Adjusting the Si/Al ratio of high silica zeolites for efficient ethane and ethylene separation

Ye Li,Yong Wang,Honghao Bai,Shishuai Li,Xiaomin Li,Xiaoqing Wang,Libo Li,Jinping Li,Jiangfeng Yang

The economically efficient separation of ethane (C 2 H 6 )/ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) presents challenges in the petrochemical industry, and the use of traditional adsorbents zeolite provides a reliable guarantee for maintaining the economic viability of adsorption separation technology. In this study, we investigate the impact of different silica-alumina ratios (SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3  = 40, 500, and 1500) of high silica zeolites ZSM-11 on the C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 separation performance to develop efficient C 2 H 6 selective adsorbents. The results show that the C 2 H 6 adsorption capacity and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity of ZSM-11 increase as the silica-alumina ratios increases. The pure silica zeolite (ZSM-11(1500)) exhibits the highest adsorption capacity for C 2 H 6 (59.19 cm 3 /g) and the highest selectivity for C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 (2.04), which were superior to ultra-high silica sample (ZSM-11(500)) (55.06 cm 3 /g and 1.62, respectively) and high silica sample (ZSM-11(40)) (47.28 cm 3 /g and 1.23, respectively), at 273 K and 1 bar. The mixed gas breakthrough experiments results show that pure silica sample has outstanding C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 separation ability. The PSA simulation calculated data demonstrating promising potential for industrial applications. Importantly, this separation performance remains unaffected even in the presence of H 2 O.

Regeneration of Spent Lithium Manganate Batteries into Al-Doped MnO2 Cathodes toward Aqueous Zn Batteries

Linghong Zhang,Yi Liao,Meng Ye,Wenqin Cai,Meng Xiao,Changyan Hu,Benhe Zhong,Fang Wan,Xiaodong Guo

Large quantities of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) will inevitably be generated in the near future because of their wide application in many fields. It will cause not only resource waste but also environmental pollution if these spent batteries are not properly handled. Until now, the recycling of spent lithium manganate batteries has centered on high-valuable elements such as lithium; however, manganese element and current collector Al foil have not yet attracted wide attention. In this work, aluminum-doped manganese dioxide was synthesized by overall recycling cathode active materials and current collector Al foil from a spent lithium manganate battery. Employing such aluminum-doped manganese dioxide as the cathode material of aqueous Zn batteries, it displays better electrochemical performance than manganese dioxide prepared by only recycling the cathode active materials. The overall recycling not only simplifies the recycling process but also realizes high-value recycling of spent lithium manganate batteries. We offer new tactics for overall recycling of cathodes from spent LIBs and designing high-performance manganese dioxide cathodes for aqueous Zn batteries.

High-Energy Composite Fuels with Improved Combustion Efficiency by Using AlH3 Embedded with Al Particles

Ming-Hui Yu,RuiXuan Xu,Wu-Xi Xie,Ya-Jin Li,Hong-Qi Nie,Qi-Long Yan

Aluminum hydride (AlH3) has attracted much attention due to its potential to replace aluminum (Al) as a novel energetic material in solid propellants. In this research, ammonium perchlorate (AP) and perfluoropolyether (PFPE) as functionalized coatings and a combination of acoustic resonance and spray drying technology have been employed to prepare AlH3@Al@AP (AHAPs) and AlH3@Al@AP@PFPE (AHAPs-F) energetic composite particles. The formulations of composite propellants and modified AlH3 particles were designed and fabricated. Their thermal reactivity, reaction heat, density, vacuum stability, combustion performance, and condensed combustion products (CCPs) have been systematically investigated. The results show that the solid propellants containing AHAPs (SP13) and AHAPs-F (SP14) composites can significantly enhance the reactivity and energy output compared to conventional solid propellants with the mechanical mixture Al/AlH3 (SP12). In particular, the total heat releases of SP13 and SP14 are almost 1.2 and 1.7 times higher than those of conventional ones (SP12, 1442 J g–1), respectively. Among the AlH3-based propellants, SP14 propellants exhibit the highest reaction heat of 5887 J g–1, the most intensive flame radiation of 31.4 × 103, and the highest combustion wave temperature of 2495 °C. Moreover, the particle size distribution of CCPs from SP14 propellants is much narrower and smaller than that of SP12, resulting in higher combustion efficiency.

Bifunctional Al-Doped Cobalt Ferrocyanide Nanocube Array for Energy-Saving Hydrogen Production via Urea Electrolysis

Xiafei Gao,Mengyue Gao,Xueping Yu,Xiaoyong Jin,Gang Ni,Juan Peng

The very slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) greatly limits the development of large-scale hydrogen production via water electrolysis. By replacing OER with an easier urea oxidation reaction (UOR), developing an HER/UOR coupling electrolysis system for hydrogen production could save a significant amount of energy and money. An Al-doped cobalt ferrocyanide (Al-Co2Fe(CN)6) nanocube array was in situ grown on nickel foam (Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF). Due to the unique nanocube array structure and regulated electronic structure of Al-Co2Fe(CN)6, the as-prepared Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF electrode exhibited outstanding catalytic activities and long-term stability to both UOR and HER. The Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF electrode needed potentials of 0.169 V and 1.118 V (vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode) to drive 10 mA cm−2for HER and UOR, respectively, in alkaline conditions. Applying the Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF to a whole-urea electrolysis system, 10 mA cm−2was achieved at a cell voltage of 1.357 V, which saved 11.2% electricity energy compared to that of traditional water splitting. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the boosted UOR activity comes from Co sites with Al-doped electronic environments. This promoted and balanced the adsorption/desorption of the main intermediates in the UOR process. This work indicates that Co-based materials as efficient catalysts have great prospects for application in urea electrolysis systems and are expected to achieve low-cost and energy-saving H2production.Keywords:hydrogen;urea oxidation;electronic structure;energy-saving;cobalt ferrocyanide

Preparation of graphene/Al composites with a lamellar structure by silane cross-linking graphene oxide

Bohan Wang,Jiaming Liu,Shipeng Yue,Xianlong Wang,Yubo Zhang,Ying Fu,Tingju Li,Tongmin Wang

In this study, the silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) was used to cross-link graphene oxide (GO) to large-sized films, and further to prepare nacre-like structure graphene/aluminum (Al) composites. The results show that APS was successfully grafted onto the GO, forming large continuous GO films, which were then attached to the surface of the Al flakes by semi-powder metallurgy. After hot pressing, the graphene/Al composites had a lamellar structure consisted of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Al. In addition, the interface was well bonded without defects and Al 4 C 3 phase. Compared with the pure Al prepared under the same condition, the compressive strength, maximum compression ratio and hardness of the 0.15 wt.% graphene/Al composites increased by 58%, 23% and 64.8%, respectively. The approach of cross-linking GO through chemical modification can be applied to the design of other bioinspired materials.

Multifunctional Mg/Al layered double hydroxides intercalated by sorbate anion via low-cost co-precipitation

Yuze Zhang,Lijuan Li,Dong Shi,Fugen Song

Layered double hydroxides intercalated with sorbate anion (SLDHs) was a potential material for sorbic acid controlled-releasing, UV barrier, reinforcement of rubber and flame retardancy filler. The addition reactions of sorbate anion (SAa) with ethylene and H radical were calculated as spontaneous on B3LYP/6–311++ (d, p) theory level by GAMESS-US and the electrostatic potential (ESP) of SAa was calculated by Multiwfn package and figured by VMD. SLDHs was successfully synthesized by co-precipitation with chlorides, and intercalating way of SAa was first constructed by electrostatic potential analysis, and then the successful intercalation of SAa was confirmed by X-ray diffractions (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). SLDHs possessed assembled flaky morphology and have good thermal stability with a water contact angle near 95°. This study may have a significance on the promotion of the scale application of SLDHs practically.

Nanosheet-stacked flake graphite for high-performance Al storage in inorganic molten AlCl3–NaCl salt

Wang Jun-xiang,Tu Ji-guo,Jiao Han-dong,Zhu Hong-min

Aluminum storage systems with graphite cathode have been greatly promoting the development of state-of-the-art rechargeable aluminum batteries over the last five years; this is due to the ultra-stable cycling, high capacity, and good safety of the systems. This study discussed the change of electrochemical behaviors caused by the structural difference between flake graphite and expandable graphite, the effects of temperature on the electrochemical performance of graphite in low-cost AlCl 3 –NaCl inorganic molten salt, and the reaction mechanisms of aluminum complex ions in both graphite materials by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanostatic charge–discharge measurements. It was found that flake graphite stacked with noticeably small and thin graphene nanosheets exhibited high capacity and fairly good rate capability. The battery could achieve a high capacity of ∼219 mA hg −1 over 1200 cycles at a high current density of 5 Ag −1 , with Coulombic efficiency of 94.1%. Moreover, the reaction mechanisms are clarified: For the flake graphite with small and thin graphene nanosheets and high mesopore structures, the reaction mechanism consisted of not only the intercalation of \({\rm{AlCl}}_4^ - \) anions between graphene layers but also the adsorption of \({\rm{AlCl}}_4^ - \) anions within mesopores; however, for the well-stacked and highly parallel layered large-size expandable graphite, the reaction mechanism mainly involved the intercalation of \({\rm{AlCl}}_4^ - \) anions.

Damping capacity of Al–12Si composites effected by negative thermal expansion of Y2W3O12 particle inclusions

Chenguang Liu,Liming Yu,Zongqing Ma,Yongchang Liu,Chenxi Liu,Huijun Li,Hui Wang

Effects of Y 2 W 3 O 12 particle inclusions and content on damping capacity of Al–12Si composites have been investigated. The Y 2 W 3 O 12 , which is a kind of negative thermal expansion material, can generate high local strain in the composites. Thermal expansion testing shows that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of Y 2 W 3 O 12 has obvious changes between 100 and 200 °C The Y 2 W 3 O 12 /Al–12Si composites show damping peaks and display higher damping capacities than the pure Al–12Si alloy. The damping capacities of composites strongly depends on the content of Y 2 W 3 O 12 inclusions. A thermal strain damping model is also established. Based on the model analysis results, there is a significant contribution of thermal strain to the damping capacity in the composites; the change in CTE of Y 2 W 3 O 12 could cause the generation of damping peaks. Moreover, dislocation damping and interfacial damping are also main damping mechanisms in the investigated composites.

Self-Assembled Al Nanostructure/ZnO Quantum Dot Heterostructures for High Responsivity and Fast UV Photodetector

Liu Sisi,Li Ming-Yu,Zhang Jianbing,Su Dong,Huang Zhen,Kunwar Sundar,Lee Jihoon

AbstractSection Highlights High performance Al nanostructures/ZnO quantum dots heterostructure photodetectors with a controllable geometry of the Al nanostructures are demonstrated. Light utilization of the photoactive layers is significantly boosted with the Al nanostructures. The light confinement effect is inherently determined by the geometries of the Al nanostructures. AbstractSection Abstract Light confinement induced by spontaneous near-surface resonance is inherently determined by the location and geometry of metallic nanostructures (NSs), offering a facile and effective approach to break through the limitation of the light-mater interaction within the photoactive layers. Here, we demonstrate high-performance Al NS/ZnO quantum dots (Al/ZnO) heterostructure UV photodetectors with controllable morphologies of the self-assembled Al NSs. The Al/ZnO heterostructures exhibit a superior light utilization than the ZnO/Al heterostructures, and a strong morphological dependence of the Al NSs on the optical properties of the heterostructures. The inter-diffusion of Al atoms into ZnO matrixes is of a great benefit for the carrier transportation. Consequently, the optimal photocurrent of the Al/ZnO heterostructure photodetectors is significantly increased by 275 times to ~ 1.065 mA compared to that of the pristine ZnO device, and an outstanding photoresponsivity of 11.98 A W −1 is correspondingly achieved under 6.9 mW cm −2 UV light illumination at 10 V bias. In addition, a relatively fast response is similarly witnessed with the Al/ZnO devices, paving a path to fabricate the high-performance UV photodetectors for applications.

Importance of controllable Al sites in CHA framework by crystallization pathways for NH3-SCR reaction

Juan Zhang,Yulong Shan,Ling Zhang,Jinpeng Du,Hong He,Shichao Han,Chi Lei,Sen Wang,Weibin Fan,Zhaochi Feng,Xiaolong Liu,Xiangju Meng,Feng-Shou Xiao

As a commerical catalyst of high silica CHA zeolite for NH 3 -SCR reaction, controllable Al sites in CHA framework for improving catalytic performance are rarely reported. In this work, two organic templates (TMAda + and DMCHA + ) were employed to prepare aluminosilicate CHA zeolite with similar Si/Al ratios, donated as CHA-T and CHA-D. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that two completely distinguishable crystallization pathways can be identified as the preferential formation of smaller D6R units for CHA-D with DMCHA + and larger 8MRs for CHA-T with TMAda + , resulting in spatially closer Al sites in CHA-D than CHA-T. As an interpretation, CHA-D with more paired Al atoms in 6MR generating more hydrothermally stable Cu 2+ -2Z sites contributes to higher activity than CHA-T at 400−550 °C. These results suggest that the crystallization pathways directed by rational choice of organic templates might be responsible for the controllable Al sites in the framework, which is important for designing efficient NH 3 -SCR catalysts.

Adsorption of humic acid from aqueous solution by magnetic Zn/Al calcined layered double hydroxides

Shaoxiu Li,Yuhe Yang,Su Huang,Zhifeng He,Changhui Li,Dongmei Li,Bohan Ke,Chan Lai,Qiuyi Peng

Magnetic Zn/Al layered double hydroxides (M Zn/Al LDH) were prepared by co-precipitation method and then calcined at 370 °C for 2 h to obtain magnetic Zn/Al calcined layered double hydroxides (M Zn/Al CLDH) used for adsorption of humic acid (HA) from aqueous solution. The morphology and structure of M Zn/Al CLDH were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), specific surface area (SSA), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The results showed that the implant of a certain amount of magnetic substrates on Zn/Al LDH didn't damage the layered structure of Zn/Al LDH. After calcination, M Zn/Al CLDH exhibited the characteristics of zinc aluminum oxides, whose specific surface area increased to 80.00m 2 /g from 49.15 m 2 /g of M Zn/Al LDH. The magnetism of M Zn/Al LDH originating from Fe 3 O 4 and γ-Fe 2 O 3 kept well under calcination at 370 °C. The influence of solution pH and competitive ions on the HA removal was investigated. M Zn/Al CLDH exhibited high HA removal efficiency which was over 97% from pH 4 to pH 8 for 30 min at M Zn/Al CLDH dosage of 0.2 g/L and HA initial concentration of 20 mg/L. The kinetic, adsorption isotherm and thermodynamic of the adsorption of HA by M Zn/Al CLDH were studied. The results indicated that the adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic analysis suggested that the adsorption of humic acid on M Zn/Al CLDH was a spontaneous and endothermic process . The adsorption mechanism is associated with electrostatic interaction and the intercalation of some functional groups of HA during layered structure of M Zn/Al LDH recovery in water due to the memory effect . This study revealed that M Zn/Al CLDH was an effective adsorbent for HA removal in water treatment .

Optimization of thermoelectric properties of Al-doped Zn1−xAlxO under high pressure and high temperature

Qi Chen,Xinjian Li,Yao Wang,Jian Wang,Lijie Chang,Yuewen Zhang,Hongan Ma,Xiaopeng Jia

ZnO has excellent electrical properties such as high conductivity ( σ ) and Seebeck coefficient (S) that are important for its thermoelectric properties and have provided the basis for obtaining improved ZnO-based thermoelectric materials by doping. In particular, the most representative Al-doped ZnO (AZO) has excellent thermoelectric performance. Although the Al doping is beneficial for reducing the lattice thermal conductivity of ZnO, the solubility of Al 2 O 3 in ZnO is limited and excessive doping of Al gives rise to the generation of a large amount of the ZnAl 2 O 4 secondary phase that limits the further improvement of the electrical properties. Thus, it is crucial to develop approaches to reduce thermal conductivity while still maintaining high electrical properties. In this work, high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) synthesis was used to adjust the ZnO optical band gap by modifying the lattice parameters of ZnO, and thereby improving the electrical properties of the sample. It was found that the optimal doping content for the samples synthesized at high pressure is different from that of the samples synthesized at normal pressure, providing a new approach for the further improvement of the thermoelectric properties of ZnO. Additionally, high pressure can promote grain refinement that is conducive to the generation of the multi-scale hierarchical structure of the sample that introduces a variety of phonon scattering mechanisms to reduce the thermal conductivity while maintaining a high power factor. The Zn 0.96 Al 0.04 O material obtained by sintering at a pressure of 3 GPa and a temperature of 1053 K for 30 min reached the highest power factor (7.8 µW cm −1 K −2 ) and the highest zT (0.16) at 973 K.
