Mold-like CuO@Co3O4 Nanocrystals with Abundant Metal Oxide Heterojunctions Enable Efficient Nitrate Electroreduction and Zinc-Nitrate Batteries

Luo Dan,Mu Juan,Chen Xi,Chen Fasheng,Huang Xiaochuan,Tian Chen,Li Xiao,Wang Mengjun,Jiang Zhenju,Jiang Minghang

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (NITRR) serves as a green and promising strategy that combines eco-friendly ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis and nitrate wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, various nitrogenous side products together with the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) render the reaction pathways intricate, bringing about excess power loss and inferior product selectivity. Herein, mold-like CuO@Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals with an abundance of metal oxide heterojunction on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were successfully synthesized through a straightforward one-pot solvothermal approach. Furthermore, the component proportion of CuO/Co 3 O 4 in the catalyst can be accurately tuned via modulating the molar ratio between copper and cobalt precursors introduced in the synthetic procedure. Compared to the alone CuO interface, the formation of the CuO@Co 3 O 4 heterojunction interface effectively modulates the catalyst’s capacity to activate water molecules and generate reactive hydrogen species. This, in turn, substantially facilitates the further selective hydrogenation of reactive species adsorbed on the CuO interface to form NH 3 .The synthesized CuO@Co 3 O 4 /CNTs catalyst demonstrates an impressive Faradaic efficiency for NH 3 production ( FE NH 3 ) of 96.19 ± 0.71% at −0.8 V vs RHE, even under extremely low nitrate concentrations, significantly outperforming the CuO/CNTs counterpart. In addition, the assembled NITRR||ZnOR cell with CuO@Co 3 O 4 /CNTs as cathode and zinc foil as anode achieves a peak power density of 5.29 mW cm –2 when the discharge current density reaches 14 mA cm –2 . The present research puts forward an innovative design route for high-efficiency metal oxide heterojunction electrocatalysts applied in nitrate electroreduction for ammonia synthesis.

Atom-by-atom electrodeposited CuO nanostructures on carbon electrode for rapid detection of type II diabetes drug Gliclazide

Hong Wan,Mingfang Zhan,Sima Akter,Minglan Ma,Chunyan Yin,Huwei Liu,Sakil Mahmud

CuO-modified SPCE enables sensitive electrochemical detection of gliclazide. • Electrodeposited CuO nanostructures increase electroactive surface area. • Oxidation of gliclazide follows proton-coupled two-electron transfer kinetics. • Exhibits low LODs (8.35 μM by LSV, 3.0 μM by amperometry) and wide linearity. • Demonstrates high stability, reproducibility, and recovery in real samples. The sensitive and selective detection of gliclazide (GLi), a critical antidiabetic drug, is essential for pharmaceutical quality control and therapeutic monitoring. This work presents a highly efficient electrochemical sensor based on a screen-printed carbon electrode modified with electrodeposited copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO/SPCE). Comprehensive physicochemical characterization confirmed the successful formation of a nanostructured CuO film, significantly enhancing the electroactive surface area. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) revealed a well-defined oxidation peak at 0.315 V with a peak current ( I ) of −2.725 μA at pH 4.0, indicating an irreversible, adsorption-controlled, proton-coupled two-electron transfer process. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) exhibited excellent linearity (10–107 μM, R 2  = 0.9890) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.35 μM, while amperometric detection further improved the sensitivity, yielding an LOD of 3.0 μM. The sensor demonstrated outstanding reproducibility (relative standard deviation, RSD = 5.28%), stability (RSD = 4.53%), and high recovery rates (93.21–109.28%) in real pharmaceutical samples. These findings highlight CuO/SPCE as an effective, rapid, and reliable platform for routine GLi monitoring in pharmaceutical and clinical settings. Uncovering the effects of core and shell exchanges in CuO/Co3O4 composite on formaldehyde degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation

Hao Fang,Wei Wang,Chenyi Wang,Xinyun Li,Menglan Xu,Ziyi Guo,Shengran Yu,Yanqing Cong,Shi-Wen Lv

Herein, for the first time, MOF-on-MOF-derived CuO/Co 3 O 4 composites with core-shell structure is prepared. The internal electric field formed at the heterojunction interface can accelerate charge transfer and offer more active sites, so enhancing the performance of CuO/Co 3 O 4 composites in formaldehyde degradation via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. It is surprised to find that the adjustment of core and shell position in CuO/Co 3 O 4 composites has an important impact on the mechanism of PMS activation. Under the mediation of internal electric field, free electron will gather around Co 3 O 4 component of CuO/Co 3 O 4 composites. When Co 3 O 4 is served as the shell of CuO/Co 3 O 4 composite (marked as CuO/Co 3 O 4 –1), CuO/Co 3 O 4 composite will become electron donor and provide electron to activate PMS for producing SO 4 •– and OH • , which can oxidize formaldehyde into CO 2 and H 2 O. Interestingly, CuO/Co 3 O 4 composite will become electron acceptor when CuO is employed as the shell (denoted as CuO/Co 3 O 4 –2), so PMS can be easily oxidized into SO 5 •– and then decomposed into 1 O 2 . Due to the feature of 1 O 2 being moderate oxidation ability, formaldehyde can be selectively converted by 1 O 2 into formic acid with high economic value. Additionally, theoretical calculation based on density functional theory further proves these results. This work clarifies the effects of core and shell exchanges in CuO/Co 3 O 4 composite on catalytic activity, sharing some new insights for selective degradation of formaldehyde.

In situ real-time continuous monitoring of soil carbonate ions using a portable CuO–Cu2O-based electrochemical sensor

Yuying Bao,Jingfang Ji,Jiyu Chen,Kaiquan Li,Pan Liu,Jingmin Ge,Ronghan Wei,Xiaodong Lei,Jingwei Zhang

Real-time continuous monitoring of soil salinity and alkalinity is essential for sustainable agriculture, yet the in-situ detection of carbonate ions (CO 3 2− ), a key indicator of soil alkalinity, remains a challenge. Herein, we designed a portable electrochemical sensor for the real-time continuous detection of free CO 3 2− in soil. The CuO–Cu 2 O nanowires were synthesized by in-situ oxidation and topological transformation. The nanowires exhibited excellent chemical and structural stability and resistance to alkali, which were used as sensing material. The CuO–Cu 2 O sensor exhibited excellent sensing performance over a wide temperature range (0–40 °C) and pH (pH value: 7–11), and in complex media including aqueous solutions, slurry and soil, which demonstrated that the CuO–Cu 2 O sensor possessed excellent resistance to biological interference, immunity to colloidal particle effects and high ion selectivity, highlighting its great potential for practical applications in complex environments. The sensor demonstrated a low detection limit (5.4 ppb), wide detection range (0.01−1600 ppm), high sensitivity (264.98 μA mM −1  cm −2 ), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that CuO–Cu 2 O heterostructure-induced electron redistribution triggered a shift of the d-band center toward the Fermi level, strengthened CO 3 2− adsorption, facilitated charge transfer, and then resulted in superior electrochemical response. Furthermore, it was integrated with ESP32 and Internet of Things (IoT) technology into a portable device for real-time monitoring of free CO 3 2− concentration in soil. This work provides a strategy for soil sensors to support precision agriculture and environmental monitoring.

An ultra-sensitive photoelectrochemical sensor based on Sb2WO6/CuO p-n heterojunction for detection of carmine in food

Linzi Huang,Ling Bai,Xiaoqian Sun,Le Zhou,Xinyi Li,Yixi Xie,Chenxi Wang,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

The development of efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing materials for the food additive carmine (CRM) remains a significant challenge, with no PEC sensor reported for CRM to date. Herein, we reported the first PEC sensor based on an Sb 2 WO 6 /CuO p-n heterojunction for CRM detection. The heterojunction interface facilitated efficient charge separation through an internal electric field, as elucidated by density functional theory calculations. The detection mechanism relied on the specific binding between the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in CRM molecules and the metal sites on the CuO surface. This interaction blocked the active sites, inhibited hole transfer, and led to a significant decrease in photocurrent. The sensor exhibited a wide linear range (0.4 - 500 μM), a low limit of detection (0.19 μM), and excellent stability (>96.74%). Furthermore, its successful application in beverage samples yielded recovery rates of 97.30 - 101.50%. This work provides a novel PEC platform for sensitive food additive monitoring.

Boosting singlet oxygen generation through peroxymonosulfate activation over CeO2-supported CuO catalyst to enhance degradation of fluorinated antibiotic

Shuai Xiao,Tong Wei,Menglan Xu,Tongtong Yu,Wei Wang,Hao Fang,Shi-Wen Lv

Herein, a novel CeO 2 -supported CuO composite (denoted as CuO/CeO 2 ) is rationally designed and synthesized via a facile strategy for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade fluorinated antibiotic (namely florfenicol). Benefiting from the synergistic effects between CeO 2 and CuO, abundant Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and Cu + /Cu 2+ redox couples and oxygen vacancies are formed in the composite, which can significantly accelerate interfacial charge transfer and provide sufficient active sites. The optimized CuO/CeO 2 catalyst shows exceptional catalytic performance, achieving 95.9% removal efficiency of florfenicol within 16 min, together with excellent pH adaptability, anti-interference capacity, and reusability. The mechanistic analysis reveals that PMS is firstly adsorbed on the CuO/CeO 2 surface to form CuO/CeO 2 -PMS* complexes, which then undergoes disproportionation to produce 1 O 2 . Meanwhile, O 2 •– can also transform PMS into SO 5 •‒ , which further decomposes into 1 O 2 . The nonradical pathway dominated by 1 O 2 is responsible for the degradation of florfenicol, whereas radical species and high-valent copper contribute minimally. All in all, this work provides a high-efficiency strategy for selective 1 O 2 generation in advanced oxidation processes, offering a promising approach for fluorinated antibiotic wastewater remediation.

A Novel Bi2O3-TeO2-B2O3-CuO Glass for Copper Metallization of Si3N4: Wettability, Thermal Stability, and Bonding Performance

Chaochen Chen,Fang Lei,Shiqing Dang,Hongyang Zhang,Ying Shi,Haohong Chen

To address the lack of suitable glass systems for silicon nitride (Si3N4) surface metallization, which requires high wettability and thermal stability, and robust bonding between the copper layer and the ceramic substrate, a novel Bi2O3-TeO2-B2O3-CuO glass system was developed. This study systematically investigated the influence of Bi2O3concentration, glass properties, optimized paste composition, and brazing mechanism using phase analysis, microstructural characterization, particle size statistics, thermal analysis, and tensile testing. An optimal glass composition containing 20 mol% Bi2O3was identified, exhibiting high thermal stability (ΔT = 224 °C) and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 9.63 × 10−6°C−1. At a brazing temperature of 750 °C, the glass demonstrated excellent wettability with a contact angle of 27°. A conductive paste comprising 94 wt% Cu and 6 wt% glass yielded a thick film with a minimum resistivity of 6.25 μΩ·cm and a maximum tensile strength of 25.2 MPa. Mechanism analysis revealed that the superior wettability drives the liquid glass phase to form a thin intermediate layer that significantly reinforces adhesion. These findings contribute to the research and development of subsequent novel glass systems with superior performance.

Zengze Liu,Ziwei Zheng,Yanlin Liu,Xiaoqiu Yang,Yangwei Chen,Fang Tan

This study featured about the synthesis of graphene oxide hydrogel-CuO@reduced graphene oxide (rGH-CuO@rGO) micromotors with core-shell structure via an ultrasonication-assisted chemical precipitation method and their application for catalytic dye degradation. The micromotors were comprehensively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), spectroscopic techniques (Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman), surface area measurement (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine their microstructure, composition, and chemical states. Degradation performance for methylene blue (MB) was evaluated under varying conditions: reaction time (0–120 min), peroxymonosulfate (PMS) concentration (0–5 g·L −1 ), pH (3–8), quantity of micromotors (12–24), and MB concentration (5–100 mg·L −1 ). The removal rate of MB was achieved over 90 % within 120 min at pH 8. The micromotors demonstrated excellent catalytic efficiency, reusability and stability over four cycles. In the dual oxidant system (H₂O₂/PMS) the micromotors exhibited effective self-propulsion and stable MB removal. The generation of hydroxyl (•OH) and sulfate (•SO₄ − ) free radicals in the system was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer (EPR). Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF/MS) was used to identify the degradation intermediates, and the possible MB degradation pathways were proposed. Moreover, the micromotors showed satisfactory performance in removing mixed dye wastewater and phenolic compound. Additionally, the low ecotoxicity of the micromotors was demonstrated by cytotoxicity assessment. This study provided a novel and valuable route to synthesizing self-driving micromotors with potential extensive applications in environmental remediation.

In-situ growth of NiFe-LDH/CuO nanorod-sheet heterostructure for oxygen evolution reaction and urea oxidation reaction

Xiaoyun Zhang,Ying Cui,Tao Qin,Muxin Liu,Jinlong Ge

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) impede the development of water splitting for hydrogen production. Replacing the anodic oxygen evolution reaction by urea oxidation reaction (UOR) can reduce the thermodynamic equilibrium potential and improve the hydrogen production efficiency. In this work, a NiFe-LDH/CuO heterostructure was constructed via a two-step electrochemical deposition process for both OER and UOR. The nanorod-sheet NiFe-LDH/CuO showed fast electron transfer rate for the CuO nanorod and exposed more active sites for the NiFe-LDH nanosheet. The electron redistribution and d -band center optimization induced by the heterostructure of NiFe-LDH/CuO as revealed by DFT calculation. The synthesized heterostructure catalyst only required overpotential of 238 mV for OER and potential of 1.231 V for UOR, respectively.

Synergistic Interface Engineering in Bi₂O₃-In₂O₃@CuO Nanowires for Highly Selective Electrocatalytic CO₂ Reduction to Formate

Rongtao Xiao,Ling Ma,Ya Zhang,Honggui Wang,Zhe Piao

Converting carbon dioxide and water into high-value chemicals using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power is an effective strategy to simultaneously address the depletion of fossil energy and promote low-carbon emissions and alleviate the greenhouse effect. The electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 RR) involves a multi-proton coupled electron transfer process, including multiple steps such as CO 2 adsorption, activation and hydrogenation. Although significant progress has been made in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO 2 RR to formate, achieving formate production that combines sustained high activity, high selectivity and high stability still faces severe challenges. This study developed a high-performance electrocatalyst, Bi 2 O 3 -In 2 O 3 @CuO, which was obtained by in-situ growth of core-shell nanowire structures on Cu foams. This structure takes Cu nanowires (NWs) as the core, and the outer layer was bismuth-indium metal oxide shell. The obtained catalyst exhibited excellent performance in CO 2 RR, with a current density reaching 28.4 mA cm -2 and a Faraday efficiency of formate as high as 88.7%.
