This study explores the preparation of a Cs-doped Ru/ZrO 2 catalyst using a low eutectic system and its application in ammonia synthesis. Additionally, it examines the effect of Cs doping on enhancing the catalyst's resistance to hydrogen poisoning. Compared to the undoped Ru/ZrO 2 catalyst and the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 –B catalyst prepared through the grinding method for promoter incorporation, the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 -A catalyst synthesized using the low eutectic system demonstrated significantly enhanced activity. At 400 °C and 0.1 MPa, the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 -A catalyst achieved an ammonia synthesis activity of 1769 μmol g cat −1 h −1 , which is approximately 35 times higher than that of the undoped Ru/ZrO 2 catalyst. The structure of the catalyst was analyzed using various material characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, and SEM. The results showed that the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 -A catalyst, prepared under identical conditions, exhibited no significant structural differences compared to other catalysts. However, further TPR and TPD analyses revealed that Cs interacts with Ru to some extent, affecting its reduction behavior and enhancing the catalytic reaction rate for ammonia synthesis. Additionally, detailed XPS analysis of all catalysts was conducted, leading to a proposed relationship between the catalytic reaction rate and the oxidation states of the metal components. The study revealed that the presence of Cs significantly inhibits hydrogen poisoning of the catalyst. Furthermore, it demonstrated that the addition of promoters enhances H 2 dissociation by supplying electrons to the active metal Ru, while Cs plays a crucial role in effectively suppressing hydrogen poisoning.

Reasonably designing and optimizing the homogenous surfaces of catalysts with moderate noble metal loadings to enhance their electrolysis of water performance in alkaline environments has always been a challenge. In this work, we proposed a heterostructure induction technique employing Ru nanoparticles, Ni, and NiO to accurately produce a highly distributed three-phase heterostructure Ru@Ni/NiO, which exhibits excellent catalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and overall water splitting reaction under alkaline conditions. The OER overpotentials in 1 M KOH were 250 mV, 320 mA, and 350 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , 50 mA cm −2 , and 100 mA cm −2 current densities, respectively, outperforming RuO 2 . The HER overpotentials were 52 mV, 107 mV, and 142 mV, respectively, superior to Pt/C. In the overall water splitting reaction, the Ru@Ni/NiO system requires only 1.63 V, 1.94 V and 2.08 V to achieve current densities of 10 mA cm −2 , 50 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. Meanwhile, the catalyst exhibited excellent stability at high current density. This study provides a design strategy for the precise construction of interfacial engineering and demonstrates significant potential for large-scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting.

Ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis is a promising strategy for the development of hydrogen energy, and ultrafine metal nanoparticles (NPs) are attractive catalysts owing to their abundant active sites. In this work, porous graphitic carbon nitride (CN) are doped with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and used as supports to evenly confine ultrafine Ru NPs with an adsorption-chemical reduction method. The results show that the different assembly methods and compositions affect the geometric and electronic characteristics of the composites, thus affecting the catalytic behavior in AB hydrolysis. Also, the effects of different Ru loadings and NaOH dosages are researched to improve the hydrolysis efficiency. Specifically, the optimal Ru/CN-rGO catalysts display exciting catalytic performance due to the proper porous structure, N, O co-doping and highly dispersed ultrafine Ru NPs . The corresponding turnover frequency (887.2 min −1 ) in the presence of NaOH (1.00 mol L −1 ) and the apparent activation energy (21.7 kJ mol −1 ) are superior to many previous results. The facile fabrication strategy and robust performance attest to a promising potential for Ru/CN-rGO in the fields of hydrogen energy.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 - RR) offers a promising route to sustainable ammonia synthesis, potentially replacing the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. While often studied in neutral or alkaline media, NO 3 - RR in acidic conditions is particularly relevant due to widespread industrial acidic nitrate wastewater, yet it remains challenging due to corrosion and dominant hydrogen evolution. To address this, we designed a corrosion-resistant Ru/WO 3- x heterostructure that spatially separates proton and nitrate adsorption sites. Here, we show that a reverse hydrogen spillover effect, where the WO 3- x support stores and transports protons to surface Ru active sites, dramatically enhances hydrogenation kinetics and suppresses parasitic hydrogen evolution. This catalyst achieves an ammonia Faradaic efficiency of 94.09% at a high current density of 500 mA cm −2 and a working potential of 0.026 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, we demonstrate a sulfide-nitrate “batterolyzer” with a discharge power density of 43.4 mW cm −2 . This work reveals an effective proton-management strategy for efficient acidic NO 3 - RR, advancing its potential for coupled ammonia synthesis and wastewater treatment.

Transition metal-based intermetallics are promising electrocatalysts for replacing the commercial Pt metal in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, RENi2 and RERu0.25Ni1.75 (RE = Pr, Tb, and Er) were synthesized and their electrocatalytic HER activities were explored. Among undoped compounds, PrNi2 exhibits the best performance and requires an overpotential of 55 mV, while partially replacing Ni with Ru element (PrRu0.25Ni1.75) can greatly reduce the overpotential to 20 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. Such enhancement was recognized that belongs to their extrinsic property, and their intrinsic HER activities were similar after normalizing the electrocatalytic surface area. Further investigation on ScM2 and ScRu0.25M1.75 (M = Co and Ni) suggests that doping Ru element in ScCo2 will significantly enhance antibonding character around the Fermi level (EF) and weaken hydrogen adsorption energy. On the other hand, the antibonding population for ScNi2 and ScRu0.25Ni1.75 is similar at EF, which accounts for their close intrinsic HER activities.

Bimetallic organic frameworks (BMOFs) possess versatile structural and functional features that enable applications in catalysis and biomedicine. Here, we present a protocol to synthesize Ru@PCN@PEI nanoparticles by loading Ru nanoparticles onto PCN-222(Mn) and coating the surface with polyethyleneimine (PEI). We describe steps for precursor preparation, particle size regulation, and surface modification. We detail procedures for morphological characterization by transmission electron microscopy and assessment of catalytic activity using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The development of highly active and durable electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for advancing sustainable hydrogen production through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). In this work, we report the one-pot solvothermal synthesis of Ga-doped Ru nanosheets (RuGa NSs) as a high-performance alkaline HER catalyst, where Ga incorporation is shown to optimize the interfacial water structure to enhance catalytic activity. The optimized RuGa NSs exhibit outstanding alkaline HER performance, requiring a low overpotential of only 18 mV at 10 mA cm–2, coupled with a small Tafel slope of 37.2 mV dec–1. When integrated into an AEMWE device, the RuGa NSs||NiFe-LDH-based AEMWE enables a low cell voltage of 1.74 V to deliver 1.0 A cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH at 60 °C. Moreover, the AEMWE device shows exceptional long-term stability, operating continuously for 200 h at 0.5 A cm–2 with a minimal voltage decay of 5.5%. Operando Raman spectroscopy results demonstrate that Ga doping promotes the dynamic transformation of rigid, hydrogen-bonded water into more mobile free-water molecules. This restructuring creates a favorable local reaction environment by increasing the flexibility of the hydrogen-bond network, thereby facilitating water dissociation and proton transfer.

A novel molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence (MIP-ECL) sensor based on Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -doped silica nanoparticles (Ru@SiO 2 NPs) is developed for highly sensitive detection of fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ). Gold-nanoparticles (AuNPs), Ru@SiO 2 NPs with chitosan (CS) composites and a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) are assembled on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to fabricate an ECL platform step by step. AuNPs could greatly promote the ECL intensity and improve the analytical sensitivity according to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and the electrochemical effect . In this surface-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (SEECL) system, AuNPs work as the LSPR source to improve the ECL intensity and Ru@SiO 2 NPs are used as ECL luminophores. In the phosphate buffer solution (PBS), the evident anodic ECL of Ru@SiO 2 on the above working electrode is observed in the presence of the template molecule fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ), which could act as the coreactant of Ru@SiO 2 NPs due to the amino group of FB 1 . When the template molecules were eluted from the MIP, little coreactant was left, resulting in an apparent decrease of ECL signal. After the MIP-ECL sensor was incubated in FB 1 solution, the template molecules rebound to the MIP surface , leading to the enhancement of ECL signal again. On the basis of these results, a facile MIP-ECL sensor has been successfully fabricated, which exhibited a linear range from 0.001 to 100 ng mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.35 pg mL −1 for FB 1 . Moreover, the proposed MIP-ECL sensor displayed an excellent application in real samples.

Noble metal electrocatalysts (e.g., Pt, Ru, etc.) suffer from sluggish kinetics of water dissociation for the electrochemical reduction of water to molecular hydrogen in alkaline and neutral pH environments. Herein, we found that an integration of Ru nanoparticles (NPs) on oxygen-deficient WO 3-x manifested a 24.0-fold increase in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity compared with commercial Ru/C electrocatalyst in neutral electrolyte. Oxygen-deficient WO 3-x is shown to possess large capacity for storing protons, which could be transferred to the Ru NPs under cathodic potential. This significantly increases the hydrogen coverage on the surface of Ru NPs in HER and thus changes the rate-determining step of HER on Ru from water dissociation to hydrogen recombination.

Hydrogenation of CO 2 into CH 4 is an effective strategy for dealing with CO 2 -relevant environmental problems. Since the CO 2 methanation reaction involves multiple electron transfers and various C1 intermediates, improving the reaction rate at each step is critical to accelerating the entire reaction. Here, we report a dual-active-site tandem catalyst (Ru 1 Ni/CeO 2 ) composed of Ru single atoms (Ru 1 ) and Ni nanoparticles , which can effectively convert CO 2 to CH 4 , showing ∼90% CO 2 conversion and ∼99% CH 4 selectivity at 325 °C, much higher than those of the Ru 1 /CeO 2 and Ni/CeO 2 catalysts. Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that Ru 1 is extremely active for converting CO 2 to CO, while the Ni site is highly efficient for the subsequent sequential CO to CH 4 reaction step. The coexistence of the Ru 1 and Ni sites significantly boosts the overall reaction. This work offers a promising strategy for the rational design of efficient multisite tandem catalysts.

Ru(bpy)3Cl2/TPrA is a prominent and widely used ECL system in analytical science. However, the co-reactant TPrA restricts the variety of applications because of its toxicity, volatility, and high cost. Here, we use arginine (Arg) as an alternative co-reactant for Ru(bpy)32+ by taking advantage of its low cost, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility. The mechanism of the Ru(bpy)32+/Arg system is that the deprotonated Arg can react with Ru(bpy)32+ to release emission. The similarity between the Ru(bpy)32+/Arg, Ru(bpy)32+/TPrA, and Ru(bpy)32+/DBAE systems demonstrates that Arg can be used as an alternative co-reactant for Ru(bpy)32+ ECL. As a proof of concept, we achieve an excellent performance for acetaminophen (Ace) detection based on the specificity of Arg and Ace, with excellent linearity, low detection limits, and good recoveries. This work is promising to expand the scope of the Ru(bpy)32+/Arg system and move forward their applications in bioassays.

Bimetallic Pd-Ru/ hydroxyapatite (HAP) catalysts were developed together with Zirconium phosphate (ZrP) to prepare aviation fuel range hydrocarbons by one-pot HDO from lignocellulose-derived C15 oxygenate. The effects of the catalyst composition , reaction time, initial H 2 pressure and reaction temperature on the HDO were explored. 84.24% C8-C15 alkanes could be obtained by Pd 0.6 -Ru 1.8 /HAP at 150 °C, 4 MPa H 2 . The HDO pathway and the stability of the catalyst were also investigated. To explore the synergy of bimetals and the efficiency of the catalysts, a series of characterizations were conducted. The results verified that the bimetallic catalyst had a better adsorption capacity for the substrate, and the ruthenium external electron density raised due to the introduction of palladium , thereby enhancing the hydrodeoxygenation activity of the catalyst.
