Oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO 2-x is uniformly coated on the surface of carbon black substrates. • Ru nanoparticles are highly dispersed on the TiO 2-x support. • TiO 2-x efficiently regulates the electronic structure of Ru sites, thus significantly boosting the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. The exploration of low cost, highly active, and stable catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key to the future application of electrochemical water splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculation results reveal that the oxygen vacancies TiO 2-x can effectively modulate the electron structure of Ru, thereby extremely enhancing the catalytic activity of Ru. Experimentally, to form an integrated nano-heterostructure, a facile approach is designed for the fabrication of super dispersed Ru nano particles on oxygen-deficient TiO 2-x , simultaneously combined with carbon black (CB) as a conductive network. Benefiting from the rich active sites, the optimized Ru/TiO 2-x /CB exhibited excellent catalytic performance, with overpotentials of 56 mV and 112 mV for the HER at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively. Ru/TiO 2-x /CB demonstrates superior stability and rapid HER kinetics under both acidic and alkaline conditions. Our studies provide a facile and feasible strategy for constructing high-performance water-splitting electrocatalysts. Download: Download high-res image (260KB) Download: Download full-size image

Defect engineering and phase engineering are two powerful strategies for regulating the intrinsically sluggish electronic and ionic kinetics of TiO 2 to enhance sodium storage. However, synergetic control of the defects and phases in TiO 2 nanomaterials remains a major challenge. Herein, we clarify the phase and defect synergetic evolution regularities of self-supported TiO 2-X nanotube arrays (TNTAs) with different annealing processes, which amazingly demonstrate different characteristics from traditional TiO 2 nanoparticles. The phase composition and oxygen vacancy (OV) concentration tuning strategies are combined to systematically clarify how these two important synergetic factors influence the sodium storage properties of TNTAs. In particular, unique porous-wall black amorphous TNTAs annealed at 300 ℃ in air and core-shell black anatase TNTAs annealed at 600 ℃ in N 2 show the best sodium storage performance among all amorphous and anatase samples, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) kinetics analysis demonstrates that both pseudocapacitive and diffusion-controlled charge storage mechanism exist in the TNTAs. The correlations of the pseudocapacitive capacity and the diffusion-controlled capacity with the OV concentrations and phases are clarified in detail. Both the pseudocapacitive capacity and diffusion-controlled capacity are enhanced in samples with high OV concentration in the amorphous and anatase TNTAs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that a high OV density corresponds to a low sodium insertion energy and high capacity, which matches the experimental results.

The long-term clinical success of titanium-based implants is perpetually compromised by post-operative infection and suboptimal osseointegration. To address this dual challenge, we developed a defect-engineered, zinc-doped titania (Zn-TiO 2-x ) coating through a two-step process of micro-arc oxidation and subsequent alkaline reduction. This process endows the material with a profusion of oxygen vacancies (OVs), imparting significant absorbance in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. Upon 808 nm laser irradiation, this property translates into highly efficient photothermal conversion, which orchestrates a formidable, multi-modal antibacterial assault. The coatings exhibited exceptional bactericidal efficacy, achieving eradication rates of over 89% against S. aureus and 98% against E. coli . This potency stems from a synergistic trinity of hyperthermia via photothermal therapy (PTT), cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated through photodynamic therapy (PDT), and the intrinsic antimicrobial activity of released Zn 2+ . Concurrently, beyond antimicrobial prowess, the hierarchical porous microarchitecture acts in concert with the pro-osteogenic bioactivity of Zn 2+ to markedly enhance the adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). This study presents a versatile coating strategy for endowing titanium implants with dual therapeutic capabilities, opening new avenues for smart implants that actively combat infection and promote tissue regeneration.

As is well-known, it is a great challenge that the smooth TiO 2 nanospheres are coated by MoS 2 nanosheets to form the core-shell nanostructure owing to their poor interaction. Herein, we report 3D black N-TiO 2-x @MoS 2 core-shell nanostructures synthesized by a mild and effective strategy combined with a typical hydrothermal reaction and an in situ solid-state chemical reduction method followed by 350 °C calcination under an argon atmosphere. The prepared samples are characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction, Raman, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results suggest that the 3D N-TiO 2-x @MoS 2 photocatalyst is successfully doped with N and Ti 3+ , and simultaneously coupling with MoS 2 to form the core-shell heterojunction nanostructure. The N and Ti 3+ co-doped and hybrid heterostructures can effectively utilize visible-light and solar energy to degrade methyl orange and produce hydrogen. The degradation rate of methyl orange and the hydrogen production rate are as high as 91.8% and 1.882 mmol h −1 g −1 . To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first instance of combining MoS 2 with N and Ti 3+ co-doped TiO 2 , and the proposed photocatalytic mechanism will provide a new perspective for high activity photocatalyst in future.

Graphical Electrocatalysis : This work is about the development of the 3DOM Co/NPC@TiO 2-x ORR electrocatalyst. The unique TiO 2-x -based 3DOM structure and the synergistic between N, P co-doping and Co-decoration contribute to improve the ORR catalytic activity and stability. The proposed electrocatalyst exhibits an outstanding half-wave potential of 0.86 V in alkaline electrolyte. The resulting primary and flexible zinc-air batteries also deliver considerable performance. Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for high-performance air cathodes. Herein, a novel three-dimensionally ordered macroporous oxygen-deficient TiO 2 framework embedded with N, P and Co-tridoped carbon (3DOM Co/NPC@TiO 2-x ) is elaborately designed for ORR. This unique structure offers a high surface area, good mass transfer, excellent electronic conductivity, and stability. Moreover, the experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the synergistic effect of N, P co-doping and Co-decoration is indispensable to promote the ORR performance, yielding high O 2 adsorption energy and lowering the reaction barriers simultaneously. Accordingly, the ORR catalytic activity and stability of the proposed electrocatalyst are better than Pt/C in alkaline media. The resulting primary zinc-air battery delivers a high open-circuit voltage (1.50 V) and specific capacity (820 Wh kg −1 ) at 20 mA cm −2 . This strategy, combining macroporous oxygen-deficient oxide support with binary heteroatom doping, provides a new perspective for exploiting efficacious ORR electrocatalysts.

Graphical C@TiO 2-x photocatalyst with oxygen vacancy and carbon doping co-structure prepared by heat treatment is reported. It provides the possibility of regulating semiconductor photocatalysts to degrade pollutants in wastewater based on an integrated strategy. Oxygen Vacancy (OVs) and carbon doping of the photocatalyst body will significantly enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. However, synchronous regulation of these two aspects is challenging. In this paper, a novel C@TiO 2-x photocatalyst was designed by coupling the surface defect and doping engineering of titania, which can effectively remove rhodamine B (RhB) and has a relatively high performance with wide pH range, high photocatalytic activity and good stability. Within 90 minutes, the photocatalytic degradation rate of RhB by C@TiO 2-x (94.1 % at 20 mg/L) is 28 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 . Free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance techniques reveal that superoxide radicals (⋅O 2− ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) play key roles in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. This study demonstrates the possibility of regulating photocatalysts to degrade pollutants in wastewater based on an integrated strategy.

In light of the high energy consumption and substantial carbon emissions associated with traditional NH 3 production based on the Haber–Bosch process, the aqueous electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) offers a clean and sustainable alternative production route. Nevertheless, activating the N N bonds at room temperature is challenging due to the high bond energy, severely hindering the development and commercialization of the electrochemical NRR. Herein, we report a synergistic strategy for achieving efficient N 2 activation at ambient conditions that combines electrolyte engineering with catalytic site-modulated TiO 2−x nanofiber electrocatalysts. The synthesized TiO 2−x nanofiber electrocatalysts contained abundant intrinsic oxygen vacancies and were further modified with hydroxyl groups to create electron-rich Lewis acidic Ti sites. Additionally, BF 3 was engineered into the electrolyte microenvironment, and it could form adducts with N 2 , serving as a dynamic carrier for N 2 transport. The electron-rich Lewis acidic sites and the dynamic carriers exerted a ‘pull–pull’ effect on N 2 , thereby weakening the N N bonds. Through electrochemical performance evaluation, the designed electrocatalytic scheme achieved an NH 3 yield of ∼57.15 μg h −1 mg −1 and a Faradaic efficiency of ∼15.14 %. We anticipate that this methodology will provide new insights into the development of electrochemical ammonia synthesis, particularly in relation to multifaceted design.

Recently, some traditional oxide supports, such as nano TiO2 and ZrO2 with high surface energy, have been found to be partially reduced to generate oxygen vacancies and coordinatively unsaturated metal (Mcu) cations as efficient active sites for nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH). However, the primary challenge in their industrial applications is rapid deactivation because of coke, over-reduction, and aggregation under the reaction conditions of high temperature and reducible atmosphere. Herein, we reported that cost-effective and environmentally friendly Zr-doped TiO2 (TixZr1) prepared by a simple coprecipitation method can be used as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for PDH. Ti3Zr1 exhibited the C3H6 formation rate [r(C3H6)] of 0.6 mmol g–1 min–1 at 550 °C, which was 17 times that of pure TiO2, and a deactivation constant (Kd) 2.8 times lower than that of commercial TiO2. Moderate Zr doping promotes the generation of surface active lattice oxygen, which can be reduced at a relatively low temperature to form oxygen vacancies and Ti(Zr)cu–O acid–base pairs as the active sites for PDH, and their number is in line with r(C3H6) of TixZr1 catalysts. With the increase of the Zr doping amount, the bulk crystal phase of TixZr gradually transforms from Zr-doped anatase TiO2 to TiZrO4 via Ti2ZrO6 with enhanced thermostability, which can inhibit over-reduction and aggregation of the nano-oxide.

3D mesoporous black TiO 2-x /Ag nanosphere coupled with 2D g-C 3 N 4 sheet ternary heterojunctions are successfully fabricated through a facile evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process and photodeposition method, followed by a mild calcination (350 °C) under an argon atmosphere after an in situ solid-state chemical reduction strategy. The resultant mesoporous black TiO 2-x /Ag/g-C 3 N 4 ternary heterojunctions with narrow band gap of ∼ 2.27 eV possess a relative high specific surface area of ∼ 100 m 2 g −1 , main pore size of 6.2 nm and the highest visible-light-driven photocatalytic property for degradation of methyl orange (97%) and methylene blue (99%). The apparent reaction rate constants (k) of mesoporous black TiO 2-x /Ag/g-C 3 N 4 for methyl orange and methylene blue are ∼ 9 and 11 times higher than that of pristine TiO 2 . The possible mechanism is proposed, and the excellent photocatalytic property can be ascribed to the introduction of Ti 3+ self-doping and g-C 3 N 4 , which favor the visible light absorption and the separation of electron-hole pairs, the surface plasma resonance effect of Ag nanoparticle, and the mesoporous networks offer more surface active sites.

The necessity for high-efficiency, low-power room-temperature (RT) ammonia (NH3) sensors is particularly acute in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. However, conventional chemiresistive sensors frequently require elevated temperatures to initiate reactions, leading to high energy consumption and potential safety risks. Inspired by plant photosynthesis, this paper successfully designs a ternary S-scheme heterojunction for a photo-activated RT NH3 sensor. The design effectively mimics the efficient charge transfer process in photosynthesis, thereby significantly promoting the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers and enhancing the sensing performance. Experimental results demonstrate exceptional performance under illumination: a high response value of 1679% (representing a 20-fold improvement over the dark state), rapid response and recovery times of 2.1 s and 1.9 s, respectively, along with outstanding selectivity, excellent stability, and a detection limit as low as 17 ppb. This work demonstrates a novel, efficient RT photo-activated NH3 sensor and provides innovative insights into designing biomimetic, smart gas-sensing materials and devices.

TiO 2 photocatalysis has gained attention as a cost-effective way of degrading contaminants. However, it relies on UV excitation and experiences rapid carrier recombination. To address these drawbacks, novel xylan-based carbon dots@hydrogenated TiO 2 (CDs@TiO 2-x ) composited by direct Z-scheme heterojunction is fabricated as a visible light-driven photocatalytic material, which broadens the range of light absorption to visible light and suppresses the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The spindle-shaped CDs@TiO 2-x has C/N/O/S groups, positive charges, and oxygen vacancies on its surface, and can degrade 89% of methylene blue and 87% of methyl orange within 90 min, and 99% of rhodamine B within 60 min in visible light. It also eradicates 99.9% of E. coli in 2 h and 97.1% of S. aureus in 2.5 h. These performances surpass CDs and TiO 2-x , and exhibit advantages in similar composite materials. The degradation pathways of dyes and the specific antibacterial processes induced by ROS are thoroughly investigated through LC-MS testing and related enzyme activity assays. DFT calculations study the role of oxygen vacancies, heterojunction mechanism, and catalytic sites. This study has developed a novel nanocomposite with applications in both dye degradation and sterilization, offering insights for multifunctional materials based on photocatalysis and heterojunction.

Eliminated Ni particle size effects to isolate intrinsic SMSI effects. • Decoupled the roles of Ni sites and interfacial Ni-O v -Ti 3+ sites. • Exposed Ni sites serve as the primary sites for H 2 activation and hydrogenation. • Interfacial Ni-O v -Ti 3+ sites promote oxygenated intermediate deoxygenation. • Balancing Ni encapsulation and oxygen vacancies maximizes HDO activity. Efficient hydrodeoxygenation is essential for upgrading biomass- and coal-derived oils into high-quality fuels. Although strong metal–support interactions (SMSI) have been employed to promote hydrodeoxygenation, how SMSI-induced metal encapsulation and oxygen vacancy generation individually and collectively govern hydrodeoxygenation remains unclear. To eliminate the confounding influence of Ni particle size, a series of Ni@TiO 2− x catalysts with uniform Ni particle sizes but tunable SMSI strengths were engineered through tailored pretreatment strategies. Using a remarkably simple kinetic strategy, the mixed roles of Ni sites and oxygen vacancies were successfully decoupled, proving that Ni encapsulation inhibits hydrogenation while oxygen vacancies drive deoxygenation. Consequently, the catalyst with intermediate SMSI strength strikes an optimal balance by maximizing the density of oxygen vacancies while mitigating excessive metal encapsulation, thereby delivering the highest hydrodeoxygenation activity. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that interfacial Ni-O v -Ti 3+ sites enhance the adsorption of oxygenated intermediates and markedly lower the C–O bond activation barrier. The cooperative interplay between exposed metallic Ni sites and interfacial Ni-O v -Ti 3+ sites orchestrates H 2 activation and C–O bond cleavage, thereby enabling efficient hydrodeoxygenation and providing a design principle for SMSI-regulated interfacial catalytic systems.
