AgCo bimetallic cocatalyst modified g-C3N4 for improving photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Jing-Xiao Li,Yu-Long Xie,Shang-Mei Yang

Bimetallic AgCo/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts were successfully prepared by a facile chemical reduction method and used to investigate their photocatalytic H 2 production performance. Bimetallic AgCo as a cocatalyst can be well matched with g-C 3 N 4 , which is beneficial for increasing the number of active reaction sites and narrowing the band gap. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was explored by XRD , FTIR, SEM, TEM, UV–vis DRS , BET, and PL characterization. The photocatalytic H 2 production activity of the optimal 5%AgCo/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst reached 12994.2 μmoL/g, which was 54.7 times higher than g-C 3 N 4 . Owing to the close interfacial contact between bimetallic AgCo and g-C 3 N 4 , the transfer distance was shortened, and the photogenerated electron and hole pairs were effectively separated. This study provides a new strategy for the synthesis of excellent H 2 production photocatalysts using bimetallic nanoparticles .

A facile pretreatment method for efficient immobilization of penicillin G acylase

Pixiang Wang,Xiangyu Gong,Erzheng Su,Jingli Xie,Dongzhi Wei

A facile pretreatment method was developed to obtain high specific activity of PGA from recombinant E. coli cells for preparing immobilized enzyme with high activity, which coupled selective extraction of PGA with butyl acetate and adsorption of butyl acetate with active carbon. Butyl acetate (5%, v/v) led to a 92.0% release of PGA, the specific activity of which in the extracting solution was twice that obtained by sonication. The negative effect on PGA immobilization due to residual butyl acetate in the extracting solution was removed by adding active carbon (8%, w/v). The final PGA solution meets requirement for industrial immobilization while eliminating the high cost of a traditional purification process. This pretreatment method developed in this work is simple, highly performing and cost-effective. It has been employed in a 10   tons/year immobilized PGA production line.

Transferable G/Au Film for Constructing a Variety of SERS Substrates

Xinyu Zhang,Xin Cai,Naiqiang Yin,Yingying Wang,Yang Jiao,Chundong Liu

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), as one of the most powerful analytical methods, undertakes important inspection tasks in various fields. Generally, the performance of an SERS-active substrate relies heavily on its structure, which makes it difficult to integrate multiple-functional detectability on the same substrate. To address this problem, here we designed and constructed a film of graphene/Au nanoparticles (G/Au film) through a simple method, which can be conveniently transferred to different substrates to form various composite SERS substrates subsequently. By means of the combination of the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism (EM) and the chemical enhancement mechanism (CM) of this structure, the film realized good SERS performance experimentally, with the enhancement factor (EF) approaching ca. 1.40 × 105. In addition, the G/Au film had high mechanical strength and had large specific surface area and good biocompatibility that is beneficial for Raman detection. By further transferring the film to an Ag/Si composite substrate and PDMS flexible film, it showed enhanced sensitivity and in situ detectability, respectively, indicating high compatibility and promising prospect in Raman detection.

Universal integration of photothermal particles onto g-C3N4 towards improved photocatalysis

Xiqing Xie,Qiaoqi Guo,Shujing Yu,Huajun Feng,Yingfeng Xu

The photothermal effect has been recognized as a universal promoter in various photocatalytic reactions. However, in many promising nanocomposite systems, the integration of heterogeneous photothermal materials with photocatalysts remains a significant technical challenge. Focusing on the emerging graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) based photocatalyst, we identified that the segregation of the introduced photothermal particles results from the dynamic instability of the original solid-solid dispersion system, which essentially origins from a sluggish two-step solid-liquid-solid phase transformation of urea towards g-C 3 N 4 . By taking advantages of the photothermal particles to be loaded, we developed a photothermal-polymerization strategy to create a rapid heating to overcome their undesired segregation during g-C 3 N 4 formation. The strategy enables a one-step loading of various photothermal particles on the g-C 3 N 4 , presenting a versatile methodology. This sustainable technique enhances the synthesis yield of g-C 3 N 4 by 352 % with reduced energy consumption. The derived photothermal particles-dispersed g-C 3 N 4 shows 290 % improvement in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction compared to the separated system, which is obtained from the traditional heating synthesis. Beyond enriching the accessible categories of composite catalysts, this study may deepen physiochemical insights into the dynamic transformation of the novel dispersion system.

Ionolamellar liquid crystal of G-quadruplex in a protic ionic liquid

Zeyi Wang,Yuzhen Qian,Ping Qi,Aixin Song,Jingcheng Hao

Hypothesis G-quadruplex structures, assembled from guanosine (G) or its derivatives, are significant for their close association with biological processes and their capacity to serve as good templates for constructing functional materials, but the research and applications of G-quadruplex structures are mainly confined to aqueous solutions (in water). Experiments We report the experimental evidence of an ionolamellar liquid crystal of G-quadruplex assembled from underivatized guanosine, which are induced by metal ions (K + , Na + , Ca 2+ and Sr 2+ ) in a protic ionic liquid (ethylammonium nitrate). The stacking mode of G-quartets varies with borate ester content and the ratio of borate ester to guanosine ( R B/G ) for K + , while remaining unchanged for Na + . For Ca 2+ and Sr 2+ , the stacking mode also changes by excess divalent metal ions, leading to a chiral inversion with changing concentrations of guanosine, and exhibiting strong affinity with borate ester to stabilize G-quadruplex. Ionolamellar liquid crystal displays ionic conductivity, κ = 7.20 and 9.96 mS·cm −1 for mono-and di-valent ions, respectively. Findings These results advance our understanding of the structures of G-quadruplex and the role of dynamic borate esters in ILs, and may offer a new option to design the ionolamellar liquid crystal and electrolytes for biomedical devices.

Uranium removal by magnetic ZnFe2O4@g-C3N4 nanocomposites: characterization and mechanism

Wenxuan Fang,Chang Sun,Zhengying Chang,Yandi Wang,Xiangxue Wang,Shujun Yu

The highly efficient extraction of uranium from aquatic environments through adsorption method has emerged as a pivotal research focus, particularly within the domains of environmental protection and sustainable development. In this investigation, magnetically recyclable mesoporous ZnFe 2 O 4 @g-C 3 N 4 (ZFOCN) is synthesized by grafting ZnFe 2 O 4 (ZFO) nanospheres onto g-C 3 N 4 (CN) nanosheets through straightforward solution mixing followed by simple calcination, which addresses the challenge associated with the recovery of adsorbents. Characterization analyses and batch experiments reveal that the ZFOCN surface exhibits more negative zeta potential (∼−14.00 mV when pH = 5) alongside reduced contact angle with water (∼43.1° on average). Consequently, ZFOCN demonstrates superior adsorption capacity ( q max  = 36.3 mg·g − 1 ), accelerated reaction kinetics (reach equilibrium within approximately 8 h) and heightened selectivity compared with CN and ZFO at pH = 5, which is better fitted by Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Notably, the cycle experiment results indicate that it retains high efficiency even after five cycles (∼80 %), showing remarkable recyclability. During the adsorption process, the underlying reaction mechanisms are identified as electrostatic interaction coupled with inner-sphere surface complexation predominantly attributed to Zn–O and Fe–O bonds. Thus, this study not only introduces an effective strategy for fabricating novel magnetic adsorbent but also offers fresh insights into eliminating U(VI), contributing significantly to environmental preservation and sustainable advancement.

Nanopore detection of guanine derivatives based on vacancy G-quadruplex DNA

Tong Ren,Zhen Feng,Fang Jiang,Xingtong Liu,Tingting Chen,Yanli Guo,Lei Tian,Xiao-Feng Kang,Fujun Yao

Guanine and its derivatives play fundamental roles in many biological processes and their abnormal changes are closely related to diseases. Thus, accurate and sensitive detection of them is beneficial for the early diagnosis and clinical medicine. Herein, a novel nanopore-based sensor is proposed to detection guanine and its derivatives by using a vacancy G-quadruplex (vG4) probe. In this design, the incomplete G-tetrad in vG4 probe can be filled in by guanine derivatives through Hoogsteen hydrogen bond interactions, resulting in stabilization of the G-quadruplex. Based on the different electronic signals between vG4 probe and its binding complexes, the nanopore sensor was able to achieve the detection of six guanine derivatives, including 2΄-dG, Guanine, Guanosine, GMP, GDP and GTP. To demonstrate the analytical performance of the method, a guanine analogue drug was determined as model analyte. The detection limit of acyclovir was 0.0061 μM (3 σ / k ), with a linear range of 0.01 μM – 0.1 μM. This sensing strategy offers a new pathway for label-free detection of nucleobases and derivatives.

Probing charge transfer of NiCo2O4/g-C3N4 photocatalyst for hydrogen production

Songyu Yang,Kailin Wang,Zhen Wu,Yan Wu

Quantum dots/two-dimensional (0D/2D) semiconductor photocatalysts demonstrate wide solar light absorption region and high charge transfer efficiency. However, the relation between the interfacial electric field and the charge transfer during the photocatalytic hydrogen production process is still unclear. Here, we construct NiCo 2 O 4 quantum dots (QDs) and NiCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) anchored with 2D g-C 3 N 4 (CN) to form NiCo 2 O 4 -QDs/CN and NiCo 2 O 4 -NPs/CN heterojunctions. The hydrogen production rate of CN loaded with NiCo 2 O 4 QDs is about 3 times higher than that of CN loaded with NiCo 2 O 4 NPs. The electric field intensity at the NiCo 2 O 4 -QDs/CN interface is calculated to be about 15,600 V cm −2 , about 9 times higher than that of NiCo 2 O 4 -NPs/CN, which could effectively drive the electrons of CN to flow toward NiCo 2 O 4 QDs, promoting photocarriers separation and hence greatly improving the photocatalytic performance. This work provides a method to understand the relationship between interfacial electric field strength and photogenerated charges of heterostructure photocatalysts.

Electrochemical Sensing of Acetaminophen Based on CuO/CNTs/g-C3N4 Composite

Shengbao Zhou,Yuehuan Yuan,Chun Zhao,Feifei Zhang,Zonghua Wang

This study investigates the application of a copper oxide/carbon nanotubes/carbon nitride(CuO/CNTs/g-C3N4) composite as electrode material for acetaminophen detection. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical behavior of acetaminophen was assessed via cyclic voltammetry and square wave volammetry methods. The synergistic effects of CuO, g-C3N4 and CNTs enhance electron transfer, facilitating the conversion of irreversible oxidation processes into reversible redox events. The CuO/CNTs/g-C3N4 sensing electrode exhibited a significantly stronger redox peak signal, reflecting improved catalytic performance for acetaminophen detection. The sensor demonstrated a linear detection range of 0.02–0.1 and 1–120 μmol l−1, with a detection limit of 5.89 nmol l−1. The results affirm that the CuO/CNTs/g-C3N4 sensing electrode provides robust reproducibility and stability for the determination of acetaminophen.

Recyclable G-quadruplex-driven hydrogel electrolyte for interface-compatible sustainable supercapacitors

Xuming Liu,Yingang Ma,Shuang Chen,Hui Wang,Xin Liu,Qin Zhang

Sustainable hydrogel-based supercapacitors are emerging as promising options for safe and green energy storage solutions, but suffer from low energy density and non-recyclability. Herein, a G-quadruplex-driven hydrogel electrolyte with recyclability and ion channels is successfully designed and applied to construct interface-compatible sustainable supercapacitors. The G-quadruplex-driven supramolecular network with ion channels not only enables hydrogel electrolytes to achieve high ionic conductivity, but also imparts thermally activated reversible regulation of network structure for the construction of interface-compatible supercapacitors. The G-quadruplex-driven hydrogel supercapacitors possess a high specific capacitance of 207.1 mF cm −2 and an energy density of 156.5 μW cm −2 at 0.386 mW cm −2 . More importantly, the G-quadruplex-driven hydrogel electrolyte demonstrates excellent recyclability. The reconstructed hydrogel electrolytes and supercapacitors maintain comprehensive properties similar to those of the original materials. This strategy for the G-quadruplex-driven recyclable hydrogel electrolyte offers valuable insights into sustainable energy materials and energy storage devices.

Guanine Amine Derivatives Promote Forming a Base-Vacancy-G Quadruplex Structure

Baoxia Liang,Jiayi Zhu,Huajun Yu,Jian Wu,Fen Ouyang,Yan Liu

G-quadruplex (G4) structures are important in both biological and medical fields. A unique G4 type containing G vacancies allowing stabilization by guanine or guanine derivatives is widely used in the treatment of diseases, such as cancer. However, the identification of ligands with suitable affinities and specificities for G4 structures remains challenging. This study investigated the assisting effect of guanine derivatives in the formation of G-vacancy G4 structures. Focusing on the EAD2 sequence, we designed EAD2 sequences with one or two missing G bases. Circular dichroism (CD) assays revealed negligible impact of guanine and its derivatives on intact EAD2 structures but notable alterations in single-G-base-deficient EAD2 sequences. The formation of G4 structures in the EAD2 sequence lacking two G bases was difficult, even with the assistance of guanine derivatives. Moreover, experimental results demonstrated that the guanine derivatives M2 had better auxiliary effects on base-deficient sequences than other compounds, which may be due to the enhanced pairing capability of G4 caused by M2. Lastly, the experiment demonstrates that the hemin/G4 DNAzyme-catalyzed ABTS confirmed the auxiliary role of the guanine derivatives in the formation of G4 in G base-deficient sequences. Overall, the findings indicated the significant impact of G base deficiency on G4 assembly, with the guanine derivative M2 effectively aiding stable G4 formation in G base-deficient sequences.

Rationalizing notable hole scavenger effects in g-C3N4-catalyzed H2O2 photosynthesis

Fan Wu,Yukun Ma,Lijing Fan,Shaohua Chen,Jieyi Shen,Yanxin Chen,Pengxin Liu

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a versatile and environmentally friendly oxidant whose industrial production has potentially more sustainable routes. Photocatalyzed H 2 O 2 generation represents a mild and efficient alternative, utilizing solar energy to reduce oxygen. However, how the photooxidation half reactions of hole scavengers affect the overall catalytic performances is largely overlooked. Here, we report that photooxidation half reactions are the real rate-limiting steps and that the choice of hole scavengers vitally affects the overall production rate of H 2 O 2 . The H 2 O 2 formation kinetic constants for 12 hole scavengers are compared with their electrooxidation potentials, calculated orbital energies, and energy gaps. No general correlation is found. Several possibilities are proposed, including the influences of different surface adsorption and surface reaction pathways. Our finding suggests that in practice, it is difficult to choose the right half reaction based on intuition or experiences with other systems. A case-by-case study is needed.
