Biomass based oxygenates modified Fe-Mn oxide with improved surface lattice oxygen mobility for the chemical looping-oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene

Kang Li,Guang Li,Zhiwei Zhao,Xiaohong Ding,Na Li,Shuqi Ma,Yulong Zhang

Chemical looping-oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) is a promising technology for ethylene production from ethane. Exploring low cost and high activity redox catalysts to improve ethylene yield in the field of CL-ODH of ethane is necessary. In this study, a mesoporous Fe 0.4 Mn 0.6 O x redox catalyst with tunable lattice oxygen mobility was synthesized by a green solid-state grinding method, which used biomass based oxygenates as pore-forming and carbothermal reducing agent. The Fe 0.4 Mn 0.6 O x -0.3 xylitol redox catalyst prepared by this method possessed excellent catalytic performance, the ethane conversion rate and the ethylene selectivity reached 54.23% and 92.42%, respectively. It has been demonstrated that the highly active lattice oxygen in Fe 0.4 Mn 0.6 O x catalyst plays a key role in the ethane catalytic conversion. The high concentration of oxygen vacancies weakens metal–oxygen bonds, thereby promoting the migration of bulk-phase lattice oxygen to the redox catalyst surface to replenish the surface lattice oxygen. This work provides insights into the effects of biomass-based oxygenate species and doping levels on the lattice oxygen mobility of Fe 0.4 Mn 0.6 O x redox catalysts during the CL-ODH of ethane.

Mixed valence Fe/Mn bimetallic MOF modified carbon fiber paper cathode designed for the degradation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole by inhomogeneous Electro-Fenton

Xiaoqiang Li,Xin Zhang,Xiaorui Zhang,Hao Lu,Jian Wang,Siyuan He,Xiaoxiao Duan,Yongsheng Ren

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), a widely utilized metal corrosion inhibitor in industrial production processes, has become a typical persistent organic pollutant (POP) in the circulating water of coal chemical pipelines. In this study, Fe/Mn bimetallic MOF materials supported on carbon fiber paper (PC) were employed for the first time as an electro-Fenton cathode (Fe/Mn@MPC) in a heterogeneous electro-Fenton system, achieving efficient degradation of MBT. Specifically, this novel cathode enabled 96.35 % removal of MBT within 2 h. The uniformly rough fiber morphology presented by the Fe/Mn@MPC cathode results in an increased electrochemically active surface area and reduced resistance. Remarkably, it maintains a very stable catalytic activity over a wide pH range (3–11) and after 10 h of continuous operation, which confirms that the bimetallic synergistic effect enhances the stability of the system. EPR and quenching experiments identified hydroxyl radicals as the primary active species. Based on HPLC-MS results, MBT degradation pathways involving sulfur oxidation intermediate cleavage and benzothiazole ring detachment were proposed. This work presents a promising cathode design for the treatment of thiol-containing wastewater and offers new insights into the efficient remediation of coal chemical wastewater.

Mechanochemically synthesized Fe-Mn binary oxides for efficient As(III) removal: Insight into the origin of synergy action from mutual Fe and Mn doping

Huimin Hu,Qiwu Zhang,Chao Wang,Min Chen,Mengfei Chen

Iron manganese oxide resources are widely derived from the geological structure , and their combinations play an important role in the migration and transformation of arsenic. Iron oxide and manganese oxide exist generally in a mixed state in Fe-Mn oxides synthesized via the well studied co-precipitation methods using potassium permanganate and manganese/iron sulfates. Herein, a newly designed Fe-Mn-O compositing oxide with Fe-MnO 2 , Mn-Fe 2 O 3 , (Fe 0.67 Mn 0.33 )OOH solid solution and FeOOH as the main components, simply through solvent-free mechanical ball milling pyrolusite (MnO 2 ) and ferrihydrite (FeOOH) together has been reported. Atomic-scale integrations by doping Fe and Mn with each other were detected and an adsorption-oxidation bifunctionality was achieved, where Fe-doped MnO 2 served as oxidizer for As(III) and amorphous/ground FeOOH acted as adsorbent first for As(III) and then As(V) from the oxidization. The maximal adsorption for As(III) could reach 44.99 mg/g and over 82.5% of As(III) was converted to As(V). More importantly, high removal ability of arsenic worked in a wide pH range of 2–10.5%, and 87.2% of its initial adsorption-oxidation capacity could be kept even after 5-cycles reuse for treating 20 mg/L As(III) with a dosage at 1 g/L. Together with the enhanced adsorption capacity by the milled FeOOH, surface electron transfer efficiency of the developed Fe-MnO 2 surrounded with Mn-Fe 2 O 3 has been studied for the first time to understand the oxidization effect to As(V). Besides the environment-friendliness of ball milling method, the prepared sample is quite stable without noticeable metal release into solution. Mechanism studies of arsenic removal by the as-prepared Fe-Mn-O oxide provide a new direction for improving the oxidation efficiency of MnO 2 to As(III) based on the widely available cheap Mn and Fe oxides, contributing to the development of advanced oxidization process in the treatment of waste water.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by Fe–Mn-modified MWCNTs for selective decontamination: Formation of high-valent metal-oxo species and superoxide anion radicals

Yanye Tian,Yu Li,Guang-Guo Ying,Yong Feng

The extensive presence of organic micropollutants in complex water matrices requires the development of selective oxidation technologies . In this study, a novel selective oxidation process was developed via the conjunction of FeMn/CNTs with peroxymonosulfate and successfully used to remove micropollutants such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and bisphenol A from aqueous solutions. FeMn/CNTs were prepared using a facile co-precipitation method, characterized using a series of surface characterization techniques, and then tested for pollutant removal . The results showed that the FeMn/CNTs had much greater reactivity than CNTs , manganese oxide , and iron oxide . The pseudo-first-order rate constant with FeMn/CNTs was more than 2.9–5.7 times that of the other tested materials. The FeMn/CNTs had great reactivity in a wide range of pH values from 3.0 to 9.0, with the best reactivity found at pH values of 5.0 and 7.0. High-valent metal-oxo species such as Fe(IV) O and Mn(IV) O and superoxide anion radicals were determined to be the reactive species and were responsible for the oxidation of SMX. These reactive species were selective; therefore, the overall removal performance of SMX was not obviously influenced by high levels of water components including chloride ions, bicarbonates , and natural organic matters. The results from this study may promote the design and application of selective oxidation technologies for micropollutant abatement.

A portable colorimetric sensing platform for rapid and sensitive quantification of dichlorvos pesticide based on Fe-Mn bimetallic oxide nanozyme-participated highly efficient chromogenic catalysis

Shi Gang Liu,Haoyu Wang,Qian Zhao,Wenli Gao,Xingbo Shi,Zhonghua Liu

Background Dichlorvos (DDVP), as a highly effective insecticide, is widely used in agricultural production. However, DDVP residue in foodstuffs adversely affects human health. Conventional instrumental analysis can provide highly sensitive and accurate detection of DDVP, while the need of bulky and expensive equipment limits their application in resource-poor areas and on-site detection. Therefore, the development of easily portable sensing platforms for convenient, rapid and sensitive quantification of DDVP is very essential for ensuring food safety. Result A portable colorimetric sensing platform for rapid and sensitive quantification of DDVP is developed based on nanozyme-participated highly efficient chromogenic catalysis. The Fe-Mn bimetallic oxide (FeMnOx) nanozyme possesses excellently oxidase-like activity and can efficiently catalyze oxidation of 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue oxide with a very low Michaelis constant (K m ) of 0.0522 mM. The nanozyme-catalyzed chromogenic reaction can be mediated by DDVP via inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Thus, trace DDVP concentration-dependent color evolution is achieved and DDVP can be sensitively detected by spectrophotometry . Furthermore, a smartphone-integrated 3D-printed miniature lightbox is fabricated as the colorimetric signal acquisition and processing device. Based on the FeMnOx nanozyme and smartphone-integrated lightbox system, the portable colorimetric sensing platform of DDVP is obtained and it has a wide linear range from 1 to 3000 ng mL −1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.267 ng mL −1 for DDVP quantification. Significance This represents a new portable colorimetric sensing platform that can perform detection of DDVP in foodstuffs with simplicity, sensitivity, and low cost. The work not only offers an alternative to rapid and sensitive detection of DDVP, but also provides a new insight for the development of advanced sensors by the combination of nanozyme, 3D-printing and information technologies.

Bimetallic Fe/Mn metal-organic-frameworks and Au nanoparticles anchored carbon nanotubes as a peroxidase-like detection platform with increased active sites and enhanced electron transfer

Xueming Dang,Huimin Zhao

A hybrid of metal-organic frameworks (Fe, Mn) and Au nanoparticles anchored carbon nanotubes (Au/MOFs(Fe, Mn)/CNTs) was fabricated by a facile one-step hydrothermal process. The Au/MOFs(Fe, Mn)/CNTs exhibit highly enhanced peroxidase-like activity, because of the increased active sites, the enhanced partial charge density and electron transfer among the Fermi level of MOFs, Au and CNTs, as well as the synergistic action of Fe and Mn. The hybrid nanomaterials with high catalytic velocity (V max  = 17.65 × 10 −7  M s −1 ) and affinity (K m  = 0.33 mM) for substrates of H 2 O 2 display a great detection performance in the range of 0.34–53.05 nM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.18 nM (S/N = 3). Based on the cascade reaction of the artificial peroxidase and glucose oxidase (GOx), the glucose was further better detected in a linear range of 0.005–0.3 μM with a LOD of 0.002 μM (S/N = 3). Notably, considering the regulated peroxidase-like activity by sulfadimethoxine (SDM) aptamer , the concentration of SDM ranging from 0.54 to 41.58 μg L −1 was also detected with a LOD of 0.35 μg L −1  (S/N = 3). The as-synthesized hybrid nanozymes hold promising applications as the multifunctional sensing platform in environmental and biologic target detection with the combination of corresponding enzyme or specific aptamer.

Simultaneous degradation of NSAIDs in aqueous and sludge stages by an electron-Fenton system derived from sediment microbial fuel cell based on a novel Fe@Mn biochar GDC

Shuai Zhao,Hanyan Li,Jia Zhou,Tawatchai Sumpradit,El-Sayed Salama,Xiangkai Li,Jianhang Qu

Electro-Fenton (e-Fenton) reactions boosted using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can degrade contaminants with high efficiency, the treatment is generally performed in the aqueous phase and the sludge pollution is ignored in such MFCs. In this study, a sediment MFC e-Fenton (SMFC-e-Fenton) system was proposed for the degradation of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in both aqueous and solid phases. A Fe@Mn-codoped biochar gas diffusion cathode was fabricated to produce hydroxyl radicals without any additional power input. The studied NSAIDs of ibuprofen (IBU), naproxen (NPX), and diclofenac (DCF) exhibited total degradation efficiencies (including aqueous and sludge phase) of 99.1%, 98.5%, and 80.6%, respectively, in the SMFC-e-Fenton system. Compared with sludge anaerobic digestion, the residual amounts of IBU, NPX, and DCF reduced from 10.2%, 24.6%, and 32.2% to 2.7%, 4.4%, and 8.5%, respectively, in the sludge phase. Moreover, the electricity generation and sludge reduction improved owing to the e-Fenton process. Using the SMFC-e-Fenton system, the effects of NSAIDs were reduced and the richness and diversity of the microbial community are maintained, improving the overall system performance. These results demonstrate that the SMFC-e-Fenton method is a high-efficiency, economic and environmental friendly technology for simultaneously treating NSAIDs in the aqueous and sludge phases.

Zhang Lei,Zou Zhuorui,Lei Zhang,Jia Yang

In this research, xylene was utilized as a simulated gas, γ-Al 2 O 3 pellets were selected as catalyst carriers, and FeO x , MnO x , CeO x , and CuO x were used as active components to analyze the synergistic treatment of VOCs–O 3 by low-temperature plasma combined with supported catalysts. Different metal oxides and other factors influence the synergistic treatment of VOCs–O 3 . The results showed that the catalytic effect of Fe–Mn/γ-Al 2 O 3 prepared by the equivalent volumes of consecutive impregnation method was better than that of Fe–Mn/γ-Al 2 O 3 prepared by co-impregnation method. When combined with low temperature plasma technology, high-energy electron collision reaction and oxidation reaction between free radicals occurs, which played a synergistic role in the degradation of VOCs–O 3 . The total removal rate of xylene was 94.88%, and the depletion rate of ozone was 84.1%.

A NASICON-typed Na4Mn0.5Fe0.5Al(PO4)3 cathode for low-cost and high-energy sodium-ion batteries

Xiao-Hao Liu,Wei-Hong Lai,Jian Peng,Yun Gao,Hang Zhang,Zhuo Yang,Xiang-Xi He,Zhe Hu,Li Li,Yun Qiao,Ming-Hong Wu,Hua-Kun Liu

Developing low-cost and high-voltage manganese (Mn)-based Na superionic conductor (NASICON) cathode materials have attracted extensive interest. The low capacity and cycling instability of Na 4 MnAl(PO 4 ) 3 (NMAP), however, limits its performance in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, a binary Na 4 Mn 0.5 Fe 0.5 Al(PO 4 ) 3 (MNFAP) is fabricated to ease the structural instability and, in turn, deliver an improved reversible capacity of 102 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C and a high energy density of 287.7 Wh kg −1 . The synergistic interaction of Fe and Mn in Na 4 Mn 0.5 Fe 0.5 Al(PO 4 ) 3 /C composite leads to a one-phase solid-solution reaction mechanism with high structural reversibility. Theoretical calculations have also been performed to explain the upshifted voltage platform of both Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ redox potentials. The rational design of NASICON-type cathodes by regulating their composition with dual metal ions provides new perspectives for developing high-performance SIBs.

Rational Design of 3D Urchin-like FeMnxOy@FeOOH for Water Purification and Energy Storage

Lu-Bin Zhong,Qing Liu,Jun-Qiu Zhu,Yue-San Yang,Jian Weng,Peng Wu,Yu-Ming Zheng

Three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like Fe-Mn binary oxide (UFMO) was designed and successfully prepared by a facile one-pot template-free method. The as-synthesized UFMO, having a high specific surface area of 142 m2 g–1, consisted of an amorphous Fe-Mn binary oxide (FeMnxOy) core and a well-aligned α-FeOOH nanorod shell growing radially outward. Based on the systematic analysis of products formed at different synthetic stages, a plausible two-stage growth process, fast nucleation followed by slow crystallization, was proposed to illustrate the formation of the 3D hierarchical nanostructure. The internal structure of UFMO can be manipulated by tuning the molar ratio of Fe/Mn. Owing to its 3D hierarchical morphology and heterogeneous surface chemical composition, UFMO can serve as a promising adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals from water and a potential electrode material for supercapacitor in the field of energy storage. UFMO was able to reduce the concentration of both As(III) and Cd(II) from 100 to 1 ppb at neutral pH with a dosage of 0.1 g L–1. The maximum adsorption capacities for As(III) and Cd(II) are 147.2 and 79.06 mg g–1, respectively. Furthermore, the fast gravimetrical separation from solution and good regenerability of UFMO implies a green, economic, and sustainable approach for large-scale water purification applications. UFMO also exhibited a high specific capacitance of 158 F g–1 at a current density of 0.5 A g–1 (20 A m–2) and good reversibility with a cycling efficiency of 90% after 1000 cycles in the electrochemical performance tests. In general, UFMO has great potentials in water treatment and energy storage applications, owing to its high performance, low cost, and environmentally benign nature.

Self-supported Fe,Mn-CoCH/NF electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Huiyu Sun,Xinyu Gu,Jun Yu,Nannan Zhang,Zhengying Wu,Jiawei Qiang,Zhongjie Song,Yukou Du

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as the core half-reaction in water electrolysis (WE), plays a decisive role in determining the overall efficiency of hydrogen production. Cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CoCH) has recently emerged as a attractive material for alkaline OER due to its robust structural stability. In this study, urchin-like CoCH was employed as a precursor template to synthesize Fe and Mn co-modified CoCH catalyst on nickel foam (NF) through Mn-doping and surface Fe-modification strategies (recorded as Fe,Mn-CoCH/NF). This optimized hierarchical structure enhanced the exposure of active sites and facilitated faster electron/mass transport paths. The incorporation of Fe and Mn effectively regulated the position of d-band center and facilitated a more efficient lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) for OER, thereby enhancing the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. Compared to the unmodified CoCH/NF, the Fe,Mn-CoCH/NF exhibited significantly improved OER catalytic activity, characterized by a substantially reduced overpotential (204 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) in alkaline electrolyte, alongside remarkable stability. Utilizing this catalyst, an overall water splitting (OWS) system was further developed, capable of driving efficient OWS at a low cell voltage (1.49 V at 10 mA cm −2 ). Furthermore, the unique hierarchical structure of Fe,Mn-CoCH/NF contributed to mitigating electrochemical corrosion and the toxic effects of Cl − during seawater electrolysis, enabling the catalyst to maintain excellent catalytic activity and stability even in alkaline seawater system.

Degradation of sulphapyridine by Fe-Mn binary oxide-mediated radical reactions

Wu Kang,Zhang Zhongliang,Hua Fei,Ye Zhou,Li Chao,Yao Youzhi

Sewage containing antibiotics is harmful to the water environment. Here, a newly prepared iron manganese binary oxide (FMBO) activated persulfate (PDS) has excellent performance for the degradation of sulfapyridine (SPY) in an aqueous environment. The effects of initial pH, SPY, PDS concentration and FMBO dosage on the degradation ability of SPY were investigated. When the pH of FMBO/PDS was 4.0 and the initial concentration of PDS was 2.0 mmol/L, the degradation ratio of SPY could reach 94.4%. In the system of removing organic pollutants by transition metal activated PDS, SO −• 4 and •OH radicals are generally generated, and •OH radical plays a major role. Through the identification of SPY intermediate products by LC/MS, the degradation mechanism was explored. The degradation pathway showed that the strong oxidation of FMBO and the activity of PDS promoted the production of hydroxyl radical and contributed to the degradation and transformation of antibiotics. This study shows that FMBO/PDS has high degradation efficiency in the degradation of SPY.
