Construction of electrochemical sensor of Cu2O-CuO-W3O-W2C composite material for rapid and sensitive detection of vanillic acid

Na Li,Shixu Chen,Cong Zhang,Haiyan Zhao,Min Cui,Bao Sun

Vanillic acid is a phenolic compound which has antioxidant properties and plays an essential role in the prevention of several degenerative diseases, including cancer and atherosclerosis. This work reports the development and application of a electrochemical sensor for vanillic acid detection by a composite material (Cu 2 O-CuO-W 3 O-W 2 C) using polyoxometal-based metal–organic frameworks (POMOFs) as precursor through thermal decomposition. The synthesized Cu 2 O-CuO-W 3 O-W 2 C have high electrical conductivity and excellent electrocatalytic performance. The electrochemical sensor displays a linear response between the current density and concentration of vanillic acid (50–1100 μM) with a lowest detection limit of 1.439 μM under optimal conditions. The sensor was also demonstrated for the determination of vanillic acid in different real samples (fruit juice and fruit peel) and satisfactory results were obtained.

Hollow Cu2O microspheres with two active {111} and {110} facets for highly selective adsorption and photodegradation of anionic dye

Dai-Song Chen,Wen-Bei Yu,Zhao Deng,Jing Liu,Jun Jin,Yu Li,Min Wu,Li-Hua Chen,Bao-Lian Su

Hollow Cu2O microspheres (0.7 to 4 μm in diameter) with two active {111} and {110} facets have been prepared in water/ethylene glycol (H2O/EG) solution via a fast hydrothermal route in only 1 h. Due to the dangling “Cu” atoms in the highly active {111} and {110} facets, the microspheres demonstrate preferential selective adsorption and photodegradation for negatively charged methyl orange (MO), comparing to cationic rhodamine B (RhB) and neutral phenol. The 0.7 μm hollow Cu2O microspheres show the best adsorption capacity and photodegradation performance for MO removal: 49% MO can be adsorbed in 60 min and 99.8% MO can be fully removed under visible light illumination in 80 min, owing to the two active {110} and {111} facets and hollow structure. To exactly evaluate the photocatalytic efficiency, a new methodology is proposed by deducting the adsorption effect. The results show that in spite of 99.2% MO is removed from the solution under visible light illumination in 60 min, 14% MO is still adsorbed on the catalyst, which can be totally removed under further 20 min illumination. Our synthesis strategy presents a new opportunity for the preparation of hollow structures with high active facets. And the proposed accurate evaluation methodology may be extended to other photocatalysts with high adsorption capability for organic pollutants.

Cu-MOF-Derived C-Doped CuO/Cu2O Hollow Nano-Octahedrons for Room-Temperature NO2 Sensing at the ppb Level

Chaofan Ma,Qun Yang,Huiyu Su,Huimin Yang,Xiaoxia Wang,Dawen Zeng

P-type semiconductors [copper oxide (CuO) and cuprous oxide (Cu2O)] have been widely researched as good gas sensing materials due to their unique oxygen adsorption properties. In this work, C-doped CuO/Cu2O hollow nano-octahedrons have been prepared by thermal decomposition of the Cu-based metal–organic framework ([Cu3(BTC)2]n). The CuO and Cu2O nanoparticles form nano-octahedron heterojunctions by a close packing mode. A large number of active heterojunction sites were exposed, which significantly increased the adsorbed oxygen (O2–) content. Meanwhile, doping C in the lattice of the heterojunction effectively reduces the band gap of CuO/Cu2O and promotes the chemical reaction of the target gas on the surface of the material. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the CuO/Cu2O heterojunction has strong adsorption ability for NO2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further reveals that C-doped CuO/Cu2O hollow nano-octahedrons-40 min heterojunction has the best electron transport performance. The sensors have good gas sensing response (22.88–50 ppm) and selectivity to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at room temperature (28 °C). In addition, the sensor has extremely low detection, which can detect parts per billion level NO2 (20.50% to 100 ppb). It is expected to provide a reference for the development of a room-temperature NO2 sensor.

Flower sphere-like Cu2O/CuO heterostructure derived from Cu-coordination polymer for enhancing Cl2 sensing at low-power consumption

Ting Li,Xianfa Zhang,Xiaoli Cheng,Yingming Xu,Shan Gao,Lihua Huo

It is necessary to achieve highly sensitive and low temperature detection of Cl 2 for the protection of the environment and human life and health. How to achieve sensitive detection of Cl 2 at low temperature remains a challenge. The construction of heterojunction is beneficial for promoting carrier transfer, increasing active sites, thus effectively improving sensing performance of materials. In this study, the flower sphere-like Cu 2 O/CuO composite with p-p heterojunction was obtained by using Cu-CPs as precursor followed with sintering treatment. The Cu 2 O/CuO sensor exhibits high response (S=405) to 10 ppm Cl 2 at low temperature (50 °C), the response/recovery time is 50 s/2420 s. At the same time, the Cu 2 O/CuO sensor has a low detection limit (50 ppb) and good long-term stability (60 days). The characterization results, e.g. electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), O 2 /Cl 2 -temperature programmed desorption ( O 2 /Cl 2 -TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) etc., reveal that oxygen vacancy effectively promotes the increase of surface adsorbed oxygen, the formation of p-p heterojunction not only modulates the electronic properties of Cu 2 O/CuO but also provides abundant adsorption sites for gas. The synergistic effect of the above factors makes Cu 2 O/CuO composite exhibit satisfactory Cl 2 sensing performance.

Dual Hydrogen Production System: Synergistic Effect of Ru and Ce Over Cu2O Nanotubes Drives Hydrogen Evolution and Formaldehyde Oxidation

Hongjie Yu,Lijun Zhang,Shaojian Jiang,Wenke Liu,Kai Deng,Ziqiang Wang,You Xu,Hongjing Wang,Liang Wang

Water splitting for hydrogen production is limited by high cell voltage and low energy conversion efficiencies due to the slow kinetic process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, an electrolytic system is constructed in which the cathode and anode co-release H 2 at ultra-low input voltage using formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) instead of OER. The prepared RuCe co-doped Cu 2 O nanotubes on copper foam (RuCe-Cu 2 O/CF) are used as electrode materials for the HER-FOR system. A current density of 0.8 A cm −2 is achieved at 0.55 V, and a stable hydrogen production process is realized at both the cathode and anode. Density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the synergistic effect of Ru and Ce drives: i) the d -band center of RuCe-Cu 2 O/CF away from the Fermi energy level; ii) the energy barrier for the C─H cracking of the H 2 C(OH)O * intermediate in FOR is lowered, which promotes the formation of H 2 from H * , and iii) ΔG H* tends to 0 (−0.1 eV), optimizing the reaction kinetics of HER. This work provides a new design for an efficient catalyst for dual hydrogen production systems from water splitting.

Ultrasensitive room-temperature NO2 gas sensor based on graphene-modified Cu2O nanocomposites: A combined experimental and first-principles study

Wenbin Ren,Jinfeng Luan,Liang Yin,Runjia Xu,Changchun Wang,Pinhua Zhang,Guangliang Cui,Kesong Yang

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas detection is crucial for environmental monitoring and pollution control. Here we report an ultrasensitive room-temperature NO 2 gas sensor based on graphene-modified Cu 2 O nanocomposite using a simple hydrothermal method. Gas sensing tests of the composites with different graphene contents reveal that those modified with 0.4 wt% graphene (0.4G-Cu 2 O) demonstrate the best performance, showing three times higher sensitivity than that of pure Cu 2 O. Additionally, 0.4G-Cu 2 O exhibits significantly reduced response and recovery times of 20 s and 65 s, respectively, which are notably shorter than those of many other sensing materials. These advantages were attributed to the unique nanostructure formed by graphene and Cu 2 O, where graphene enhanced the gas adsorption sites on the material surface and improved its conductivity. A combined experimental and first-principles study further elucidated the mechanisms behind the improved performance, highlighting the synergistic effects of graphene modification.

Tuning defects in Cu2O nanostructures via room temperature mechanical pressing: impacts on defect-dependent optical and photoelectrochemical sensing performances

Yun Cai,Wenyao Zhou,Hongli Wang,Jiajie Bi,Fengjiao Yu,Jun Fang,Yang Yang

The optical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing performances of transition metal oxides are greatly dependent on structural defects. However, defect engineering under ambient conditions remains challenging using conventional chemical methods. Here we propose that room temperature mechanical pressing is a simple defect tuning method that is compatible with a Cu2O nanostructure containing a high density of oxygen vacancy (VO) defects. The room temperature oxygenation of oxygen-deficient Cu2O by atmospheric oxygen can be dramatically accelerated due to the introduced interface strain. As a result, the VO-derived red emission intensity of the defective Cu2O nanostructure gradually reduces with the increasing mechanical static pressure applied within a short period of time. We reveal that the abundant surface VO defects also endow the VO-rich Cu2O nanostructure with superior SERS sensing performance attributable to the increased possibility of electron transition between Cu2O and the probe molecules. In contrast, the Cu2O with a modest VO level remediated by optimal mechanical pressing exhibits a significantly enhanced PEC sensing performance to the electron acceptor molecules because of the restricted recombination of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs under visible light. This case study provides a convenient, energy-saving and low-cost strategy for VO remediation in defective oxide nanostructures.

Synthesis of SrTiO3-TiO2-CaTiO3/Cu2O composite for stable and efficient H2 generation in deionized water and river water

Junfeng Yang,Jinsong Lu,Liangsheng Xie,Jingfeng Wu,Yu Wen,Qin Zhang

Herein, the SrTiO 3 -TiO 2 -CaTiO 3 /Cu 2 O quaternary composite has been designed and prepared via one-step hydrothermal process followed by a NaBH 4 reduction treatment. By comparing the H 2 production rate (HPR) of Sr-Ti-Ca/Cu samples prepared by different Cu sources, it is found that Sr-Ti-Ca/Cu has the best H 2 production performance when CuCl 2 is as Cu source. As expected, the highest HPR of Sr-Ti-Ca/Cu sample is up to 5.088 mmol g −1  h −1 , which is 195.7 times as higher as that of the Sr-Ti-Ca sample (0.026 mmol g −1  h −1 ) under the same conditions. Moreover, the HPR reached 0.692, 0.530 and 0.647 mmol g −1  h −1 in tap water, lake water and river water, indicating that the photocatalyst has high practicability in natural water sources. In addition, the experiment of the tap water composition effect on H 2 production performance shows that NO 3 − and SO 4 2− ions have great negative influence on the HPR. Compared with Sr-Ti-Ca, the light absorption of Sr-Ti-Ca/Cu extends over the entire visible region, the interface resistance decreases, and the photocurrent density increases. These results suggest that the well-designed dual p-n heterojunctions and dual type-II heterojunctions in Sr-Ti-Ca/Cu sample can enhance the light absorption in the ultraviolet region and realize the rapid separation and migration of photogenerated charge, thereby accelerating the production of H 2 . This work shows the strong advantage and potential of non-precious metal efficient photocatalyst system for producing H 2 from deionized water and natural fresh water.

The exploration of relationship between the evolution of Cu to Cu2O/CuO and photocatalytic efficiency toward water oxidation reaction

Tingxiang Chen,Liugen Zhang,Jiang Li,Changyan Guo,Shanshan Qiao,Yansong Zhao,Jide Wang

This paper introduces a facile method to develop core-shell nanocomposite Cu/(Cu 2 O/CuO) through gradually oxidation on Cu nanocomposite precursors. As-prepared catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the reaction of water oxidation reaction (WOR). Comparing with the reported catalyst, Cu/(Cu 2 O/CuO) posed one of the highest O 2 evolution around 7700 μmol g -1 ·h -1 . By analyzing the composition of catalysts in each reaction stages, the evolution pathway of Cu towards Cu 2 O/CuO and the different roles of each component in catalytic water oxidation reactions were deeply studied. In presence of high conductive Cu element and excellent light absorption Cu 2 O, the photo generated electron and holes can be effectively separated and greatly improve the efficiency of the catalyst. The evolution process and synergistic effects of the three components play a crucial role in improving photocatalytic efficiency, which promoting the nanocomposite to be a highly efficient core-shell catalyst for WOR.

Biofuel cell assembled by Cu2O nanocube laccase-mimicking nanozyme based sensitive self-powered sensor to detect fungicide thiophanate-methyl

Zhenchao Li,Mingyang Wang,Ying Zhang,Zihan Bian,Xin Liu,Lu Bai,Aihua Liu

Nanozymes exhibit excellent catalytic activity and stability, making them as potential substitutes for natural enzymes with extensive applications in self-powered biosensors (SPB). In this study, Cu 2 O nanocubes (NCs) exhibiting good laccase-like activity were simply synthesized. Subsequently, a two-compartment biofuel cell (BFC) was assembled, consisting of an anodic chamber containing Cu 2 O NCs modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) anode fueled by catechol, and a cathodic chamber featuring a bilirubin-oxidase/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/GCE biocathode. Notably, due to the ethylenediamine-like group in thiophanate-methyl (TM), which has a strong affinity for chelating the Cu(II)/Cu(I) active sites of the laccase-like of Cu 2 O NCs, the formation of Cu N bond leads to a significant inhibition of laccase-like activity and a great reduction in the open circuit potential (OCP) of the BFC. Based on this principle, an SPB was constructed to detect TM. The decline in OCP (ΔOCP) demonstrated a linear relationship with TM concentration ranging from 0.5 to 40 μM, achieving a lower detection limit of 0.11 μM (3σ/S). Moreover, the sensor exhibited no interference from other fungicides, indicating they did not affect TM detection. The as-developed sensor can be applicable to measure TM in soil and seawater samples satisfactorily. Thus, this study casts prospects for the application of nanozymes in self-powered sensors and lays the foundation for the development of fuel cells powered by phenolic pollutants in the future.

Novel construction of P- and N-type thermoelectric materials with different crystalline Cu2O-doped SWCNTs and their thermoelectric applications

Bao-Hui Shao,Tong-Yu Li,Wen-Yi Sun,Ke Hu,Chun-Hao Chang,Xin-Yi Luo,Qing-Xin Meng,Wen-Hao Geng,Di Zhang,Hong-Zhang Geng

Recent industrial advancements have accelerated the development of thermoelectric devices for waste heat recovery and energy conversion. The fabrication of both n-type and p-type thermoelectric materials from the same substance has attracted broad research interest. In this study, p-type and n-type thermoelectric films were prepared using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and Cu 2 O, with only minor differences in processing and composition. The two types of films exhibited distinct properties, which correlated with different crystal morphologies of Cu₂O: a rice-like microstructure in the p-type material and spherical microstructure in the n-type material. After p-type doping with Cu 2 O, the optimal Seebeck coefficient increased from 16 μV·K −1 to 41.2 μV·K −1 , while the electrical conductivity decreased from 67,891 S·m −1 to 2338.5 S·m −1 . The p-type SWCNT/Cu 2 O film achieved a maximum ZT value of 0.018, approximately 60 times higher than that of pure SWCNTs. For the n-type doped film, the Seebeck coefficient changed from 16 μV·K −1 to −17.6 μV·K −1 , and the electrical conductivity decreased to 27,828.5 S·m −1 , yielding a maximum ZT of 0.012—about 40 times higher than pure SWCNTs. A device consisting of six pairs of p-type and n-type films generated a voltage of up to 34.56 mV at a temperature difference of 100 K, demonstrating excellent thermoelectric performance. Both composite films also showed outstanding electrothermal properties: the p-type film reached 295 °C at 7 V with stable heating at 6 V, while the n-type film reached 335 °C at 6 V and exhibited good stability at 3.5 V. This work offers a simple and effective strategy for designing high-performance p-type and n-type thermoelectric materials from the same base system.

Oxidation cocatalyst/S-scheme junction cooperatively assists photocatalytic H2 production in ternary hybrid: The case of PdO@TiO2-Cu2O

Xiao Liu,Yanjun Zhang,Wuxia Zhang,Gang Cheng,Fan Tian,Wei Li,Jinyan Xiong

Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting holds significant potential in addressing the energy crisis and environmental pollution. However, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and insufficient surface catalytic reaction kinetics hinder the photocatalytic process. Constructing the catalytic systems with multi-channel charge-separation can effectively alleviate those issues. In this work, ternary PdO@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O composites have been synthesized through precursor calcination and low-temperature reduction, where PdO and Cu 2 O nanoparticles couple with the TiO 2 nanorods. Comparing to single TiO 2 , binary PdO@TiO 2 and TiO 2 -Cu 2 O, the PdO@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O hybrid exhibits enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production performance (5831μmol g -1 h −1 ), with a hydrogen production rate more than three times that of single TiO 2 . Based on the band structures of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, along with the photochemical/electrochemical, in-situ EPR, Photoluminescence (PL) tests, and work function calculations, the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction at the TiO 2 -Cu 2 O interface under light illumination facilitates the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of TiO 2 with holes in the valence band (VB) of Cu 2 O. In this regard, the established built-in electric field significantly accelerates the transfer of photogenerated charges while preserving their respective strong oxidation and reduction capabilities. Meanwhile, the introduction of PdO enriches the holes and further enhances the rate of charge separation. This S-scheme heterojunction with directional charge transfer and oxidation cocatalyst collectively form multi-channels of charge separation, optimizing charge migration and enabling efficient hydrogen production, thus improving the photocatalytic capability of pristine TiO 2 . This study provides a rational approach to construct efficient S-scheme heterojunction/oxidation cocatalyst multi-component catalytic systems for water splitting into hydrogen.
