Investigation of Nd2Ni0.9M0.1O4+δ (M = Ni, Co, Cu, Fe, and Mn) cathodes for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell

Silin Li,Hengyong Tu,Feng Li,Muhammad Tuoqeer Anwar,Lijun Yu

In order to improve the performance of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs), the effect of partial substitution of the transition metal M = Co, Cu, Fe and Mn for Ni in Nd 2 NiO 4+δ on the crystal chemistry, electrical conductivity , thermal stability, chemical reactivity with YSZ electrolyte and electrochemical performance has been systematically investigated. The electrochemical performances of the cathode materials are tested on planar NiO-YSZ anode-supported cells fabricated with YSZ as electrolyte in size of 50 mm × 50 mm. Compared to Nd 2 NiO 4+δ , each Nd 2 Ni 0.9 M 0.1 O 4+δ material shows a decrease in electrical conductivity and an increase in lattice volume, oxygen vacancy concentration and chemical reactivity with YSZ electrolyte. The cell with Nd 2 Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 O 4+δ cathode achieves the maximum power density of 530 mW cm −2 at 0.7 V at 800 °C. The cell with Nd 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4+δ cathode is the most stable in short-term test. A small amount of B-site doping in Nd 2 NiO 4+δ does not cause any change in the cathode microstructure. The study demonstrates that a tradeoff between oxygen transport properties and electrical conductivity can be accomplished by appropriate selection of transition metal and level of cation B-site doping in Nd2NiO4+δ. Nd2Ni0.9M0.1O4+δ (M = Co, Cu) can be considered to be potential cathode materials in IT-SOFCs.

Preparation and evaluation of 3 m open tubular capillary columns with a zwitterionic polymeric porous layer for liquid chromatography

Li Peng,Manman Zhu,Lingyi Zhang,Haiyan Liu,Weibing Zhang

A 3 m zwitterionic polymeric porous layer open tubular column (3 m × 25 μm id × 375 μm od) with a polymeric porous layer thickness of 4 μm was fabricated by the copolymerization of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide and N , N ’-methylenebis(acrylamide). The effects of the diameter of the capillary, reaction temperature, and polymerization time on the preparation of the open tubular column were investigated. Characterized by scanning electron microscopy, the zwitterionic layer was observed to be rough and throughout the fused-silica capillary homogenously, which increased the phase ratio. The separation of neutral, basic, and acidic compounds demonstrates the strong hydrophilicity of the poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide coating. In addition, the poly[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide porous layer open tubular column was applied for the analysis of flavonoids from the rootstalk of licorice, revealing the potential in separating complex samples. The relative standard deviation of retention time for run-to-run ( n = 5), day-to-day ( n = 3), and column-to-column ( n = 3) of toluene, N , N -dimethylformamide, formamide, and thiourea were below 1.2%, exhibiting good repeatability.

Design, synthesis, and antitumor activity evaluation of BF3-o, m, p-phenylenediamine bridged with pyrimidine-indole BF3 adduction derivatives

Zhou Meng,Duan Xiujie,Jin Tao,Feng Xibing,Liu Ying,Wang Shuo,Feng Jiankang,Zhang Mengtong,Chai Tiantian,Mao Boneng,Shao Shihe,Jin Guofan

Fluorescent drugs and pyrimidine-indole scaffolds have been shown to have advantages in cancer treatment. Fluorescent antitumor drugs BF 3 - o, m, p- phenylenediamine pyrimidine-indole derivatives (PYB1, PYB2, and PYB3) were synthesized by linking pyrimidine and indole groups with aniline through a simple step and introducing BF 3 . The drugs exhibit promising antitumor activity and their fluorescent properties make them useful for imaging purposes. The optical properties of the three compounds have been investigated. All of them have fluorescent properties and compound PYB2 has good fluorescent properties. Additionally, the in vitro cytotoxicity of these compounds was evaluated against the human cancer cell line HeLa and the human normal cell line L02. The inhibition rates of HeLa cells treated with PYB1, PYB2, and PYB3 at a concentration of 19.2 μg/mL were 80.91%, 77.72%, and 65.94%, respectively. These results indicate a strong inhibitory effect on cancer cells. Further through the cell imaging experiment, we can see that PYB2 can enter the cell through the cell membrane through the fluorescence scattering diagram, which has good biocompatibility. In addition, the possible interactions between the compounds and Ras protein active sites were analyzed by molecular docking. The three compounds can bind well to Ras protein through hydrogen bonding. This study provides a basis for the development and modification of pyrimidine-indole fluorescent anticancer drugs. Compound PYB2 shows potential as a fluorescent anticancer drug. Graphical abstract

Interfacial [Ti-O-M] bonds reinforced delectric responses in MXene/transition metal sulfide aerogels for efficient electromagnetic wave attenuation

Baojun Wang,Fangzhi Huang,Ping Zhang,Shikuo Li,Hui Zhang

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aerogels with the advantages of better wave impedance matching and lightweight toward electromagnetic wave (EMW) protection have aroused widespread attention. However, the limited gelation capability and inadequate interfacial interactions between MXene nanosheets impose insurmountable challenges to construct robust, free-standing MXene monoliths with efficient absorption capability. Herein, a universal assemble-confinement strategy is presented to fabricate spatially dispersed transition metal sulfides anchored on MXene aerogels (MXene/TMS) via interfacial Ti-O-M bonds, in which the divalent metal ions (Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ ) mediate the rapid gelation and assembly of MXene nanosheets into hydrogels, followed by the topological transformation of sulfidation treatment. Benefiting from the macroscopic porous structure, intimate interfacial interactions generated by Ti-O-M bonds between MXene skeleton and metal sulfides, and numerous defect polarization sites, MXene/TMS aerogels deliver optimal impedance matching balance and enhanced attenuation capacities compared to MXene nanosheets. Specifically, MXene/CoS aerogels show remarkable EMW absorption performances, with a minimum reflection loss value of −69.6 dB and full X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) absorption at an ultralow density of 0.021 g/cm 3 . Experimental results and simulation analyses demonstrate that the interfacial interactions effectively reinforce dielectric polarization responses. Additionally, stable thermal infrared stealth ability and excellent mechanical strength endow the MXene/CoS aerogel with multifunctional properties. This work provides a general approach for the rational design of MXene/TMS aerogels with multifunctional applications and presents a new insight into the electromagnetic dissipation mechanism of interfacial bonds for boosting dielectric interactions.

Microwave Absorption and Magnetic Properties of M-Type Hexagonal Ferrite Ba0.95Ca0.05Fe12−xCoxO19 (0 ≤ X ≤ 0.4) at 1–18 GHz

Juan Li,Hao Yao,Yuting Huang,Hongxia Wang

In order to improve the microwave-absorption performance of barium ferrite and broaden its microwave-absorption band, BaFe12O19, Ba0.95Ca0.05Fe12O19, and Ba0.95Ca0.05Fe12−xCoxO19(x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4, respectively) hexaferrites were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method, and the influence of Co ion substitution on the phase composition, microstructure, magnetic properties, and microwave-absorption ability of the ferrites in this system was studied. Introducing minor Co ions (x < 0.2) facilitated sintering and grain growth. At x ≥ 0.2, XRD revealed the emergence of the Co2X phase alongside the BaM phase. Increasing Co ion concentration and the secondary X-phase led to slight reductions in saturation magnetization (69 to 63.5 emu/g) and substantial decline in coercivity (2107.02 to 111.21 Oe), attributed to grain size growth and Co2X’s soft magnetic nature. Notably, Co2X incorporation significantly enhanced the microwave absorption and provided a tunable absorption band from the Ku to the C band. For a sample with a thickness of 2.0 mm and a doping level of x = 0.2, a minimum reflection loss of −59.5 dB was achieved at 8.92 GHz, with an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.31 GHz (7.07–10.38 GHz). The simple preparation method and good performance make Ba0.95Ca0.05Fe12−xCoxO19(x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4, respectively) hexaferrites promising microwave-absorbing materials.

General Formation of Monodisperse IrM (M = Ni, Co, Fe) Bimetallic Nanoclusters as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Acidic Overall Water Splitting

Yecan Pi,Qi Shao,Pengtang Wang,Jun Guo,Xiaoqing Huang

The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in acidic media is vital for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, but still full of obstacles. Here, highly efficient acidic overall water splitting is realized by utilizing ultrasmall, monodispersed Iridium (Ir)-based nanoclusters (NCs) as the candidate, via a surfactant-free, wet-chemical, and large-scalable strategy. Benefiting from the high specific surface area, clean surface, and strong binding between NCs and supports, the IrM NCs exhibit attractive activities and durability for both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic electrolytes, with IrNi NCs showing the best performance. More significantly, in the overall water splitting, IrNi NCs reach 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of only 1.58 V in 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 electrolyte, holding promises for potential implementation of PEM water electrolysis. This work opens a new avenue toward designing bifunctional “acidic stable” catalysts for efficient overall water splitting.

Pectin-derived nitrogen-doped carbon dots as green corrosion inhibitors for N80 steel in 1 M sulfuric acid solution

Yu Wu,Lingchi Zeng,Yancheng Zheng,Fuchang You,Xuejin Liu

In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using pectin polysaccharide as the carbon source, with 1-hexylamine, 1,2-diaminocyclohexane, and diethylenetriamine as individual nitrogen sources. The chemical composition, fluorescence properties, and morphology of the synthesized N-CDs were characterized. Their corrosion inhibition performance on N80 steel in 1 M H 2 SO 4 was evaluated using electrochemical analyses and weight loss experiments. Tafel and EIS analyses demonstrated that at a concentration of 200 mg/L, the maximum inhibition efficiencies of PHA-CDs, PCA-CDs, and PDA-CDs, synthesized using monoamine, diamine, and triamine as nitrogen sources, were 75.3 %, 90.1 %, and 95.4 %, respectively. The inhibition efficiency increased with the total nitrogen and pyrrolic N content in the N-CDs, corresponding to the choice of nitrogen source. Weight loss experiments further confirmed these trends. Additionally, the N-CDs were found to act as mixed-type inhibitors with a predominant anodic inhibition effect and are classified as predominantly chemisorptive. The adsorption behavior adhered to the Langmuir adsorption model, where coordination complexes formed between pyrrolic N and metal Fe increase the surface coverage of the adsorption film, thereby enhancing corrosion resistance.

Synthesis of Schiff base polymer/black talc nanocomposites based on m-phenylendiamine with enhanced separation performance for lead adsorption

Xiaohui Li,Zehai Xu,Qin Meng,Yu Chen,Lushen Xu,Guoliang Zhang

In this study, we have developed a facile in -situ hydrothermal oxidative polymerization method to synthesize poly N,N(1,3-phenylene)dimethanimine/KH550-black talc (PNPD/KH550-BT) nanocomposites for efficient removal of lead (II) (Pb 2+ ) in wastewater. This method employed eco-friendly solvent, offered a simple and cost-effective preparation procedure and resulted in a nanocomposite complex that displayed exceptional resistance to dissolve in various organic solvents, simplifying the separation process. Through the hydrothermal oxidative polymerization process, polymerization was promoted to generate spherical flower-like structures, effectively improving the dispersion of polymers on black talc nanosheets. Substantial concentration of sturdy lead-complexing groups was created, including N–H, –C N, and –NH 2 , which heightened the attraction to Pb 2+ ions and maximized the effective utilization of lead binding sites. Compared with KH550-BT and PNPD, the adsorption performance of PNPD/KH550-BT composites on Pb 2+ was significantly enhanced, and the largest adsorption capacity of lead (II) on PNPD/KH550-BT nanocomposites reached 867.1 mg/g. Moreover, the prepared nanocomposites had satisfactory adsorption potential after undergoing 10 cycles, showing good stability during adsorption. This work not only provides a new strategy to control the microstructure of polymer-based composite adsorbent but also presents various promising functionalized nanocomposites based on different polymers and minerals for application in vast fields.

Regulation of sol-gel derived Cu-M/Al2O3 by metal additives for the selective catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural

Shuanglin Jia,Wenhao Yang,Hao Liu,Xiao Chen,Jingjie Luo,Changhai Liang

Furfural is an indispensable platform compound derived from biomass resource and can be hydrogenated to produce a series of high value-added chemicals. In order to overcome the disadvantages of low selectivity and poor stability during furfural hydrogenation, design of promising Cu catalysts with well-disentangled catalytic theory becomes a hot topic. In this work, a series of Cu-M/Al 2 O 3 (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Ce) catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method to make a uniform ternary metal composition. Distinctive product distribution for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural was obtained depending on the specific Cu-M/Al 2 O 3 system. Among them, the Cu-Fe/Al 2 O 3 displayed superior selectivity of 2-methylfuran compared to any other catalysts. The introduced metal additive acted as the electron donor to regulate the surface dispersion of Cu species. Higher percentage of surface Cu 0 +Cu + species were formed on Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 and Cu-Fe/Al 2 O 3 , accounting for the much lower activation energy and better dissociation ability for isoproponal. If Cu-Ni/Al 2 O 3 or Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 was used as the catalyst, hydrogenation happened on the furan ring. Whilst Cu-Co/Al 2 O 3 was more preferentially used to produce 2-pentanol and 2-pentanone, with large amount of copper species in oxidative states. The yield of 2-MF reached 84 % at 220 ºC in N 2 at ordinary pressure by Cu-Fe/Al 2 O 3 with the specific rate of 106.8 mmol FAL ·g Cu −1 ·h −1 .

Enhancing Energy Density of BaTiO3-Bi(M)O3@SiO2/PVDF Nanocomposites via Filler Component Modulation and Film Structure Design

Jin Hu,Fangfang Liu

The low energy density (Ud) of polymeric dielectrics is unfavorable for the integration and miniaturization of electronics, thus limiting their application prospects. Introducing high-εr(dielectric constant) ceramic nanofillers to polymer matrices is the most common strategy to enhance theirεr,and hence theirUd. By comparison, enhancing breakdown strength (Eb) is a more effective strategy to enhanceUd. Herein, 0.6BaTiO3-0.4Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3and 0.85BaTiO3-0.15Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3nanofibers coated with SiO2were utilized as fillers in PVDF-based nanocomposites. The combination of experimental and simulation results suggests that the intrinsic properties of nanofillers are the determining factor of theEbof polymer-based nanocomposites, and SiO2coating and film structure design are effective strategies to enhance theirEb, and consequently theirUd. As a result, the sandwich-structured PVDF/6 wt% 0.85BaTiO3-0.15Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3@SiO2nanofiber within PVDF/PVDF nanocomposite films achieved a maximumUdof 11.1 J/cm3at anEbof 458 MV/m, which are 2.15 and 1.40 times those of pristine PVDF, respectively.

Rapid Microwave-Driven Sulfur Sublimation Synthesis of MS2/RuS2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni) for Efficient Alkaline Overall Water Splitting

Xinyu Zhu,Minghao Fang,Bozhi Yang,Shaorou Ke,Meiling Zhan,YuanMeng Wang,Shujie Yang,Xin Li,Yanghong Li,Xin Min

Facing the complex application environment and overall inefficiency in the complete water-splitting process, the development of highly efficient and stable catalytic materials is urgently required. This study innovatively proposes and for the first time implements a rapid synthesis technique driven by microwave-induced sulfur sublimation, successfully preparing MS 2 /RuS 2 (M = Co, Fe, Ni) heterostructure interfaces with high structural stability and uniform active site distribution within merely 60 s. By incorporating iron-group sulfides, the electronic structure of pyrite-type RuS 2 is effectively modulated, enabling the developed MS 2 /RuS 2 @G catalyst to exhibit superior activity in alkaline environments. Particularly, the cobalt-based sulfide regulated pyrite-type RuS 2 (CoS 2 /RuS 2 @G) achieves a mass activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) that is 15.4 times that of 20 wt.% Pt/C, and in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), it surpasses commercial IrO 2 by two orders of magnitude. This research not only provides a new pathway for enhancing the performance and environmental adaptability of water-splitting catalysts but also presents a simple and universal method to boost catalytic activity through a synergistic modulation strategy.
