A series of granular pH-sensitive semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogels based on chitosan (CTS), acrylic acid (AA) and gelatine (GE) were utilized for the adsorption and recycle of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The composite hydrogels have been characterized by FT-IR and TGA. The effects of contact time, pH value and initial Pb(II) concentration on the adsorption were investigated. Results indicated that the adsorption capacity of the hydrogel increased with increasing pH value and initial Pb(II) concentration, and a pH-sensitive adsorption characteristic was presented. The adsorption rate of the semi-IPN hydrogels on Pb(II) is fast with an adsorption rate constant of 14.9790 mg/(g·s), and adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 10 min. The adsorption isotherms of the hydrogels for Pb(II) could be described well by the Langmuir equation, rather than the Freundlich equation. The as-prepared hydrogels showed good reusability with 0.05 mol/l HNO3 solutions as the desorbing agent and 0.1 mol/l NaOH solutions as the regeneration agent, respectively. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption processes, the semi-IPN hydrogel with 20 wt% GE may reach 85.26% of its initial adsorption capacity. In addition, the adsorbed Pb(II) can be quantitatively recovered by simply eluting the hydrogel with dilute HNO3 solution, and a recovery ratio of 89.27% was reached for the semi-IPN hydrogel. The satisfactory adsorption amount is mainly derived from the chelating of functional groups (i.e. –COO− and –NH2) with Pb(II) ions. The hydrogel adsorbents exhibited excellent affinity for Pb(II), and can be applied to treat wastewater containing heavy metal ion and simultaneously recover the valuable metal sources.

In this work, lead chloride (PbCl 2 ) and lead acetate trihydrate (Pb(Ac) 2 ·3H 2 O) mixed precursors are introduced to prepare perovskite films. PbCl 2 has been reported to enhance crystallinity but long annealing time is required. Pb(Ac) 2 ·3H 2 O is used because it is cheap and easy to get, and lead acetate offers fast crystallization process , meanwhile the trihydrate might improve the film stability. With an optimal blending ratio of the two precursors (1:1 mol ratio), compact and full-coverage perovskite film with large grain sizes (>1 µm) are obtained, and the speed of perovskite film formation is greatly accelerated. Moreover, the film prepared in a 1:1 mol ratio of the two precursors exhibits good moisture liability for several days under around 70% RH environment. As a result, the PbCl 2 : Pb(Ac) 2 ·3H 2 O (1:1) results in the highest efficiency of 14.77%. The findings in this work provide a facile way to improve the perovskite film quality and stability.

With the increasing concern in sustainable development and environmental governance, the biomass-based magnetic materials containing sufficient active sites and regular structure can be regarded as the high-performance adsorbents for removal of heavy metal pollutants from wastewater. In this study, we reported the tunable covalent binding of lignin onto amine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (AMNP) using cyanuric chloride as a chemoselective cross-linker. The chemical structures, morphologies, and magnetic properties of the synthesized lignin-based magnetic adsorbents (L1@MNP and L2@MNP) were comprehensively characterized. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate various effecting factors, including pH, contact time, solution concentration and temperature. With the higher component ratio of AMNP/lignin, L1@MNP displayed higher adsorption affinity ( q max = 111.23 mg/g) and selectivity towards Pb(II) than L2@MNP ( q max = 81.97 mg/g). The adsorption kinetics agreed well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the thermodynamic adsorption behaviors were found to be an endothermic and spontaneous process. In addition, the presence of magnetic cores in the network facilitated the fast recovery of both two magnetic adsorbents after the adsorption process, owing to the good superparamagnetic properties for L1@MNP (40.06 emu/g) and L2@MNP (26.95 emu/g). Furthermore, the core–shell magnetic adsorbents also showed superior stability even in an acidic solution, of which the removal efficiency could well maintain over 85% after 5 cycles. This work provides a facile strategy for the design and synthesis of lignin-based adsorbents with flexible nanoparticles as a building block for the potential application prospects in Pb(II) removal from wastewater.

Temperature stability of the piezoelectric ceramics is critical to its performance in high-power devices. In this research, 5 mol% BiScO 3 (BS) is introduced into 0.05Pb(Mn 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 –Pb(Zr 1− x Ti x )O 3 system. The morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) has been re-located by shifting Zr/Ti ratio systematically for the piezoceramic. Optimal piezoelectric properties with piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 341 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor ( k p ) of 0.51, and mechanical quality factor Q m value of 859 are obtained in MPB compositions of 0.05BiScO 3 –0.05Pb(Mn 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 –0.9Pb(Zr 45.5 Ti 54.5 )O 3 ceramic at room temperature. Furthermore, the addition of BiScO 3 effects profoundly on the temperature dependence of the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. Comparing to common Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 -based piezoceramic, the BS-doped ceramic presents elevating ferroelectric polarization with temperature up to 200 °C, as well as stabilized d 33 , k p , and Q m values from room temperature to 120 °C.

Chemical stabilization is frequently used to stabilize lead (Pb) or arsenate (As), but faces challenges in Pb-As co-contaminated soils because of the antagonistic reactions between chemical stabilizers and contaminants. In this work, we innovated an effective and cost-efficient stepwise steam flash heating (SSFH) strategy to simultaneously immobilize Pb and As, and unraveled the underlying mechanisms. The combination of 1.5 % Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 and 2 % Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 only decreased 1.99 % Pb by toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP-Pb) but increased 17.8 % of TCLP-As due to the antagonistic effects. SSFH with Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 in the first step and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 in the second step achieved the minimal TCLP-Pb and TCLP-As of 0.778 and 0.327 mg/L, respectively. It also reduced 69.8 % of leachable As in 100-year acid rain simulation, indicating a favorable long-term stabilization performance. Additionally, SSFH approach reduced 43.2 % stabilizer dosage and 14.9 % cost. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) documented that the stepwise SFH promoted the transformation of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 and NaAsO 2 /NaAsO 3 /As 2 O 3 /As 2 O 5 into stable Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and FeAsO 4 , preventing the formation of AsO 4 3- and FePO 4 . Our findings proved the state-of-the-art SSFH approach and unraveled its mechanisms to stabilize Pb and As co-contamination in soils, offering a green and sustainable remediation alternative for the management of heavy metal contaminated sites. Environmental implication A novel stepwise SFH approach can be applied to overcome the stabilizer antagonist effects by separately immobilizing Pb and As in two sequential steps. It also decreased 43.2 % of stabilizer dosage and 14.9 % of cost comparing to conventional chemical stabilization. This approach can be used for other metal co-contaminated soils facing similar antagonistic challenges, and our work raises a state-of-the-art solution for cost-effective, green and sustainable remediation practices.

A low-cost and selective adsorbent (referred to as CC-CCW@DM) is prepared by modifying crofton weed using 1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride to achieve Pb(II) removal. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis results indicate that 1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride is successfully grafted in the crofton weed after modification. The Pb(II) adsorption process is investigated by adsorption isotherm/kinetic models and adsorption thermodynamics. The adsorption kinetic data are well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption equilibrium data can be better described by the Hill and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. The maximum Pb(II) adsorption is 234.60 mg/g at a pH of 5 based on the Hill isotherm model. An adsorption thermodynamic study shows that the Pb(II) adsorption process is spontaneous, with △G 0 values ranging from −25.85 to −32.52 kJ/mol at 298–318 K. CC-CCW@DM has good selectivity for Pb(II) adsorption in wastewater. Recycling experiments show that Pb(II) removal is 93.14% after three cycles. In addition, the adsorption mechanism is systematically studied. The density functional theory calculation results show that there are three ways to combine Pb(II) with N on CC-CCW@DM. In summary, CC-CCW@DM is a selective and reusable adsorbent with a high adsorption capability.

Hydrazinolyzed cellulose-graft-polymethyl acrylate (Cell-g-PMA-HZ), an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution, has been prepared by ceric salt-initiated graft polymerization of methyl acrylate from microcrystalline cellulose surface and subsequent hydrazinolysis. The influences of initial pH, contact time, and temperature on adsorption capacity of Cell-g-PMA-HZ as well as adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic properties were examined in detail. As for Cd(II) adsorption, kinetic adsorption can be explained by pseudo-second-order, while adsorption isotherm fits well with Langmuir isotherm model, from which maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity can be derived as 235.85 mg g −1 at 28 °C. Further thermodynamic investigation indicated that adsorption of Cd(II) by adsorbent Cell-g-PMA-HZ is endothermic and spontaneous under studied conditions. On the other hand, isotherm of Pb(II) adsorption fits well with Freundlich isotherm model and is more likely to be a physical-adsorption-dominated process. Consecutive adsorption–desorption experiments showed that Cell-g-PMA-HZ is reusable with satisfactory adsorption capacity.

Electron beam (EB) irradiation successfully shifted ETS-10 zeolite from a microporous to a mesoporous framework. • XRD and SEM confirmed crystalline framework and morphology remained stable under EB radiation up to 1000 kGy. • 1000 kGy dose expanded pore size to 8 nm and increased the specific surface area to 333 m 2 /g. • Modified mesoporous structure improved ion diffusion, yielding high capacities of 878.16 mg/g for Pb(II) and 181.69 mg/g for Cu(II). • Adsorption behaviour followed the Sips model, indicating a hybrid multilayer-to-monolayer transition on a heterogeneous surface. ETS-10 zeolite is known for its superior adsorption properties and high ion-exchange capacity, making it suitable for applications in adsorption. While the pristine ETS-10 framework possesses inherent acidic sites and a unique crystalline structure, its performance is often limited by its purely microporous nature. This study investigated the modification of ETS-10 using electron beam (EB) irradiation to enhance its capacity for removing Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Our results demonstrated that EB irradiation was a highly effective method for inducing a structural transition from microporous to mesoporous without compromising the structure of ETS-10 zeolite. Under EB irradiation dose of 1000 kGy, the specific surface area of ETS-10 increased to 333 m 2 /g, the pore size expanded to 8 nm, and the adsorption reached 878.16 mg/g for Pb(II) and 181.69 mg/g for Cu(II). The adsorption data for both pristine and irradiated samples were best described by the Sips isotherm model, suggesting a hybrid adsorption behaviour on a heterogeneous surface that transitions from multilayer at low concentrations to monolayer at higher concentrations. Treating titanosilicate ETS-10 with 1000 kGy electron beam (EB) irradiation significantly improved its cyclic reusability across five consecutive adsorption-desorption runs. These findings highlight the potential of EB irradiation as a powerful tool for tailoring the porosity of titanosilicate for advanced environmental remediation. Essential Role of Eu 3+ in low-lead CsPbBr 3 QD glass. • Tunable Green-to-Red Emission via Eu/Pb Ratio. • Eu 3+ induced lattice contraction and PL blue shift. • Optical temperature sensing based on dual emission. CsPbBr 3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have garnered considerable attention owing to their outstanding optical properties. However, their practical applications are hindered by poor stability and the toxicity of lead, whereas lead-free alternatives often compromise optical performance. In this study, Eu 3 + -incorporated low-lead CsPbBr 3 QDs embedded in borosilicate glass were successfully fabricated via melt quenching and heat treatment. The molar fraction of PbBr 2 in the glass system is as low as 0.0367–0.0612%, corresponding to a lead reduction of approximately 97% compared with conventional CsPbBr 3 QD glasses. We demonstrate that Eu 3+ ions are essential for the precipitation of CsPbBr 3 QDs under low-lead conditions. Meanwhile, Eu 3+ provides red emission, thereby creating dual emission centers. The green-to-red emission ratio can be finely tuned by varying the Eu/Pb ratio. In addition, Eu 3+ substitution for Pb 2+ induces lattice contraction, which causes a blue shift of the emission peak of CsPbBr 3 QDs. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the Eu0.6 Pb0.08 sample reveal that the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) increases monotonically with increasing temperature from 100 to 300 K, with maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of 3.77 × 10 −2 K −1 and 5.55 × 10 −1 K −1 , respectively. This work demonstrates the potential of low-lead perovskite QD glasses for optical temperature sensing.

The development of Pb-free dielectric materials with high recoverable energy-storage density (Wrec) and efficiency (η) remains a critical challenge for cutting-edge pulsed-power technologies. Herein, we propose a rational structural and chemical design to stabilize a relaxor state with tolerance factor t = 1.0096 by coupling highly distorted ferroelectric matrix with lattice-expanded component. We can disperse the strong long-range polarization within an expanded lattice framework through incorporating BaSnO3 into Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-BaTiO3 solid-solution with significant ferroelectric polarization, thereby achieving a synergistic optimization between the large intrinsic polarization and lattice structure. Neutron total scattering combined with Reverse Monte Carlo modeling, and atomic-resolution displacement mapping reveal Sn4+ disrupts strong long-range polarization via B-site chemical frustration, generating polar nanoclusters with intense local distortions. Concurrently, Ba2+-driven lattice expansion enhances polarization flexibility under electric fields. Notably, Bi3+-enriched nanoregions retain unit-cell polarization up to 60 μC·cm-2, confirming the coexistence of relaxor dynamics and strong local polar fluctuations. The optimized ceramic exhibits slim hysteresis loops with exceptional energy-storage performance (Wrec = 11 J·cm-3, η = 85%), and excellent charge-discharge behavior (WD = 7.0 J·cm-3 and PD = 688 MW·cm-3). This work establishes a paradigm for correlating microstructure and performance in Pb-free relaxors with high capacitive energy-storage.

Escalating aquatic contamination by toxic heavy metal ions (HMIs) urgently requires field-deployable electrochemical sensors surpassing traditional methods. This work proposed a controllable synthesis of cobalt-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon/carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (Co@NC/CMWCNTs) composites through in situ growth of ZIF-67 on CMWCNTs, followed by optimized carbonization. CMWCNTs-directed morphological evolution was systematically demonstrated, revealing that with increasing CMWCNT ratios, the ZIF-67 crystallite size underwent an initial increase and later decay, and after carbonization, a unique knot-like interpenetrating architecture was formed with CMWCNTs as bridges and Co@NC as nodes. This synergistic structure significantly enhanced electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity, as evidenced by electrochemical characterization. Compared to the glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the Co@NC/CMWCNTs/GCE sensor exhibited a 12-fold reduction in charge transfer resistance (28.3 Ω vs. 346.8 Ω), a 21% larger electroactive surface area, and rapid heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics of 3.8 × 10⁻³ cm s -1 . The composite sensor allowed simultaneous detection of Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Hg²⁺ in 0.1 M NaAc-HAc buffer (pH 4.5) with high sensitivities (169.7, 199.0, 135.9 and 108.0 μA·μM⁻¹ cm -2 ), low detection limits (40.0, 40.5, 87.5 and 106.2 nM) and observed cross-interference within 10%. This work establishes a materials design paradigm for MOF-derived electrochemical sensors for low-cost on-site environmental monitoring of HMIs.

The detection of toxic heavy metal ions, such as cadmium (Cd 2 + ) and lead (Pb 2+ ), is crucially important due to their environmental persistence and severe health risks. While multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hold potential for electrochemical sensing, their practical application is hindered by aggregation tendencies and limited analyte affinity. To address these limitations, a composite utilizing polydopamine-functionalized MWCNTs (PDA@MWCNTs) was developed. This material synergistically enhances dispersion stability and improves metal ion capture capabilities. Based on this composite, an electrochemical sensor was fabricated for simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ . Sensor characterization using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) demonstrated good performance, achieving high sensitivity and selectivity. Low detection limits of 0.21 nM for Cd 2+ and 0.13 nM for Pb 2+ were attained, enabling reliable simultaneous quantification. The electrochemical sensor’s practical utility was validated through accurate measurements in lake water sample and complex herbal medicine matrices, highlighting its applicability for environmental monitoring and food safety. This platform offers distinct advantages including simple fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and sub-nanomolar sensitivity necessary for regulatory compliance.
