Persistent free radicals (PFRs) may cause negative impacts to human health and the environment because of the induced reactive oxygen species. We expect that PFRs could be generated in the condensable volatiles formed during lignocellulose biomass pyrolysis. Elucidating the structural origin and the formation mechanism of PFRs is important for an in-depth understanding of air pollutants from the pyrolysis or combustion of lignocellulose biomass. This work selected rice straw and pine sawdust to represent agricultural and forest biomass residues. The pyrolysis mechanism, volatile components, and PFR generation were discussed based on the analysis of thermogravimetry–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy–mass spectrometry (MS), pyrolysis–gas chromatography/MS, and electron spin resonance (ESR). Levoglucosan, furans, and 2-methoxyphenols were the main pyrolytic compounds for cellulose (CL), hemicellulose (HC), and lignin (LG), respectively. Obvious ESR signals were detected in the condensable volatiles of LG, while no ESR signals were detected for those of CL and HC. Higher ESR signals were detected in lignocellulose with a higher content of LG. Therefore, LG was the main structural basis to generate PFRs in lignocellulose condensable volatiles, mostly attributed to the methoxyphenol components. This study provides useful information regarding the generation mechanisms of and the structures related to PFRs, which is essential to understand the risks of lignocellulose pyrolytic volatiles.

Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is a promising lignin-first biorefinery strategy that yields a deeply depolymerized lignin and nearly theoretical amounts of lignin monomers with reductive catalysts. Theoretically, the immediate stabilization with a catalyst is a key step in the RCF process, but the experimental support is lacking and few researchers have investigated the timeliness of stabilization. In this study, an on-line catalyst addition device was used to realize the flexible addition of a catalyst at different times in a high-pressure batch reactor. It was found that immediate stabilization is definitely indispensable for high lignin monomer yield, and the timeliness of stabilization mainly depends on the occurrence of repolymerization. Fast repolymerization occured at temperatures from 200 °C to 250 °C and more seriously around 250 °C, suggesting that the RCF process can be realized as long as adding the catalyst occurs before the temperature reaches 200 °C. Further this proves the feasibility of splitting delignification and stabilization/hydrogenation processes, and explains the reason for the reaction temperatures used in effective semi-continuous RCF processes at lower than 200 °C.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production from biomass is a promising alternative to water splitting thanks to the oxidation half-reaction being more facile and its ability to simultaneously produce solar fuels and value-added chemicals. Here, we demonstrate the coproduction of H 2 and diesel fuel precursors from lignocellulose-derived methylfurans via acceptorless dehydrogenative C−C coupling, using a Ru-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 catalyst and driven by visible light. With this chemistry, up to 1.04 g g catalyst −1 h −1 of diesel fuel precursors (~41% of which are precursors of branched-chain alkanes) are produced with selectivity higher than 96%, together with 6.0 mmol g catalyst −1 h −1 of H 2 . Subsequent hydrodeoxygenation reactions yield the desired diesel fuels comprising straight- and branched-chain alkanes. We suggest that Ru dopants, substituted in the position of indium ions in the ZnIn 2 S 4 matrix, improve charge separation efficiency, thereby accelerating C−H activation for the coproduction of H 2 and diesel fuel precursors.

Abstract A lignocellulose-based composite hydrogel, as a novel biosorbent, was prepared for Cu 2+ removal from wastewater. TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN) were dispersed in a 7 wt% NaOH/12 wt% urea aqueous solution at room temperature. Meanwhile, the dissolved cellulose was obtained in the same system at subzero temperature. The composite hydrogels were prepared by blending the dissolved cellulose solution, TOCN dispersion, and alkali lignin solution in an NaOH/urea aqueous solution. The composite hydrogel exhibits excellent adsorption capacity for heavy metals, which can be attributed to the synergistic effects of physical adsorption (porous 3D structure) and chemical adsorption (active sites: carboxyl and phenolic groups). The maximum amount of adsorbed Cu 2+ onto composite hydrogel can reach 541 mg/g, which was achieved after 45 min. The adsorption behavior is well-described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich model (R 2 > 0.999). Furthermore, the composite hydrogel exhibits high-strength properties, indicating that the presence of TOCN and lignin contributes to mechanical improvements. Graphical abstract

Enzyme recycling by re-adsorption is one of the primary methods for reducing enzyme usage in lignocellulose conversion. This work proposes the combination of an engineered yeast strain that expresses β-glucosidase with enzyme recycling to reduce the amount of supplemented β-glucosidase in enzyme recycling experiments. Using the engineered strain, a slight increase in ethanol concentration was obtained after a 96-h fermentation of pretreated corncobs. Ethanol concentrations increased by 34.7% and 62.7% in the following two recycle rounds using the engineered strain compared with those using its parental strain without β-glucosidase addition. Furthermore, with the addition of β-glucosidase at 30 CBU/g cellulose, the ethanol concentration after two recycle rounds exceeded 90% of that observed in the first SSF round with the engineered strain at a high initial cellulase loading of 45 FPU/g cellulose.

Corncob with a high content of pentose-rich hemicelluloses shows great potential for furfural production. In this paper, an environmentally-friendly two-step process for furfural production was developed by the hydrothermal pretreatment of corncob and the heterogeneous catalysis of the hydrolysate using a solid acid catalyst. The hydrothermal pretreatment was applied to release hemicelluloses from the cell wall of the corncob, which were hydrolyzed into monosaccharide and oligosaccharide under the investigated conditions (160–190 °C, 0–60 min). Subsequently, heterogeneous catalysis of the hydrolysate obtained from the hydrothermal pretreatment was performed using SO42−/SiO2–Al2O3/La3+ as a solid acid catalyst at 150 °C for 2.5 h. The maximum yield of furfural achieved was up to 21% under the investigated experimental conditions from the catalysis of hydrolysates obtained at 190 °C for 60 min in the hydrothermal process. Moreover, there was no obvious change in the catalytic activity of SO42−/SiO2–Al2O3/La3+ after four runs, and only a decline of 5.28% yield of furfural was observed. This two-step process is an environmentally-friendly process for furfural production from pentose-rich biomass and serves as an effective approach for recovering the solid catalyst from the reaction medium.

The lignocellulosic pretreatment via deep eutectic solvents (DES) can be intensified by microwave heating (MH), but the intensification mechanism is still ambiguous. Hence, this study compared the pretreatment performance between MH and conventional heating (CH), and microwave intensification mechanism was disclosed by reaction kinetic study. The experimental results showed significant increase of pretreatment performance under MH compared to CH for different temperatures. Based on the shrinking core model, DES diffusion was the rate-controlling step for the initial stage of biomass dissolution, but surface chemical reaction dominated the subsequent stage. Benefitting from effective biomass deconstruction under microwave field (verified by SEM), the energy barrier for DES diffusion was reduced and the collision frequency between biomass components and DES was increased, so greater rate constants of DES diffusion and chemical reaction stages in MH-assisted pretreatment were obtained. Finally, the operating conditions of MH- and CH-assisted pretreatment were optimized by response surface methodology.

The rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the slow electron transfer rate at the catalyst-solution interface seriously limit hydrogen production from α-cellulose photoreforming. Herein, a sulfur-vacancy-enriched ZnIn 2 S 4 (S VH -ZIS) photocatalyst was prepared, and Pt nanoclusters were grown on its surface by in situ photodeposition. Sulfur vacancies coupling Pt nanoclusters optimize the electron transport channel and realize efficient electron migration from α-cellulose to H + through the photocatalyst. The construction of sulfur vacancies promoted the formation of ·OH and enhanced the adsorption and activation of glucose, which significantly improved the oxidation of α-cellulose and accelerated the oxidation kinetics of α-cellulose. Meanwhile, the sulfur vacancies promote the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and broaden the absorption wavelength range of light. Pt clusters provide hydrogen evolution reaction sites and achieve spatial separation of oxidation and reduction reaction sites. As a result, the hydrogen yield of α-cellulose photoreforming catalyzed by 0.25 % Pt/S VH -ZIS reached 522.76 μmol/g/h, which was 6.02 times that of 0.25 % Pt/S VL -ZIS (sulfur-vacancy-poor ZIS) and significantly higher than that of most previously reported photocatalysts.

Although previous studies have shown that microorganisms can decompose crop straw to enhance soil fertility and crop yield, the effects of different treatment methods on the decomposition of returned straw, as well as the mechanisms underlying these effects, require clarification. A corn straw returning experiment was conducted using potassium persulfate (PS) and inoculation of quorum sensing-producing bacteria (RH) to explore the effects of different treatment methods on the decomposition of straw and the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that RH promoted the decomposition of straw more than PS based on the weight loss rate (68.4 % RH > 58.7 % PS > 43.8 % CK) and the lignocellulose content (51.2 % CK > 42.4 % PS > 34.6 % RH). RH enhanced communication and cooperation within bacterial communities and increased the expression of lignocellulose-degrading genes ( manA , egl and cbhA ) through fatty acid biosynthesis and two-component systems, which promoted enzyme production and accelerated the decomposition of returned straw. These findings enhance our understanding of how lignocellulose decomposition is precisely regulated in soil, aid the management and utilization of agricultural solid waste, and have implications for the sustainability of agroecosystems.

The massive discharged of kenaf degumming wastewater posed severe environmental challenges due to its high solid waste content (more than 90% parenchyma cells (PCs) and a small number of fiber cells), yet current treatment strategies primarily focus on reducing chemical oxygen demand (COD) while neglecting the valorization of these solids. To address this gap, this study proposed a sustainable approach to repurpose PCs (abundant yet underutilized sheet structure lignocellulosic solid waste) into high-strength lignocellulose film. A hierarchical physical screening method was developed to isolate PCs from wastewater, followed by high pressure solid-liquid separation and filtration equipment to fabricate lignocellulose film. The natural sheet morphology of PCs (50–500 μm length and 25–250 μm width) facilitated dense brick-layer stacking, enabling exceptional dry strength (27.4 MPa) and modulus (4.84 GPa). Notably, the PCs film retained 30.28% dry strength (7.51 MPa) under wet conditions, outperforming conventional paper (14.32% retention). Further modification via nano-silica (NS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) enhanced interfacial interactions through hydrogen bonding and Si-O-C/Si-O-Si covalent grafting, achieving a tensile strength of 49.44 MPa (increase by 40%) and modulus of 6.72 GPa (increase by 39%). Thermal stability analysis revealed a maximum decomposition temperature of 354.41 °C, attributable to the synergistic effects of NS inorganic reinforcement and GPTMS crosslinking. Comparative evaluations against 8 commercial papers demonstrated excellent mechanical properties. This work pioneered the conversion of solid waste from kenaf degumming waste into functional cellulose films, offering a dual solution for pollution mitigation and sustainable material innovation in packaging.

Natural wood, a porous lignocellulosic resource, is an ideal precursor for carbon frameworks owing to its renewability. However, achieving a high electromagnetic shielding effectiveness poses a tremendous challenge for lignocellulose-based carbon framework. Herein, we developed a new material (FeNi-SnOx/CW) by embedding FeNi alloy and SnOx nanoparticles in carbonized lignocellulose framework (CW) from delignified wood using interface engineering modification. The CW acted as a conductive scaffold, while FeNi-SnOx enhanced polarization and magnetoelectric properties. Due to the synergistic effect of multiple mechanisms, the FeNi-SnOx/CW achieved excellent conductivity (437.3 S/m) and high saturation magnetization (13.33 emu/g). It also demonstrated a high EMI SE of 91.2 dB and a high ratio of SE A /SE T up to 85 % across the X-band at 2 mm thickness. Significantly, the interface engineering modification has resulted in a 59.2 dB enhancement in the EMI SE properties of the composite material compared to the pure CW (32.0 dB). Surface hydrophobicity modification with PDMS of the FeNi-SnOx/CW composite had a negligible impact on its EMI SE, thereby highlighting its practical potential. This research shows the benefits of FeNi-SnOx in boosting EMI shielding and offers a way to use renewable wood-based lignocellulose for high-performance EMI shielding materials.

The development of lignocellulose-based bioplastic is still a challenge mainly due to their high crystallinity and extensive hydrogen bond network. Sustainable modification strategies are thus essential and vital currently. Here, we proposed a thermoplasticization process by combining carboxylation and subsequent grafting with quaternary ammonium based on electrostatic interaction. Continuous steam exploded sisal fibers (SFs) was firstly carboxylated with periodate and sodium chlorite, and then grafted with cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). A higher yield (∼90 %) of carboxylated SFs (CSFs) at a lower dosage of periodate was achieved, which implied the cost-effective of this strategy. The CSFs grafted with CTAB (CCSFs) showed an obvious secondary relaxation between 50 – 90 °C, and could be hot-pressed into transparent sheets. The tensile strength of hot-pressed sheet reached a maximum of 27.8 MPa at the weight ratios of 0.2 (periodate/SFs) and 1.0 (CTAB/CSFs). The interface bonding between CCSFs was investigated by scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope, which revealed the effect mechanism of the dosage of periodate and CTAB on mechanical properties of hot-pressed sheets. This strategy represents a potential green and sustainable route to produce lignocellulose-based bioplastic in industry.
