Sodium alginate-based composite microspheres for controlled release of pesticides and reduction of adverse effects of copper in agricultural soils

Yu Du,Qizhen Zhang,Manli Yu,Bin Jiao,Fuliang Chen,Mingming Yin

Excessive copper (Cu) concentrations pose significant health risks to both plants and humans. In this study, sodium alginate (SA)-gelatin (GEL)-polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)- embedded dinotefuran (DIN) microspheres were prepared using spray-drying technology . The loading content and encapsulation efficiency of optimal microspheres determined by physical modifications were 19.77% and 99.32%, respectively. In addition, the microspheres showed variable stimuli-responsive controlled release capacities in different temperatures and types of soil, as well as showed better control efficiency of larvae of Protaetia brevitarsis at pesticide application in the early stage, with the potential ability to control pest outbreaks at high temperatures. In addition, blank microspheres improved the growth and physiological activity of cucumber seedlings, reduced copper content in leaves, increased soil nutrient content, and prevented soil acidification . Further, the use of blank microspheres increased the relative abundance of soil beneficial functional bacteria communities, which mediate heavy metal (HM) immobilization/tolerance and promote plant growth. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Spearman correlation analysis showed that these beneficial functional bacteria were mainly positively correlated with soil EC, A-N, and N–N. In summary, this study showed that the technique of combining physically modified carrier materials with pesticides has the potential to reduce Cu contamination in the surrounding agricultural soil during pesticide application, thereby reducing Cu uptake by crops.

Surface modification of pyrophyllite for optimizing properties of castor oil-based polyurethane composite and its application in controlled-release fertilizer

Shiping Wang,Xiang Li,Kun Ren,Rui Huang,Ganchang Lei,Lijuan Shen,Yingying Zhan,Lilong Jiang

The high cost and difficulty in sustainability have hindered the wide application of the general synthetic resins in the controlled-release fertilizers (CRF). Here, the degradable castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) was filled by the natural pyrophyllite (PY) powders, which were pre-modified with few amount (≤0.5 %) of NDZ-201 coupling agent though a simple and economic mechanochemical method. Furthermore, the composite materials of PU and the modified PY (MPY/PU) with enhanced comprehensive properties were prepared and applied in CRF. Moreover, the release behaviors of the coated fertilizers were investigated while tuning the addition amount of modifier or the filling amount of MPY, and it was confirmed that the release performance was highly depended on the hydrophobic and mechanical properties of the composite coating. As a result, the best optimized MPY/PU coating exhibited significantly superior performance to the pure PU materials, and the duration of 80 % nitrogen release was more than 40 days. This confirms that the MPY/PU composite is a promising coating material for the CRF granules.

Site-Specific Controlled-Release Imidazolate Framework-8 for Dazomet Smart Delivery to Improve the Effective Utilization Rate and Reduce Biotoxicity

Lirui Ren,Jianing Zhao,Wenjing Li,Qingjie Li,Daqi Zhang,Wensheng Fang,Dongdong Yan,Yuan Li,Qiuxia Wang,Xi Jin,Aocheng Cao

An accurate controlled-release strategy of pesticides is considered desirable in sustainable agriculture. A site-specific nanorelease system of dazomet (DZ) was proposed by employing the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 composite (DZ@ZIF-8) by a one-pot method. The synthetic parameters of DZ@ZIF-8 were optimized, and the loading content of DZ was maximized. ZIF-8 endowed DZ with a pH-sensitive behavior. The collapse of the DZ@ZIF-8 structure and the site-specific release of DZ were triggered by acidic substances produced by Botrytis cinerea. In vitro and pot experiments showed that the fungicidal activity of DZ@ZIF-8 was about 36.3 and 42.7% higher than that of DZ, respectively. DZ is conventionally used before a crop is planted because of its volatility and toxicity. However, DZ@ZIF-8 could avoid phytotoxicity of DZ to plants, which made the application of DZ possible during plant growth. Moreover, the acute toxicity to zebrafish changed from high to moderate levels. This study highlights a potential strategy that improves DZ effective utilization and reduces side effects.

Nanogels loading 5-Fluorouracil in situ through thiol-ene click reaction and photopolymerization at 532 nm for its controlled release

Yuanyuan Peng,Xinjing Du,Daolian Zhu,Yu Nie,Shengbin Shi,Jinfeng Xing

Drug-loaded nanogels have attracted extensive research interest and shown great potential for many biomedical applications. A facile preparation method for drug-loaded nanogels is desirable to be developed. In this study, a range of nanogels were prepared by combining thiol-ene click reaction and photopolymerization at 532 nm for in situ loading 5-Fluorouracil (NG-S). The drug loading amount was improved by introducing mercaptosuccinic acid (MCA) to trigger thiol-ene click reaction. The drug loading capacity and swelling ratio characteristics of NG-S could be tuned by changing the proportion of PEGDA/MCA and the initial dose of drug. Especially, the drug release performance of the NG-S showed that 5-Fluorouracil presented the relatively excellent behavior of controlled release with a sustained release time up to 20 h in PBS (pH 7.4) at 37 °C. The fitting results of NG-S based on R 2 were consistent with the First order, Weibull and Biexponential kinetic models .

Cold-set oat protein isolate--gellan gum binary gels with various microstructures: Fabrication, characterization, formation mechanism, and controlled release properties

Chen Yang,Xiao Wang,Haiyue Hu,Yongli Feng,Huihuang Tang,Weiwei Zhang,Jianming Wang

Cold-set oat protein isolate (OPI) and gellan gum (GG) binary gels with various microstructures was fabricated with different amounts glucono-δ-lactone (GDL) as a carrier to deliver bioactive compounds . OPI and GG formed gel-like mixture at pH 8 mainly via hydrophobic interactions with a binding constant ( K a) of 3.85 × 10 4  M −1 , while the mixture showed highest storage modulus (G′) with 0.1% GG (w/w, based on the dry weight of protein). Novel binary gels fabricated with 7% OPI (w/v) and 0.1% GG (w/w) (OGG) were then developed through addition of various amounts of GDL. For the gels prepared with 1.5% and 4.0% GDL (w/w, based on the dry weight of protein, pH 7.1 and 6.3, respectively), heterogeneous network formed by co-aggregated OPI and GG with a small amount of small GG particles dispersed within large aqueous pores were fabricated mainly through hydrophobic interactions. For OGG-3 (9.0% GDL, w/w) and OGG-4 (20.0% GDL, w/w), the final pH was 5.1 and 4.1 that around or lower than OPI's isoelectric point, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attractive forces were developed between two polymers since OPI contained neat or positive charges, resulting in a compact coupled OPI-GG network structure. Heterogeneous network with small GG particles dispersed in pores allowed OGG-2 (4.0% GDL, w/w) had comparable good gel hardness to the gel formed with 9.0% GDL (w/w, OGG-3) with coupled microstructure, whereas OGG-3 showed a better ability to restrict the swelling induced release of riboflavin in SGF, and allowed sustainable release of riboflavin in SIF. Therefore, OPI-GG binary gels with various microstructures prepared by simple acidification method at ambient temperature have great potential to be used as delivery systems for heat-sensitive bioactive compounds in food and non-food applications.

Auricularia auricula biochar supported γ-FeOOH nanoarrays for electrostatic self-assembly and pH-responsive controlled release of herbicide and fertilizer

Yifan Wang,Zhengjie Peng,Youqing Yang,Zhonnan Li,Yujiao Wen,Meng Liu,Shikai Li,Lezhu Su,Zhi Zhou,Yongfa Zhu,Nan Zhou

The abuse of agrochemicals has caused serious environmental pollution, raising urgently requirement for sensitive controlled release systems. Biochar supported γ-FeOOH nanoarrays (γ-FeOOH@BC) were synthesized in situ through a two-step pyrolyzation-oxidation procedure. The decoration of γ-FeOOH nanoarray structure significantly enhanced the surface positive charge of the composite (pH zpc increased from 2.7 to 7.8), due to which active substances could be electrostatically self-assembled on γ-FeOOH@BC to realize accurate release by changing the environmental pH. The assembled amounts of QNC and PO 4 3- could reach a value of 94 mg·g −1 and 92 mg·g −1 respectively, and the encapsulation efficiency as well as the release concentration were closely related to the pKa of the substance. 45% (QNC) and 63% (PO 4 3- ) could be released at pH = 7.8 and finally both reached to 88% at pH = 11. After 5 rounds of the sensitivity test, QNC/ PO 4 3- could be well assembled or released by pH adjustment, and the encapsulation efficiency remained above 75%. Meanwhile, the assembly structures could also be self-formed in real soil containing QNC/PO 4 3- and had selective herbicidal activity on barnyard grass plants. This work not only provides a feasible material but also a novel method for self-assembly and controlled release of agricultural chemicals.

Stimulus-Detonated Biomimetic “Nanobomb” with Controlled Release of HSP90 Inhibitor to Disrupt Mitochondrial Function for Synergistic Gas and Photothermal Therapy

Geng Yang,Ting Song,Hanxi Zhang,Mengyue Li,Xiaodan Wei,Wanyi Zhou,Chunhui Wu,Yiyao Liu,Hong Yang

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is considered a promising treatment for tumors; however, its efficacy is restricted by heat shock proteins (HSPs). Herein, a stimuli-responsive theranostic nanoplatform (M/D@P/E-P) is designed for synergistic gas therapy and PTT. This nanoplatform is fabricated by a load of manganese carbonyl (MnCO, CO donor) in dendritic mesoporous silicon (DMS), followed by the coating with polydopamine (PDA) and loading of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG, HSP90 inhibitor). Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the photothermal effect of PDA can kill tumor cells and allow for the controlled drug release of MnCO and EGCG. Moreover, the acidity and H 2 O 2 -rich tumor microenvironment enable the decomposition of the released MnCO, accompanied by the production of CO. CO-initiated gas therapy can realize to disrupt the mitochondrial function, which will accelerate cell apoptosis and down-regulate HSP90 expression by decreasing intracellular ATP. The combination of EGCG and MnCO can significantly minimize the thermo-resistance of tumors and improve PTT sensitivity. In addition, the released Mn 2+ enables T 1 -weighted magnetic imaging of tumors. The therapeutic efficacy of the nanoplatform is methodically appraised and validated both in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, this study affords a prime paradigm for applying this strategy for enhanced PTT via mitochondrial dysfunction.

Cu-BTA complexes coated layered double hydroxide for controlled release of corrosion inhibitors in dual self-healing waterborne epoxy coatings

Peng Xie,Yi He,Fei Zhong,Chen Zhang,Chunlin Chen,Hongjie Li,Yang Liu,Yang Bai,Jingyu Chen

Smart self-healing coatings with the active healing ability are the current research hotspot in the field of metal corrosion protection. In this work, we designed a novel corrosion protection system of waterborne epoxy. Under alkaline condition, Cu-BTA complexes were deposited on the surface of MoO 4 2− intercalated Mg-Al Layered double hydroxide (MIH) by electrostatic assembly as pH-sensitive gatekeepers. When MIH@Cu-BTA(MIHC) nanosheets were filled into the coatings, the layered structures of Layered double hydroxide(LDH) improved the barrier properties of the coatings to prevent corrosive ions penetration. Meanwhile, the excellent ion exchanges ability of LDH could be used to reduce the concentration of Cl- ions, both of MoO 4 2− ions and BTA could release quickly from MIHC in an acidic environment to achieve the self-healing effect. All of them cooperated to synergistically improve the anti-corrosion performance of the coating. The long-term protective performances and self-healing properties of WECs which loaded nano-containers were evaluated by salt spray test and electrochemical experiment. The impedance results indicate that the addition of MIHC(0.5 wt.%) increases the impedance of pure epoxy coating from 1.579 × 10 8 to 1.041 × 10 9 Ω cm 2 .

Preparation and characterization of a chiral molecularly imprinted polymer with a novel functional monomer for controlled release of S-sulpiride

Liping Wang,Xuhui She,Zhi Chen,Sisi Quan,Yingtao Liu,Xiaoman Mai,Tiefeng Yuan,Huajun Fan

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with chiral recognition affinity to S-sulpiride (S-SUL) enantiomer was prepared by using newly synthesized N-acryloyl-tryptophan (ATrp) as function monomer , S-SUL as the template molecule, and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross linker. Under the optimized synthesis conditions, the MIP was synthesized by bulk polymerization according to the molar ratio of 1:4 of S-SUL to ATrp, and structurally characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and laser particle analysis. The results illustrated that the MIP offered uniform, loose and porous structure. The adsorption performance of the MIP was evaluated by the isotherm and kinetic models, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity, selectivity factor and enantioselectivity coefficient to S-SUL were respectively 226.2389 µmol/g, 2.34 and 11.66. Based on the chiral recognition specificity, the drug release experiments demonstrated that the MIP as controlled and sustained release carrier could inhibit the release rate of S-enantiomer compared to the tablet without the MIP, exhibiting the potential of the MIP synthesized in chiral drug delivery.

Ca(OH)2 induced a controlled-release catalytic system for the efficient conversion of high-concentration glucose to lactic acid

Zijing Wang,Changjuan Mo,Sixuan Xu,Shanshuai Chen,Tiansheng Deng,Wanbin Zhu,Hongliang Wang

The catalytic conversion of carbohydrate to platform chemicals, e.g. lactic acid (LA), is the key to unlock the potential of biomass. In this study, we report that the combination of Ba(OH) 2 and Ca(OH) 2 can efficiently catalyse high-concentration (> 0.5 M) of glucose to relatively high yield of LA (> 40 %) under mild conditions (60 °C). Both glucose conversion and LA yield were sensitive to the pH of the catalytic system. A high loading of Ba(OH) 2 led to a high initial pH of the reaction solution, resulting in serious side reactions. While, a low loading of Ba(OH) 2 led to a quike decrease of OH − and Ba 2+ both of which were continuously consumpted by the formed LA. The combination of Ca(OH) 2 with Ba(OH) 2 could significantly improve LA yield, since Ca(OH) 2 , with limited solubility, could act as a controlled-release catalyst for the real-time supply of OH − and Ca 2+ . OH − was indispensable for glucose isomerization to fructose as well as for fructose retro-aldol reaction to C 3 intermediates. Ca 2+ could combine with LA to form stable calcium lactate, liberating Ba 2+ to catalyse the conversion of C 3 intermediates to LA. Under the preliminary optimized reaction conditions, the yield of LA could be reached to 42.55 % and 38.32 % from 0.5 M and 1 M glucose, respectively. This catalytic system has advantages of mild reaction condition, short reaction time, and capable of conversion of high-concentration substrates, enabling it with a great potential for practical applications.

Preparation of β-lactoglobulin/gum arabic complex nanoparticles for encapsulation and controlled release of EGCG in simulated gastrointestinal digestion model

Jian Gao,Yuezhong Mao,Chuyue Xiang,Mengna Cao,Gerui Ren,Kuiwu Wang,Xiangjuan Ma,Di Wu,Hujun Xie

In this work, the β-lactoglobulin/gum arabic (β-Lg-GA) complexes were prepared to encapsulate epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), forming β-Lg-GA-EGCG complex nanoparticles with an average particle size of 133 nm. The β-Lg-GA complexes exhibited excellent encapsulation efficiency (84.5%), and the antioxidant performance of EGCG in vitro was improved after encapsulation. It was recorded that 86% of EGCG could be released in simulated intestinal fluid after 3 h of digestion, much faster than that in simulated gastric fluid, indicating that the β-Lg-GA complexes were effective in enhancing EGCG stability, which was confirmed using SDS-PAGE and SEM. Further spectrum results demonstrated that various intramolecular interactions including electrostatic, hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions contribute to the formation of β-Lg-GA-EGCG complex nanoparticles. Also, XRD   experiments indicated that EGCG was successfully encapsulated by β-Lg-GA complexes. Therefore, the β-Lg-GA complexes hold great potentials in the protective delivery of sensitive bioactives.

Localized Controlled Release of Bilirubin from β-Cyclodextrin-Conjugated ε-Polylysine To Attenuate Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Transplanted Islets

Qing Yao,Zhi-Wei Huang,Yuan-Yuan Zhai,Meng Yue,Lan-Zi Luo,Peng-Peng Xue,Yong-Hui Han,He-Lin Xu,Longfa Kou,Ying-Zheng Zhao

Islet transplantation has been considered the most promising therapeutic option with the potential to restore the physiological regulation of blood glucose concentrations in type 1 diabetes treatment. However, islets suffer from oxidative stress and nonspecific inflammation in the early stage of transplantation, which attributed to the leading cause of islet graft failure. Our previous study reported that bilirubin exerted antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects on hypothermic preserved islets, which inspire us to utilize bilirubin to address the survival issue of grafted islets. However, the application of bilirubin for islet transplantation is limited by its poor solubility and fast clearance. In this study, we designed a supramolecular carrier (PLCD) that could improve the solubility of bilirubin and slowly release bilirubin to protect islets after cotransplantation. PLCD was synthesized by conjugating activated β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to the side chain of ε-polylysine (PLL) and acted as a carrier to load bilirubin via host–guest interactions. The constructed bilirubin supramolecular system (PLCD-BR) significantly improved the solubility and prolonged the action time of bilirubin. In vitro results confirmed that PLCD-BR coculture substantially enhanced the resistance of islets to excessive oxidative stress and proinflammatory stimulation and maximumly maintained the islet function. In vivo, PLCD could prolong drug duration at the transplant site, and the localized released bilirubin could protect the islets from oxidative stress and suppress the production of inflammatory cytokines. Crucially, islet transplantation with PLCD-BR significantly extended the stable blood glucose time of diabetic mice and produced a faster glucose clearance compared to those cotransplanted with free bilirubin. Additionally, immunohistochemical analysis showed that PLCD-BR had superior antioxidative and anti-inflammatory abilities and beneficial effects on angiogenesis. These findings demonstrate that the PLCD-BR has great potentials to support successful islet transplantation.
