NIR-II light activated photodynamic therapy with protein-capped gold nanoclusters

Chen Qian,Chen Jiawen,Yang Zhijuan,Zhang Lin,Dong Ziliang,Liu Zhuang

The use of near-infrared (NIR) light for photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising strategy to circumvent the limitations of current PDT, in which visible light with limited tissue penetration depth is usually used. In the present study, alkyl thiolated gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were co-modified with human serum albumin (HSA) and catalase (CAT), and then employed as a multifunctional, optical, theranostic nano-agent. In the AuNC@HSA/CAT system, the AuNCs were able to produce singlet oxygen under excitation by a 1,064-nm laser, which locates in the second NIR window (NIR-II), and featured much lower tissue absorption and scattering, enabling NIR-II-triggered PDT. The HSA coating greatly improved the physiological stability of the nanoparticles, which showed efficient tumor retention after intravenous injection, as revealed by detecting the AuNC fluorescence. Moreover, the presence of CAT in the nanoparticles triggered decomposition of tumor endogenous H 2 O 2 to generate oxygen, thereby enhancing the efficacy of PDT by relieving tumor hypoxia. Compared with conventional PDT using visible light, NIR-II-triggered PDT exhibits remarkably increased tissue penetration. Thus, we developed a new type of photosensitizing nano-agent that simultaneously enables in vivo fluorescence imaging, tumor hypoxia relief, and NIR-II light-induced in vivo PDT in the treatment of cancer.

Hierarchical magnetic BiFeO3 microcages: Controlling synthesis and visible-light photocatalytic activity

Kuan Pang,Qiang Zhang,Yan Xu

Hierarchical BiFeO 3 microcages were prepared from a Bi 3+ -modified Fe-MOF using a feasible and controllable strategy, which involved the doping of Bi 3+ into Fe-MOF and subsequent annealing of the precursors. The as-formed BiFeO 3 microcages calcined at 600 °C were hierarchically composed of numerous aggregated nanoflakes. The characteristics of the ordered stacked structure and high purity of the BiFeO 3 architecture are attributable to the slow self-sacrificing template effect. The obtained BiFeO 3 microcages exhibited remarkable visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the use in decomposing methylene blue (MB) dye molecules as well as excellent reusability due to their superior magnetic separability. Photocatalytic mechanism studies demonstrated the dominant roles of O 2 •- and • OH intermediate species involved in MB degradation. The presented surface modification and self-sacrifice templating strategy provide possibilities for precise design and control of other novel semiconductors with intriguing morphologies, compositions, and tunable functions.

Production of SnS2 Nanostructure as Improved Light-Assisted Electrochemical Water Splitting

Haizeng Song,Han Wu,Yuan Gao,Ka Wang,Xin Su,Shancheng Yan,Yi Shi

Tin disulfide (SnS2) has gained a lot of interest in the field of converting solar energy into chemical fuels in light-assisted electrochemical water splitting due to its visible-light band gap and high electronic mobility. However, further decreasing the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs and increasing the density of active states at the valence band edge of the photoelectrodes were a critical problem. Here, we were successful in fabricating the super-thin SnS2nanostructure by a hydrothermal and solution etching method. The super-thin SnS2nanostructure as a photo-electrocatalytic material exhibited low overpotential of 0.25 V at the current density of −10 mA·cm−2and the potential remained basically unchanged after 1000 cycles in an H2SO4electrolyte solution, which was better than that of the SnS2nanosheet and SnS/SnS2heterojunction nanosheet. These results show the potential application of super-thin SnS2nanostructure in electrochemical/photo-electrocatalytic field. Keywords:layered semiconductor;solution etching;SnS2nanostructure;light-Assisted electrochemical water splitting

White-light-emitting hybrid film from fluorescent hyperbranched poly(amido amine)

Wen Yang,Xiaomin Wang,Shengnan Wang,Wentao Hao

The flexible, strong, and tough white-light-emitting (WLE) hybrid films are highly demanded in large-scale displays, including TV sets, monitors, and electronic interactive devices. In this work, a kind of WLE hybrid film was fabricated from hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (HPAMAM) and nanoclay with the incorporation of riboflavin (VB 2 ) and rhodamine B (RhB). The fluorescence emission of HPAMAM was partially absorbed and effectively transferred into green and red color, which combined into a bright white light with the residue blue fluorescence. Due to the alignment of nanoclay inside the HPAMAM matrix, in addition to the strong interaction among the HPAMAM molecules and that between HPAMAM and nanoclay, this hybrid film shows to be strong and tough. The mechanical strength is about 20 MPa and the elongation is about 30%. It is convinced that this hybrid film is promising in flexible large-scale displays. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. AgI/β-Ag2MoO4 heterojunctions with enhanced visible-light-driven catalytic activity

Junlei Zhang,Zhen Ma

Visible-light-driven photocatalysis for removing industrial dyes and antibiotics in waste water has attracted much interest. New catalysts with enhanced photocatalytic performance have been actively sought. Herein, via a simple sequential precipitation method, AgI nanoparticles were anchored onto micron-sized β-Ag 2 MoO 4 particles to form AgI/β-Ag 2 MoO 4 p–n heterojunctions. These heterojunctions exhibited remarkably upgraded activities in the visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B, methyl orange, and tetracycline hydrochloride compared with pristine AgI and β-Ag 2 MoO 4 . The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the tight heterojunction structure and well matched energy band that may facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radical anions (•O 2 − ) were found to be the main active species. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed.

Can visible light impact litter decomposition under pollution of ZnO nanoparticles?

Jingjing Du,Yuyan Zhang,Lina Liu,Mingxiang Qv,Yanna Lv,Yifei Yin,Yinfei Zhou,Minghui Cui,Yanfeng Zhu,Hongzhong Zhang

ZnO nanoparticles is one of the most used materials in a wide range including antibacterial coating, electronic device, and personal care products. With the development of nanotechnology, ecotoxicology of ZnO nanoparticles has been received increasing attention. To assess the phototoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles in aquatic ecosystem , microcosm experiments were conducted on Populus nigra L. leaf litter decomposition under combined effect of ZnO nanoparticles and visible light radiation . Litter decomposition rate, pH value, extracellular enzyme activity , as well as the relative contributions of fungal community to litter decomposition were studied. Results showed that long-term exposure to ZnO nanoparticles and visible light led to a significant decrease in litter decomposition rate (0.26 m −1 vs 0.45 m -1 ), and visible light would increase the inhibitory effect (0.24 m -1 ), which caused significant decrease in pH value of litter cultures, fungal sporulation rate, as well as most extracellular enzyme activities. The phototoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles also showed impacts on fungal community composition, especially on the genus of Varicosporium , whose abundance was significantly and positively related to decomposition rate. In conclusion, our study provides the evidence for negatively effects of ZnO NPs photocatalysis on ecological process of litter decomposition and highlights the contribution of visible light radiation to nanoparticles toxicity in freshwater ecosystems .

Biocompatible Perovskite Nanocrystals with Enhanced Stability for White Light-Emitting Diodes

Rui Zhang,Ao Yan,Haiyun Liu,Zehua Lv,Mengqing Hong,Zhenxing Qin,Weijie Ren,Zhaoyi Jiang,Mingkai Li,Johnny C. Ho,Pengfei Guo

Recently emerged lead halide perovskite CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) nanocrystals (PNCs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent optical properties. However, the poor water stability, unsatisfactory luminescence efficiency, disappointing lead leakage, and toxicity have restricted their practical applications in photoelectronics and biomedical fields. Herein, a controllable encapsulated strategy is investigated to realize CsPbX3 PNCs/PVP @PMMA composites with superior luminescence properties and excellent biocompatibility. Additionally, the synthesized CsPbBr3 and CsPbBr0.6I2.4 PNCs/PVP@PMMA structures exhibit green and red emissions with a maximal photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of about 70.24% and 98.26%, respectively. These CsPbX3 PNCs/PVP@PMMA structures show high emission efficiency, excellent stability after water storage for 18 months, and low cytotoxicity at the PNC concentration at 500 μg mL–1. Moreover, white light-emitting diode (WLED) devices based on mixtures of CsPbBr3 and CsPbBr0.6I2.4 PNCs/PVP@PMMA perovskite structures are investigated, which exhibit excellent warm-white light emissions at room temperature. A flexible manipulation method is used to fabricate the white light emitters based on these perovskite composites, providing a fantastic platform for fabricating solid-state white light sources and full-color displays.

A portable optical waveguide resonance light-scattering scanner for microarray detection

Xuefeng Xing,Wanyao Liu,Tao Li,Shu Xing,Xueqi Fu,Dongyang Wu,Dianjun Liu,Zhenxin Wang

In the present work, a portable and low-cost planar waveguide based resonance light scattering (RLS) scanner (termed as: PW-RLS scanner) has been developed for microarray detection. The PW-RLS scanner employs a 2 × 4 white light emitting diode array (WLEDA) as the excitation light source, a folded optical path with a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) as the signal/image acquisition device and stepper motors with gear drives as the mechanical drive system. The biological binding/recognizing events on the microarray can be detected with an evanescent waveguide-directed illumination and light-scattering label (e.g., nanoparticles) while the microarray slide acts as an evanescent waveguide substrate. The performance of the as-developed PW-RLS scanner has been evaluated by analyzing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk genes. Highly selective and sensitive (less than 1% allele frequency at the attomole-level) T2DM risk gene detection is achieved using single-stranded DNA functionalized gold nanoparticles (ssDNA-GNPs) as detection probes. Additionally, the successful simultaneous analysis of 15 T2DM patient genotypes suggests that the device has great potential for the realization of a personalized diagnostic test for a given disease or patient follow-up.

Full-Color Inorganic Carbon Dot Phosphors for White-Light-Emitting Diodes

Zhen Tian,Xutao Zhang,Di Li,Ding Zhou,Pengtao Jing,Dezhen Shen,Songnan Qu,Radek Zboril,Andrey L. Rogach

Light-emitting carbon dots (CDots) are widely investigated due to their distinct merits. However, it is still a challenge to modulate their bandgap emissions and conquer their aggregation-induced luminescence quenching to achieve full-color highly emissive CDot-based phosphors. Herein, this study proposes an approach toward realization of full-color emissive CDots from two common precursors, citric acid and urea, through employing three different solvents (water, glycerol, and dimethylformamide) and their combinations in a solvothermal synthesis. Employing sodium silicate solution, this study further demonstrates the microwave-assisted method allowing to incorporate CDots into a silica network, which effectively prevents aggregation of CDots and results in strongly luminescent full-color inorganic CDot phosphors with photoluminescence quantum yields of 30–40%. Through deposition of the red- and green-emitting CDot phosphors on blue-emitting InGaN chips, white-light-emitting diodes are fabricated with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage of (0.34, 0.31) and the color rendering index of 82.4, indicating their promising application for solid-state lighting.

Microwave synthesis of nanoparticulate EuFeO3 and its visible light photocatalytic activity

Peisong Tang,Haifeng Chen,Chunyan Lv,Kunyan Wang,Yongya Wang

Using Eu(NO3)3·6H2O and Fe(NO3)3·9H2O as raw material, the nanoparticulate EuFeO3 was directly synthesized by a one-step microwave route without additional high temperature calcination process. The prepared sample was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results show that the EuFeO3 is single phase perovskite, and its morphology is nanoparticle with an average diameter of about 60–80 nm. The prepared nanoparticle has an optical band gap of 2.3 eV, and exhibits strong visible-light absorption. The photocatalytic activity of nanoparticulate EuFeO3 was investigated in experimental simulation wastewater containing 10 mg/L methyl orange (MO). The photocatalytic experiment indicates that the prepared nanoparticulate EuFeO3 was highly visible-light activities for the degradation of MO. It is suggested that the narrow band gap and the strong visible-light absorption are responsible for the high visible-light photocatalytic activity of the prepared EuFeO3.

Dendritic α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanocomposites with improved visible light photocatalytic activity

Xin Li,Huiming Lin,Xiang Chen,Hao Niu,Jiuyu Liu,Ting Zhang,Fengyu Qu

The design and synthesis of unique novel heterostructures for high-performance photocatalytic activity has exerted a tremendous fascination and has recently attracted intensive attention. In this work, a branch-like α-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterostructure has been synthesized controllably through an electrospinning method combined with a hydrothermal approach. The backbone of the heterostructure is composed of a 3D porous TiO2 nanofiber (∼70 nm in diameter) network with plenty of α-Fe2O3 nanorods (100–200 nm in length) deposited on them. The novel branch-like nanocomposites have an abundantly porous structure as well as large surface areas (up to 42.8 m2 g−1). In addition, their visible light photodegradation behaviour towards organic dyes, including Congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB), eosin red (ER) and methyl orange (MO), was investigated. Their excellent photocatalytic performances are attributed to their large surfaces, improved visible light absorption and high separation efficiency of the photogenerated electrons/holes. Furthermore, the degradation process was further studied by varying the amount of α-Fe2O3 deposited. The sample α-Fe2O3/TiO2-3 possessed the best performance to efficiently decolor CR solution even at a high concentration of 50 mg L−1 (160 min, 94 mg g−1), ascribed to the high adsorption capacity derived from the large surface, strong electrostatic interaction and structural match between α-Fe2O3/TiO2-3 and CR. These α-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterostructures exhibit great potential for decontamination of organic pollutants in waste water under visible light.

Synthesis of C@Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

Yuying Sun,Juan Wu,Tianjin Ma,Pengchao Wang,Chunyue Cui,Dong Ma

Carbon–coated Bi 2 MoO 6 (C@BM) composites have been successfully synthesized via two–step hydrothermal method. The morphology, structure and photocatalytic performance of the composites in the degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) are characterized. The results show that the C@BM composites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic performance in the degradation of Rh B with maximum degradation rates of 90% (210   min) under visible light irradiation. 1.0%C@BM sample shows the highest photocatalytic activity, and the improved photocatalytic performance is mainly ascribed to the formation of Mo O C and Bi O C bonds. The bonds could promote electron transfer from Bi 2 MoO 6 to carbon layer and inhibit the recombination of electron–hole pairs with the presence of carbon layer in the composites. Moreover, the carbon layer on Bi 2 MoO 6 could enhance the absorption in the visible light region. In the photocatalytic degradation process, O 2 − and holes are the predominant active species for the decomposition of Rh B.
