A sensitive and selective molecularly imprinted polymer-graphene oxide (MIP@GO) electrochemical sensor was fabricated for the determination of naringin and neohesperidin in "Quzhiqiao" (immature fruit of Citrus paradisi 'Changshan Huyou'). The MIP@GO was prepared by electropolymerization using naringin and neohesperidin as templates. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited linear ranges of 0.1–50 μM for naringin and 0.2–60 μM for neohesperidin, with low detection limits of 0.03 μM and 0.05 μM, respectively. The imprinting factors for naringin and neohesperidin were 3.8 and 2.5, respectively. The sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity, reproducibility (RSD < 3.6 %), stability (>94.5 % retention after 30 days), and reusability (>92.8 % retention after 10 cycles). The MIP@GO sensor was successfully applied to Fructus aurantii samples, with recoveries ranging from 95.5 % to 104.2 %. This work presents a rapid, cost-effective, and highly sensitive approach for the quality control of Quzhiqiao and related citrus products.

Glyphosate (Gly) residues in agricultural products have a serious health risk, so it is urgent to seek a sensitive and convenient method for recognizing Gly residues in food. In this study, we proposed an electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (EC-SERS) sensor of polyaniline/reduced graphene oxide/Ag/Cu (PANI/RGO/Ag/Cu) film to detect Gly residues. The EC-SERS sensor of PANI/RGO/Ag/Cu film had a large specific surface area, which could increase the binding sites of cu 2+ /Gly clathrates for boosting specifically its SERS signal. Moreover, Ag/Cu nanoparticles on the surface of film could effectively increase the differential pulse voltammetry signal and SERS signal of Gly molecules. The limit of detection of EC-SERS sensor to Gly could reach 1.9 nM. In addition, the EC-SERS sensor we prepared could also sensitively identify Gly residues on fresh fruit peels. The PANI/RGO/Ag/Cu film we proposed in this paper has great potential for selective and accuracy detecting Gly residues in agricultural products.

Fruits and vegetables are highly susceptible to storage conditions; therefore, the long-term preservation of fresh produce without cold-chain storage remains a remarkable challenge to food security. Herein, we synthesis a multifunctional, edible coating based on sodium alginate (SA) reinforced with nanocellulose fibers (NCFs) and chitosan (CS). The results showed that the monomers were crosslinked by hydrogen, ester bonds, and electrostatic interactions in the composite coating. Meanwhile, SA/NCFs/CS exhibited excellent mechanical properties (elongation: 101 %; tensile strength: 88.92 MPa; toughness: 6.59 MJ/m 3 ). Additionally, the composite coating displayed excellent antioxidant (96.33 %), antibacterial (99.02 %) and biocompatibility (99.99 %). The preservation experiment showed that, at 4 °C, the composite coating could extend the shelf life of bananas and strawberries to 12 days. It thus facilitates the long-term preservation of various fruit types and reduces the costs associated with cold-chain transportation. Thus, this study offers a novel perspective for developing multifunctional, edible preservation materials, providing a sustainable and effective alternative to traditional cold-chain-dependent storage methods.

With the escalating focus on sustainable food packaging, the concurrent demands for outstanding mechanical robustness and effective photodynamic antibacterial activity in materials designed for fruit preservation have yet to be adequately fulfilled. This study first engineered an innovative food packaging nanocomposite (CPBI) through strategic integration of BiOBr/I heterojunction within a polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose (PVA/CMC) matrix, integrating photodynamic antibacterial functionality and ultra-high mechanical strength for perishable fruit preservation. The incorporation of BiOBr/I into the natural-polymer network achieved remarkable pathogen inactivation efficiencies of 97.4 % against Staphylococcus aureus and 93.8 % against Escherichia coli O157:H7 via ROS-mediated membrane peroxidation. Simultaneously, the CPBI film displayed superior mechanical properties (tensile strength: 240.1 MPa, fracture strain: 260 %). In practical storage, this film successfully extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes to 20 days, demonstrating its highly effective fruit preservation capability. This strategy advances the evolution of intelligent packaging solutions, simultaneously addressing the tripartite challenges of material sustainability, postharvest preservation, and foodborne pathogen mitigation.

Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris greatly affects the quality of fruit juice products. In this study, we propose a new strategy that combines an aptamer and antibody with magnetic nanoparticles and fluorescence detection to effectively detect A. acidoterrestris in fruit juices. The aptamer-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNP-APTs) were prepared for specific separation of target bacteria, and the antibody-stabilized quantum dots (QDs-Abs) were synthesized for fluorescence detection. For reverse detection of the target bacteria, we measured the residual quantum dot fluorescence signal in the system. The detection limit of the established method was 10 3 CFU/mL, and the entire detection process was completed within 90 min. The results demonstrate that the constructed MNP-APTs capture probe and QDs-Abs recognition probe could be successfully applied to the rapid separation and detection of A. acidoterrestris in apple juice, which provide a new idea for the detection of contaminated substances in juice production.

Summary Stone cells are often present in pear fruit, and they can seriously affect the fruit quality when present in large numbers. The plant growth regulator NAA, a synthetic auxin, is known to play an active role in fruit development regulation. However, the genetic mechanisms of NAA regulation of stone cell formation are still unclear. Here, we demonstrated that exogenous application of 200 μ M NAA reduced stone cell content and also significantly decreased the expression level of PbrNSC encoding a transcriptional regulator. PbrNSC was shown to bind to an auxin response factor, PbrARF13. Overexpression of PbrARF13 decreased stone cell content in pear fruit and secondary cell wall (SCW) thickness in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. In contrast, knocking down PbrARF13 expression using virus-induced gene silencing had the opposite effect. PbrARF13 was subsequently shown to inhibit PbrNSC expression by directly binding to its promoter, and further to reduce stone cell content. Furthermore, PbrNSC was identified as a positive regulator of PbrMYB132 through analyses of co-expression network of stone cell formation-related genes. PbrMYB132 activated the expression of gene encoding cellulose synthase ( PbrCESA4b/7a/8a) and lignin laccase ( PbrLAC5 ) binding to their promotors. As expected, overexpression or knockdown of PbrMYB132 increased or decreased stone cell content in pear fruit and SCW thickness in Arabidopsis transgenic plants. In conclusion, our study shows that the ‘PbrARF13-PbrNSC-PbrMYB132’ regulatory cascade mediates the biosynthesis of lignin and cellulose in stone cells of pear fruit in response to auxin signals and also provides new insights into plant SCW formation.

Two novel pectin polysaccharides were extracted from purple passion fruits ( Passiflora edulia Sims) peel by hot-water extraction (PFSP60) and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UPFSP60), their structural characteristics, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects were preliminary investigated. The results revealed that the monosaccharide compositions of both polysaccharides mainly include galacturonic acid, glucose, xylose, arabinose, galactose and rhamnose. Methylation analysis indicated that the main linkage types of PFSP60 included 1,4-linked-GalA, 1,4-linked-Glc, 1,4-linked-Xyl and 1-linked-Gal in a molar ratio of 1.02:1.00:0.36:0.13. The glycosidic linkage types of UPFSP60 included 1,4-linked-GalA, 1,4-linked-Glc, 1,2-linked-Rha, 1,4-linked-Xyl and 1,3,6-linked-Gal in a molar ratio of 4.03:1.00:0.32:0.31:0.29. The DPPH radical, ABTS radical, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide anion scavenging activities of PFSP60 and UPFSP60 enhanced in a dose-dependent manner. In LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages, PFSP60 and UPFSP60 could inhibit secretion amounts of pro-inflammatory factors (NO, IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6) and down-regulated gene expressions. However, the polysaccharides extracted with the assistance of ultrasonication showed stronger antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The results suggested that ultrasound treatment might be an effective approach to obtain pectin polysaccharides with lower molecular weight and stronger antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. These results also indicated that passion fruit peel polysaccharides have potential application prospect in functional foods and medicine industry.

The deterioration degree of pomegranate husk, aroma components and antioxidant contents of pomegranate juice have important effects on postharvest storage quality and vary among cultivars. At the present study, ‘Tunisia soft seed’, ‘Jingpitian’ and ‘Lishanhong’ cultivars from Shaanxi, China was used as raw materials. They were stored at 4 ± 0.5 °C and 85–90% relative humidity for 90 d which aimed to elucidate storability differences. Both husk changes and storage quality were monitored. Our results showed that ‘Tunisia soft seed’ maintained a good microstructure in husk and possessed a high value of soluble solids/titratable acid ratio and high contents of antioxidants (total phenols , total flavonoids , total anthocyanins , vitamin C) but suffered from high moisture and volatile aroma compounds losses. ‘Jingpitian’ exhibited lower moisture and aroma compounds losses, but showed significant husk browning, micro-cracks widening, lenticels blocking and wax layer disintegrating. ‘Lishanhong’ showed similar fruit quality characteristics to ‘jingpitian’. These findings will contribute to elucidating the appearance change, microstructure and fruit quality differences among cultivars in postharvest pomegranates during cold storage and providing help for enterprises to discriminate and select varieties suitable for fresh sales or storage.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of ultrasound frequencies from 18 to 90 kHz on the extraction of anthocyanin from strawberry fruit by using an approach of modified ultrasound-assisted extraction (MUAE) that was based on a frequency search device with six extraction tanks controlled by a computer. According to the obtained optimal frequency of 62-64 kHz, the effects of other different process variables, such as treatment time, temperature, ultrasound power and solvent to solid ratio, on the extraction of anthocyanin were also studied in comparison with heat assisted extraction (HAE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The obtained results showed that the maximum yield of 796.9 μg/g of anthocyanin was obtained at the optimized conditions of ultrasound frequency of 62-64 kHz, solvent to solid ratio of 6 mL/g, ultrasound power of 120 W, temperature of 45°C and treatment time of 12 min with 55% ethanol as the solvent. The application of MUAE showed that anthocyanin yield increased by about 42% and 22% higher than that of HAE and UAE, respectively. These findings demonstrated MUAE is not only an effective and feasible method for extracting anthocyanin from strawberry fruit, but also promising for extracting active components from natural materials in industry.

Olea europaea L. (OEL) fruits play a significant role in the Mediterranean diet. OEL fruits contain abundant bioactive components and have been reported to possess potential antioxidant and xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibition effects. However, the active components for XOD inhibition effects and related mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the antioxidant activity of OEL fruits was assessed and showed a good effect on antioxidants. After that, the XOD inhibition effects of OEL fruits were investigated. The results indicated that OEL fruits also have a good impact on inhibiting XOD, with IC 50 values of 208.2 ± 1.58 μg/mL. Under the optimal experimental conditions, six potential XOD ligands in OEL fruits were screened out and three phenylethanol analogues were identified (hydroxytyrosol, 3,4-dihydroxy phenyl ethyl acetate, oleuropein). Compared to the inactivated group, 3,4-dihydroxy phenyl ethyl acetate had the highest affinity, indicating it might be the main component of the OEL fruits that inhibit XOD. Molecular docking results elucidated that the potential active components mainly form hydrogen bonds with XOD. The results showed that OEL fruits possessed potential antioxidant and XOD inhibitory effects and that the affinity ultrafiltration (UF) method is an effective method to screen potential ligands for XOD from natural products.

Yolk-shell magnetic ZIF-8@MOF-74 was synthesized via a facile method at room temperature. • Yolk-shell magnetic ZIF-8@MOF-74 based MSPE was optimized. • High specific surface area and hierarchical pores enhance MSPE performance. • MSPE-HPLC method developed for efficient BUs detection in fresh juices. • Greenness verified by ComplexGAPI index, aligning with green chemistry principles. Yolk-shell magnetic ZIF-8@MOF-74 was synthesized and utilized as a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for the detection of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) residues in freshly-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices. The fabrication of magnetic ZIF-8@MOF-74 was conducted under mild and simple conditions without high-temperature/pressure or energy-intensive equipment. With a large specific surface area (880.78 m 2 g −1 ) providing abundant adsorption sites, the mesoporous architecture (average pore size 2.57 nm) and yolk-shell structure of magnetic ZIF-8@MOF-74 enable efficient mass transfer, achieving equilibrium within 7 min as an MSPE adsorbent for BUs. The established analytical method demonstrates good linearity in the concentration range of 0.5–200 μg L −1 , with low limit of detection (LOD) between 0.1 and 0.3 μg L −1 . The recoveries of BUs in freshly-squeezed pear juice and tomato juice samples were in the range of 81%–114% and 102%–120%, respectively. Evaluation via the ComplexGAPI index confirms its environmental sustainability. Download: Download high-res image (118KB) Download: Download full-size image

Melatonin enhanced chilling tolerance and reduced chilling injury in cold-stored guava. • Melatonin preserved cell membrane integrity in cold-stored guava. • Melatonin enhanced ROS-scavenging ability of cold-stored guava. • Melatonin reduced ROS accumulation and membrane lipid peroxidation in guava. • Melatonin lowered activities of membrane lipid-degrading enzymes in cold-stored guava. Guava fruit is highly susceptible to chilling injury during low-temperature storage. Melatonin acts as an effective approach to mitigate chilling injury in fresh produce during cold storage. In this work, the effects of 100 μmol/L melatonin treatment on chilling injury and the metabolisms of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and membrane lipid in guava fruit during storage at 4 ºC were explored. The results indicated that, compared to the control group, the melatonin-treated guavas exhibited the lower chilling injury incidence and cell membrane permeability, along with lower levels of O 2 -. , H 2 O 2 , and MDA. Additionally, the treated fruit showed the enhanced activities of SOD, POD, CAT, and APX, higher contents of AsA, lycopene, and GSH, and higher levels of DPPH radical scavenging ability, and reducing power. Furthermore, melatonin application lowered the activities of lipase, LOX, and PLD, resulting in higher levels of phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylcholine, and USFAs, but lower levels of phosphatidic acid, and SFAs. Consequently, the indices of IUFA and U/S were also higher in the melatonin-treated guavas. Therefore, melatonin treatment mitigated chilling injury in cold-stored guavas through enhancing the ROS-scavenging system to reduce ROS generation and accumulation, as well as through inhibiting the activities of membrane lipid-degrading enzymes to maintain higher levels of phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylcholine, and USFAs, thereby preserving the integrity of cell membrane.
