Bimetallic nanocrystals with a branched shape have received great interest as catalysts due to their unique structures and fascinating properties. However, the conventional synthetic approaches based on the island growth mode often lead to the dendritic nanostructures with inhomogeneous and uncontrolled branches. Here precise control over the number of branches has been realized in the deposition of Pt on Pd seeds through the Stranski–Krastanov growth mechanism. Based on such a growth mode, Pd@Pt core–shell hexapods and octapods have been generated by a seeded growth with Pd octahedra and cubes as the seeds, respectively. We found that Pt atoms are initially deposited on the side faces of Pd seeds through a layer-by-layer epitaxial growth in the presence of oleylamine (OAm), leading to a local strain focused at their corners. These strain-concentrated sites promote the subsequent island growth of Pt atoms at the corners of the Pd seeds, resulting in the Pd@Pt core–shell hexapods or octapods. Both the Pd@Pt core–shell hexapods and octapods exhibit the substantially enhanced catalytic properties in terms of activity and stability towards a methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) relative to the commercial Pt/C. Specifically, the Pd@Pt core–shell hexapods show the highest specific (1.97 mA cm−2) activity and mass activity (0.52 mA μgPt−1) for the MOR, which are 5.8 and 2.6 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C, respectively. This enhancement can probably be attributed to their unique structures and the synergistic effect between Pt and Pd.

Abstract The present article introduced an natural enzyme-covered/amino-modified Pd–Pt bimetallic-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework (NAPPZ) for ultrasensitive and specific detection of glucose. The dodecahedral nanomaterial zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)-loaded Pd–Pt bimetallic nanoparticles endowed the composite with peroxidase-like activity. The modification with glucose oxidase (GOx) facilitated the rapid access of H 2 O 2 produced through glucose oxidation to the Pd–Pt nanoparticles vicinity reducing diffusion. GOx specifically catalyzes the transformation of glucose into H 2 O 2 , which then H 2 O 2 rapidly migrates to the Pd–Pt nanoparticles, catalyzing the oxidation of colorless o-phenylenediamine into the orange–yellow product 2,3-diaminophenazine. Based on the aforementioned cascade reaction, the NAPPZ and NAPPZ based on ChOx were utilized for detecting glucose in human urine samples and cholesterol in milk, respectively. The NAPPZ strategy presented a broad detection range (20–1100 μmol L −1 ) and a low detection limit (15.9 μmol L −1 ) for glucose, and the NAPPZ based on ChOx strategy approach offered a broad detection range (10–500 μmol L −1 ) and low detection limit (6.4 μmol L −1 ) for cholesterol. Therefore, this novel method holds significant potential in the areas of clinical diagnostics and food safety. Graphical abstract

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor, one of the most widely used gas sensors, faces significant challenges in achieving lower detection limit. Addressing this issue, the utilization and strategic design of bimetallic catalysts present a promising avenue. In this paper, Pd-Pt was in-situ grown on ZnO nanoflowers directly prepared on planar substrate and a sensor for detecting acetone was developed. The test results reveal that the Pd-Pt/ZnO nanoflowers sensor exhibits a remarkable 107.6 response to 100 ppm acetone at 350 °C, while presenting a rapid response (15s). Moreover, this sensor demonstrates excellent capability in detecting acetone at concentrations as low as 1 ppb, showcasing impressive gas-sensing performance. The response of the sensor to 100 ppm acetone is twice that of ethanol at the same concentration. The exceptional performance of the sensor results from its distinctive nanoflower structure and the catalytic effect of the Pd-Pt, which offers an extensive surface area and enhances the rate of redox reaction for gas molecules. This in-situ grown method has great potential for improving the gas-sensing performance in gas sensor.

Synthesis of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has received wide attention due to their sluggish kinetics, which limits the development and application of fuel cell technique. In this work, we report a versatile synthetic approach to prepare a series of small-sized Ag@MNi (M = Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru) nanocrystals with core–shell structures by a simple solvothermal method. According to characterization analysis, surface segregation of Pd was proved in the outermost layer with the Pd-rich shell layer, which can regulate the adsorption energy of *OH. Electrochemical results show that the onset potential and half-wave potential of Ag@PdNi nanocrystals (Ag@PdNi NCs) are 1.005 and 0.913 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively, with a Tafel slope of 55.31 mV dec -1 and strong ORR catalytic durability, which is similar to Ag@MNi (M = Pt, Rh, Ru) NCs and slightly higher than that of PdAg alloy nanoparticles (PdAg alloy NPs), PdNi alloy nanoparticles (PdNi alloy NPs), commercial Pd black and even commercial Pt/C, in alkaline medium. Density Functional (DFT) calculations show that the presence of Ag core effectively promotes the segregation of Pd atoms to the outer shell surface, where Ni provides better segregated substitution sites for Pd, which significantly improves the ORR activity and durability due to the electronic synergistic effect between Ag core nuclei and Pd shell can reduce the adsorption strength of OH ads .

This paper described a novel, facile and nonenzymatic electrochemical biosensor to detect hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). The sensor was fabricated based on Pd-Pt nanocages and SnO 2 /graphene nanosheets modified electrode (PdPt [email protected] /GCE). The electrochemical behavior of PdPt [email protected] /GCE exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward H 2 O 2 with fast response, high selectivity , superior sensitivity, low detection limit of 0.3 μM and large linear range from 1 μM to 300 μM. Under these obvious advantages, the constructed biosensor provided to be reliable for determination of H 2 O 2 secreted from human cervical cancer cells (Hela cells). Hence, the proposed biosensor is a promising candidate for detection of H 2 O 2 in situ released from living cells in clinical diagnostics.

In this work, ultrasmall Pd–Pt bimetallic nanoclusters with a uniform size of 2.0 nm monodispersed on β-cyclodextrin functionalized reduced graphene oxide (β-CD-RGO) were successfully prepared in aqueous solution at room temperature within 30 min without the need for any organic solvent or high temperature. The integration of β-CD and RGO was responsible for the formation of the monodispersed 2.0 nm Pd–Pt bimetallic nanoclusters. Inspired by the monodisperse, ultrasmall, and pristine properties of the Pd–Pt clusters, the Pd–Pt@β-CD-RGO nanohybrid displayed enhanced activity for methanol and ethanol oxidation in alkaline media in comparison with the commercial Pd/C catalysts. This facile and simple method is of significance for the preparation of bimetallic nanocatalysts with high catalytic activity on suitable supporting materials.

Fabrication of electrocatalyst for direct glucose fuel cell (DGFC) operation involves destructive preparation methods with the use of stabilizer like binder, which may cause activity depreciation. Binder-free electrocatalytic electrode becomes a possible solution to the above problem. Binder-free bimetallic Pd-Pt loaded graphene aerogel on nickel foam plates with different Pd/Pt ratios (1:2.32, 1:1.62, and 1:0.98) are successfully fabricated through a green one-step mild reduction process producing a Pd-Pt/GO/nickel form plate (NFP) composite. Anode with the binder-free electrocatalysts exhibit a strong activity in a batch type DGFC unit under room temperature. The effects of glucose and KOH concentrations, and the Pd/Pt ratios of the electrocatalyst on the DGFC performance are also studied. Maximum power density output of 1.25 mW cm −2 is recorded with 0.5 M glucose/3 M KOH as the anodic fuel, and Pd 1 Pt 0.98 /GA/NFP as catalyst, which is the highest obtained so far among other types of electrocatalyst.

Herein, we report the fabrication of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers supported Pd–Pt alloy nanoparticles (PAN/Pd–Pt) through a simple and reliable approach by combining an electrospinning technique and in situ reduction process. The resulting PAN/Pd–Pt membranes are composed of a well-defined fiber-like structure with uniform sizes. Pd–Pt alloy nanoparticles are well dispersed on the surface of PAN nanofibers and the composition of alloy nanoparticles can be regulated through adjusting the feed molar ratio of Na2PdCl4 and K2PtCl4. The obtained products are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The as-prepared PAN/Pd–Pt composite exhibits a remarkable catalytic performance towards the hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB). By tuning the composition of the alloy nanoparticles of the nanocatalyst, a turnover frequency (TOF) of 51.9 mol H2 min−1 (mol Pd–Pt alloy)−1 was achieved, much higher than Pd and Pt-based nanocatalysts. In addition, the as-prepared PAN/Pd–Pt composite nanofibers show good recycling stability, as the catalyst can be easily separated from the suspension system. The electrospun nanofiber membrane supported noble metal nanoalloy catalysts shows high potential to find applications for the development of hydrogen generation for clean energy.

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) provides an effective method for converting the two main greenhouse gases to hydrogen and carbon monoxide. In this work, Co-CeO2 and CoM-CeO2 (M = Ru, Pd, Pt) catalysts prepared by electrospinning technology were used for DRM. Due to the excellent catalytic performance of Pt itself, the CoPt-CeO2 catalyst had the highest DRM catalytic performance at 850 °C, with a methane (CH4) conversion of 94.12%, and remained stable in 24 h stability testing with almost no carbon deposition. The surface properties of the samples were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), temperature programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), temperatureprogrammed desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicated that part of the reason for the excellent catalytic performance exhibited by adding noble metals to the catalyst is closely related to the high dispersion of active metals. More importantly, the addition of noble metals significantly increased the medium and strong alkaline sites of the catalysts. The abundant oxygen vacancies in CeO2 itself and the increased alkaline sites of noble metals were conducive to the CO2 adsorption and dissociation and the oxidation of deposited carbon. Moreover, the addition of noble metals promoted the interaction between the active metal and support. The results of this study provide a reference for the design of high-performance Co-based DRM catalysts.

In modern agricultural practices, organophosphorus pesticides or insecticides (OPs) are regularly used to restrain pests. Their limits are closely monitored since their residual hinders the capability of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and brings out a threatening accumulation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh), which affects human well-being. Therefore, spotting OPs in food and the environment is compulsory to prevent human health. Several techniques are available to identify OPs but encounter shortcomings like time-consuming, operating costs, and slow results achievement, which calls for further solutions. Herein, we present a rapid colorimetric sensor for quantifying OPs in foods using TMB as a substrate, a multi-enzyme cascade system, and the synergistic property of core-shell Palladinum@Platinum (Pd@Pt) nanoparticles. The multi-enzyme cascade response framework is a straightforward and effective strategy for OPs recognition and can resolve the previously mentioned concerns. Numerous OPs, including Carbofuran, Malathion, Parathion, Phoxim, Rojor, and Phosmet, were successfully quantified at different concentrations. The cascade method established using Pd@Pt had a simple and easy operation, a lower detection limit range of (1–2.5 ng/mL), and a short detection time of about 50 min. With an R2value of over 0.93, OPs showed a linear range of 10–200 ng/mL, portraying its achievement in quantifying pesticide residue. Lastly, the approach was utilized in food samples and recovered more than 80% of the residual OPs.Keywords:Pd@Pt nanoparticles;organophosphorus pesticides;acetylcholinesterase;colorimetric detection;multi-enzyme cascade

Multidrug resistance (MDR) caused by overexpressed P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in cell membrane is the main barrier for clinical tumor chemotherapy. P-gp can pump the chemical drugs out of tumor cells depending on ATP-provided energy. Herein, a photothermal-driven intracellular magnesium ion (Mg 2+ ) regulation strategy is proposed to reverse drug resistance through constructing Mg 2+ - and doxorubicin (DOX, as model drug)-loaded bimetallic Pd@Pt nanostructure (DPd@PtM). Although DPd@PtM can deliver Mg 2+ into tumor cells through endocytosis, large amount of Mg 2+ releases outside cells. To this end, the photothermal effect of Pd@Pt nanostructure in the second near-infrared region is expected to activate the thermosensitive transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) channel for extracellular released Mg 2+ influx. Intercellular Mg 2+ accumulation suppresses tricarboxylic acid cycle to block intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production (cutoff energy supply for P-gp) and reduce O 2 consumption (downregulate P-gp expression), then inhibiting P-gp-mediated tumor MDR. Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate that DPd@PtM can open TRPV1 channel to elevate Mg 2+ level and then inhibit the P-gp activity to enhance intracellular DOX concentration for chemotherapy. It is believed that this photothermal-mediated tumor Mg 2+ regulation therapy based on reversing MDR is a promising strategy to kill cancer cells.

A general and facile method for water-dispersed noble metal (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt) nanocrystal modified MoS2 nanosheets (NM–MoS2 NSs) has been developed. By using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as a stabilizer, well-dispersed NM–MoS2 NSs with homogeneously deposited noble metal nanocrystals (NM NCs) can be synthesized in aqueous solutions. Due to the transition from the semiconducting 2H phase to the metallic 1T phase, the chemically exfoliated MoS2 (ce-MoS2) NSs have improved electrochemical activity. The partially metallic nature of the ce-MoS2 NSs and the catalytic activity of the NM NCs synergistically make NM–MoS2 NSs a potential electrochemical catalyst. For the first time, Pd–MoS2 NSs were used as an electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation in alkaline media. The results showed that Pd–MoS2 NSs have enhanced catalytic activity with 2.8-fold anodic peak current mass density compared to a commercial Pd/C catalyst, suggesting potential for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).
