Fabrication of 3 D Mesoporous Black TiO2/MoS2/TiO2 Nanosheets for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis

Xuefeng Liu,Zipeng Xing,Hang Zhang,Wenmei Wang,Yan Zhang,Zhenzi Li,Xiaoyan Wu,Xiujuan Yu,Wei Zhou

Graphical Pass the Mo : A 3 D sandwich of mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT was fabricated using a facile mechanochemistry method combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach. The material exhibited excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution owing to the sandwich-like heterojunction structure and Ti 3+ doping. A novel 3 D mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT sandwich-like nanosheet was successfully fabricated using a facile mechanochemical process combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach, followed by mild calcination (350 °C) under an argon atmosphere. The MBT/MoS 2 /MBT exhibits a 3 D sandwich-like nanosheet structure and heterojunctions are formed at the interfaces between MoS 2 and black TiO 2 . The significantly narrowed band gap of MBT/MoS 2 /MBT is attributed to the introduction of MoS 2 and the formed Ti 3+ species in the frameworks. The visible-light photocatalytic degradation rate of methyl orange and the hydrogen production rate are as high as 89.86 % and 0.56 mmol h −1 g −1 , respectively. The introduction of MoS 2 and Ti 3+ in the frameworks favors the visible-light absorption and the separation of photogenerated charges, and the 3 D sandwich-like heterojunction structure facilitates the transfer of photogenerated charges.

3-D numerical simulations for polycondensation of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) in twin screw extruder

Yuan Zong,Hao Tang,Ling Zhao

Poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) is a typical high-performance fiber and usually synthesized by low temperature solution polycondensation in twin screw extruder. During the reactive extrusion, flow behavior, rheokinetics, and temperature are highly coupled, which makes it difficult to ensure the quality of product. In the present work, the rheokinetics of the PPTA solution is established by experiments and its reactive extrusion is investigated via 3-D numerical simulation. The flow pattern, molecular weight distribution and temperature have been investigated for the extruders with three different elements, i.e., full flight screw (FF), kneading block (KB), and screw mixing element (SME). The results indicate that the unique flow characteristic of different screw elements affects mixing experience of the reactants and further the PPTA qualities. By numerical simulation, it shows the temperature increase within the tested extrusion stage is 7 K and reaction heat is found the main energy source for extrusion stage. Furthermore, heat removal method is verified with consideration of industrial production process. The numerical simulation work also discusses the reaction and mixing process in the extruders with three combined screws. The results show the introduction of more reverse FF and KB elements can lead to higher quality of PPTA. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 57:1252–1261, 2017. © 2017 Society of Plastics Engineers

Characterization of a novel marine microbial esterase and its use to make D-methyl lactate

Yilong Wang,Yun Zhang,Aijun Sun,Yunfeng Hu

A novel marine microbial esterase PHE14 was cloned from the genome of Pseudomonas oryzihabitans HUP022 isolated from the deep sea of the western Pacific Ocean. Esterase PHE14 exhibited very good tolerance to most organic solvents, surfactants and metal ions tested, thus making it a good esterase candidate for organic synthesis that requires an organic solvent, surfactants or metal ions. Esterase PHE14 was utilized as a biocatalyst in the asymmetric synthesis of D-methyl lactate by enzymatic kinetic resolution. D-methyl lactate is a key chiral chemical. Contrary to some previous reports, the addition of an organic solvent and surfactants in the enzymatic reaction did not have a beneficial effect on the kinetic resolution catalyzed by esterase PHE14. Our study is the first report on the preparation of the enantiomerically enriched product D-methyl lactate by enzymatic kinetic resolution. The desired enantiomerically enriched product D-methyl lactate was obtained with a high enantiomeric excess of 99% and yield of 88.7% after process optimization. The deep sea microbial esterase PHE14 is a green biocatalyst with very good potential in asymmetric synthesis in industry and can replace the traditional organic synthesis that causes pollution to the environment.

Green preparation of D-tryptophan imprinted self-supported membrane for ultrahigh enantioseparation of racemic tryptophan

Zhiyong Zhou,Ke Cui,Yu Mao,Wenshuai Chai,Nian Wang,Zhongqi Ren

Enantioseparation of chiral compounds is important for pharmaceutical production. Chiral resolution of racemic tryptophan has attracted increasing attention. Traditional separation methods have the disadvantages of being high cost, energy intensive and environmentally unfriendly. Membrane permeation seems promising for application in the enantioseparation of racemic tryptophan with the advantages of energy efficiency and no additives. However, lots of organic compounds are commonly used for the preparation of various membranes for enantioseparation of racemic tryptophan. Therefore, we prepared a molecularly imprinted self-supported membrane (MISM) using a green and clean method with natural polymer sodium alginate (SA) as the functional polymer, water as the solvent and CaCl2 as the crosslinking agent. The crosslinking by CaCl2 was confirmed by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The surface and internal structures of the MISM and non-imprinted self-supported membrane (NISM) were observed by atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The addition of a template molecule can significantly improve the MISM surface roughness. The compact structures of MISM and NISM were confirmed by the cross-sectional images. The thermo stability of MISM was studied. In addition, the effects of pH and crosslinking time on the swelling behavior of MISM were investigated. A high concentration of OH− in alkali solution can remarkably weaken the electrostatic interaction between Ca2+ and COO−. The effects of preparation conditions, permeation conditions and concentration polarization on the pressure-driven permeation performance of MISM were investigated. Ultrahigh enantioseparation performance in 99% ee of the permeation solution can be obtained under mild conditions. Reducing the concentration polarization by increasing the environmental temperature and continuous stirring is beneficial to obtaining ultrahigh ee. Comparison with previous studies on pressure-driven permeation performance indicates that the proposed green and clean preparation method for a molecularly imprinted self-supported membrane is not only environmentally friendly but also efficient in obtaining ultrahigh ee.

Distinctive p-d Orbital Hybridization in CuSb Porous Nanonetworks for Enhanced Nitrite Electroreduction to Ammonia

Min Yan,Ranran Wei,Ruifan Zhang,Xiaoying Zhang,Shiqin Sun,Xuewen Wei,Xianlong Wang,Shuli Yin,Yinglong Wang

Electrochemical nitrite reduction reaction ( NO 2 − RR ${\mathrm{NO}}_{\mathrm{2}}^{\mathrm{ - }}{\mathrm{RR}}$ ), as a green and sustainable ammonia synthesis technology, has broad application prospects and environmental friendliness. Herein, an unconventional p - d orbital hybridization strategy is reported to realize the fabrication of defect-rich CuSb porous nanonetwork (CuSb PNs) electrocatalyst for NO 2 − RR ${\mathrm{NO}}_{\mathrm{2}}^ - {\mathrm{RR}}$ . The crystalline/amorphous heterophase structure is cleverly introduced into the porous nanonetworks, and this defect-rich structure exposes more atoms and activated boundaries. CuSb PNs exhibit a large NH 3 yield ( r N H 3 ${{r}_{{\mathrm{N}}{{{\mathrm{H}}}_{\mathrm{3}}}}}$ ) of 946.1 µg h −1 m cat − 1 ${\mathrm{m}}_{{\mathrm{cat}}}^{ - {\mathrm{1}}}$ and a high faradaic efficiency (FE) of 90.7%. Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that the excellent performance of CuSb PNs results from the defect-rich porous nanonetworks structure and the p-d hybridization of Cu and Sb elements. This work describes a powerful pathway for the fabrication of p - d orbital hybrid defect-rich porous nanonetworks catalysts, and provides hope for solving the problem of nitrogen oxide pollution in the field of environment and energy.

Dynamic proton migration in dual linkage-engineered D-π-A system for photosynthesis H2O2 generation

Zhihan Yu,Dainan Zhang,Chenbing Ai,Jianjun Zhang,Quanjun Xiang

Accelerated charge migration and proton transfer to the reaction site are critical factors for improving photocatalytic efficiency. However, realizing both simultaneously is challenging because of the sluggish water (proton source) oxidation kinetics and interdependent redox reactions. Herein, we design an imide and hydrogen bond to connect carbon nitride ports of the D-π-A system with the dual-engineered linkages. The system uses an acetylene functional group and an imidazole ring as spatially separated water oxidation and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic centers for photogenerated charge separation, respectively. The imine bond is a bridge grafted to the oxidation site to act as a hydrogen proton trap, and the hydrogen bond formed between reduction site and carbon nitride is used as the channel for instantaneous proton delivery to the reduction center. In situ characterization confirms that the linking sites protonation optimizes the pathway of ORR to H 2 O 2 and facilitates the *OOH intermediates generated. It is concluded that proton transport plays a critical role in optimizing photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. Our work provides a strategy to improve dynamic proton transfer mechanisms.

Conversion of Nitrate to Ammonia by Amidinothiourea-Coordinated Metal Molecular Electrocatalysts with d−π Conjugation

Xue-Bo Liu,Rui Zhao,Min-Min Xu,Shang-Xiong Wei,Xue-Feng Cheng,Jing-Hui He

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NO3RR) provides a desired alternative of the traditional Haber–Bosch route for ammonia production, igniting a research boom in the development of electrocatalysts with high activity. Among them, molecular electrocatalysts hold considerable promise for the NO3RR, suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. However, the complicated synthesis procedure, usage of environmentally unfriendly organic solvents, and poor stability of Cu-based molecular electrocatalysts greatly limit their employment in NO3RR, and the development of desired Cu-based molecular catalysts remains challenging. Herein, a simple nonorganic solvent involving a one-step strategy was proposed to synthesize d−π-conjugated molecular electrocatalysts metal–amidinothiourea (M-ATU). Cu-ATU is composed of Cu coordinated with two S and two N atoms, whereas Ni-ATU is formed by Ni with four N atoms from two ATU ligands. Remarkably, Cu-ATU with a Cu–N2S2 coordination configuration exhibits superior NO3RR activity with a NH3 yield rate of 159.8 mg h–1 mgcat–1 (−1.54 V) and Faradaic efficiency of 91.7% (−1.34 V), outperforming previously reported molecular catalysts. Compared to Ni-ATU, Cu-ATU transfers more electrons to the *NO intermediate, effectively breaking the strong sp2 hybridization system and weakening the energy of N═O bonds. The increase in free energy of *NO reduced the energy barriers of the rate-determining step, facilitating the further hydrogenation process over Cu-ATU. Our work opened up a new horizon for exploring molecular electrocatalysts for nitrate activation and paved a way for the in-depth understanding of catalytic behaviors, aligning more closely with industrial demands.

Damage caused by He and D plasma exposure in Mo/Zr-added W-Y2O3 composites

X.L. Ren,G. Yao,L.M. Luo,Y. Xu,A. Yabuuchi,Q. Xu

In the present study, we developed Mo- and Zr-added W-Y2O3 composites, and investigated their surface damage, including commercially available W induced by He and D as well as He and D mixture plasmas. Blistering was not observed in the D-plasma-irradiated W and W composites. The thickness of the damaged surface layer due to He plasma exposure of the W-Mo-Y2O3 composite was similar to that of W. However, the thickness of the damaged surface layer of the W-Y2O3 composite was half that of W. In addition, the thickness of the damaged surface layer of the W-Zr-Y2O3 composite was further improved by 5 times. Y2O3 nanoparticles, especially refined Zr-Y-O nanoparticles, act as He trap sites to suppress the formation and growth of He bubbles. Furthermore, the W-O-Y and W-O-Zr-Y nanoparticles increased the solubility of He and delayed He diffusion, hindering the formation of He bubbles.

Dapagliflozin attenuates skeletal muscle atrophy in diabetic nephropathy mice through suppressing Gasdermin D-mediated pyroptosis

Shuo Zhang,Shuang Guo,Pengyu Wang,Yan Song,Leiming Yang,Qiyu Sun,Qi Huang,Youzhi Zhang

Background Skeletal muscle atrophy is a clinical concern in diabetic nephropathy, and without effective therapeutic approaches. Massive evidence has demonstrated that dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor can relieve diabetic nephropathy by inhibiting glucose re-absorption or podocyte pyroptosis. Nevertheless, whether dapagliflozin could treat skeletal muscle atrophy or the potential protection mechanism in diabetic nephropathy mice is unclear. Methods The variety of approaches were used to assess the particular histology-associated characteristics, mRNA, and protein expression. These included examing the morphology of renal and skeletal muscle tissues through H&E staining, detecting mRNA and protein expression through real-time PCR and Western blot analysis, and monitoring fasting blood glucose levels by using Blood Glucose Monitor Test Kits. Results Dapagliflozin mitigated renal tissue injury with podocyte protein-nephrin and skeletal muscle atrophy effectively with mitochondrial-related proteins. Meanwhile, our research revealed that Casp3 was the target gene and dapagliflozin could decrease the expressions. Subsequently, we verified that dapagliflozin can effectively decrease canonical pyroptosis pathway proteins, which include Gasdermin D, NLRP3, Casp1, and ASC. Meanwhile, Palmitic acid (PA) induced Gasdermin E-N fragment (non-canonical pyroptosis protein) in C2C12 cells, and then released the inflammatory molecules such as IL-1β, IL-18, and NF-kappaB, which were suppressed by dapagliflozin treatment. Aside from that, dapagliflozin demonstrated a good binding affinity to the Casp3 and Gasdermin D protein, whereas it had a less binding affinity with NLRP3, Casp1, ASC, and Gasdermin E. At last, the Gasdermin D inhibitor can reverse the therapeutic effect of dapagliflozin. Conclusion Dapagliflozin alleviates skeletal muscle atrophy in diabetic nephropathy mice, which is through the Gasdermin D-mediated canonical pyroptosis pathway.

D@MSNs-P/PCL antibacterial nanofibers combined with DBD cold plasma for fresh pork preservation

Zhumiao Ye,Haidu Yuan,Jianhao Zhang,Wenjing Yan,Changrui Xing

Fresh pork is easily contaminated by microorganisms, leading to spoilage. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) cold plasma technology has shown significant advantages in the preservation of meat. However, severe lipid oxidation of pork resulting from DBD treatment greatly limits its development. Herein, the antibacterial D@MSNs-P/PCL nanofiber membranes were prepared by modification polycaprolactone (PCL) with pre-reported nanomaterials (D@MSNs-P) through electrostatic spinning. Compared with the PCL membranes, the D@MSNs-P/PCL membranes showed better water stability, lower water vapor transmission rate, stronger hydrophobicity, and potent antibacterial activity. The D@MSNs-P/PCL membranes can be used for wrapping fresh pork before treatment with DBD plasma, which can not only improve the antibacterial efficiency but effectively inhibit the lipid oxidation and color change of fresh pork, extending the shelf life for 2 days. The developed D@MSNs-P/PCL membranes can also be used alone to preserve other fresh meat or oily food, with a wide range of application prospects.

Toxicity testing of four silver nanoparticle-coated dental castings in 3-D LO2 cell cultures

Yi-ying Zhao,Qiang Chu,Xu-er Shi,Xiao-dong Zheng,Xiao-ting Shen,Yan-zhen Zhang

To address the controversial issue of the toxicity of dental alloys and silver nanoparticles in medical applications, an in vivo-like LO2 3-D model was constructed within polyvinylidene fluoride hollow fiber materials to mimic the microenvironment of liver tissue. The use of microscopy methods and the measurement of liver-specific functions optimized the model for best cell performances and also proved the superiority of the 3-D LO2 model when compared with the traditional monolayer model. Toxicity tests were conducted using the newly constructed model, finding that four dental castings coated with silver nanoparticles were toxic to human hepatocytes after cell viability assays. In general, the toxicity of both the castings and the coated silver nanoparticles aggravated as time increased, yet the nanoparticles attenuated the general toxicity by preventing metal ion release, especially at high concentrations.
