pH/magnetic dual responsive Pickering emulsion stabilized by Fe3O4@SiO2@chitosan nanoparticles

Runna He,Shuangqing Sun,Jianpeng Cui,Mingshuo Chi,Zhikun Wang,Songqing Hu

In recent years, Pickering emulsifiers have been widely used in various production fields due to their excellent structural stability, biocompatibility and environmental friendliness. For some applications, it is required that the emulsifier can quickly respond to environmental stimuli and control the transition between stable and unstable emulsions. In this paper, we report a novel composite Pickering emulsifier with Fe3O4 as the core and magnetic response recognition body, silica as the intermediate protective layer, and chitosan (CS) of different molecular weights to endow solid particles with surface activity and pH-responsive properties. This emulsifier can stabilize the emulsion in the emulsion system with deionized water as the aqueous phase and liquid paraffin as the oil phase and can control the demulsification of the formed emulsion under the dual pH/magnetic stimulation. The experimental results show that Fe3O4@SiO2@CS has good paramagnetism and pH responsiveness. The particle size of the composite emulsifier nanoparticles is between 90 nm and 120 nm, and the best stabilizing effect of the emulsion is achieved when the dosage is 0.5 wt%. In the pH range of 3–11, the emulsifier can rapidly demulsify a stable paraffin oil–water emulsion system under the action of a magnetic field of strength 0.4 T. The pH response of the emulsifier is as follows: when pH ≤ 2, the system can form a stable emulsion, which is composed of fully protonated chitosan as a free chain segment and Fe3O4@SiO2. Emulsion stabilization was achieved with monolithic Fe3O4@SiO2@CS as an emulsifier at pH > 2, and demulsification was achieved at pH ≈ pKb (CS) at 298 K. The research in this paper can provide a feasible idea and synthesis method for the preparation of organic–inorganic composite structure emulsifier.

Antibacterial chitosan-based composite sponge with synergistic hemostatic effect for massive haemorrhage

Zhitao Ren,Mengya Li,Fang Wang,Jialu Qiao,Mǎdǎlina Georgiana Albu Kaya,Keyong Tang

Uncontrollable acute bleeding and wound infection pose significant challenges in emergency treatment and surgical operations. Therefore, the research and development of highly efficient antibacterial hemostatic agents are of great importance in reducing the mortality rate among patients with massive hemorrhage. In this study, we utilized hydrophobically modified chitosan (HM-CS) and gallic acid chitosan (GA-CS) to create a composite sponge (HM/GA-CS) that exhibits complementary advantages. The composite sponge combines the alkyl chain and polyphenol structure, allowing it to adsorb blood cells and plasma proteins simultaneously. This synergistic effect was confirmed through various tests, including blood cell adhesion, plasma protein barrier behavior, and in vitro hemostatic testing. Furthermore, experiments conducted on a rat liver injury model demonstrated that the composite sponge achieved rapid coagulation within 52 s, resulting in significantly lower bleeding volume compared with traditional gauze. In addition, the incorporation of GA-CS into HM-CS enhanced the antibacterial properties of the composite sponge. The antibacterial rate of the composite sponge against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) reached 100 % and 98.2 %, respectively. To evaluate its biocompatibility, the composite sponge underwent blood compatibility and cell activity tests, confirming its suitability. The HM/GA-CS sponge holds promising applications in managing cases of massive hemorrhage.

Thermally responsive copper alginate/nano ZnO/quaternary ammonium chitosan triple antimicrobial fiber

Baiqing Song,Tianyi Zhang,Xinfeng Li,Kaili Yang,Jinyu Shan,Yunzhi Dang,Jianhua Ma

Smart and controllable antibacterial fabrics have enormous potential in the textile, medical, and healthcare fields. In this study, nano zinc oxide (ZnO) was synthesized in situ in sodium alginate (Alg) solution, and the above-mentioned solution was combined with quaternary ammonium chitosan (QAC) to form a polyelectrolyte spinning solution. A composite antimicrobial fiber with thermally responsive properties was created by wet spinning through CuCl 2 coagulation bath crosslinking and in-situ synthesis of CuS on the fiber surface. Benefitting from the mixed-solubility synergistic effect of Alg and QAC, the mechanical properties of composite fiber materials were greatly improved. The tensile strength of the fiber was 58 ± 1.5 MPa, while the fiber material maintained good biocompatibility, moisture absorption, air permeability, and antibacterial properties. Adding a CuS layer gave the composite fibers photothermal response-ability and further promoted the controllable antibacterial properties of the materials. The maximum rings of inhibition of the copper alginate/nano ZnO/quaternary ammonium chitosan/ copper sulphide (CAlg/ZnO/QAC/CuS) composite fiber against S. aureus, E. coli and P. aeruginosa were 2.9 mm, 2.5 mm and 2.2 mm respectively. This was attributed to the synergistic effect of the inorganic and organic antimicrobial agents of nano ZnO and QAC component as well as the thermal stimulation response of CuS. These characteristics of the smart responsive composite fibers indicate their potential applications in medical dressings, special textiles, and healthcare materials.

Carboxymethyl chitosan and octadecylamine-coated liposome-containing WPTS: design, optimization, and evaluation

Nan Wang,Chi Zhang,Jiahui Wu,Dachuan Zhang,Junling Li,A. Galvbu,Leimengyuan Tang,Yan Li,Houxier Li,Shuting Tan,Xueyong Wang

Liposomes (LPs) are a delivery system for stabilizing pharmaceuticals with limited use due to their propensity to congregate and fuse. A proposed method of addressing these problems is polymer coating. In this study, the potential of octadecylamine (ODA)-coated liposomes and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS/ODA-LPs) for enhancing Wacao pentacyclic triterpene saponin (WPTS) transport capacity was investigated. CMCS/ODA-LPs were produced by electrostatic adsorption and thin-film hydration. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to enhance the process and encapsulation efficiency (EE) for optimum drug encapsulation efficiency. The synthesized WPTS-CMCS/ODA-LPs were uniformly dispersed in a circular shape, and during 14 days of storage at 4 °C, the particle size and morphology did not significantly change. Vesicle size, zeta potential, polydispersity index (PDI), and entrapment efficiency (%) were 179.1 ± 7.31 nm, −29.6 ± 1.35 mV, 0.188 ± 0.052, and 75.62 ± 0.43, respectively. The hemolysis test revealed that WPTS-CMCS/ODA-LPs were sufficiently biocompatible. Compared to WPTS-LPs, WPTS-CMCS/ODA-LPs consistently showed a much more significant cytotoxic effect on cancer cells. Early and WPTS-CMCS/ODA-LPs-induced apoptosis resulted in almost seven times more cell death than the control. Compared to physiological pH 7.3, the pH-sensitive CMCS coupled LPs increased drug release at acidic pH 6.5. These findings suggest the efficacy of pH-sensitive CMCS/ODA-LPs as a medication delivery method for WPTS.

Biocompatible graphene/chitosan hybrid aerogel reinforced polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite with excellent dielectric properties

Shangru Cheng,Yaokai Tang,Qiangmin Gao,Xincheng Wang,Anqi Li,Yingxin Yuan,Shanshan Guan

A longstanding challenge in fabricating high-dielectric polymer composite is how to rationalize structure design to improve dielectric constant while minimizing dielectric loss. In this work, we provide a critical material design concept for high-performance flexible dielectric nanocomposite (PCGA) based on backfilling polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix into the pre-constructed chitosan-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel with 3D conductive network. Herein, the 3D conductive network enables PCGA to achieve the percolation threshold with a small amount of rGO, which improving the dielectric constant. Simultaneously, the chitosan insulating barrier layer prevents the generation of leakage current between conductive fillers interfaces, which suppressing the losses of the PCGA, thus ensuring the balance between dielectric constant and loss. The results demonstrated that the PCGA (0.06 g rGO) exhibited a dielectric constant as high as 297.3 and a loss tangent as low as 1.91. Subsequently, the as-obtained PCGA composites as a dielectric interlayer was employed for preparing capacitive sensor. The results demonstrated that the sensor possesses a desirable integration of high sensitivity (5.8% kPa −1 in the pressure range 0–7 kPa) and wide work range (0–140 kPa) due to the synergistic effect of the excellent mechanical performance along with high-dielectric constant and suppressed loss.

Injectable carboxymethyl chitosan-genipin hydrogels encapsulating tea tree oil for wound healing

Kepeng Hu,Erna Jia,Qimeng Zhang,Wei Zheng,Rongjiao Sun,Mengao Qian,Ying Tan,Wanle Hu

Injectable hydrogel is of interesting for wound healing due to it can be used as carriers of bioactive molecules for the reparation of tissues with minimal invasiveness. However, the integration of lipid-soluble substances into hydrogel network is difficult because of the polarity differences. Here, the tea tree oil (TTO) is encapsulated into the hydrogel network via a previous emulsification process, and a tough and antibacterial injectable hydrogel is synthesized by the Schiff base reaction between carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and genipin (GP). CMCS is served as both an emulsifier and a gel-forming material to construct the heterogeneous hydrogel. The obtained hydrogels present high adhesive strength (∼162.75 kPa), great antibacterial properties (over 90 %) and excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, an anal fistula-like wound healing experiment concluded that the heterogeneous hydrogel has good slow-release properties of TTO for an accelerate healing process, this hydrogel shows great potential for the treatment of complex anal fistula wounds.

Self-Assembled Corrole/Chitosan Photothermal Nanoparticles for Accelerating Infected Diabetic Wound Healing

Yunhao Yu,Rui Tian,Yu Zhao,Xudong Qin,Liefeng Hu,Jun-Jie Zou,Ying-Wei Yang,Jian Tian

Microvascular dysfunction caused by hyperglycemia leads to slow healing of diabetic wounds and significantly increases the risk of bacterial infection. The misuse of antibiotics can also lead to bacterial resistance, making the management of diabetic wounds more challenging. Thus, developing new antibacterial agents or strategies to overcome antibiotic resistance is highly pursued. Herein, novel supramolecular photothermal nanoparticles (MCC/CS NPs), assembled from mono-carboxyl corrole (MCC) and chitosan via hydrogen bonding and π – π stacking, are developed and used for treating bacterial wound infection. The MCC molecules possess good photothermal performance and the chitosan with inherent bioactivity can exert moderate antibacterial effects. The aggregation of MCC in MCC/CS NPs induced by chitosan-templated self-assembly further quenches molecular fluorescence and realizes an extraordinary photothermal conversion efficiency of 66.4%. Moreover, the highly positively charged MCC/CS NPs can selectively target bacteria via electrostatic interactions. Under near-infrared laser irradiation, the MCC/CS NPs achieve potent photothermal and inherent antimicrobial synergistic effects against Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vitro. Furthermore, the bacteria-infected diabetic wound model confirms that the MCC/CS NPs can effectively kill drug-resistant bacteria, accelerate wound healing and angiogenesis, and show good biocompatibility, representing a novel and efficient photothermal antibacterial nanoplatform.

Yang Ji,Mengdie Hou,Jin Zhang,Meiqi Jin,Tianlin Wang,Huazhe Yang,Xiaodong Zhang

In the field of bone repair, the inorganic–organic composite scaffold is a promising strategy for mimicking the compositions of the natural bone. In addition, as implants for repairing load-bearing sites, an inert permanent bone substitute composites with bioactive degradable ingredients may make full use of the composite scaffold. Herein, the porous zirconia (ZrO2) matrix was prepared via the template replication method, and the partial degradable ZrO2–chitosan particles–GelMA composite scaffolds with different chitosan/GelMA volume ratios were prepared through the vacuum infiltration method. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) were adopted to observe the size of the chitosan particles and the morphologies of the composites scaffold. The mechanical properties, swelling properties, and degradation properties of the composite scaffolds were also characterized by the mechanical properties testing machine and immersion tests. The CCK-8 assay was adopted to test the biocompatibility of the composite scaffold preliminarily. The results show that chitosan particles as small as 60 nm were obtained. In addition, the ratio of chitosan/GelMA can influence the mechanical properties and the swelling and degradation behaviors of the composites scaffold. Furthermore, improved cell proliferation performance was obtained for the composite scaffolds. Keywords:porous zirconia matrix;chitosan particles;GelMA;composite scaffold

On As(III) Adsorption Characteristics of Innovative Magnetite Graphene Oxide Chitosan Microsphere

Huimei Shan,Yunquan Liu,Chunya Zeng,Sanxi Peng,Hongbin Zhan

A magnetite graphene oxide chitosan (MGOCS) composite microsphere was specifically prepared to efficiently adsorb As(III) from aqueous solutions. The characterization analysis of BET, XRD, VSM, TG, FTIR, XPS, and SEM-EDS was used to identify the characteristics and adsorption mechanism. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the effects of the operational parameters and to evaluate the adsorption kinetic and equilibrium isotherm. The results show that the MGOCS composite microsphere with a particle size of about 1.5 mm can be prepared by a straightforward method of dropping FeCl2, graphene oxide (GO), and chitosan (CS) mixtures into NaOH solutions and then drying the mixed solutions at 45 °C. The produced MGOCS had a strong thermal stability with a mass loss of <30% below 620 °C. The specific surface area and saturation magnetization of the produced MGOCS was 66.85 m2/g and 24.35 emu/g, respectively. The As(III) adsorption capacity (Qe) and removal efficiency (Re) was only 0.25 mg/g and 5.81% for GOCS, respectively. After 0.08 mol of Fe3O4modification, more than 53% of As(III) was efficiently removed by the formed MGOCS from aqueous solutions over a wide pH range of 5–10, and this was almost unaffected by temperature. The coexisting ion of PO43−decreasedQefrom 3.81 mg/g to 1.32 mg/g, but Mn2+increasedQefrom 3.50 mg/g to 4.19 mg/g. The As(III) adsorption fitted the best to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the maximumQewas 20.72 mg/g as fitted by the Sips model. After four times regeneration, theRevalue of As(III) slightly decreased from 76.2% to 73.8%, and no secondary pollution of Fe happened. Chemisorption is the major mechanism for As(III) adsorption, and As(III) was adsorbed on the surface and interior of the MGOCS, while the adsorbed As(III) was partially oxidized to As(V) accompanied by the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). The produced As(V) was further adsorbed through ligand exchange (by forming Fe–O–As complexes) and electrostatic attraction, enhancing the As(III) removal. As an easily prepared and environmental-friendly composite, MGOCS not only greatly adsorbs As(III) but also effectively removes Cr(VI) and As(V) (Re> 60%) and other metals, showing a great advantage in the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated water. Keywords:chitosan;graphene oxide;magnetite; As(III) removal

Biomimetic chitosan-derived bifunctional lubricant with superior antibacterial and hydration lubrication performances

Lumin Yang,Xiaoduo Zhao,Xiaozhu Liao,Rui Wang,Zengjie Fan,Shuanhong Ma,Feng Zhou

The lubrication deficiency in joints is a major cause of osteoarthritis. One of the most commonly used treatment means is to inject artificial lubricants, but there is a potential risk of infection during the injection process. Therefore, developing artificial lubricants with dual functions of friction-reduction and antibacterial is urgent. In this work, a novel polysaccharide-derived lubricant with simultaneous anti-bacteria and water-lubrication properties, called CS-MPC-N, is developed by grafting 2‑methacryloyloxylethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and nisin peptide onto backbone of chitosan (CS). Compared to the control CS, CS-MPC-N exhibits good lubrication and friction-reduction properties because of its excellent water solubility. Especially, CS-MPC-N shows low friction coefficient (0.03 ∼ 0.05) at the sliding interfaces of artificial joints materials or even natural articular cartilages. Moreover, CS-MPC-N can effectively inhibit the proliferation of Staphylococcus aureu, exhibiting excellent antibacterial effect. This kind of novel polysaccharide-derived lubricant is expected to be used in treating infectious arthritis.

Reproducing ancient Chinese ink depending on gelatin/chitosan and modern experimental methodology

Liu Zhen,Liu Kun

Chinese ink has very special significance for presentation of artistic effects and preservation of works of art; however, wasted nonrenewable resources, potential toxicity, and complex and inefficient production technologies have limited the development of inks for traditional Chinese culture. Herein, environmentally friendly, practical and antibacterial Chinese ink was prepared by facile heating-stirring of gelatin and the natural polysaccharide chitosan. The internal composition, viscosity, morphology, particle size and antibacterial properties of the ink were characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and bacteriostatic zone tests. The results showed that commercial ink (CM) spread easily on Xuan paper and led to imperfect artwork, while the chitosan and gelatin ink (CG) showed good adhesion and stability on Xuan paper. Based on this study, we believe that the good performance of CG ink should be attributed to restrictions arising from its internal chitosan and gelatin network, which restrict diffusion. Finally, the author used CG ink to display traditional Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting and believes that it has significant application prospects and will be used in large-scale production.

Chitosan-based composites reinforced with antibacterial flexible wood membrane for rapid hemostasis

Qingwu Wang,Tianyu Luo,Xiaodong Xu,Qiaoyi Han,Xin Xu,Xingxia Zhang,Xia Liu,Qiang Shi

Irregular hemorrhagic traumas always threaten the health of patients due to uncontrollable bleeding and wound infections. The traditional hemostatic materials show dissatisfactory hemostatic efficiency and antibacterial activity in solving these potential bleeding dangers. Herein, we proposed a kind of composites based on flexible wood membrane (FWM) loaded with chitosan/alginate derivative for accelerating rapid hemostasis and preventing infection. FWM was removed part of hemicellulose and lignin by using NaOH/Na 2 SO 3 mixture to obtain excellent flexibility while retaining the original porous structure, followed by loading silver nanoparticles on the FWM surface to prepare AgNPs-FWM as an antibacterial bio-carrier. Then, AgNPs-FWM was coated with polyoxyethylene stearate-modified chitosan and multi-aldehyde sodium alginate to fabricate the composites of chitosan/alginate/AgNPs-FWM (CSA/AgNPs-FWM) using in-situ Schiff base reaction. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the CSA/AgNPs-FWM composites exhibited lower BCI value (2.6 ± 1.3 %), more rapid hemostasis (26 s) and lower blood loss (67.8 mg) than that of the traditional materials. The possible mechanism for the hemostasis process was not only the high blood absorption capacity, but also the synergistic interaction between hydrophobic alkane chains, amino groups, aldehydes, hydroxyl groups and blood cells. Moreover, CSA/AgNPs-FWM showed exceptional superiorities in mechanical properties and antibacterial activity, which endowed composites high potential in hemostasis application for irregular external wound.
