgCO 3 were fabricated with uniform morphology. Further microspheres were incorporated into the chitosan-based hydrogel to form microsphere- hydrogel complex for extended release. The complex demonstrated effective sustained release of Mg 2+ over a period exceeding 28 days. In vitro cell experiments, CS/PLA@MgO-MgCO 3 significantly enhanced migration and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1. Meanwhile, it can facilitate the generation of blood vessels in HUVECs. In conclusion, the magnesium-loaded microsphere-hydrogel complex achieves excellent dual sustained-release properties with an extended-release cycle while enhancing vascularized osteogenic activity in vitro , showing promising prospects for clinical application in bone defect treatment.

Developing a bio-based membrane shell with excellent damage resistance and self-repairing capabilities is an effective strategy for enhancing the quality and efficacy of membrane-coated controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs). We present a simple and practical method to incorporate dynamic disulfide and hydrogen bonds into polyurethane to form a dynamic covalent network, which greatly improves the mechanical properties, damage resistance, and self-repair performance of polyurethane membrane shells. The novel membrane shell was coated on bio-based polyurethane CRF (BPCRF) to produce the self-repairing bio-polyurethane-coated CRF (SBPCRF). The SBPCRF product exhibited excellent controlled-release performance, and the nitrogen release life span increased by >50 % (by more than 20 days) than BPCRF. SBPCRF also exhibited remarkable damage resistance and exceptional self-repairing performance with a repair efficiency of 92.2 % at 25 °C. Additionally, nitrogen release life span of the damaged SBPCRF can extended by 30 days than the damaged BPCRF. Furthermore, the membrane shell exhibited exceptional tensile elongation (1229 %) and tensile strength (5.271 MPa). The application of SBPCRF on maize also exhibited high nitrogen utilization (>60 %). Density-functional theory calculations indicated that the reorganization of dynamic disulfide bonds spontaneously occurred after breaking and then induced the responsible repair process of the material. This research provides insights into the development of coating materials that maintain the integrity of the membrane shell and ensure stable nutrient release throughout the crop life span and offers a novel strategy for the advancement of sustainable agriculture.

The aging population and the increasing prevalence of sports-related injuries have made osteochondral defects a major global health issue. The repair of osteochondral defect is still a challenge due to poor regeneration of both cartilage and bone tissues. To address this issue, this study developed a biomimetic dual-layer scaffold based on SilMA hydrogel using DLP technology. For the upper area of scaffold, PEGDA was used to enhance the mechanical strength of SilMA hydrogel, making it more suitable for the environment of articular cartilage, while cell microspheres were incorporated as 3D carriers for chondrocyte encapsulation and delivery, providing seed cells for regeneration. For the lower area of scaffold, the lower part was loaded with hydroxyapatite to promote bone tissue regeneration. This study systematically investigated the design of 3D printable inks for osteochondral defect repair, exploring the effects of PEGDA and HAp on the printability and physicochemical properties of SilMA bioink through orthogonal experiments. In vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that the biomimetic dual-layer scaffold exhibited good biocompatibility, promoting cell adhesion and proliferation. Thus, these dual-layer scaffolds loaded with chondrocyte microspheres effectively promote the synchronous repair of both articular cartilage and subchondral bone.

BACKGROUND Pyrethroids are widely used insecticides due to their efficacy and safety for humans, yet their toxicity to beneficial insects like bees remains a critical environmental concern. Developing controlled-release formulations to mitigate non-target toxicity and enhance pesticide efficiency is imperative for sustainable agriculture. RESULTS In this experiment, two types of PCN-222 materials, with small and large particle sizes, were synthesized using a solvothermal method. Bifenthrin (Bif) was loaded onto PCN-222 to prepare the controlled-release agent Bif@PCN-222. The structure and properties of the prepared materials were characterized by morphology observation, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and contact angle measurements. The experimental findings indicated that Bif@PCN-222 demonstrated excellent release performance under alkaline conditions and exhibited better wettability on cabbage leaves compared to commercial formulations. Additionally, the Bif@PCN-222 controlled-release agent significantly improved resistance to UV photodegradation. Safety evaluations showed that Bif@PCN-222 had minimal impact on the growth of Zoysia grass and notably reduced toxicity to bees. CONCLUSION These results show that we have successfully prepared Bif@PCN-222, which can enhance the pest control effect, reduce the toxicity to non - target organisms, and have a relatively small impact on plant growth and the number of soil microflora. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

A mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN)-based controlled release system with acid cleavable linkage was developed to fabricate an electrochemical immunosensor for the quantitative detection of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). 3,9-Bis(3-aminopropyl)-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5.5]undecane functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-Acetal) were used to immobilize the electron mediator thionine (Th). The encapsulation of Th molecules was achieved by capping the pores of MSN-Acetal with carboxylic acid modified Au nanoparticles (defined as MSN-Th-Au). Under the acidic conditions, the capped Au nanoparticles were removed from MSN-Th-Au through the hydrolysis of the acid-labile acetal linker, resulting in the release of encapsulated Th. In this work, the pH-responsive cargo release system was firstly used as the label of secondary anti-PSA for developing an electrochemical immunosensor, and amination Fe 3 O 4 was used as the sensing matrix for immobilizing primary anti-PSA on magnetic carbon electrode surfaces . The specific recognition of PSA resulted in the attachment of MSN-Th-Au-secondary anti-PSA (MSN-Th-Au-Ab 2 ) onto the electrode surfaces. Subsequently, the released Th was detected by differential pulse voltammetry under the acidic conditions. The developed cargo release system provided an innovative and reliable method for the detection of PSA because the response signal was correlated with the concentration of PSA. Under the optimal conditions, the electrochemical immunosensor exhibited a wide linear range of 0.001–5.0 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 0.31 pg/mL. Moreover, the developed immunosensor showed superior reproducibility and long-term stability, which has promising applications in bioassay and biosensing.

Despite the fact that heart transplantation (HTx) is a relatively mature procedure, heart ischemic and reperfusion (I/R) injury during HTx remains a challenge. Even after a successful operation, the heart will be at risk of primary graft failure and mortality during the first year. In this study, temperature-sensitive polymer poly(N-n-propylacrylamide-co-N-tert-butyl acrylamide) (PNNTBA) was coated on diallyl trisulfide (DATS)-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DATS-MSN) to synthesize hypothermia-triggered hydrogen sulfide (H2S) releasing particles (HT-MSN). Because the PNNTBA shell dissolves in phosphate-buffered saline at 4 °C, the loaded DATS could continuously release H2S within 6 h when activated by glutathione (GSH). Furthermore, after co-culturing biocompatible HT-MSN with cardiomyocytes, H2S released from HT-MSN at 4 °C was found to protect cardiomyocytes from ischemic and reperfusion (I/R) injury. In detail, the rate of cell apoptosis and lactate dehydrogenase activity was decreased, as manifested by increased BCL-2 expression and decreased BAX expression. More importantly, in an isolated heart preservation experiment, HT-MSN demonstrated potent protection against cardiac I/R injury and reduced expression of inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-1β. This study provided a new method for the controlled release of H2S by the donor and myocardial protection from I/R injury.

Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), a promising alternative fumigant, has been highly desirable for excellent management of soil pests and diseases. However, high volatility and moderate toxicity of this sulfide limit its application. To address these issues, a novel controlled release formulation of DMDS was proposed employing multiple emulsions and polyurea microcapsules (DMDS@MEs-MCs). The successful combination of the two technologies was revealed by confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared. According to the multiple encapsulation structure, the encapsulation efficiency decreased by only 3.13% after thermal storage, compared with a 15.21% decrease of microcapsules made with only a monolayer film. DMDS@MEs-MCs could effectively control the release of active ingredient, which increased applicator and environmental safety during application. Moreover, it could be facilely used by spraying and drip irrigation instead of a special fumigation device. The innovative formulation exhibited better control efficacy on soil pathogens (Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora spp.) and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) than DMDS technical concentration (DMDS TC). In addition, it did not inhibit seed germination after 10 days when the plastic film was removed from the fumigated soil. This method appears to be of broad interest for the development of safe and handy fumigant application.

Honeysuckle is a commonly used Chinese medicine for treating intestinal inflammation and other diseases. Compounds that are absorbed into the blood produce pharmacodynamic effects. However, it is still unclear which compounds in honeysuckle are absorbed into the blood. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the composition and in vivo absorption of active components in honeysuckle in male Sprague-Dawley rats, and develop a controlled release hydrogel system. UPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS was used to determine the active ingredients of honeysuckle in vitro and in vivo . A total of 80, out of which 42 components were found to be absorbed into the blood, which includes flavonoids, iridoids, organic acids and other compounds. FTIR analysis confirmed crosslinking between hydrogel content and drug loading, and TGA and DSC analysis indicated a high thermal stability. XRD analysis showed a decrease in crystallinity following crosslinking, and SEM revealed an irregular and hard surface. The maximum swelling and drug release were observed at pH 7.4 as compared to pH 1.2. The identified blood components can be used to determine Q-markers, while the prepared hydrogels can serve as an effective and promising carrier for the controlled release of honeysuckle extracts.
