A highly active and recyclable catalyst for the deposition of Au nanoparticles on the surface of polydopamine-functionalized poly(vinyl alcohol) macroporous beads was fabricated through the oxidative polymerization of dopamine and in-situ reduction route. The morphology and structure of PVA-PDA@Au beads were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray power diffraction and N 2 adsorption–desorption measurement. The as-prepared PVA-PDA@Au beads combined the advantages of PVA-PDA beads and Au NPs. PVA-PDA@Au beads exhibited enhanced catalytic activity towards the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of NaBH 4 with removal efficiency up to 99.5% in 5 min at an initial RhB concentration of 100 mg/L and a catalyst amount of 0.5 g/L. PVA-PDA@Au beads could be easily separated and recycled from the reaction system by simple filtration, and reused for the degradation of RhB in six consecutive cycles with a conversion of >99%. Moreover, the mechanism for the degradation of RhB by PVA-PDA@Au beads was proposed. In addition, the catalytic ability of PVA-PDA@Au beads was further studied to remove Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), in which approximately 100% TBBPA (initial concentration of 25 mg/L) was removed within 90 min. In practical application, RhB as a pollutant in river water was degraded rapidly by PVA-PDA@Au beads with removal efficiency higher than 94%. Thus, PVA-PDA@Au beads possessed high catalytic activity, fast reduction rate and good reusability as well as easy separation and simple preparation, endowing this catalyst with potential application prospect in the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants.

Anode performance is a key factor for power output and long-term stability of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). This is because it considerably influences biofilm growth and extracellular electron transfer (EET). In this study, carbon cloth (CC) was used as the anode substrate, and a hydrophilic, biocompatible, and highly conductive CC–PDA–rGO anode was synthesized by surface modification with polydopamine (PDA) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using an easy and facile solvent immersion method. The power density of the MFC with CC–PDA–rGO anode reached 2047 mW·m −2 , which was 6.1, 2.2, and 1.9 times greater than those of the CC, CC–PDA, and CC–rGO, respectively. The charge transfer resistance of the MFC prepared with the CC–PDA–rGO anode was ten-fold lower than that of the CC anode. Moreover, the EET was remarkably enhanced on the CC–PDA–rGO anode, and the electroactive biofilm of CC–PDA–rGO anode exhibited the highest cell viability. The CC–PDA–rGO anode achieved the highest cumulative total charge, which suggested that it had the best electron harvesting capacity. The foregoing can be attributed to the introduction of PDA and rGO onto the electrode surface. The PDA possesses superior hydrophilicity and excellent adhesive force for strong interaction with biofilm, whereas the rGO provides abundant electrochemically active sites to facilitate electron transfer from the biofilm to the anode. This work provides an easy and facile surface modification method for the development of high-performance MFC anode materials.

The local surface plasmon resonance effect of Au nanorods (AuNRs) can help improve the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Polydopamine (PDA), as a new electron transfer layer (ETL) modifier, has also attracted attention. Electron beam irradiation can further control the molecular structure and morphology of PDA and optimize its binding with ZnO. In this study, AuNRs with different aspect ratios (ARs) were prepared by the seed growth method. Then, the AuNRs with different ARs were selected to modify the ZnO ETL of PSCs based on the inverted structure of PTB7:PC 71 BM. The short current density ( J sc) of the long AuNR-modified solar cell (AR = 4.18) reached 10.81 mA/cm 2 , and the PCE reached 4.57%. The PDA/AuNR composite films before and after electron beam irradiation were further used to modify the ZnO ETL. The J sc and PCE of the PDA/AuNR composite-modified device increased to 11.97 mA/cm 2 and 4.75%, respectively. The PCE of the device with 50 kGy-irradiated PDA/AuNR composite modifier reached 5.66%, which was 1.59 times of the device without PDA/AuNRs.

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is extensively employed in the realm of wastewater treatment. However, conventional synthesis methods involve inherent risks of nZVI oxidation and aggregation, resulting in challenging recovery and potential waste generation. To address these concerns and improve stability, nano zero-valent nickel (nZVNi) was employed as a modifier for nZVI. The modified nZVNi/nZVI was successfully blended with polydopamine (PDA)-modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) powder, enabling the preparation of a novel hydrophilic composite membrane termed nZVNi/nZVI-PDA@PVDF (NFPP). PDA played a crucial role in effectively immobilizing nZVI particles and preventing their oxidation and aggregation. Scanning electron microscopy was used to confirm the consistent dispersion of nZVNi/nZVI particles both on the surface of the membrane and within its pores. Moreover, the NFPP membrane exhibited excellent performance in removing Cr(VI), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 75.65 mg/g. The presence of PDA endowed the NFPP membrane with a plentiful supply of hydroxyl and amino groups, enhancing its hydrophilicity, antioxidation properties, and loading capacity for nZVNi/nZVI. Additionally, the NFPP membrane demonstrated remarkable resistance to interference under different pH and ionic conditions. The removal of Cr(VI) by the NFPP membrane followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Furthermore, the NFPP membrane retained good performance and stability in Cr(VI) removal even after undergoing five cycles. This study indicates that the highly efficient NFPP composite material holds promising potential for application as a functional material in heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber-based flexible piezoelectric sensors are recognized for their applicability in wearable electronic devices, personal health monitoring, and motion detection. This research explores the impact of dual fillers, MXene and polydopamine-modified zinc oxide (PDA@ZnO), on the characteristics of PAN-based piezoelectric composite nanofiber films, including planar zigzag conformation content, dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and mechanical properties. By integrating PDA@ZnO as a filler, PAN/MXene/PDA@ZnO-5 (PMPO) piezoelectric sensors were developed, showcasing enhanced piezoelectric sensing capabilities. These sensors achieved a sensitivity of 28.56 V/N across a broad linear range, with superior mechanical stability and durability across 3000 loading–unloading cycles, and exhibited swift response and recovery times of 49 ms and 40 ms, respectively. Furthermore, their unique fiber structure and flexibility, when interfaced with the human body, enable the detection of minute physiological movements and the conversion of varied motions into distinct voltage outputs. Thus, these sensors offer considerable promise for applications in human health monitoring and motion posture correction.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an irreversible degenerative disease of articular cartilage that commonly occurs in the middle-aged and elderly people. However, effective intervention for early and middle-stage OA is still limited due to its complex and multifactorial nature. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the inflammatory microenvironment are considered to play crucial roles in the occurrence and development of OA. Here, a novel HPB@LA@PDA nanoplatform is designed, which utilizes the mimicking enzyme activity of hollow prussian blue (HPB) nanozymes and antioxidant activity of lipoic acid (LA), to synergistically scavenge ROS and remodel the OA microenvironment. HPB@LA@PDA was firstly synthesized and the characterizations were confirmed by TEM, DLS, XPS, FTIR, UV–Vis, and XRD methods. It exhibited excellent multienzyme-like (SOD, GPx, CAT and POD-like) activities and antioxidant activities, converting •O 2 − , H 2 O 2 , •OH and reactive nitrogen species into harmless products. Importantly, at both the cellular and animal levels, we found HPB@LA@PDA could effectively scavenge excess ROS, protect against ROS-induced oxidative stress, apoptosis and ferroptosis, and ameliorate mitochondrial dysfunction, reduce inflammatory expression, and inhibit macrophage polarization in the chondrocytes. Finally, the results of in vivo study demonstrated that HPB@LA@PDA exhibited good biocompatibility and excellent therapeutic efficacy in the OA rat model. Micro-CT scaning, histopathological and immunofluorescence staining and western blotting analysis confirmed that HPB@LA@PDA attenuated the progression of OA by way of scavenging reactive oxygen species and remodelling the inflammatory microenvironment. The combination of drug and nanoenzyme vehicle offers a promising prospect for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases, including OA.

A facile and versatile approach for the preparation of super-hydrophilic, excellent antifouling and hemocompatibility membranes had been developed through the generation in situ of bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) microspheres on PVDF membranes. SEM images showed that the PDA microspheres were uniformly dispersed on the upper surface and the lower surface of the modified membranes. And there were a great number of PDA microspheres immobilized on the cross-section, but the interconnected pores structure was not destroyed. These facts indicated the existence of membrane micro-reactor effect for the whole membrane structure. Considering the remarkable improvement of hydrophilicity, antifouling properties, and permeation fluxes, we also proposed the cluster phenolic hydroxyl effect for the PVDF/PDA hybrid membranes. And the cluster phenolic hydroxyl effect can be ascribed to the all directions distributed phenolic hydroxyl groups on the whole membrane structure. Besides, the self-driven filtration experiments showed the great wetting ability and permeability of the PVDF/PDA hybrid membranes in filtration process without any external pressure. This implied the existence of accelerating self-driven force after the water flow flowed into the internal of membranes, which contributed to the increase of water flow velocity. All the three aspects were in favor of the enhancement of hydrophilicity, antifouling properties and permeability of the modified membranes. Moreover, the conventional filtration tests, oil/water emulsion filtration tests and protein adsorption tests were also carried out to discuss the practical applications of PVDF/PDA hybrid membranes. And the hemocompatibility of the modified membranes was also proved to enhance greatly through the hemolysis tests and platelet adhesion tests, indicating that the membranes were greatly promising in biomedical applications. The strategy of material modification reported here is substrate-independent and can be extended to other substrate materials, and allows the development of novel functional membranes through secondary treatments.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, widely used for their stability, face limitations due to the hardly adjustable pore size in nanoscale and inherent hydrophobicity. To address this, we proposed a co-deposition method incorporating dopamine (DA), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles with glutaraldehyde cross-linking for precise regulation of pore size and hydrophilicity in PVDF hollow fiber membranes. Notably, the pore diameter reduced from 119.0 ± 3.55 nm to 18.4 ± 0.36 nm, while the contact angle decreased from 107.7° to 40.9°. This simultaneous regulation led to a high-performance PDA/PEI/SiO 2 -PVDF hydrophilic ultrafiltration membrane with a rejection rate exceeding 99% for 20 nm nanoparticles in a long-term simulated separation experiment while achieving a significant protein permeability of 97% in BSA permeation experiments. Additionally, the membrane demonstrated exceptional long-term stability, offering a novel approach for tuning the performance of ultrafiltration/microfiltration membranes.

D-xylose, a biomass derivative, is used as a substrate to generate D-xylulose and D-ribulose with high-added value through a cascade reaction. During this process, the thermal stability and catalytic efficiency of rate-limiting enzymes during cascade reactions are important issues that must be addressed in industrial applications. In this study, we prepared and validated PDA/SiO 2 microspheres as highly loaded immobilization carriers by oxidative self-polymerization of polydopamine (PDA) on silica (SiO 2 ) microspheres. D-xylose was successfully catalyzed by the co-immobilized D-5-phosphate ribose isomerase B (RpiB) and D-tagatose-3-epimerase (DTE), denoted PDA/SiO 2 -RpiB-DTE, to produce D-ribulose and D-xylulose. After immobilization, the K m of co-immobilized RpiB and DTE decreased, which suggested increased substrate affinity. The half-life of the co-immobilized enzymes was 3.5–8 fold higher than that of the free enzymes at 50–70 °C, and the inactivation rate constant was reduced, demonstrating that immobilization improved significantly the thermal stability. The conversion of D-xylose at 10 mM was 29.98% under optimal conditions, which contained 9.85% D-ribulose and 20.13% D-xylulose. PDA/SiO 2 -RpiB-DTE showed up to 89.10% initial enzyme activity after 3 recycle runs. The thermal stability and recovery aspects were improved by immobilization, which facilitates the use of biomass to produce high-value-added products and further exploitation.

To achieve an effective and straightforward method for Cr(VI) removal from industrial wastewater, a composite Bi 2 S 3 /PDA/PEI material (BSPP) was successfully prepared through in-situ polymerization of polydopamine (PDA) followed by chemical grafting with polyethylenimine (PEI) on the surface of Bi 2 S 3 materials for round-the-clock highly efficient Cr(VI) removal from actual industrial electroplating wastewater. Under dark conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) by BSPP reaches 780.75 mg/g. Interestingly, when exposed to light, the maximum Cr(VI) removal capacity was further increased to 1333.21 mg/g. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) analyses indicate that BSPP not only reduces Cr(VI) to Cr(III) under light condition, but also facilitates the significant decrease of total chromium content. Notably, under natural sunlight exposure outdoors, BSPP is capable of completely eliminating Cr(VI) from both plating cleaning solutions and waste plating solutions. More importantly, BSPP maintains its original Cr(VI) removal efficiency after nine cycles within plating cleaning solutions and six cycles within waste plating solutions. Large-scale testing results indicate that BSPP can effectively treat substantial volumes of electroplating wastewater to comply with national Cr(VI) discharge standards. These findings suggest that BSPP represents a promising material for continuous 24-hour Cr(VI) treatment in industrial electroplating wastewater.

To overcome the critical challenges of high smoke toxicity and flammability in flexible polyvinyl chloride (fPVC), this study developed a core-shell flame retardant (MOSw@PDA@NiOOH) via polydopamine (PDA) interfacial engineering and in-situ NiOOH deposition on magnesium oxysulfate whiskers (MOSw). SEM, TEM, and EDS confirm the hierarchical interface structure with Ni(III)-based NiOOH nanoparticles uniformly anchored on MOSw surfaces. Cone calorimetry tests show a 35.38% reduction in peak smoke production rate and a 75.88% decrease in total smoke production, respectively, for fPVC/MOSw@PDA@NiOOH compared to fPVC/MOSw composite, along with a UL-94 V-0 rating and 28.8% limiting oxygen index. Raman, TGA, and XPS analyses reveal that: i) the strong Lewis acidity of Ni(III) facilitates chloride elimination from PVC, leading to the formation of conjugated polyene structures; ii) the powerful oxidizing capability of Ni(III) directly oxidizes unsaturated carbons such as C=C, generating carbocations that subsequently promote aromatization and cross-linking reactions; iii) Ni(III) induces complete decomposition of MOSw into MgO, ultimately forming a dense carbonaceous residue layer composed of graphitic carbon, MgO, NiO, and MgCl 2 . Py-GC/MS and TGA-FTIR analyses further demonstrate that the strong oxidative capacity of Ni(III) also promotes deep cleavage and oxidation of aromatic/aliphatic intermediates, which significantly reduces the accumulation of smoke precursors. Moreover, both the Ni(III) and its reduced Ni(II) possess partially filled 3d orbitals capable of scavenging gas-phase radicals (e.g., H· and HO·), thereby interrupting combustion chain reactions and imparting flame-retardant efficacy. Additionally, PDA’s amino/hydroxyl groups strengthen the MOSw-PVC interface via hydrogen bonding, increasing tensile modulus (20.9 MPa) and strength (17.8 MPa) while maintaining impact strength (83.9 kJ/m 2 ). This work establishes a multifunctional design strategy that simultaneously achieves flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical reinforcement in fPVC composites through synergistic interfacial and catalytic effects.

Chronic wounds pose significant challenges in clinical treatment due to persistent inflammation, bacterial infections, and prolonged healing cycles. The development of smart dressings with moisture absorption, antibacterial properties, and stimulus responsiveness is particularly important. This work addresses the issues of low rehydration rate, lack of antibacterial activity in bacterial cellulose (BC) films, the complexity of traditional silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) preparation processes, and the varying hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity requirements of dressings at different stages of wound healing. Through a multi-level structural design, a photothermal-thermoresponsive synergistic intelligent antibacterial material was successfully constructed. Firstly, the introduction of glycerol (Gly) as a plasticizer significantly improved the rehydration rate, water vapor permeability, and flexibility of BC films. To endow the dressing with antibacterial properties, the natural antibacterial agent berberine (Ber) was introduced, and the synergistic effect of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) enabled the in-situ reduction and uniform loading of AgNPs under mild conditions, thereby achieving broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. The outer layer was grafted with thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), leveraging its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) to meet the varying hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity requirements of dressings at different stages of wound healing. Simultaneously, PNIPAM coating effectively regulated the photothermal conversion efficiency of PDA and prevented the early rapid release of silver ions. The antioxidant capacity of Ber not only inhibited the oxidative deactivation of AgNPs but also effectively cleared reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during wound healing and photothermal processes, thereby reducing tissue oxidative damage. Based on the synergistic antibacterial effects of Ber and AgNPs, the composite films achieved maximum inhibition zones of 4.2 ± 0.12 mm, 5.4 ± 0.16 mm, 1.9 ± 0.04 mm and 1.6 ± 0.04 mm against E. coli , S. aureus , P. aeruginosa and MRSA respectively. The material combines moisture absorption and permeability, biocompatibility, and long-term antibacterial performance, along with environmentally responsive controlled drug release and ROS clearance functions, offering a new solution for chronic wound treatment and promoting the innovative development of smart wound dressings.
