Managing oily wastewater under harsh conditions poses a significant challenge in environmental protection. Conventional membranes are often ineffective in treating oily wastewater under complex environmental conditions and typically fail to achieve complete oil–water separation. This work reports the preparation of a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) @ polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fiber membrane by in-situ growth of ZIF-8 on the rGO-coated PPS fiber membrane. The incorporation of the rGO increases the roughness of the fibrous membrane and enhances the bond between the polymer membrane and the ZIF-8 layer, as the oxygen-containing groups of rGO can interact with the Zn 2+ of the ZIF-8 precursor, facilitating the preferential growth of ZIF-8 crystals on the rGO surface. The resulting rGO/ZIF-8@PPS membrane exhibits underwater superoleophobic and under-oil superhydrophilic properties, endowing it with switchable oil-water separation capabilities (oil-passing water-blocking or water-passing oil-blocking). During the oil (chloroform)/water separation process, it achieves high efficiency (99.96 %) and flux (27,176 L m −2 h −1 ). After 10 separation cycles using either water or oil as the permeating phase, the membrane maintains a high filtration flux (20,500 L m⁻² h⁻¹) and separation efficiency (99.97 %). Additionally, it can efficiently separate a range of oil/water mixtures under different acidic and alkaline conditions, retaining excellent separation efficiency and flux even after 10 cycles. This composite fibrous membrane provides a novel approach for treating large-scale oily wastewater in harsh environments.

Photocatalysis driven by the visible light of solar energy has received considerable attention in the field of environmental remediation and clean energy production. In this work, monomeric sulfonated palladium phthalocyanine (PdPcS) was encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) crystals (denoted PdPcS@ZIF-8) through electrostatic interaction in the ammonia system, while their photocatalytic activity was well-maintained together with the structural regularity of ZIF-8 crystals. For comparison, a PdPcS/ZIF-8 sample was obtained from the traditional impregnation method. The13C NMR and UV-DRS spectra confirmed the difference between PdPcS@ZIF-8 and PdPcS/ZIF-8 in terms of the chemical environment effect for PdPcS. Under visible light, the optimal PdPcS@ZIF-8 catalyst achieved complete degradation of 0.1 mM bisphenol A in 120 min. It also exhibited excellent stability, retaining 81.5% activity after four cycles, far outperforming the impregnated sample (32.5%) due to effective encapsulation preventing PdPcS leaching. This versatile one-step synthetic strategy is expected to be useful for designing novel macromolecules@MOF composite materials.

Smart proton conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with dynamic remote control over proton conduction show high potential for use in advanced applications, such as sensors and bioprocesses. Here, we report a photoswitchable proton conductive ZIF-8 membrane by coencapsulating polystyrene sulfonate and graphene quantum dots into a ZIF-8 matrix (GQDs-PSS@ZIF-8) via a solid-confined conversion process. The proton conductivity of the GQDs-PSS@ZIF-8 membrane is 6.3 times higher than that of pristine ZIF-8 and can be reversibly switched by light due to photoluminescence quenching and the photothermal conversion effect, which converts light into heat. The local increase in temperature allows water molecules to escape from the porous channels, which cuts off the proton transport pathways and results in a decrease in proton conductivity. The proton conductivity is restored when the light is off owing to regaining water molecules, which act as proton carriers, from the surroundings. The GQDs-PSS@ZIF-8 membrane responds efficiently to light and exhibits an ON/OFF ratio of 12.8. This photogated proton conduction in MOFs has potential for the development and application of MOF-based protonic solids in advanced photoelectric devices.

With the vigorous development of nuclear power and the shortage of terrestrial uranium resources, the extraction uranium from seawater is extremely attractive for human development. Herein, we first report ZIF-8 in-situ growth on amidoximerized polyacrylonitrile (PAO) porous materials. The porous material is a small sphere with certain mechanical strength synthesized by solvent-induced phase separation method. Because ZIF-8 nanocrystals are well-formed and evenly distributed within the PAO beads, ZIF-8/PAO has a high specific surface area (386 m 2 g -1 ) and rich pore structure . At adsorption experiment, the highest adsorption capacity of ZIF-8/PAO reached 803 mg g -1 at pH = 4. Furthermore, competitive adsorption experiment and simulated seawater test was studied. The selectivity for uranium was excellent (K d = 1.7 × 10 5 mL g -1 ) and uranium adsorption rate reached 99% at 3 ug L -1 . XPS analysis shows that U(VI) is chelated by imidazole-N atoms and amidoxime groups in ZIF-8/PAO. Therefore, ZIF-8/PAO can be considered a highly promising adsorbent for uranium extraction from wastewater and seawater.

ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8), a kind of metal-organic framework material, is one of the most important energy materials and widely used in various fields because of its high specific surface area and excellent thermal stability. In this research, we synthesized ZIF-8 by
the traditional hydrothermal synthesis method in a purely methanol system. The obtained particles were ~250 nm in diameter with a rhombic dodecahedron morphology. Moreover, the prepared ZIF-8 materials exhibited good thermal stability and a large surface area. We also found that the rhombic
dodecahedral ZIF-8 enhanced the electro-optical (E-O) properties of nematic liquid crystal (N-LC) depending on the ZIF-8 doping concentrations. ZIF-8 in N-LC cells adsorbs ionic impurities and suppresses the screen effect, leading to a lower driving voltage and faster response time. At a ZIF-8
doping concentration of 0.05%(w, mass fraction), the N-LC cells showed the best E-O properties, including the lowest threshold voltage (V
th) of 0.92 V, the lowest saturation voltage (V
sat) of 1.31 V, and a short response time of 10.04 ms. However, above
a doping concentration of 0.05%(w) ZIF-8 aggregated in N-LC cells, affecting the arrangement of the LC molecules and trapping less impurity ions, which deteriorated the E-O properties of N-LC.

Composition-engineered Cu-doped ZIF-8 was designed for OA therapy. • Cu@ZIF-8 reduced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in chondrocytes. • Cu@ZIF-8 suppressed ferroptosis and preserved ECM homeostasis. • Intra-articular Cu@ZIF-8 attenuated OA progression in rats. Engineering metal–organic framework (MOF)-based materials with tunable composition and biological function offers a promising strategy for regulating pathological oxidative microenvironments. Herein, a composition-engineered copper-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoplatform, Cu@ZIF-8, was designed to modulate oxidative stress-associated lipid peroxidation and chondrocyte ferroptosis for osteoarthritis (OA) therapy. The incorporation of copper into the ZIF-8 framework enabled homogeneous elemental distribution while preserving the crystalline structure and high specific surface area of the MOF platform. In H 2 O 2 - and RSL3-induced chondrocyte injury models, Cu@ZIF-8 reduced intracellular ROS accumulation, alleviated lipid peroxidation, preserved mitochondrial membrane potential, restored GPX4/SLC7A11 expression, and maintained extracellular matrix homeostasis. Mechanistic studies suggested that Cu@ZIF-8-mediated ferroptosis suppression was associated, at least in part, with modulation of p38 MAPK/AKT signaling. In a surgically induced rat OA model, intra-articular administration of Cu@ZIF-8 attenuated cartilage degeneration, reduced oxidative and ferroptosis-related damage, and showed no apparent systemic toxicity under the tested conditions. This study establishes a composition-engineered MOF nanoplatform that links copper-doped ZIF-8 design with oxidative stress regulation, ferroptosis suppression, and cartilage protection, providing a materials-design strategy for OA microenvironment modulation. Traditional polyamide nanofiltration membranes are restricted by their permeance-selectivity trade-off and fouling intolerance, which collectively constrains efficient ionic separations. To address these, hydroxyl-rich core-shell ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized via tannic acid-mediated coordination (TA/ZIF-8), achieving polyphenol-tailored structural regulation. Herein, the TA/ZIF-8 nanoparticles were engineered to regulate polyamide membranes fabrication via vacuum-assisted filtration by confining interfacial polymerization. Critically, enhanced hydrophilicity and dispersion were induced by TA-Zn 2+ coordination, while monomer diffusion was restricted by the hydrogen bonding between TA/ZIF-8 and piperazine. Consequently, ultrathin polyamide layers characterized by striped/nodular morphologies and elevated roughness were formed. Modulated by the TA/ZIF-8 interlayer, the crosslinking density was reduced, whereas the surface hydrophilicity and electronegativity were simultaneously augmented. As a result, an exceptional water permeance (31.8 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) coupled with a high Na 2 SO 4 rejection (98.3%) and a superior Cl − /SO 4 2− selectivity (46.5) was achieved by the optimized membranes. Furthermore, the membranes demonstrated exceptional antifouling property, robust stability, and outperformed literature NF benchmarks. This work establishes TA/ZIF-8 interlayers as a scalable platform for transcending permeability-selectivity limits in antifouling desalination nanofiltration membranes.

Developing highly active, durable, and cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial for fuel cell commercialization through the use of non-precious metal alternatives to platinum. In this study, the tunable dodecahedral Fe-N-C catalysts were synthesized through controlled pyrolysis of Fe-doped zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) precursors. The optimized 5% Fe@NC-8 catalyst demonstrates excellent ORR performance with an onset potential of 0.92 V vs. RHE, a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.83 V vs. RHE, and a limiting diffusion current density (j d ) of 6.06 mA cm −2 , surpassing commercial 20% Pt/C catalysts (onset potential 0.89 V vs. RHE; E 1/2 0.81 V vs. RHE; j d 4.27 mA cm −2 ). It also shows strong durability, retaining 86.16% of its current after prolonged polarization (@0.80 V vs. RHE for 10,000 s) and minimal negative shift in half-wave potential after extensive cycling(@200 mV s −1 for 5000 CV cycles). The enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to (i) possessing a high specific surface area (319 m 2 g −1 ) and favorable porosity to maximize active site accessibility; (ii) having abundant active sites of Fe-N x , graphitic N, and pyridinic N as active catalytic centers; and (iii) forming N-doped carbon matrices to provide a conductive framework. These advantages boost the density of accessible active sites and thus remarkably improve the ORR catalytic activity.

In-situ ZIF-8 growth on polyester enables salt/auxiliary-free dyeing with weak acid dyes at room temperature, eliminating high-temperature high-pressure process. • ZIF-8 coating provides abundant active sites for efficient weak acid dye adsorption without salts or dispersants. • PDMS modification confers superhydrophobicity (153.6°), UV protection (UPF 59.58), and oil-water separation. • The composite fabric shows outstanding washing/abrasion resistance and maintains ∼100% separation efficiency after 20 cycles. Conventional polyester dyeing is energy-intensive, water-consuming, and reliant on salts and dispersants, while the finished fabrics lack multifunctionality. Here, we report a sustainable strategy that integrates clean dyeing with multifunctional finishing of polyester fabrics. This strategy is achieved via in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8. Alkali pretreatment introduces hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the fiber surface, which enables uniform ZIF-8 growth to construct a micro/nano-rough architecture with abundant active sites and positive surface charge. This architecture allows efficient adsorption dyeing with weak acid dyes at room temperature — completely eliminating salts, dispersants, and the conventional high-temperature high-pressure process. Subsequent PDMS modification imparts superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 153.6°), UV protection (UPF: 59.58), and excellent oil–water separation efficiency (∼100% after 20 cycles), while the dyed fabric achieves a color depth (K/S) of 8.75 with good fastness. Notably, this one-step integration of dyeing and functionalization eliminates energy-intensive steps, reduces chemical usage, and enables room-temperature processing. This work offers a green, low-carbon pathway for multifunctional polyester textiles with promising applications in oily wastewater treatment. MOF-derived ZnO/ZCS heterojunction for CIP degradation. • Quasi-Type-I alignment overcome by interfacial built-in electric field. • 94.66% CIP removal under visible light in 120 min. • Singlet oxygen identified as dominant reactive species. • Stable performance in tap water and surface water. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) resists biodegradation and accumulates in aquatic environments, threatening ecosystems and human health. Herein, a ZIF-8-derived ZnO/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZnO/ZCS) heterojunction photocatalyst was fabricated via a hydrothermal-calcination method. The composite inherits a high specific surface area of 36.05 m 2 ·g –1 from the MOF precursor, while the loaded Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S narrows the band gap to 2.52 eV (vs. 3.18 eV for ZnO) and extends the photoresponse to ∼550 nm. XPS binding energy shifts confirm interfacial charge redistribution and a built-in electric field that drives directional carrier separation, overcoming the recombination limitation inherent to the quasi-Type-I alignment. Under visible-light irradiation, the optimal 35% ZnO/ZCS achieves 94.66% CIP removal within 120 min (k = 1.85 × 10 –2 min –1 ), markedly outperforming pristine ZnO and ZCS (both <60%). It retains >80% efficiency after five consecutive cycles and >60% removal in tap/surface water across a wide pH range (2.323–9.653). Radical trapping and EPR experiments verify the generation of 1 O 2 , •OH, h + , and •O 2 – , with 1 O 2 identified as the dominant reactive species. LC-MS analysis reveals piperazine ring oxidation and methylation as the initial degradation steps. This work provides a robust MOF-derived heterojunction strategy for efficient photocatalytic antibiotic remediation. Download: Download high-res image (357KB) Download: Download full-size image

The selective detection of different metal-ion pollutants is of great significance for assessing water quality and investigating pollution sources. To address this issue, a composite suspension of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and β-cyclodextrin (ZIF-8@β-CD) and functionalized a prism-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with the suspension via drop casting has been prepared for the selective detection of Cu²⁺ in water. The interaction between ZIF-8 and Cu²⁺ is mainly related to ion exchange and coordination interaction, while the hydroxyl group on the surface of cavity-structured β-CD confers excellent selective binding ability with Cu²⁺. Based on these combined effects, the maximum resonance wavelength shift of the ZIF-8@β-CD-functionalized SPR sensor was 23.03 nm within a Cu²⁺ concentration range of 0–320 µM, while that was merely 5.12 nm for the sensor modified with ZIF-8 alone. Additionally, the introduction of β-CD produces a synergistic effect with ZIF-8, significantly enhancing the sensor’s selective capture capacity for Cu²⁺ relative to the tested interfering metal ions, including Cd²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺, Co²⁺, Mn²⁺, Ca²⁺, and Mg²⁺. Consequently, the resonance wavelength shift showed a good linear relationship with Cu²⁺ concentration over the range 0–80 µM, yielding a sensitivity of 0.2 nm/µM and a LOD of 4.35 µM. This study presents a novel, straightforward strategy for functionalizing SPR sensor interfaces to enable high-performance, selective detection of Cu²⁺, with significant value for aquatic ecosystem monitoring and freshwater resource safety. Membrane separation technology offers a promising energy-efficient alternative to the energy-intensive separation of alkenes from alkanes, yet existing membranes are generally constrained by low selectivity and high mass transfer resistance. To address this, we constructed hollow ZIF-67@ZIF-8 (H-ZIF-67@8) core-shell nanocages with staggered interfacial pores and sieve properties, and incorporated them into a polyimide to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Mechanistic investigations reveal that the hollow cavity of H-ZIF-67@8 significantly minimizes diffusion resistance and serves as a fast track for gas transport. In addition, the staggered interfacial pores induced by lattice mismatch at the H-ZIF-67@8 core-shell interface enable precise kinetic sieving of C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 . By synergistically intensifying the diffusion and sieving mechanisms, the optimized MMM with 20 wt% loading showed a C 3 H 6 permeability of 62.12 Barrer and a C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity of 33.52, thereby surpassing the 2003 Robeson upper bound. This work provides new insights for the molecular engineering design of next-generation high-performance gas separation membranes.
