Pd@PdBOx heterostructure with strong electronic interaction to promote C─H bond activation for glycerol oxidation reaction

Zhenyu Li,Kunhong Jiang,Yue Yang,Yijing Pian,Huizhen Liu,Zexuan Zheng,Xiyang Wang,Subhajit Jana,Jiefei Li,Zhuoyuan Ma,Xiaoyun Qiao,Xiaoxin Zou,Xuelu Ma,Bin Zhang,Haibin Chu,Yimin A. Wu

Glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) represents an economical pathway for transforming renewable feedstock to value-added chemicals. However, the inertness of C(sp 3 )─H bonds of glycerol and intermediates results in the high energy barrier of the dehydrogenation step, relating to poor product selectivity at high glycerol conversion. Here, a carbon nanotube–supported PdBO x @Pd heterostructure catalyst (PdBO x @Pd/CNTs) was synthesized in which in situ–exsoluted PdBO x clusters covalently covered Pd nanoparticles, thus yielding strong electronic interaction between Pd nanoparticles and PdBO x clusters. The strong electronic interaction in PdBO x @Pd/CNTs induces the hybridization between Pd(d), B(s, p), and O(s, p) atom orbits, optimizing the adsorption of reactants and intermediates, thus enhancing the activity for the GOR. The density functional theory calculation result reveals that the strong electronic interaction in PdBO x @Pd/CNTs facilitates the hydrogen transfer in the primary C─H bond of the CH 2 OHCHOHCH 2 O* intermediate, thus reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step and improving glyceric acid selectivity toward the GOR.

Electrodeposited Ternary Metal (Oxy)Hydroxide Achieves Highly Efficient Alkaline Water Electrolysis Over 1000 h Under Industrial Conditions

Chunfa Liu,Haoyun Bai,Jinxian Feng,Keyu An,Lun Li,Zhichao Yu,Lulu Qiao,Di Liu,Shuyang Peng,Hongchao Liu,Hui Pan

Large-scale green hydrogen production technology, based on the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy, relies heavily on non-precious metal oxygen evolution reactions (OER) electrocatalysts with high activity and stability under industrial conditions (6 M KOH, 60°C–80°C) at large current density. Here, we construct Fe and Co co-incorporated nickel (oxy)hydroxide (Fe 2.5 Co 2.5 Ni 10 O y H z @NFF) via a multi-metal electrodeposition, which exhibits outstanding OER performance (overpotential: 185 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 ). Importantly, an overwhelming stability for more than 1100 h at 500 mA cm −2 under industrial conditions is achieved. Our combined experimental and computational investigation reveals the surface-reconstructed γ-NiOOH with a high valence state is the active layer, where the optimal (Fe, Co) co-incorporation tunes its electronic structure, changes the potential determining step, and reduces the energy barrier, leading to ultrahigh activity and stability. Our findings demonstrate a facile way to achieve an electrocatalyst with high performance for the industrial production of green hydrogen.

Hydrophilic-modified Al@polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene/h-BN nanofibrous membrane with Janus wettability for human thermal management

Xihui Cheng,Pengcheng Wang,Jiwei Li,Na Wang

In the field of human thermal comfort management, the development of functional textiles plays a critical role in enhancing human health and energy efficiency. Although significant progress has been made in human thermal management textiles, the construction of radiative cooling textiles with superior wearing comfort remains a considerable challenge. In this work, we present a trilayer-structured fabric composed of an electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene/hexagonal boron nitride (PVDF-HFP/h-BN) nanofibrous membrane (NFM) as the underlying layer, a magnetron sputtered aluminum (Al) film as the intermediate layer, and a sprayed JF-6011 coating as the upper layer. The obtained composite JF-Al 20 @P/h-BN 7.5 NFM features a well-regulated micro-nano porous structure and distinctive optical properties, achieving a solar reflectance of 94.33 % and an atmospheric window emissivity of 92.63 %. Under a solar irradiance of approximately 950 W/m 2 , the skin simulator covered with the JF-Al 20 @P/h-BN 7.5 NFM showed temperature reductions of 13.5, 13.3, and 8 °C compared to those covered with commercial cotton, nylon, and polyester fabrics, respectively. Additionally, the composite NFM possesses unidirectional moisture transport capabilities while maintaining excellent air permeability (331.75 mm/s) and moisture vapor transmission rate (7.98 kg/m 2 /D). This study provides valuable insights into the design of thermally comfortable textiles for high-temperature environments.

Advantages of Porous H-ZSM-22 Zeolite for Catalyzing Oleic Acid Isomerization: High Selectivity and Regeneration Stability

Ge Pengyu,Liu Xiyu,Li Xincheng,Fan Mingming,Zhang Pingbo

In this study, highly crystalline ZSM-22 zeolite with a TON topology was synthesized via a seed–template co-assisted hydrothermal method and subsequently modified with low-concentration NH₄Cl to introduce Brønsted acid sites. The characterization of the catalyst revealed its well-defined rod-like crystals (2–5 μm), one-dimensional straight channels (0.46 × 0.57 nm), microporous surface area of 210 m 2 ·g −1 , Brønsted-to-Lewis (B/L) acid ratio of 0.45, and excellent thermal stability. Under optimized reaction conditions (270 °C, 3 h, 6 wt% catalyst), the catalyst achieved a 95.01% conversion of oleic acid and a 77.72% yield of isostearic acid. The confinement effect of the 1D channels effectively suppressed undesired side reactions, offering significantly enhanced selectivity compared to commercial zeolites such as ZSM-5. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that calcination at 550 °C successfully removed coke deposits and restored catalyst activity. After five regeneration cycles, the conversion and yield remained at 89.50% and 72.80%, respectively, with less than 6% loss. These findings provide theoretical and technical guidance for the high-value catalytic transformation of biomass-derived fatty acids. Graphical H-ZSM-22 catalyst with good reusability

Tuning the Local H-rich Microenvironment by Armorial Chromic Oxide for Robust Ampere-Level Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Fuli Wang,Xintong Wei,Shumin Cheng,Denghao Ouyang,Guodong Li,Mirabbos Hojamberdiev,Bin Dong,Han Hu,Yongming Chai

Nickel sulfide (NiSx) catalysts typically suffer from sluggish kinetics and poor stability under ampere-level current densities in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To address this, we construct Cr2O3-embedded Ni7S6 nanowires on nickel foam (Ni7S6−Cr2O3/NF) with tailored work function differences. Operando analyses and theoretical calculations reveal that interfacial charge redistribution creates a hydrogen-rich microenvironment by accelerating water dissociation at electron-deficient Cr sites and optimizing H* adsorption at electron-rich Ni sites. The catalyst achieves an industrially relevant current density of −1000 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 369 mV and maintains stability for 1000 h due to the protective Cr2O3 layer. Furthermore, the assembled anion exchange membrane electrolyzer operates at only 1.86 V to deliver 1000 mA cm−2 and remains stable for 500 h. This work highlights interface engineering of local microenvironments as an effective strategy for developing industrial grade electrocatalysts for alkaline HER.

Heshun Jing,Qingtai Xie,Huijuan Su,Yuqi Zhai,Xun Sun,Baorong Duan,Lijun Zhao,Miao Zhang,Caixia Qi,Libo Sun

The research and progress of noble metal catalysts possessing good stability and extended service life holds significant importance in enhancing catalytic efficiency, reducing enterprise costs, and fostering sustainable social development. Here, a hollow magnetic h-Au/PDA@PDA@Fe 3 O 4 catalyst with a double-layer PDA structure was prepared to optimize the stability of gold nanoparticles (NPs) using for the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction. The research indicates that, despite the initial activity of h-Au/PDA@PDA@Fe 3 O 4 , with a mass-normalized rate ( k’ ) of 176.10 s −1 ·g Au -1 and a Turn Over Frequency (TOF) of 1757 h −1 , being smaller than h-Au/PDA@Fe 3 O 4 with a single-layer structure ( k’ = 461.76 s −1 ·g Au -1 , TOF = 6387 h −1 ), h-Au/PDA@PDA@Fe 3 O 4 exhibits significantly superior stability compared to h-Au/PDA@Fe 3 O 4 . After undergoing 12 cycles of use, the conversion rate of h-Au/PDA@PDA@Fe 3 O 4 decreased by only 4.3 %. After cyclic reaction, the conversion rate of h-Au/PDA@Fe 3 O 4 decreased by as much as 64.8 %. The distinctive hollow double-layer structure of h-Au/PDA@PDA@Fe 3 O 4 , along with the interaction between Au and PDA, contributes significantly to its exceptional activity and stability. The research presented in this paper offers valuable insights and guidance for the suitable construction and industrial application of gold-based nano catalyst with good activity and cyclic stability.

Blocking dopamine receptor 2 decreases gastrin levels in H. pylori-infected mice through increasing gastric somatostatin content

Qianying Shen,Yue-Yue Zhou,Yan-Lin Wang,Yao Qi,Dong-Bo Lian,Zhe-Hong Li,Meng-Fei Chen,Xiao-Li Zhang,Yue Zhang,Jin Song,Li-Fei Zheng,Jin-Xia Zhu

Long-term infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) leads to elevated serum gastrin levels, which are closely related to gastric cancer. Eradication of H. pylori to treat the high gastrin levels is increasingly challenged by antibiotic resistance. Dopamine (DA) receptor 1 (D1R) is expressed on G cells in the gastric antrum. Parietal cells produce DA, which inhibits somatostatin (SOM) release through D2R on D cells in the gastric mucosa. Whether targeted intervention in DRs can improve high gastrin levels after H. pylori infection remains to be explored. In this study, human gastric tissue, H. pylori-infected mice, D1R and D2R knockout mice, RT‒qPCR, ELISA, IHC, Western Blot, HE staining and ex vivo incubation of gastric mucosae were used. We found that H. pylori infection destroyed the mitochondria of parietal cells and reduced DA content in the gastric mucosa at 10 weeks after infection. Moreover, gastrin-positive cell numbers and serum gastrin levels were increased. D1R, but not D2R, was observed in G cells. DA promoted gastric gastrin secretion. Interestingly, both D1- and D2-like agonists mimicked the effect of DA on the gastrin secretion, which was antagonized by their antagonists. Blocking D2R with domperidone or knocking out D2R resulted in decreased gastrin-positive cell numbers and gastrin levels but increased SOM levels at 10 weeks after H. pylori infection. Our findings highlight the key regulatory effect of D2R on gastrin secretion and elucidate the role of domperidone in reducing the elevated gastrin level associated with H. pylori infection.

Enhanced nitrate reduction by HPMC-stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron (H-NZVI): synthesis, characterization and reaction kinetics

Da Ma,Xusheng Li,Huian Zou,Yi Qian,Mengqi Li,Wenchuan Xu

Nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) was successfully stabilized by using hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC). Systematic characterization observations (including XRD, TEM, FTIR, and VSM), as well as settling performance, illustrated that, compared to bare nano zero-valent iron particles (NZVI), the dispersity and antioxidizability of HPMC-stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron particles (H-NZVI) were improved. Nitrate reduction efficiencies by using iron powder, NZVI, H-NZVI-5, H-NZVI-10, and H-NZVI-20 were examined, and the results showed that a moderate amount of HPMC in modification can help prevent the aggregation of NZVI and achieve high reduction efficiency. Excessive HPMC in preparation led to a decline in reduction efficiency. In addition, effects of initial pH, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and reaction temperatures on nitrate removal were studied. The results showed that the efficiency decreased with increases in initial pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations. However, the stabilized NZVI showed great superiority to bare NZVI, maintaining high activity even at basic pH or aerobic conditions. Pseudo first-order kinetics was applied to study nitrate reduction kinetics and confirmed to correlate well with experimental data. Through analysis of rate constants at different temperatures, the apparent activation energy for nitrate reduction by H-NZVI-10 was calculated to be approximately 15.18   kJ/mol. This study demonstrates that HPMC-stabilized NZVI can serve as a promising nanomaterial for enhancing nitrate reduction of nitrate.

Development of gradient cemented carbides with surface layers free of cubic phase via h-BN nitrogen source

Xu Xia,Chenyang Ma,Tianen Yang,Zhiyuan Ma,Yu Cao,Jiahuan He,Qiwen Zheng,Huaping Hong,Ji Xiong

This study investigates gradient cemented carbide with a cubic phase-free surface layer (CFL), commonly used as substrates for coated inserts to extend their service life. The tough gradient surface layer effectively prevents crack propagation, minimizing coating delamination and edge chipping. We propose using hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a non-cubic nitrogen source for fabricating gradient cemented carbide with cubic (W,Ti)C, as a replacement for traditional cubic nitrogen sources. By employing powder metallurgy, we successfully created gradient cemented carbide with a CFL derived from h-BN. We also analyze the mechanism of gradient structure formation and characterize the microstructure, elemental distribution, and mechanical properties of the novel materials. The results demonstrate the feasibility of producing gradient cemented carbides with a CFL when h-BN is used as the nitrogen source. The crystal orientations at the gradient boundary are randomly distributed, showing no abrupt interface between the surface layer and the interior. Notably, titanium (Ti) and boron (B) are nearly absent in the surface layer, while cobalt (Co) shows higher concentration compared to the interior. The use of h-BN facilitates a nearly homogeneous titanium distribution in the subsurface zone, contrasting with the clustering seen when traditional cubic TiN is employed as the nitrogen source. Additionally, the thickness of the gradient surface layer can be effectively controlled by adjusting the h-BN levels, increasing with higher h-BN content in the raw materials. However, excessive h-BN addition facilitates abnormal WC phase growth in cemented carbides, and negatively affects transverse rupture strength despite the toughening effects of the cubic phase-free layer. Increased h-BN content also promotes the formation of TiB phases, which enhances the hardness of the cemented carbide.

Solidification performance and mechanism of C-S-H gel for Pb(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II)

Baomin Wang,Weigao Ding,Chengcheng Fan,Fei Liu,Wenxin Lu,Haoxiang Yang

C-S-H gel is a complex cementitious system, and the properties present significant difference with various Ca/Si ratios. The immobilization mechanism of three heavy metals in C-S-H gel at various Ca/Si ratios was investigated in this work from the prospect of the physical adsorption and chemical immobilization. Results showed that higher Ca/Si ratios can result in an increase in silicon chain polymerization, and lower BET specific area, and C-S-H gel with various Ca/Si ratios showed the excellent immobilization for heavy metals. Pb(II) and Zn(II) can form hydroxyl complex polyhedra in C-S-H under strongly alkaline environments, and increase the silicon chain polymerization degree similar to the doping of C-S-H gel by Al. However, Cd(II) was immobilized in the C-S-H gel with the formation of a solid solution under the action of ion exchange with Ca(II), rather than in the form of hydroxyl complex polyhedral and cadmium hydroxide coprecipitates. The highest adsorption capacity of Pb(II) was realized in C-S-H gel with a Ca/Si molar ratio of 0.9, reaching 95.6006 mg/g. Pb(II) was mainly immobilized in C-S-H gel via physical and chemical adsorption, and the effect of chemical adsorption tended to be significant as the Ca/Si molar ratio increased. And the formation of Pb 8 Ca(Si 2 O 7 ) 3 can be detected in C-S-H gel with a higher Ca/Si molar ratio.

Study of Nacre-like h-BN/waterborne polyurethane nanocomposite with high-thermal, mechanical and water resistance properties

Xiaoyan Gao,Nisar Ali,Meng Zhao,Guang Hu,Adnan Khan,Dandan Min,Lijing Zhang,Lingli Ni,Mohammed Albahri

Nacre-like polymer nanocomposites have become fascinating material nowadays because of their exceptional mechanical property. In this study, nacre-like waterborne polyurethane/hexagonal boron nitride (WPU/h-BN) nanocomposite with high-thermal, mechanical and water resistance has been successfully prepared via mechanical blending method. Owing to strong interfacial interactions and a nacre-like structure, the WPU/h-BN nanocomposite with a loading amount of 30 wt% exhibits excellent tensile strength of 27.3 MPa, compared with 4.16 MPa for pure WPU. Additionally, it has an exceptional maximum decomposition temperature of 443 °C and an outstanding water absorption ratio of 8.1 %. This approach of adopting h-BN and WPU to construct nacre-like structure may provide a new path for preparing high performance WPU strategies.

Synergistic Pt/Co(OH)2/PTI enhances H2O dissociation and H* adsorption for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution

Yali Niu,Rui Yao,Shuhui Fan,Jinping Li,Guang Liu

Anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWE) are promising for clean hydrogen production. However, the high energy barriers associated with water adsorption and dissociation combined with the high adsorption energy of hydrogen intermediates (H*) in alkaline environment result in slow kinetics for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To tackle this, we report a catalyst comprising Pt nanoparticles loaded on Co(OH) 2 /PTI nanosheets (Pt/Co(OH) 2 /PTI) for efficient alkaline HER at high current densities. Operando characterization indicates that Co(OH) 2 promotes H 2 O adsorption and dissociation, while the Pt nanoparticles optimize H* adsorption energy, enabling preferential H* adsorption at the Pt site to facilitate H 2 generation and desorption. Furthermore, the ultra-thin poly (triazine imide) (PTI) support prevents the Pt nanoparticles aggregation, thereby enhancing catalyst stability. As a result, the synergistic Pt/Co(OH) 2 /PTI achieves superior HER performance, demanding an overpotential of merely 7 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and just 220 mV to drive 1 A cm −2 , and it maintains stable for over 220 h under the condition of 1 A cm −2 . Additionally, the electrolyzer assembled using Pt/Co(OH) 2 /PTI as the cathode demonstrates stable operation for 200 h at 0.5 A cm −2 under 70 °C, highlighting its strong potential for industrial applications.
