2D Al-MOF with ultrathin nanoflake-assembled hollow microstructures for electrochemical hydrogen peroxide production

Ziwei Zhang,Jinhan Guo,Zhongying Fang,Yue Zheng,Leting Zhang,Xiaolong Liang,Rupeng Liu,Jiancheng Zhao,Wenhui He,Lehui Lu,Wei Chen

Electrochemical transformation from oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is one of the promising green techniques to synthesis H 2 O 2 . However, due to the competing two processes of 2e − and 4e − ORR with different products, designing and synthesizing highly selective and active 2e − ORR electrocatalysts for H 2 O 2 production is fundamentally and practically important. In this work, we used a simple solvothermal method and self-template strategy to create ultrathin 2D Al-MOF nanosheets for efficient electrocatalytic synthesis of H 2 O 2 by 2e − ORR. The presence of a mixed solvent and sulfate ion is critical to the formation of the specific structure. Naturally, their ultrathin morphology and abundant mesoporous formation leads to the sufficient exposure of electrochemically active sites and high mass/electron transfer capability. Therefore, the Al-MOF NSs show excellent electrocatalytic performance for 2e − ORR. The optimized Al-MOF NSs-1 exhibited the best ORR catalytic performance with almost no overpotential and high selectivity for 2e − ORR to H 2 O 2 (94 %–98 %) in a wide range of low potentials in alkaline electrolyte. Meanwhile, the high reaction rate of 2.56 molg cat −1 h −1 for H 2 O 2 production has also been achieved at 0.6 V. Furthermore, the Al-MOF NSs-1 enable to catalyze H 2 O 2 production with excellent durability and selectivity after long-term stability test (10,000 cycles) and 11 h of potentiostatic electrolysis. The present study indicates the promising application of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) materials in H 2 O 2 electrochemical synthesis.

Preparation and Application of Si@Al Adsorbents for Different Pollutants Removal from Aqueous Solution

Xiaoyu Xu,Jiahua Liu,Yuang Cao,Han Wang,Keqiang Zhang,Chein-Chi Chang,Suli Zhi

This study tried to use electroflocculating precipitated waste to prepare a Si@Al adsorbent by simply mixing sodium silicate at a mass ratio of 4:1 and calcining at 200 °C for 2 h. The adsorbent was low cost, high efficiency, and could remove a variety of contaminants (organic pollutants, antibiotics, and metal ions) from water. In this study, adsorbent characterization and pollutant adsorption experiments were carried out. The results showed that: Si@Al adsorbent had uniform particles, distinct layers, a loose porous appearance, and the internal structure was scattered without a crystal structure. The optimal adsorption conditions for tetracycline were as follows: dosage of adsorbent 2.0 g/L, reaction time 10 min, pH = 4.5, and tetracycline removal rate of 97.13%. The optimal adsorption conditions for MB (MB stands for methylene blue) were an adsorption dosage of 4.0 g/L, a reaction time of 15 min, pH = 4.5–8.5, and a removal rate of 96.39%. The optimal adsorption conditions for Cu were a 2.0 g/L dosage of adsorbent, a reaction time of 30 min, a pH of 8.5, and a highest removal rate of 97.47%. It was worth noting that the effect of temperature on TC, MB and Cu was not significant. At the same time, the kinetic fitting results showed that the adsorption of MB was more consistent with the quasi-second-order kinetic model, with R2ranging from 0.9788 to 1.0000. The adsorption of TC and Cu was more consistent with the quasi-first-order kinetic model, with R2ranging from 0.9598 to 0.9999 and 0.9844 to 0.9988, respectively. According to the results of thermodynamics, kinetics and zero potential point, the adsorption of tetracycline and methylene blue was mainly a physical adsorption, multilayer heterogeneous or single-layer homogeneous adsorption process. The adsorption of Cu was categorized as multi-layer heterogeneous chemical adsorption. The co-existing substances had little effect on the properties of the adsorbent, and the adsorbent could be recycled 5 times. Compared with other adsorbents, the results showed that the adsorbents had obvious advantages in terms of the raw material source, preparation method, time cost and removal effect. This study provided a “waste into treasure, green and efficient” multi-pollutant adsorption method.

Preparation of Al@FTCS/P(VDF-HFP) Composite Energetic Materials and Their Reaction Properties

Xiang Ke,Lifang Deng,Yanping Wang,Kai Tang,Lei Xiao,Gazi Hao,Peili Li,Xiang Zhou

Strengthening the interfacial contact between the reactive components effectively boosts the energy release of energetic materials. In this study, we aimed to create a close-knit interfacial contact condition between aluminum nanoparticles (Al NPs) and Polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (P(VDF-HFP)) through hydrolytic adsorption and assembling 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorododecyltrichlorosilane (FTCS) on the surface of Al NPs. Leveraging hydrogen bonding between –CF and –CH and the interaction between C–F⋯F–C groups, the adsorbed FTCS directly leads to the growth of the P(VDF-HFP) coating layer around the treated Al NPs, yielding Al@FTCS/P(VDF-HFP) energetic composites. In comparison with the ultrasonically processed Al/P(VDF-HFP) mixture, thermal analysis reveals that Al@FTCS/P(VDF-HFP) exhibits a 57 °C lower reaction onset temperature and a 1646 J/g increase in heat release. Associated combustion tests demonstrate a 52% shorter ignition delay, 62% shorter combustion time, and a 288% faster pressurization rate. These improvements in energetic characteristics stem from the reactivity activation of FTCS towards Al NPs by the etching effect to the surface Al2O3. Moreover, enhanced interfacial contact facilitated by the FTCS-directed growth of P(VDF-HFP) around Al NPs further accelerates the whole reaction process.

The effect of graphene concentration on mechanical properties of electrodeposited Al-Graphene composite coating

Na Li,Qiao Li,Yongchao Zhu,Huizhong Ma,Lan Zhang

To enhance the surface hardness and strength of aluminum alloys and achieve low-temperature synthesis of aluminum-graphene composite materials, Al-Graphene composite coatings are electrodeposited on the 7075-aluminum alloy substrate from organic solvent solution system at 25 ℃ containing different graphene concentration. The morphology, microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Graphene composite coating were characterized and reconnoitered. Al-Graphene composite coatings exhibit improved performance significantly. Under the optimal graphene concentration of 7 g L −1 , Al-Graphene shows 5.1-times increase in hardness in comparison with pure Al coating. The elastic modulus has the peak value of 84.4 GPa for Al-Graphene containing 10.64 wt% graphene, which has an increment of 66.2 % compared with pure Al coating. These put down to the remarkable mechanical property of graphene. Moreover, the content and distribution of graphene play a key role in the mechanical properties of Al-Graphene. The alternating well-dispersed graphene and reduced metal layer, simultaneously keep appropriate thickness of reduced metal layer is able to achieve the optimal comprehensive mechanical property, which exhibits promising application potential in aircraft skins, automotive components, and related fields.

Selective SF6/N2 Separation with High Uptake Under Low Pressures by Stable Al-MOF

Shuang Ni,Li Xu,Xi-Ting Zhang,Shao-Min Wang,Qing-Yuan Yang

Efficient and economical capture and separation of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) are critical for emissions mitigation and industrial reuse. Conventional distillation methods remain energy-intensive, prompting the need for cost-effective alternatives. Here, MOF-303, constructed from earth-abundant aluminum and low-cost linkers, features optimally sized pores (8.3 Å) that selectively adsorb SF6 (5.5 Å) over N2 (3.6 Å). This rational pore engineering enables MOF-303 to achieve benchmark SF6 capture (1.91 mmol g–1 at P < 0.1 bar) with exceptional selectivity (148), while its low regeneration energy (22.9 kJ mol–1) ensures practical cycling. Breakthrough experiments confirm robust performance under dynamic conditions. Computational studies reveal how pore geometry enables size-exclusive recognition. Compared to noble-metal adsorbents, MOF-303’s earth-abundant components reduce costs by >70%, offering a sustainable solution for industrial SF6 recovery.

Quantitative assessment of combustion characteristics and carbon sequestration potential of Al/CO2 heterogeneous system

Wenke Zhang,Jianzhong Liu,Haiou Wang,Xueqin Liao,Jianren Fan

Aluminum (Al) combustion in CO 2 was investigated to assess carbon sequestration potential. Theoretical and experimental results identified C(s), Al 4 C 3 (s), and CO(g) as primary products, with C(s) formation being most thermodynamically favorable. Al oxidation in CO 2 proceeded through three stages, with the second stage (activation energy: 260–268 kJ·mol⁻¹) exhibiting the highest reactivity. Kinetic analysis indicated an Anti-Jander/D1 mechanism for this dominant stage. Reducing particle size from 25 μm to 0.1 μm at 0.1 MPa shortened ignition delay by 664 ms and increased combustion temperature by 847 K. Characterization confirmed carbon incorporation in products (Al 2 O 3 /Al 4 C 3 ) and demonstrated enhanced combustion efficiency and carbon fixation with smaller particles or higher pressures. These findings provide critical insights for Martian in-situ resource utilization and carbon capture technologies.

Exploring Mg-Al Bimetallic Oxide Catalysts for Efficient Terephthalic Acid Recovery From Polyethylene Terephthalate

Christina H. M. Tsang,Ruilong Zhang,Wei Xiong,Davidraj Johnravindar,Puranjan Mishra,Jun Zhao

The escalating demand for plastics has necessitated advancements in plastic recycling technologies. This study examines the development of heterogeneous metal catalysts aimed at improving the hydrolysis performance of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a commonly used plastic, and enhancing the conversion efficiency for the efficient production of terephthalic acid (TPA). A series of Mg-Al bimetallic oxide with varying Mg and Al ratios were synthesized and employed as catalysts for the hydrolysis of PET under various conditions, including reaction temperature (80°C–220°C), reaction time (10–300 min), and solvent ratio. Optimization of the process revealed that the optimal conditions for catalytic hydrolysis were achieved at 200°C, 300 min, using a Mg-Al-1 catalyst and a solvent ratio of 5:5 ethanol to water, resulting in a PET conversion efficiency of 95.6% and a TPA yield of 80.3%. Over 70% TPA yield could be generated after first hydrolysis without regeneration. Under hydrothermal conditions, polyethylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol was found after reaction, as identified by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). This study offers a sustainable and feasible pathway for TPA recovery from PET, contributing to the advancement of recycling technologies.

Ratiometric temperature sensing with non-thermally coupled levels from Pr–Al co-doped MgGa2O4

Xiu-Zhen Yang,Tian-Qi Zhao,Renagul Abdurahman,Shi-Ji Liu,Yao-Xing Han,Yue Zhang,Xue-Bo Yin,Jie Gao

Fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique demonstrates significant potential for non-contact temperature sensing with rapid response time, while the design of FIR probes is particularly intriguing. Herein, we report Pr–Al co-doped MgGa 2 O 4 persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs), as MgAl 0.04 Ga 1.96 O 4 : 0.1 % Pr 3+ (MAGP), for ratiometric temperature sensing application. Pr 3+ ions function as the emission centers for dual-emission at 612 and 494 nm, while Al 3+ ions adjust the lattice environment around Pr 3+ ions to enhance the luminescence. Consequently, 274 nm excitation induces the emissions at 494 and 612 nm, as the transitions of Pr 3+ for 3 P 0 → 3 H 4 and 1 D 2 → 3 H 4 , respectively. The emission mechanism is substantiated by density functional theory calculations, regarding the electronic transitions of Pr 3+ . Ratiometric temperature sensing is achieved over the temperature range of 303–573 K with the thermally non-coupled mechanism of the 3 P 0 / 1 D 2 energy levels by FIR at 612 and 494 nm, respectively. The maximum relative sensitivity was 0.91 %. The mechanism is corroborated as the non-thermally coupled energy levels through intervalence charge transfer. Thus, the reversible and sensitive response was illustrated for temperature measurement and the non-thermally coupled mechanism is efficient for the design of ratiometric temperature sensors.

Ru clusters encapsulated with Al-rich zeolite for efficiently catalytic elimination of 1,2-dichloroethane

Xiaonan Guo,Yuanzhe Yu,Runduo Zhang,Shuting Wei,Bin Kang,Ying Wei,Jingbo Jia,Zhou-jun Wang

The Ru-based catalysts with different preparation methods or supports were achieved and applied in efficiently catalytic elimination of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE). It was firstly found that the redox ability and chlorine resistance of the catalyst could be improved by regulating the interaction between Ru and supports. Compared with other supports and conventionally impregnated methods, the Ru@ZSM-5 catalyst synthesized by the in-situ encapsulation strategy exhibited an excellent low-temperature catalytic performance ( T 50  = 262°C, T 90  = 327°C), superior stability in long-term test as well as ideal target products. The acidity, specific surface area, and interaction with precious metals of the supports have significant influences on the catalytic activity, and the Ru clusters inside the pore structures are more closely bound to the framework Al species, which promotes the oxidation behavior. The encapsulation strategy also significantly improves the Ru dispersion thereby facilitates oxygen activation as well as Cl-containing volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) deep oxidation, and preserves large amounts of Brønsted acid sites to optimize the hydrolysis mechanism for purification of CVOCs. Subsequently, the synergistic effect between metal redox and acidity is greatly optimized, thus extremely promoting the catalytic efficiency of 1,2-DCE oxidation.

PVDF-based energetic films with high output performance: Synergistic effect based on Al/Ti

Lejian Chen,Xianghong Xiao,Haofang Yuan,Hongyu Chen,Yuxuan Zhou,Yinghua Ye,RuiQi Shen,Lizhi Wu

With the ongoing advancement of miniaturization and microfabrication, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) energetic devices are increasingly demanding higher output capabilities from energetic materials. This study investigates the incorporation of Titanium (Ti) into PVDF-based energetic films to improve their performance. We fabricated five Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF energetic composite films with varying Ti contents by direct ink writing (DIW). The results indicate that the Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF films demonstrate superior performance compared to Al/CuO/PVDF(AT-0). Notably, the 50 wt% Al/50 wt% Ti/CuO/PVDF (AT-50) film achieved optimal performance, exhibiting a 68% increase in combustion rate compared to the AT-0 film. Additionally, it showed a reduction in ignition delay time by 6 ms, an increase in flame temperature of 160.9 K, a 24% rise in maximum pressure, a pressurization rate enhancement of 117%, and an overall increase in heat release of 26.8%. This is attributed to the synergistic effect of the Al/Ti bimetallic fuels, where their close contact creates an alloying reaction that releases a large amount of heat and avoids the detrimental effects of Al sintering. This Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF energetic composite film, characterized by its exceptional synergistic mechanism and high energy output, holds significant promise for integration with MEMS devices, paving the way for innovative applications in micro-ignition, micro-propulsion, and micro-startup technologies. Highlights Ti was added to the PVDF-based energetic films to form the dual-fuel system. The Al/Ti dual-fuel has a synergistic effect to improve output performance. The 50wt%Al/50wt%Ti/CuO/PVDF film can achieve optimal output performance.

Effect of Crystal Phase on the Thermal and Combustion Properties of MnO2/Al Nanothermites

Chen Jialin,An Ming,Dai Mengnan,Li Shutao,Chen Yeqing,Song Rui,Song Jiaxing,Chen Longming,Zhong Xiting,Tian Quanwei

The properties of oxidants significantly affect the thermal and combustion properties of nanothermites, and alpha and beta-MnO 2 nanorods with similar morphological appearances were prepared using the hydrothermal method. Corresponding nanothermites were prepared employing the electrostatic spraying method and their thermal and combustion properties have been compared through TG-DSC and combustion tests. The aluminothermic reaction process was simulated by molecular dynamics, and the results showed that the β-MnO 2 /Al nanothermite first underwent β-MnO 2 thermal decomposition followed immediately by an aluminothermic reaction, whereas the α-MnO 2 /Al nanothermite underwent a direct aluminothermic reaction. In contrast, the α-MnO 2 /Al nanothermite could release more heat. According to thermal analysis, the activation energy of α-MnO 2 /Al nanothermite was 100.15 kJ mol − 1 higher than β-MnO 2 /Al nanothermite, indicating better stability. Combustion experiments showed that the combustion propagation rate of the α-MnO 2 /Al nanothermite was faster than the β-MnO 2 /Al nanothermite. The results have been verified and the reaction process has been exhibited using molecular dynamics to simulate the aluminothermic reaction process. The notable differences in the thermal and combustion properties of nanothermites containing MnO 2 with varying phases can be attributed to the distinct crystal structures of α-MnO 2 and β-MnO 2 . The alternating 1 × 1 and 2 × 2 tunnel structure of α-MnO 2 is more stable, whereas β-MnO 2 undergoes thermal decomposition before the aluminothermic reaction.

In Situ Fabrication of Al@C Nanocomposite Energetic Additives via Pulsed Discharge in Cyclohexane

Rongzhao Jia,Shenli Jia,Jiajian Zhang,Yongpeng Mo,Zongqian Shi

A method for in situ fabrication of Al@C nanocomposite energetic additives through pulsed discharge in liquid cyclohexane has been proposed. The obtained Al@C nanocomposites consist of large aluminum nanoparticles (over 100 nm) enveloped by fullerenes and a carbon matrix with smaller aluminum particles (under 100 nm) embedded within. DSC–TGA curves indicate that the heat release of Al@C is higher than that of micron-sized and nano-sized aluminum particles. Al@C nanocomposites effectively reduce the ignition delay for liquid fuels. The energy efficiency of this method is much higher than that of continuous arc ablation, with a yield of up to 2.5 mg/min. This method allows for the simple, convenient, and safe fabrication of energetic additives, presenting a promising prospect for large-scale industrial production.
