The sorption-enhanced steam gasification of biomass (SESGB) using CaO-based materials is considered as a promising method for H 2 production. Ca-Al-Ce material has been reported as a good bi-functional material in SESGB process. Red mud is a solid waste in aluminium industry with large yield, which is rich in Fe 2 O 3 . In this work, a red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce bi-functional material was prepared by wet-mechanical mixing method for H 2 production from SESGB. The CO 2 capture, H 2 production, and tar reduction performances during SESGB process using the red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce bi-functional material were studied. The results show that the optimum addition amount of red mud in the bi-functional material is 5 wt%. After 20 SESGB cycles, the H 2 concentration using the red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce material achieves 65.1 vol%, which is 82.4% higher than that using Ca-Al-Ce material. Besides, with the addition of red mud in the bi-functional material, the tar, residue char yields and CO 2 concentration decrease by 25.2%, 8.6% and 52.2%, respectively. Fe 2 O 3 in the red mud reacts with CaO to form Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 in the 1st cycle, and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 is stable during 20 cycles, which is beneficial for the generation of oxygen vacancy. The oxidation states of Fe species in the material increase with the number of SESGB cycles, thus the catalytic effects on water gas shift reaction and tar reduction are promoted. The red mud addition is the key factor that results in high H 2 production, CO 2 capture and tar reduction performances, so the red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce material appears promising for SESGB.

Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr), with its special layered structure, is known to have potential as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst. However, the rapid recombination and short lifetime of the photogenerated carriers of BiOBr restrict its photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of organic pollutants. Given the similar ionic size of Ce and Bi, Ce atoms might be easily introduced into the crystal of BiOBr to tailor its band structure. In this study, Ce doped BiOBr (Ce-BiOBr) samples with different percentages of Ce contents were prepared via a hydrothermal method. The intrinsic photocatalytic efficiency of Ce0.2-BiOBr for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) was 3.66 times higher than that of pristine BiOBr under visible light irradiation. The mechanism of Ce-doping modification for the enhanced photocatalytic performance was demonstrated based on a series of experiments and DFT calculation. The narrowed bandgap, the enhanced charge separation efficiency and Ce-doping energy level contributed to the remarkable photocatalytic performance of Ce-BiOBr.Keywords:bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr);Ce-doping modification;doping energy level;visible light;bisphenol A (BPA)

Cerium, as a lanthanide, has attracted considerable interest because of its excellent catalytic activity. Here, we propose a novel cerium-based coordination polymer nanoparticles named DPA–Ce–GMP, which have excellent oxidase-mimicking properties. Furthermore, a colorimetric probe that can act as an inhibitor to suppress the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was developed for detecting organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). DPA–Ce–GMP catalyzes colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce a blue color, and AChE catalyzes acetylthiocholine to produce thiocholine (TCh), which can weaken DPA–Ce–GMP-catalyzed TMB. After the addition of OPs, the enzymatic activity of AChE was inhibited to produce less amount of TCh, resulting in more DPA–Ce–GMP-catalyst oxidized TMB to show an increasing blue color. Dichlorvos, as the samples, with the limit of 0.024 μg/L. Overall, we believe that the colorimetric probe can be used for the rapid, low-cost, and large-scale field detection of OPs in food samples.

The modification of polymers can significantly improve the ability to remove rare earth ions from wastewater, but so far few studies have focused on the irradiation-induced grafting method. In this study, a novel magnetic chelating resin for Ce(III) uptake was first synthesized by suspension polymerization of PMMA@Fe3O4microspheres followed by irradiation-induced grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and subsequent amination with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The FT-IR, SEM, TG and XRD characterization confirmed that we had successfully fabricated magnetic PMMA-PGMA-PEI microspheres with a well-defined structure and good thermal stability. The obtained adsorbent exhibited a satisfactory uptake capacity of 189.81 mg/g for Ce(III) at 318.15 K and an initial pH = 6.0. Additionally, the impact of the absorbed dose and GMA monomer concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial concentration were thoroughly examined. The pseudo-second order and Langmuir models were able to describe the kinetics and isotherms of the adsorption process well. In addition, the thermodynamic data indicated that the uptake process was spontaneous and endothermic. Altogether, this research enriched the Ce(III) trapping agent and provided a new method for the removal rare earth pollutants. Keywords:magnetic PMMA microspheres;PEI;radiation induced grafting;Ce(III) adsorption

A series Ce m Cu n O x /HZSM-5 sorbents were introduced to remove PH 3 in low-temperature and low-oxygen environments. The effects of copper loading and cerium doping on the adsorption–oxidation performance of the sorbents were investigated. Experimental results showed that doping with 1 wt% of cerium (Ce 1 Cu 30 O X /HZSM-5) could significantly improve the performance of the sorbent. The PH 3 breakthrough capacity was identified as 114.36 mg(PH 3 )•g sorbent -1 . In addition, after three thermal regeneration cycles, the sorbent still has ideal performance. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses exhibited that CuO was the main active species, and Ce-doping can increase the chemisorption oxygen on the surface of the sorbent. BET results demonstrated that the introduction of cerium could improve the specific surface area and pore volume of sorbent. Hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS) indicated that cerium species played an important role in uniformly dispersing copper species on the HZSM-5 surface and improving the oxidation performance of sorbent. Moreover, the reaction products and mechanisms were also investigated by XRD, XPS, and in-situ FTIR spectra. The results indicated that the consumption of CuO and the accumulation of phosphorus species (e.g., P, P 2 O 5 , and Cu 3 P) on the surface and inner pores of the sorbent were the primary reasons for the deactivation of the sorbent.

NiO and CeO 2 composite metal oxides (NiO–CeO 2 ) were synthesized by sol-gel method to investigate a degradation system by persulfate (PS) activation with the assistance of visible light (Vis). The phase composition of NiO–CeO 2 was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology of NiO–CeO 2 was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the element composition and valence state of the NiO–CeO 2 . In the Vis/PS/NiO–CeO 2 system, the degradation rate of Orange II using a concentration of 50 mg/L was as high as 90% in 15 min but it increased to as high as 99% in 60 min. Mechanism studies have shown that the combination of NiO and CeO 2 generated more oxygen vacancies , and activated persulfate to generate active oxygen species. Moreover, the effects of visible light , persulfate concentration and pH were evaluated, and the results showed that the participation of visible light and persulfate could significantly increase the degradation efficiency of Orange II, but pH had little effect on the degradation. Quenching experiments and detection by ESR showed that O 2 ‾, •SO 4 ‾, •OH, and 1 O 2 all contribute to the removal of Orange II. In addition, the recovery and reuse properties of NiO–CeO 2 may lead to sustainable treatment of wastewater.

Ce modified Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La have been prepared to investigate the effect of Ce loadings on pre-breakthrough H 2 S removal efficiency, breakthrough sulfur capacity (BSC) and BSC durability of the sorbents during desulfurization-regeneration cycles. The results showed Ce modification could improve the pre-breakthrough H 2 S removal efficiency of regenerated sorbents during desulfurization-regeneration cycles. The XPS characterization showed that the Ce can promote the binding energy of Mn ion to shift to lower energy, which enhanced H 2 S adsorption on the regenerated sorbent. However, the Ce loading sequence had effect on BSC durability of sorbent during desulfurization-regeneration cycles. The Ce-Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La with co-impregnation of Mn and Ce oxides had higher BSC than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La, while the Ce/Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La with Ce loading on the surface of Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La had lower BSC and worse BSC durability than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La. The characterization results showed Ce-Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La obtained better surface area and pore structure than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La, and Ce ion can promote the increasing of the around electron density of Mn ion, which was beneficial for H 2 S adsorption of Ce-Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La. The poor surface area and pore structure would cause the low BSC of Ce/Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La, and less stability of pore structure might lead to poorer BSC durability of Ce/Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La than Mn x O y /Al 2 O 3 -La during desulfurization-regeneration cycles.

In this work, H 2 production performances from Enteromorpha prolifera and its char by absorption-enhanced steam gasification using Ce-doped CaO material were investigated. The Ce-doped CaO material improves the H 2 production from Enteromorpha prolifera by steam gasification, which achieves 79.0 vol% H 2 in the syngas. The Ce-doped CaO material with the mass ratio of CeO 2 /CaO = 10:90 seems more appropriate for high H 2 production, tar and char conversion. The presence of CeO 2 leads to good cyclic stability in H 2 production from Enteromorpha prolifera char during the gasification/calcination cycles. After 20 cycles, H 2 concentration and yield from Enteromorpha prolifera char achieve 77.8 vol% and 141.8 mL/g using Ce-doped CaO material, respectively. The CeO 2 facilitates the conductivity of electrons in CaO surface due to the existence of Ce 3+ species, thus CO 2 capture, water gas shift, and steam methane reforming reactions are promoted by CeO 2 . The Ce-doped CaO material maintains the porous microstructure and fine particles during the cycles due to the support of CeO 2 . Therefore, H 2 productions from Enteromorpha prolifera and its char by absorption-enhanced steam gasification using Ce-doped CaO material appear promising.

Herein, we synthesized and characterized glutathione-capped copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) using a convenient one-pot chemical reduction approach based on glutathione as capping and reducing agents. The Ce(III) induced aggregation-induced emission of CuNCs to form a CuNCs-Ce 3+ fluoroprobe due to electrostatic and coordination interactions between Ce 3+ and CuNCs. In contrast to CuNCs, the fluorescent intensities (FLs) of CuNCs-Ce 3+ were enhanced by ~ 40-fold concomitant with 20-nm blue-shift of the maximum emission, and a 3.45-fold lengthening of the average fluorescent lifetime. The FLs of CuNCs-Ce 3+ were selectively quenched at 650 nm by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) via the redox reaction. Based on this phenomenon, the sensitive assay of H 2 O 2 was realized, and the linear range spanned over the range of 14–140 μM. Notably, the visualization of the fluorescence quenched effect of H 2 O 2 could be easily attained. Additionally, glucose could be specifically oxidized by glucose oxidase to produce H 2 O 2 , and thus the detection of glucose was achieved according to changes in the concentrations of H 2 O 2 . Under optimized conditions, the fluorescent assay of glucose based on the CuNCs-Ce 3+ system offered the linear range of 8–48 μM with detection limit of 2.4 μM. Meanwhile, high selectivity of the as-constructed fluorescent assay allows the sensitive detection of H 2 O 2 and glucose in real-world care products and human serum samples, showing a great application potential in their conventional monitoring.

We report the fabrication of Ce–Fe oxides (CFOs) derived from Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with different shapes of sphere (CFO-S), bipyramid (CFO-B), and flower (CFO-F), which are prepared by controlling the volume ratio of water and ethanol and the addition of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to control the solvent environment using a modified coprecipitation method. The structure, morphology, and the surface properties of Ce–Fe oxides were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic performance of PBA-derived Ce–Fe oxides was evaluated for the oxidation of cyclohexane, which positively correlated with surface oxygen vacancy and the amount ratio of Ce/Fe. The conversion for cyclohexane of CFO-S and CFO-B was 9.03 and 9.25%, respectively. However, CFO-S had a higher selectivity for K/A-oil (cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) of 81.8%, resulting from the exposed crystal plane (100) compared to CFO-B (75%). Besides, CFO-F was rich in the Fe2O3 crystal phase, which is beneficial for KA selectivity. It was found that Ce3+, Fe3+, and OV had an important influence on the activation of C–H bonds, which provides a reference for the design of efficient alkane oxidation catalysts.

The eutrophication of water bodies caused by excessive phosphate discharge has always been a hotspot issue that needs to be addressed urgently. However, the fabrication of a practical capturer with high phosphate affinity remains a challenging task. In this work, a novel type of composite adsorbent (D301-Ce+) was synthesized, aiming for efficient and selective phosphate capture from wastewater. Characterizations including FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, and SEM confirmed the successful synthesis of the composites with multiple functionalities. It was shown that the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of D301-Ce+ was 246.74 mg P g−1 because of the porous matrix of the weak basic anion exchange resin of D301 jointly modified with cerium and cationic polymeric layers. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics experiments confirmed that the intra-particle diffusion dominated phosphate adsorption, and the process was spontaneously endothermic naturally. Recycling studies indicated that this newly fabricated sorbent behaved with excellent reusability. Most importantly, in the presence of coexisting anions (Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, and HCO3−), D301-Ce+ exhibited a strong selectivity for phosphate, which could be attributed to the high affinity of the cerium component toward phosphate. For practical purposes, fixed-bed column experiments demonstrated that the Thomas model fitted the parameters better. By virtue of component optimization and sorption testing, the capturing mechanism could be fully described as electrostatic attraction and inner-sphere complexation.

Nowadays, researchers make great effects to eliminate some harmful chemicals produced by tobacco. Photocatalysis is one of the most advanced techniques and can degrade organic contaminants effectively. In this paper, a novel CoS@ZnIn 2 S 4 -Ce heterostructured cage was successfully prepared for degradation. After various characterizations, CoS@ZnIn 2 S 4 -Ce exhibited a significant separation of the photo-generated electrons and holes and could degrade phenol effectively no matter under UV light (98.46 %) or visible light (96.72 %). Furthermore, CoS@ZnIn 2 S 4 -Ce could degrade nicotine (91.62 %), benzopyrene (84.65 %) and nitrosamine (99.18 %) effectively under visible light. The effects of the initial conditions on degradation of phenol was also well investigated. The optimal conditions were 0.5 g/L of catalyst dosage, 4.35–7.00 of pH value and 10 mg/L of phenol initial concentration. OH and O 2 − were the main active radicals during the photo-degradation process. On this basis, a possible photocatalytic degradation pathway for degradation of contaminants produced by tobacco are proposed.
