Modulating thermo-diffusion/galvanic coupling via ion speciation engineering enables high-performance ionic thermoelectric cells

Li Yuchen,Qiu Ying-Ru,Liao Jinsha,Li Helios Y.,Liu Zhouyuntong,Chen Yuxiang,Yu Mao,Xu Lizhi,Liu Chang,Liu Jefferson Zhe,Li Jian-Feng,Liu Weishu,Wang Yao-Hui,Fang Nicholas X.

Ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) materials have demonstrated a high thermopower in harvesting low-grade heat, emerging as superior candidates for self-powered electronics. However, coupling two i-TE effects in n-type materials is scarce, which restricts the development of high-performance systems. Herein, we uncover an overlooked thermogalvanic redox reaction between Cu 2+ and Cu + stabilized by Cl⁻ and quantitatively track the progressive reaction process by operando characterization. In binary polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-CuCl 2 gels, an interactive i-TE coupling effect driven by ion speciation is validated, which exhibits an enhanced thermogalvanic redox as CuCl 2 concentrations increase while suppressing the thermodiffusion contribution. By distinguishing and quantifying coordination species, we reveal the impact of [Cu-Cl] speciation on the i-TE effect contributions. Correspondingly, a giant thermopower of −30.6 mV K -1 and a remarkable power density of 0.6 mW m -2 K -2 are achieved, respectively, by tuning ion coordination speciation. The long-term power generation exhibits a reversible and sustainable heat-to-electricity conversion. High output voltage of 3.5 V and power of 22 µW are produced in 16-cell i-TE modules when harvesting 15 K. Our findings reveal an interactive thermo-diffusion/galvanic coupling effect based on coordination chemistry, offering a potential design principle for high-performance i-TE materials.

A decoy oligodeoxynucleotide favors the differentiation of CpG ODN-induced B cells into IL-10-producing Breg-like cells over plasma cells by restoring IRF4/IRF8 imbalance

Feiyu Lu,Shengnan Wang,Mengru Zhu,Kuo Qu,Tong Zhu,Hong Wang,Yongli Yu,Liying Wang

The imbalanced expression of interferon regulatory factor (IRF) 4 and IRF8 in activated B cells significantly influences their differentiation and promotes the development of immune-related diseases. Restoring abnormal B cells to appropriate responses may treat these diseases. In this study, an oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) S2, designed according to the consensus sequence recognized by IRFs in interferon-stimulated response elements, was used as an immunomodulator to investigate its effects on mouse splenic B cells stimulated with the TLR9 agonist CpG ODN, either alone or in combination with antigen, and to explore its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that S2 had a significant negative regulatory effect on CpG ODN induced B cell activation. It also significantly downregulated the production of IL-6 and the percentage of IL-6 + B cells in splenocytes stimulated by CpG ODN, but significantly upregulated the percentage of IL-10 + B cells. Interestingly, S2 impaired antibody production both in vitro and in vivo, but rescued mice from lethal inflammatory responses. Further studies showed that S2 could bind IRF4 and IRF8 with high affinity, slightly upregulate phosphorylated IRF4, reduce the expression and nuclear translocation of IRF8, and alter the proportion of IRF4 + , IRF8 + or double-positive B cells in spleen cells induced by CpG ODN. These results suggest that S2 acts as a decoy directing some B cells to differentiate into IL-10-producing Breg-like cells rather than plasma cells by restoring the TLR9 signal-induced IRF4 and IRF8 ratio imbalance. This indicates its potential as an immunomodulator for the treatment of diseases associated with B-cell abnormalities.

Preparation of electron-withdrawing group phthalocyanine/bismuth halide oxides composite catalyst and its photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in water

Yin Yanbing,Yang Wei,Wang Zhou,Li Yifei,Dong Guohua,He Xifeng,Li Xue

To address the issue of poor carrier separation efficiency in pure bismuth iodide oxide (BiOI) photocatalysts, which results in suboptimal degradation performance of aquatic pollutants, this study prepared TNCoPc (TCCoPc)/BiOX composite semiconductor photocatalysts via a solvothermal method. Systematic characterization using XRD, UV–Vis DRS, radical scavenging experiments, and repeated stability tests revealed that the prepared TNCoPc/BiOI composite achieved degradation rates of 85.31 and 86.24% for RhB and OTC, respectively. Free radical scavenging experiments indicate that ·O 2− and h⁺ are the primary active species. The composite material constructs a Type II heterojunction, promoting the separation of photo-generated electron–hole pairs and enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. After five cycles of degradation testing, the composite material maintained degradation rates of 73.4 and 70.3%, demonstrating excellent structural stability and reusability. This study achieved synergistic enhancement of BiOI and photocatalytic performance through a simple yet effective composite strategy, offering new insights for designing highly efficient and stable visible-light-responsive materials for water pollution treatment. Spin-canted Mn–Mn coupling in symmetry-broken metal chloride dimer with dual-responsive luminescence and sensing

Zhou Guojun,Wang Pei,Ren Qiqiong,Zhang Nan,Lv Jin,Mao Yilin,Qiao Jianwei,Zhang Xian-Ming

Magneto-optical coupling provides a powerful alternative to crystal field engineering for modulating Mn 2+ luminescence. However, precise control over Mn–Mn coupling is hindered by the complex spin-electron super-exchange interactions. Herein, we report a symmetry-broken Mn(II) chloride dimer, (C 10 H 20 O 5 Mn)(CH 3 CN)MnCl 4 , synthesized through a crown-ether-assisted supramolecular strategy. The dimer features a 7-coordinated pentagonal bipyramid and a 4-coordinated tetrahedron linked by a distorted Mn–Cl–Mn bridge (129°), which promotes rare spin-canted Mn–Mn coupling and creates a novel Mn–Mn luminescent center. This center exhibits a red emission at 638 nm with an unusually short lifetime of 0.42 ms, which is attributed to the relaxation of spin-forbidden d – d transitions. Notably, the emission undergoes a 30 nm blue-shift upon heating (5–305 K) due to the thermal suppression of spin-canting, and a 40 nm blue-shift under applied pressure (0–20 MPa) resulting from reduced orbital overlap. This dual-responsive luminescence originates from spin-canted weak ferromagnetism, which induces a rearrangement of energy-levels by separating antibonding orbitals. Using this effect, we have demonstrated an optical manometer for real-time underwater depth sensing. These findings highlight spin-canted Mn(II) dimers as a promising platform for stimuli-responsive luminescence and reveal a new mechanism for d–d transition modulation.

Construction of succinoglycan riclin-Pt (IV) conjugates for carrying resveratrol: a potential tool for biomedical applications

Zhang Hongmei,Wang Pengge,Yang Yunxia,Zhu Daliang,Wang Yanqing

Succinoglycan riclin (RIC), a natural polysaccharide with diverse biological activities, was employed as a drug carrier to construct a novel nanoplatform. Polysaccharide-Pt(IV) conjugates were synthesized via esterification between the hydroxyl groups of RIC and a Pt(IV) prodrug, which was subsequently loaded with resveratrol (RES) to form the RES@RIC-Pt(IV) nanoplatform. The successful synthesis and physical properties of the complex were confirmed through multiple characterization techniques. Pt(IV) was significantly bonded to the polysaccharide chain. The drug loading capacities for platinum and RES were quantified using ICP-OES and UV–Vis spectrophotometry, respectively. The percentage of Pt content in RIC-Pt (IV) conjugates can be calculated as 11.71%. In vitro cytotoxicity assays revealed that the RES@RIC-Pt(IV) platform exhibited significantly enhanced toxicity against HepG2 and LO2 cancer cell lines compared to individual small-molecule drugs. These results demonstrate that this multi-drug delivery system achieves a potent synergistic anticancer effect, highlighting its potential for improved cancer therapy. Graphical abstract

Asymmetric Pt1C3-Pt1O1C3 catalytic pairs for efficient transfer hydrogenation of azobenzene

Fang Yiyun,Zhao Wen,Xing Zhilin,Chen Cheng,Zhou Xin,Cui Congcong,Wang Xuchao,Zheng Siming,Liu Qiyuan,Lv Diandong,Li Siqi,Chen Zhaohang,Rong Zi-Qiang,Guo Na,Li Xinzhe,Liu Bin

Atomic catalytic pairs (CPs) have shown great promise in driving multi-step catalytic transformations, yet the influence of spatial arrangement and coordination asymmetry on homonuclear CPs remain poorly understood. Herein, we construct atomically dispersed homonuclear Pt 1 -Pt 1 CPs with asymmetric Pt 1 C 3 -Pt 1 O 1 C 3 coordination anchored on reduced graphene oxide. By precisely tuning the spacing between the adjacent Pt 1 C 3 -Pt 1 O 1 C 3 CPs to approximately 5.3 Å, the catalyst achieves an exceptional turnover frequency of 27,218 h -1 for transfer hydrogenation of azobenzene via ammonia-borane hydrolysis, surpassing benchmarking catalysts by more than an order of magnitude. The Pt 1 C 3 -Pt 1 O 1 C 3 CPs separated by 5.3 Å can facilitate co-adsorption of sterically hindered intermediates and at the same time the asymmetric Pt 1 C 3 -Pt 1 O 1 C 3 coordination enables facile hydrogen shuttling and barrier-suppressed hydrogenation. These synergistic effects enhance the overall azobenzene hydrogenation efficiency. Our findings uncover a fundamental spatial design principle for atomically precise homonuclear asymmetric CPs, offering new opportunities for sustainable and efficient fine chemical synthesis.

Ultrasensitive Fluorescent Immunoassay for Aflatoxin B1 Detection Using SiO2 Nanospheres

Tian Yun,Gao Chunxuan,Zhang Dong,Li Chen,Shi Xingbo,Gao Wenli

Early detection and control of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination are essential for ensuring food safety. However, conventional analytical methods frequently encounter technical limitations including operational complexity and insufficient sensitivity. To overcome these limitations, an ultrasensitive fluorescent immunoassay detection of AFB1 was developed based on SiO 2 nanospheres. These highly dispersible nanospheres were utilized as carriers to co-load CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and AFB1-specific aptamers (Apt), resulting in the construction of SiO₂@QDs@Apt fluorescent probes with enhanced signal amplification (7.51 \(\times\) 10 3 -fold improvement in sensitivity compared to the QDs@Apt method without SiO₂ nanospheres). The assay achieved an ultra-low detection limit of 5.06 \(\times\) 10 –7  ng/mL and a broad linear range of 10 −7 ~10 ng/mL. Validation through standard spiking experiments and real sample analysis confirmed the method’s accuracy and reliability. This strategy demonstrated higher sensitivity than the commercial ELISA kit tested, suggesting its potential utility for trace AFB1 monitoring in certain food matrices. Overall, this simple, specific, and cost-effective strategy could serve as a sensitive analytical platform for AFB1 monitoring in food safety laboratories.

Ultra-stretchable and crack-resistant nonpolar organogels

Huang Zhenkai,Peng Jianping,Zhang Wei,Yue Kan,Wang Xun

The inherent low polarity and weak intermolecular interactions of nonpolar media impose a fundamental thermodynamic constraint on gelation. Despite recent breakthroughs in designing highly stretchable and tough hydrogels, developing organogels that absorb nonpolar organic liquids with comparable mechanical performance has remained elusive. We report an ultra-stretchable and crack-resistant nonpolar organogel engineered through an inorganic nanowire-polymer hybrid network, overcoming the elasticity-strength trade-off. This hybrid network can absorb and gelate diverse nonpolar organic liquids at mass absorption ratios reaching over 35:1. The resultant organogels exhibit outstanding mechanical properties, including breaking elongation up to 1600% and true fracture strength over 1.5 MPa. In addition, through dynamic strain-induced nanowire alignment during tensile deformation, the organogels possess outstanding crack and fatigue resistance (fracture energy up to 1.7 kJ m −2 and fatigue threshold up to 95.3 J m −2 ). These advances make our organogels ideal for nonpolar organic liquid solidification and spilled petrol recovery applications.

Diagnostic and therapeutic potential of serum fatty acids in hyperlipidemia: evidence from three cohorts of patients with coronary atherosclerotic heart disease

Cao Haiyan,Zhao Furong,Liu Hongbo,Huang Jingchun,Wang Shuang,Liu Haiwen,Liu Fang,Li Ying,Xia Yuanye,Wang Dongming,Li Bin,Zheng Ye,Liu Yu

Background Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAHD). However, conventional lipid profiling fails to fully reflect the complexity of lipid metabolism. Furthermore, while lipidomics has identified numerous complex lipids as biomarkers, the role of their fundamental constituents—serum fatty acids—remains less explored in CAHD. In this study, we performed detailed profiling of serum fatty acid species to explore their utility in improving the identification and management of lipid disorders specifically within the CAHD population, an approach whose clinical value in this context remains underexplored. Methods The study analyzed serum fatty acid profiles in three CAHD cohorts: a training cohort (n = 432) and two external validation cohorts (n = 1302 and n = 1458). Serum samples were collected during initial and subsequent hospitalizations. A total of 39 fatty acids were quantified using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Multivariate analyses were conducted to identify fatty acids with diagnostic relevance, followed by model development and external validation. Results In CAHD patients, several fatty acids were significantly correlated with total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and apolipoprotein B (Apo B). Among these, esterified linoleic acid demonstrated a strong correlation with lipid biomarker (r > 0.69, p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis identified esterified oleic acid (OR = 37.80, p < 0.001) and linoleic acid (OR = 10.74, p < 0.001) as independent significant risk factors for hyperlipidemia. The combined model incorporating these fatty acids demonstrated an AUC exceeding 0.94 (95% CI: 0.93–0.95) in both training and validation cohorts, with sensitivity and specificity exceeding 85.6% and 81.0%, respectively. Notably, during statin therapy, linoleic acid decreased significantly and was associated with favorable lipid-lowering effects, comparable to the rate of change in TC, with no significant difference. Conclusions Esterified linoleic acid (C18:2 n6) and oleic acid (C18:1 n9) were identified as key serum biomarkers for hyperlipidemia in CAHD patients, and their combination yielded the best diagnostic performance. Moreover, C18:2 n6 decreased during statin therapy and may serve as a useful marker for monitoring treatment response.

Modification of coal tar distillates based on Friedel–Crafts reactions

Niu Menglong,Zhang Lei,Niu Ben,Ji Yue,Xue Yongge,Zheng Jiabin

This study focuses on the composition characteristics of coal tar, which is rich in aromatic hydrocarbons, and employs long-chain olefins as alkylating agents for directional modification of molecular groups. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was used as the primary analytical technique. The optimal process conditions for the alkylation reaction were investigated. Experiments were conducted on the alkylation of light fractions to analyze the component migration law during the alkylation of coal tar fractions, as well as on the alkylation of hydrogenated heavy fractions to examine the effect of hydrogenation pretreatment on the alkylation reaction. Finally, a preliminary performance evaluation of the products from each fraction was carried out. The results indicate that the optimal process conditions for the alkylation reaction are as follows: using AlCl 3 as the catalyst, a reaction temperature of 100 °C, and a reaction time of 3 h. The main substances undergoing alkylation in each coal tar fraction were identified as monocyclic aromatics containing hydroxyl groups and a small amount of bicyclic aromatics. Meanwhile, hydrogenation pretreatment was found to inhibit the alkylation reaction, primarily because the hydrogenation process removes hydroxyl groups from the aromatic rings, reducing the reactivity of the substrates, and because compounds such as tetralin generated during hydrogenation promote hydrogen transfer, leading to the saturation of olefins. The performance evaluation results show that key indicators, such as the viscosity of the products from each fraction, were significantly improved, demonstrating promising potential for industrial application.

Disposable and sensitive nanostructured nickel oxide modified electrode sensor for point-of-care detection of acetaminophen

Zhan Mingfang,Li Jiayan,Alam Mohammad Jahidul,Akter Sima,Wan Hong,Mahmud Sakil

Acetaminophen (paracetamol, PA) is among the most widely used analgesic and antipyretic drugs, necessitating sensitive and reliable monitoring in pharmaceutical and clinical matrices. Although numerous PA sensors have been reported, many rely on complex nanocomposites or multistep fabrication, limiting reproducibility and scalability. Here, a minimalist yet highly efficient sensing strategy is demonstrated by electrodepositing a uniformly nanostructured nickel oxide (NiO) film directly onto a disposable screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). This rational single-step deposition yields a catalytically active surface with markedly enhanced electron-transfer characteristics. The resulting NiO/SPCE exhibits a linear response from 1.0 to 9.17 μM and a detection limit of 0.11 μM, outperforming many previously reported metal-oxide-based PA sensors. Morphological characterization confirms the formation of a smooth, compact, and homogeneously distributed NiO layer, while differential pulse voltammetry highlights excellent selectivity, minimal interference from common ions and metabolites, and strong operational stability. Together, these features establish the NiO/SPCE as a reproducible, low-cost, and high-performance platform for the precise determination of PA in pharmaceutical formulations and human fluids, with clear potential for integration into portable point-of-care systems.
