Mn Oxide Nanowire/ZIF-8 Composites with Multiple Enzyme-like Activities for Enantioselective Glutamate Sensing

Guo-Ying Chen,Mao-Ling Luo,Jing-Jing Dai,Feng-Qing Yang

A composite material of Mn oxide nanowires and ZIF-8 (MnxOyNWs@ZIF-8-RD) with controllable sizes and morphologies (rhombic dodecahedron-shape) was successfully synthesized under mild reaction conditions. The systematic investigation into the effects of synthesis conditions of the material on their microstructure and crystalline morphology was conducted. The material function as “tandem enzymes”, exhibiting multiple enzyme-like activities, such as peroxidase (POD)- and glutamate-oxidase (Glu OXD)-like activities. Kinetic studies reveal that the MnxOyNWs@ZIF-8-RD has excellent enzyme-like catalytic activity, with high substrate affinity and a maximum reaction rate of (H2O2: 840.52 × 10−8M·S−1). MnxOyNWs@ZIF-8-RD shows remarkable enantioselectivity for Glu enantiomers based on its POD- and Glu OXD-like activities. By integrating theoretical and experimental approaches, the recognition mechanism was preliminarily elucidated. In short, this study offered valuable insights for developing sophisticated functional materials and provided methodological references for Glu enantiomer recognition and quantitative detection.

Pyridinic nitrogen dominated doping on Pd/carbon catalysts for enhanced hydrogenation performance

He Limin,Wang Yangdong,Wang Can,Liu Zhicheng,Xie Zaiku

The hydrogenation of 4-carboxylbenzaldehyde over Pd catalysts is a crucial process during the production of pure terephthalic acid. Herein, ZIF-8 derived carbon materials (NC) with adjustable N types were synthesized and used as the supports of Pd catalysts. Pd supported on NC with 50.5% of pyridinic N exhibited best hydrogenation activity with a TOF value of 4.1 min−1. The microstructures of NC support and electronic structures of Pd in Pd/NC were investigated by techniques such as XRD, N2 physisorption, XPS, H2-O2 titration and TEM. The nitrogen species in CN surface not only can adjust chemical state and dispersion of Pd nanoparticles (NPs), but also promote the adsorption and activation capability of H2 molecular. Besides, the ratio of Pd0/Pd2+ and Pd dispersion were closely correlated with pyridinic nitrogen content. The improvement in hydrogenation activity and stability of Pd/CN catalyst in relative to Pd/C were ascribed to the synergistic effect of pyridinic nitrogen and active site Pd0.

Determination of phthalate esters in environmental water by magnetic Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography

Xiaomei Liu,Zhiwei Sun,Guang Chen,Wanwan Zhang,Yiping Cai,Rongmei Kong,Xiaoyan Wang,Yourui Suo,Jinmao You

In this study, the magnetic Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) microspheres were successfully synthesized and applied as an effective sorbent for preconcentration of several typical phthalate esters (PAEs) from environmental water samples. Firstly, the solvothermal treatment method was used for preparation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Then, mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) was served as the functionalized chemical to modify Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 core–shell microspheres were synthesized through coating the MAA-capped Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with ZIF-8. By coupling magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a reliable, sensitive and cost-effective method for simultaneous determination of five main PAEs including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di- n -butyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), and dioctyl phthalate (DOP) was developed. Good linearity was observed in the range of 1.0–100.0   μg/L. The limits of detection (S/N   =   3) and limits of quantification (S/N   =   10) were in the range of 0.08–0.24 and 0.3–0.8   μg/L, respectively. The relative standard deviations were less than 5.5% and the accuracies of the method for the PAEs were in the range from 85.6% to 103.6%. Finally, the Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 was successfully applied for rapid extraction of trace amounts of PAEs in environmental water samples.

A high-performance PdZn alloy catalyst obtained from metal-organic framework for methanol steam reforming hydrogen production

Zilong Zeng,Guoliang Liu,Jiafeng Geng,Dengwei Jing,Xinlin Hong,Liejin Guo

Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is deemed to be an effective way for hydrogen production and Pd/ZnO catalyst were found to exhibit high activity in this reaction. However, their activities are strongly related to the preparations methods. In most cases, these catalysts are synthesized by impregnation or co-precipitation methods, aiming to change the dispersion and stability of Pd nanoparticle to get better performance. Here we report an efficient Pd/ZnO catalyst that was synthesized with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the precursor, on which Pd ions was supported after NaHB 4 reduction. Typically, when the catalyst reduced at 300 °C for 2 h, the methanol conversion could reach 97–98% and the CO 2 selectivity is around 86.3% under the reaction condition of 0.1 MPa, water/CH 3 OH = 1.2:1 (mol ratio), WHSV methanol  = 43152ml/g cat *h, catalyst = 0.1 g, our catalyst was found to show much better performance than other Pd@ZnO catalysts prepared by other methods, especially in terms of selectivity which is particularly important for hydrogen fuel cell application considering that Pt electrode could be poisoned by even trace amount of CO. It turned out that the large surface area , enough holes, evenly distributed PdZn alloy activity sites and abundant oxygen vacancies lead to the overall excellent performance of our catalyst.

Synthesis of a superhydrophilic coral-like reduced graphene oxide aerogel and its application to pollutant capture in wastewater treatment

Yan Liu,Jiajia Fu,Jinsong He,Bo Wang,Yan He,Ling Luo,Lilin Wang,Chao Chen,Fei Shen,Yanzong Zhang

Inspired by nature, a zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8@reduced graphene oxide (ZIF-8@rGO) aerogel was developed to remove tetracycline (TC) from water. The ZIF-8 nanoparticles grown on the rGO aerogel act like the many tentacles of a coral to hunt TC, and the rGO aerogel not only acts as a substrate but also acts like the belly of the coral, which can accommodate a large number of pollutants. Benefiting from these advantages, the ZIF-8@rGO aerogel can decontaminate TC, and showed an excellent adsorption capacity of 1776.26 mg g −1 . Based on the experimental tests and characterization analysis, we speculated that the adsorption mechanism between TC and ZIF-8@rGO aerogel was mainly related to the hydrogen-bonding interactions, π-π interaction and electrostatic attraction. This discovery could be transformative for the removal of different types of pollutants by means of adjusting the functional groups of the materials and their composite technology.

Encapsulating Cu nanoparticles into metal-organic frameworks for nonenzymatic glucose sensing

Libo Shi,Xiang Zhu,Tingting Liu,Hongli Zhao,Minbo Lan

In this work, we applied metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a porous matrix to encapsulate Cu nanoparticles (NPs) for nonenzymatic glucose sensing in alkaline media . SEM and TEM confirmed that the size of the encapsulated Cu NPs ranges from 2.5 to 5   nm. The hybrid of Cu NPs encapsulated in ZIF-8 (Cu-in-ZIF-8) was further modified onto screen-printed electrodes for nonenzymatic sensing of glucose in alkaline medium. The porous structure of ZIF-8 are beneficial for the unimpeded diffusion of glucose and reaction product. And as a matrix for encapsulating Cu NPs, ZIF-8 also protect the Cu NPs from dissolution and agglomeration during the electrocatalytic process. For comparison, the electrochemical performance of Cu NPs loaded on ZIF-8 (Cu-on-ZIF-8) was also investigated and it is found that Cu-in-ZIF-8 exhibited higher activity and better stability for cyclic test toward the oxidation of glucose in alkaline media. Additionally, Cu-in-ZIF-8 based glucose sensor also shows a favorable sensitivity and selectivity.

Composition-engineered copper-doped ZIF-8 nanoplatform for oxidative stress regulation and ferroptosis suppression in osteoarthritis

Linjun Yang,Xuhui Fan,Weicheng Pan,Yao Jin,Jianle Wang,You Wang,Han Wang,Zhijun Hu

Composition-engineered Cu-doped ZIF-8 was designed for OA therapy. • Cu@ZIF-8 reduced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in chondrocytes. • Cu@ZIF-8 suppressed ferroptosis and preserved ECM homeostasis. • Intra-articular Cu@ZIF-8 attenuated OA progression in rats. Engineering metal–organic framework (MOF)-based materials with tunable composition and biological function offers a promising strategy for regulating pathological oxidative microenvironments. Herein, a composition-engineered copper-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoplatform, Cu@ZIF-8, was designed to modulate oxidative stress-associated lipid peroxidation and chondrocyte ferroptosis for osteoarthritis (OA) therapy. The incorporation of copper into the ZIF-8 framework enabled homogeneous elemental distribution while preserving the crystalline structure and high specific surface area of the MOF platform. In H 2 O 2 - and RSL3-induced chondrocyte injury models, Cu@ZIF-8 reduced intracellular ROS accumulation, alleviated lipid peroxidation, preserved mitochondrial membrane potential, restored GPX4/SLC7A11 expression, and maintained extracellular matrix homeostasis. Mechanistic studies suggested that Cu@ZIF-8-mediated ferroptosis suppression was associated, at least in part, with modulation of p38 MAPK/AKT signaling. In a surgically induced rat OA model, intra-articular administration of Cu@ZIF-8 attenuated cartilage degeneration, reduced oxidative and ferroptosis-related damage, and showed no apparent systemic toxicity under the tested conditions. This study establishes a composition-engineered MOF nanoplatform that links copper-doped ZIF-8 design with oxidative stress regulation, ferroptosis suppression, and cartilage protection, providing a materials-design strategy for OA microenvironment modulation. Tannic acid coordinated ZIF-8 interlayers regulated polyamide membranes for boosted ion selectivity and antifouling property

Rui Li,Han Zhang,Jiayu Gao,Qirui Tu,Rui Jin,Meng He,Fang Zhang,Tunga Kuhana Arsene,Pingping Chen,Huixian Wang,Yuping Tong,Shuangqiao Han,Yatao Zhang

Traditional polyamide nanofiltration membranes are restricted by their permeance-selectivity trade-off and fouling intolerance, which collectively constrains efficient ionic separations. To address these, hydroxyl-rich core-shell ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized via tannic acid-mediated coordination (TA/ZIF-8), achieving polyphenol-tailored structural regulation. Herein, the TA/ZIF-8 nanoparticles were engineered to regulate polyamide membranes fabrication via vacuum-assisted filtration by confining interfacial polymerization. Critically, enhanced hydrophilicity and dispersion were induced by TA-Zn 2+ coordination, while monomer diffusion was restricted by the hydrogen bonding between TA/ZIF-8 and piperazine. Consequently, ultrathin polyamide layers characterized by striped/nodular morphologies and elevated roughness were formed. Modulated by the TA/ZIF-8 interlayer, the crosslinking density was reduced, whereas the surface hydrophilicity and electronegativity were simultaneously augmented. As a result, an exceptional water permeance (31.8 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ) coupled with a high Na 2 SO 4 rejection (98.3%) and a superior Cl − /SO 4 2− selectivity (46.5) was achieved by the optimized membranes. Furthermore, the membranes demonstrated exceptional antifouling property, robust stability, and outperformed literature NF benchmarks. This work establishes TA/ZIF-8 interlayers as a scalable platform for transcending permeability-selectivity limits in antifouling desalination nanofiltration membranes.

Performance of tunable Fe-N-C-based oxygen reduction reaction catalysts prepared based on ZIF-8

Yang Menghui,Gao Zhen,Zhan Haoyu,Bi Mengqi,Huang Naibao,Zhang Junjie,Gan Ziqi,Wang Hao

Developing highly active, durable, and cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial for fuel cell commercialization through the use of non-precious metal alternatives to platinum. In this study, the tunable dodecahedral Fe-N-C catalysts were synthesized through controlled pyrolysis of Fe-doped zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) precursors. The optimized 5% Fe@NC-8 catalyst demonstrates excellent ORR performance with an onset potential of 0.92 V vs. RHE, a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.83 V vs. RHE, and a limiting diffusion current density (j d ) of 6.06 mA cm −2 , surpassing commercial 20% Pt/C catalysts (onset potential 0.89 V vs. RHE; E 1/2 0.81 V vs. RHE; j d 4.27 mA cm −2 ). It also shows strong durability, retaining 86.16% of its current after prolonged polarization (@0.80 V vs. RHE for 10,000 s) and minimal negative shift in half-wave potential after extensive cycling(@200 mV s −1 for 5000 CV cycles). The enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to (i) possessing a high specific surface area (319 m 2  g −1 ) and favorable porosity to maximize active site accessibility; (ii) having abundant active sites of Fe-N x , graphitic N, and pyridinic N as active catalytic centers; and (iii) forming N-doped carbon matrices to provide a conductive framework. These advantages boost the density of accessible active sites and thus remarkably improve the ORR catalytic activity.

Sustainable salt-free dyeing and multifunctional finishing of polyester fabrics via in-situ grown ZIF-8

Lili Wang,Ningli Pan,Chen Chen,Yang Dong,Dawei Gao

In-situ ZIF-8 growth on polyester enables salt/auxiliary-free dyeing with weak acid dyes at room temperature, eliminating high-temperature high-pressure process. • ZIF-8 coating provides abundant active sites for efficient weak acid dye adsorption without salts or dispersants. • PDMS modification confers superhydrophobicity (153.6°), UV protection (UPF 59.58), and oil-water separation. • The composite fabric shows outstanding washing/abrasion resistance and maintains ∼100% separation efficiency after 20 cycles. Conventional polyester dyeing is energy-intensive, water-consuming, and reliant on salts and dispersants, while the finished fabrics lack multifunctionality. Here, we report a sustainable strategy that integrates clean dyeing with multifunctional finishing of polyester fabrics. This strategy is achieved via in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8. Alkali pretreatment introduces hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the fiber surface, which enables uniform ZIF-8 growth to construct a micro/nano-rough architecture with abundant active sites and positive surface charge. This architecture allows efficient adsorption dyeing with weak acid dyes at room temperature — completely eliminating salts, dispersants, and the conventional high-temperature high-pressure process. Subsequent PDMS modification imparts superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 153.6°), UV protection (UPF: 59.58), and excellent oil–water separation efficiency (∼100% after 20 cycles), while the dyed fabric achieves a color depth (K/S) of 8.75 with good fastness. Notably, this one-step integration of dyeing and functionalization eliminates energy-intensive steps, reduces chemical usage, and enables room-temperature processing. This work offers a green, low-carbon pathway for multifunctional polyester textiles with promising applications in oily wastewater treatment. Hydrodynamic−Plasmonic Au@ZIF-8 Nanoarray Sensor for Ultrasensitive DNA Methylation Assay toward Early Cancer Detection

Runcheng Liu,Jie Yan,Shujun Zhang,Wen Yang,Juan Li,Xiaoyan Sun,Lutao Du,Mingshun Jiang

DNA methylation has emerged as a pivotal molecular biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. Nevertheless, existing detection strategies remain limited by complex workflows, poor efficiency in trace DNA capture, and the inability to resolve both absolute concentration and methylation ratio simultaneously. Herein, we engineer a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) biosensor functionalized with Au@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Au@ZIF-8) core-shell nanoparticle arrays. This architecture overcomes the diffusion-limited capture of conventional biosensors through a powerful hydrodynamic−plasmonic synergy. First, hydrodynamic stagnation flow efficiently preconcentrates trace DNA molecules onto the sensing interface. Subsequently, plasmon-enhanced dielectrophoresis provides an active trapping force, precisely localizing these molecules onto sensing hotspots. To enable multiparametric methylation profiling, a dual-recognition strategy was developed by integrating sequence-specific DNA hybridization with 5-methylcytosine (5mC) antibody binding. This approach allows for rapid (<15 min), amplification-free quantification of both methylated DNA concentration and methylation ratio in complex biological samples, with an ultralow detection limit of 6.9 × 102 copies/μL. Clinical validation using patient-derived samples demonstrates excellent diagnostic accuracy, achieving a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) of 0.941 through multilocus methylation analysis. This study establishes a robust, amplification- and label-free biosensing platform that integrates microfluidic manipulation with plasmonic nanoengineering, offering a powerful strategy for high-throughput, clinically translatable DNA methylation analysis in early cancer detection.
