Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a highly carcinogenic mycotoxin, poses significant threats to feed safety and human health, even at trace levels. To address the demand for trace detection of AFB1, we proposed a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor based on photonic crystal microspheres (PCMs) for a wide-range and ultrasensitive quantitative detection of AFB1. This sensor employed SERS nanotags of gold–silver core–shell nanostars embedded with Raman reporter molecules as the enhancement substrate. Its surface protrusions can generate strong plasmon resonance, which further forms extremely intense “hot spots”─a structural feature that renders it significantly superior to spherical nanoparticles in trace detection. Experimental results demonstrate that the developed sensor exhibits an excellent detection performance. Furthermore, benefiting from the unique structural color of PCMs, the sensor is capable of detecting trace amounts of AFB1 in complex matrices. The limit of detection (LOD) reached 0.988 pg/mL, and the linear dynamic range (LDR) was from 1 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL. Additionally, the sensor exhibits excellent specificity, reproducibility, and stability. After 14 days of storage, the sample retained 89.2% of its initial performance. In practical applications, it showed good consistency with commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. All of these results demonstrate that the proposed method has great potential for trace detection and is expected to provide a novel integrated analytical platform with low background, high sensitivity, and a wide detection range for feed safety monitoring.

Establishing accurate, sensitive, and high-throughput pesticide residue detection technologies is crucial for ensuring food safety. In this study, we developed a quartz plate cover to level the liquid surface and maintain consistent laser focus during SERS acquisition. This design significantly improved signal uniformity and reproducibility across multiple wells. By leveraging the sharp Raman peak at 2155 cm −1 , one-step synthesized gold@Prussian blue nanoparticles (Au@PB NPs) were employed to eliminate spectral interference from complex food matrices and target. In the competitive immunoassay, thiamethoxam (TXM) in the sample competed with TXM antigen-conjugated magnetic beads for binding to the probes. Higher TXM concentrations resulted in reduced binding of SERS probes to the capture substrate and a subsequent decrease in Raman intensity at 2155 cm −1 . Uder optimized conditions, the platform achieved a linear detection range of 1-100 ng/mL and a detection limit of 0.19 ng/mL. The method was validated in pear, leek, and celery samples, showing high accuracy and consistency with HPLC-MS/MS results. This automated SERS platform combines strong anti-interference capability and signal stability with scalable high-throughput performance, providing a robust solution for the trace-level detection of pesticide residues in complex matrices.

Amonolayer film of thiosalicylic acid (TSA) adsorbed on activated gold electrodes was investigated by using in situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman scattering (EC-SERS). In the SERS spectra of selfassembled monolayers in solutions with different pH values, two peaks with
Raman intensities that decreased with increasing pH were observed. The optimum EC-SERS signals were obtained at 0.7 V and 70 s, and it was found that the intensities became weaker, and the peaks eventually disappeared, when the potential was negatively shifted. This showed that the alignments
of TSA assembled on the gold surface changed in response to changes in the external conditions. The absorption mechanism of the TSA monolayer was investigated by calculating the distribution fraction of TSA at different pH values and the enhancement factor (EF) at different potentials, using
a combination of SERS and EC-SERS. As a result of different electrochemical absorption orientations of TSA and its reduction/desorption behavior at high negative potentials, the Raman enhanced effect of TSA on gold was significantly reduced and the SERS activity was irreversibly lost.

Water-soluble and stable dispersions of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were obtained using a straightforward one-step synthesis method. Polyacrylamide (PAM), a kind of water-soluble polymer with polar amide group, is used as stabilizing agent to prevent the aggregation of Ag NPs in aqueous medium. The successful formation of PAM-stabilized Ag NPs was demonstrated by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the SERS-active substrate made of Ag NPs was fabricated to enhance the Raman signal of R6G and graphene. The significant SERS effective makes the as-synthesized substrate to be widely used in practical applications for routine SERS analysis and water environment biological monitoring.

Ag-decorated TiO 2 inverse opal films (ATIO) with high surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement were prepared using an electroless deposition process. The Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are well-dispersed and deposited on the edge of macroporous walls. The structure and optical properties of the sample ATIO have been characterized. The Ag-loading cycles and pore sizes of TiO 2 inverse opal are the key factors determining the magnitude of SERS signal enhancement. The optimized ATIO samples exhibit high SERS signal enhancement ability and reproducibility. The enhancement factor about 10 4 and the detection limit of 10 −10 M for R6G were achieved. The further application in detecting malachite green is demonstrated. A limit of detection approximately 10 −9 M was achieved. The results show that the ATIO nanostructure is promising for using as sensor substrates in SERS applications.

Multidimensional tea profiling is crucial for both consumer experience, brand reputation, and market integrity. Here, we introduce a rapid and systematic strategy for multidimensional tea authentication based on a single surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) measurement integrated with machine learning. We first demonstrated, through machine learning analyses of individual variables, that a single SERS spectrum inherently encodes multidimensional information encompassing tea category, grade, storage quality, and pesticide residue levels.Partial least squares discriminant analysis enabled highly accurate classification of tea categories and grades (accuracies ≥ 98.9%), while support vector machine regression achieved precise prediction of storage quality and pesticide residue levels (R 2 > 0.99). Building upon these results, we developed a two-tier framework that integrates these multidimensional predictions from a single spectrum, enabling comprehensive authentication in one step. This framework was further implemented in a user-friendly application for real-time, singlespectrum analysis, achieving an overall accuracy of 98.2%. Collectively, this work demonstrates that SERS coupled with machine learning provides an efficient, cost-effective, and scalable approach for multidimensional tea authentication, offering a foundation for collaborative improvement and data sharing across the tea industry.

Rapid, ultrasensitive, and specific detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains challenging, particularly for micro-volume samples. This study presents a capillary-based three-dimensional Ag/ZnO nanorod surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) biosensing platform that enables dual-mode (liquid and aerosol) viral detection within the same device. The capillary configuration inherently provides a large surface-to-volume ratio and acts as a confined reaction chamber, eliminating the need for external liquid or gas cells while minimizing sample consumption. Vertically aligned Ag/ZnO nanorod arrays grown on the inner wall further increase the density of electromagnetic hotspots, achieving an enhancement factor of 1.07 × 10 ¹ ¹ with excellent signal uniformity (RSD = 4.65%). After ACE2 functionalization, the biosensor enables label-free, direct detection of the 2019-nCoV antigen S protein in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and pharyngeal swabs solution (PSS), with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 fg/mL. In addition, a sandwich-structured sensing configuration was designed to further amplify the Raman response. Importantly, without additional instrumentation, the same capillary SERS platform also enables direct detection of the 2019-nCoV antigen S protein aerosol with a LOD of 10 fg/mL and the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Pseudovirus at 100 fg/mL. This biosensor integrates sampling, enrichment, and readout in a low-volume device, reduces the risk of cross-contamination, and maintains high analytical performance.

Urine pH is an important biomarker related to metabolic status and urinary system health, but reliable SERS quantification in real urine remains limited by matrix interference, heterogeneous hotspot distribution, and the narrow response range of single pH-responsive molecules. Here, we report a core–gap–shell Au@1,4-BDT@Au@4-MBA/MPY nanoprobe for ratiometric SERS detection of urine pH. 1,4-BDT was confined within the gap between the gold core and shell as an internal standard, while 4-MBA and 4-MPY were co-assembled on the outer gold shell to provide complementary protonation/deprotonation responses. The internal standard-corrected ratio I1004/I1400/I731reduced signal fluctuation and enabled segmented linear fitting over pH = 1.0–7.0 and pH = 7.0–10.0, with coefficients of determination of 0.98806 and 0.99989, respectively. The sensing platform also maintained stable ratiometric responses under different interference conditions. In real urine samples from five volunteers, SERS-predicted pH values agreed well with commercial pH meter measurements, with relative accuracies of 98.71–101.9% and RSD values below 2.1%. This confined internal standard and dual-molecule ratiometric strategy provides a feasible approach for urine pH sensing in complex biofluid matrices.

Monolithic Ag@SrTiO 3 heterostructure enables synergistic plasmon-vacancy coupling. • Conformal Ag nanoparticle coverage maximizes hotspot density and surface utilization. • Oxygen vacancies promote interfacial charge transfer for enhanced SERS activity. • Ultrasensitive detection of Rhodamine 6G with an EF of 2.46 × 10 8 and 10 −10 M limit. • Photocatalytic self-regeneration enables reusable SERS sensing in water matrices. Orchestrating oxygen-vacancy/plasmon synergy within a monolithic Ag@SrTiO 3 heterostructure yields a self-regenerating SERS metasurface for high-fidelity molecular fingerprinting. Through an in situ reduction strategy, Ag nanoparticles are intimately and conformally anchored across the entire SrTiO 3 nanocube surface, achieving maximal surface utilization and seamless electronic coupling at the heterointerface. This architecture generates densely distributed electromagnetic hotspots within densely packed interparticle regions, while concurrently engineered oxygen vacancies establish low-barrier charge-transfer pathways that facilitate resonant photoinduced electron transfer between substrate and analyte molecules. The synergistic interplay between maximized plasmonic coverage and vacancy-mediated interfacial charge transport delivers an enhancement factor of 2.46 × 10 8 with detection limits down to 10 −10 M for Rhodamine 6G. Beyond sensitivity, intrinsic photocatalytic activity imparts self-regenerating capability, enabling complete degradation of residual analytes under UV irradiation within 30 min and sustaining reproducible performance over multiple detection cycles. Reliable quantification in river water matrices confirms practical viability for trace contaminant analysis. This work establishes oxygen-vacancy-mediated interfacial engineering-coupled with conformal plasmonic integration-as a transformative strategy for transforming a widely available perovskite into a high-performance, reusable SERS platform, advancing the design of intelligent sensing materials through synergistic heterointerface optimization. The fabrication of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with high hotspot density and superior sensitivity is a critical bottleneck limiting their practical applications. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) SERS substrate based on high-density Cu@Ag bimetallic heterostructured nanoflowers (Cu@Ag NF) was constructed using citric acid etching-assisted electrochemical deposition (ED) technology and high-vacuum electron beam evaporation coating technology, which provides an efficient and low-cost preparation process for the SERS substrate. The performance of a Cu@Ag 3D-SERS substrate was evaluated systematically using crystal violet (CV) as the probe molecule. This substrate exhibited a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 10–12 M (pM), and the signal intensities at its five characteristic peaks were more than 10 times higher than those of the Ag@ITO substrate, indicating its high sensitivity. In addition, the substrate demonstrated excellent uniformity (relative standard deviation (RSDs) < 11% for 15 randomly tested points) and long-term stability (no significant signal attenuation after 2 weeks of storage at room temperature). This work provides valuable guidance for the facile, scalable, and low-cost fabrication of high-performance SERS substrates, and presents a reliable strategy for the detection of trace organic pollutants in practical scenarios.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a secondary metabolite produced by fungi that contaminates food during the process of production and storage, and can potentially cause acute or chronic poisoning upon ingestion. This study employs surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with density functional theory (DFT) to detect the pure DON sample. The investigation focuses on the adsorption mechanism of DON molecules on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and indicates that the O6 atoms in the DON molecule act as sensitive sites for nucleophilic reactions by using DFT calculations. Experimental results demonstrate that pure DON molecules exhibit a strong SERS response, displaying excellent linear and non-linear relationships across concentration ranges of 0.01–0.2 μg/mL (R 2 = 0.992) and 0.2–1 μg/mL (R 2 = 0.997), respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) are 0.0085 μg/mL and 0.0256 μg/mL, respectively, which show excellent detection sensitivity. These findings can provide a theoretical foundation for monitoring DON toxins in foodstuffs.

Alternariol (AOH) is a secondary toxin produced by the metabolism of Alternaria, which poses a significant food safety risk due to its widespread presence in fruits and vegetables. In this study, a dual-mode sensor based on AOH aptamer was developed, which combined with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and fluorescence (FL) detection technology to achieve sensitive and specific detection of AOH. The sensor significantly improves the reliability of detection through the synergistic change and mutual verification of SERS and FL signals. The linear detection range of SERS mode was 0.5–100 ng/mL ( R 2 = 0.9927), and the detection limit was as low as 0.064 ng/mL. The linear range of FL mode was 1–100 ng/mL ( R 2 = 0.9792), and the detection limit was 0.14 ng/mL. Experiments showed that the sensor could effectively distinguish AOH from other mycotoxins, and showed good recovery (SERS: 84.09 % -101.40 %, FL: 4.69 % -105.57 %) and precision (RSD < 6.3 % and 8.9 %, respectively) in complex matrices such as kiwifruit, tomato and citrus. The results were consistent with those of the traditional LC-MS method, which verified its reliability. The sensing platform constructed in this study not only provides a reliable technical means for the trace detection of AOH in agricultural products, but also opens up a new way for the rapid screening and quantitative analysis of other mycotoxins in food matrices.
