Developing the Na2CaZr2Ge3O12:Cr3+ Garnet Phosphor for Advanced NIR pc-LEDs in Night Vision and Bioimaging

Zurong Liao,Małgorzata Sójka,Jiyou Zhong,Jakoah Brgoch

Materials emitting near-infrared (NIR) light play a crucial role in the development of phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) for applications ranging from fundamental science like spectroscopic analysis to highly applied uses like night vision and biological imaging. One class of materials that has garnered significant interest for these technical spaces is Cr3+-activated garnets due to their high efficiency and ability to operate at relatively high temperatures. However, their limited emission beyond 800 nm impedes their use as optimal blue LED-pumped NIR-emitting materials. In this study, we present a new garnet-type NIR phosphor, Na2CaZr2Ge3O12:Cr3+, that addresses this challenge─the material exhibits a long-wavelength emission (λem,max = 832 nm) and good thermal quenching resistance while maintaining an excellent internal quantum efficiency (IQE = 98%). These properties are attributed to a crystal environment reconstruction, where a crystal structure distortion is coupled to a weak crystal field, which is uncommon for most rigid garnet-type phosphors. Furthermore, the fabricated NIR pc-LED devices using this material demonstrate superior performance compared with devices employing well-known efficient NIR phosphors operating in this emission range. The light source is subsequently demonstrated in applications spanning night vision, bioimaging, and nondestructive analysis. This study not only provides insights into the luminescence properties of Cr3+-activated garnet materials with desirable performance but also highlights the practical application of NIR-emitting garnet phosphors.

Gold nanoparticles decorated graphene oxide/nanocellulose paper for NIR laser-induced photothermal ablation of pathogenic bacteria

Jiwen Luo,Weijie Deng,Feng Yang,Zeqi Wu,Mantuo Huang,Mengyuan Gu

A functionalized paper based on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) conjugated graphene oxide (GO) was developed for near-infrared (NIR) laser triggered photothermal ablation against infectious bacterial pathogens. Firstly, quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC) not only acted as reducing agent to synthesize Au NPs, but also functioned as coupling agent to link up Au NPs with GO. Au-QCMC-GO(+) was supposed to synergistically intensify the photothermal effect, which was then mixed with nanocellulose to form a functionalized paper via vacuum filtration. The photothermal efficiency, antibacterial treatment and mechanical property of Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper were investigated. Excited by NIR laser irradiation, Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper generated a temperature rise over 80 °C, sufficient for photothermal ablation upon both Gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis and Stapylococcus aureus ) and Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ). Additionally, Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper showed a remarkable enhancement in tensile strength, bursting index and tear index compared to those of pure nanocellulose paper.

TME/NIR Dual-Responsive Zinc-Based Targeted Nanoagonist for Multimodal Amplification of STING-Mediated Cancer Immunotherapy

Kepeng Hu,Jiawei Wang,Wei Zhang,Zhixuan Wu,Jing Chen,Yujing He,Xiyue Duan,Yaoting He,Xin Xin,Haoyi Xiang,Yijing Wang,Chengwei Wu,Yang Yi,Qing Meng,Yuqian Qiao,Kui Cheng,Xiaojun Long,Zhangfa Song

The precise activation of the cGAS-STING pathway for effective tumor immunotherapy remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of immune responses and tumor microenvironment (TME) limitations. Here, a multifunctional nanoagonist, cRGD-PDA/ZIF8@ICG/TPT (cDZ@IP), was developed to realize nano-metabolite–driven multimodal synergistic activation of the STING pathway and enhanced immune recognition. The agonist combines cRGD peptide-targeted polydopamine-coated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 with the photosensitizer indocyanine green and the chemotherapeutic drug topotecan. Upon near-infrared laser irradiation, cDZ@IP degrades within the TME, generating high levels of reactive oxygen species, inducing mitochondrial stress, and releasing endogenous mitochondrial DNA. Additionally, topotecan enhances DNA damage accumulation by inhibiting nuclear DNA repair. Zn 2 + released from the agonist further amplifies cGAS-STING pathway activation, thereby ensuring a robust immune response. The mild photothermal therapy-induced immunogenic cell death promotes the initiation of antitumor immunity, while also enhancing the effectiveness of immune checkpoint blockade. In vivo studies show that cDZ@IP significantly inhibits primary and distant tumor growth and prevents lung metastasis, providing a promising strategy for STING pathway-targeted cancer immunotherapy.

NIR-II fluorescence imaging of bone using synergistic targeting nanoprobes for precise diagnosis of skeletal disorders

Ajing Wu,Wenxuan Wang,Rui Liu,Huifang Hao,Xiaochun Zheng,Mingxin Zhao,Haonan Chen,Yanchun Ma,Weiwei Kang,Ziliang Zheng

A synergistic nanoprobe enables precise, safe, non-radiative skeletal imaging. • Multi-targeting enables precise enrichment throughout the skeleton. • AA@TFN provides a versatile platform for bone disease diagnosis and monitoring. Early diagnosis of bone-related diseases remains a critical clinical challenge, attributable to persistent limitations in imaging accuracy and safety. While near-infrared Region II fluorescence (NIR-II FL) imaging confers substantial advantages for deep-tissue visualization, its clinical translation is hampered by the inadequate targeting specificity of conventional contrast agents. Here, we developed Au-Ag@Apo-Tf/-N 3 (AA@TFN), a synergistic targeting gold–silver nanocluster probe engineered with glutathione and azide functionalities, which achieved bone-specific enrichment via a hierarchical multi-targeting mechanism. AA@TFN first anchored to hydroxyapatite in the bone matrix through glutathione carboxyl-mediated chelation, then targeted transferrin receptors highly expressed in bone marrow, and finally endured macrophage-mediated uptake facilitated by azide-enhanced bone affinity. A synergistic targeting strategy enabled real-time, high-resolution NIR-II FL imaging across the complete skeleton, with enhanced probe enrichment at lesion sites driven by microenvironmental changes. AA@TFN enabled visualization of synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis models and millimeter‑scale microlesions in multiple myeloma models. Furthermore, the probe exhibited excellent biocompatibility and favorable safety profiles, underscoring its strong translational potential. A versatile platform was established for the diagnosis of bone diseases and non-invasive monitoring of therapeutic efficacy. Wen He,Duoduo Ling,Yanghao Bi,Dongbo Wang,Lei Chen,Yinze Zhang,Qiudan Geng,Ali Raza,Yiming Zhao,Sihan Zhang,Xiaoxue Yu,Bangsheng Li,Lianshe Fu,Jinzhong Wang

Electron beam evaporation and post-annealing enable low-cost, high-quality Bi 2 Te 3 /GaN heterojunction fabrication. • The Bi 2 Te 3 /GaN photodetector achieves a specific detectivity of 2.01 × 10 12 Jones at 0 V. • Built-in field of heterojunction separates photogenerated carriers for self-powered UV-NIR detection. • This device is used as a single-pixel sensor and achieves high-quality multi-wavelength imaging. Self-powered broadband photodetectors are critical for energy-efficient optoelectronics in the Internet of Things, environmental sensing, and wearable imaging, yet achieving broadband response with high specific detectivity in a device through a scalable fabrication method remains a major challenge. In this work, we report a Bi 2 Te 3 /GaN heterojunctionphotodetector that integrates narrow- and wide-bandgap semiconductors to realize self-powered operation from ultraviolet to near infrared region. The Bi 2 Te 3 /GaN heterostructure is fabricated by depositing a homogeneous Bi 2 Te 3 film with high crystallinity on a GaN substrate through the electron beam evaporation method followed by a post-annealing. Without any external bias, the photodetector exhibits a broadband specific detectivity above 10 9 Jones and a fast response lower than 100 m s in the 367-850 nm spectral range, attributed to efficient photogenerated carrier separation across the heterojunctiondue to the built-in electric field at the interface. Under 367 nm light irradiation, the device achieves a responsivity of 80.39 mA/W and a specific detectivity of 2.01 × 10 12 Jones. The device also demonstrates excellent cycling durability, maintaining stable photoresponse over 100 cycles at 638 nm illumination, and supports high-resolution and multi-wavelength imaging. This work provides a cost-effective, scalable strategy for constructing Bi 2 Te 3 /GaN heterojunctions and highlights the potential of Bi 2 Te 3 -based detectors for next-generation self-powered broadband photodetection technologies. An ICT + ESIPT synergistic NIR ratiometric probe for mitochondrial MAOs imaging in vivo and in vitro

Cao Ting,Li Mengjin,Ma Hong,Fan Zhefeng

The liver is a vital metabolic and detoxification organ in the body, yet the diagnosis of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) remains challenging due to the limitations of traditional detection methods. Monoamine oxidases (MAOs), which are highly expressed on the mitochondrial membrane of hepatic tissues, are closely associated with DILI. In this study, a near-infrared ratiometric fluorescent probe Mito-1 was developed based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms. This probe could precisely target mitochondria, exhibiting high sensitivity (DL = 0.14 μg/mL), a wide linear detection range (10–150 μg/mL), excellent selectivity towards MAOs, and good biocompatibility. Cellular experiments confirmed its ability to distinguish MAO activity between normal and liver cancer cells. In an acetaminophen (APAP)-induced DILI zebrafish model, Mito-1 enabled in vivo dynamic visualization of MAO activity in hepatic tissues. Collectively, this work provides a novel visual tool for the early diagnosis of DILI and the mechanistic study of MAOs. High Efficiency NIR Luminescence Beyond 900 nm Through Promoting Cr3+ Pair Generation in Sr3Zr2O7 Layered Perovskite

Zhiyuan Pan,Sihan Feng,Yun Wang,Xuejiao Wang,Qi Zhu,Ji-Guang Li

The near-infrared (NIR) light of 900–1100 nm exhibits enormous application potential in fields such as optical communication and biological detection. However, high-efficiency phosphors emitting beyond 900 nm remain extremely limited due to non-radiative deactivation. In this study, a 455 nm blue light excitable NIR phosphor that efficiently emits in the wide range of 700–1200 nm (peaking at ∼960 nm) was obtained through Cr 3+ /La 3+ codoping of Ruddlesden-Popper type Sr 3 Zr 2 O 7 perovskite, whose internal/external quantum efficiencies (%) and thermal stability of luminescence ( I 423 / I 298 , %) reached ∼92.4/57.5 and 73, respectively. Experimental and theoretical analysis found the decisive role of the La 3+ codopant in Cr 3+ luminescence: it not only inhibited Cr 3+ from oxidation but also attracted the Cr 3+ ions to aggregate around it to form Cr 3+ –Cr 3+ pairs for the aforesaid excellent luminescence. Combining the NIR phosphor with a Si-PIN photodetector created a highly effective blue-to-NIR conversion unit, demonstrating the application potential of the phosphor for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC).

Multimodal imaging-guided NIR-II photo-gas nanoplatform amplifies PD-1 blockade for synergistic TNBC therapy

Linlin Song,Meixu Chen,Huiling Wang,Xin Wang,Tianyue Xu,Heqing Zhang,Shuwen Ran,Liwen Huang,Yingying Ma,Zhihui Liu,Zihan Xu,Yujie Zhao,Zichang Liu,Yong Luo,Xiujun Yu,Yulan Peng,Hubing Shi,Jing Jing,Xiujing He

Rationale Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains one of the most aggressive subtypes due to its poor immunogenicity and resistance to systemic therapies. Methods Here, we report a multifunctional NIR-II light-triggered theranostic nanoplatform, termed LQPO, that integrates liposome, Ti 3 C 2 quantum dots (QDs), perfluorohexane (PFH), and ozone to enable multimodal imaging-guided photo-gas synergistic therapy. The QDs, embedded within the liposomal bilayer, act as highly efficient NIR-II photothermal transducers, while the PFH core serves as a liquid-gas phase-change medium capable of dissolving and releasing ozone under localized heating. Results Upon NIR-II irradiation, LQPO produced strong photothermal and photoacoustic signals for real-time photoacoustic (PA) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging, accompanied by vaporization of the PFH core and burst release of ozone. This spatiotemporally coordinated cascade induced potent oxidative stress and hyperthermia, synergistically driving GSDME-dependent pyroptosis and immunogenic cell death (ICD). The resulting “in situ vaccination” effect remodeled the tumor immune microenvironment and primed tumors for PD-1 blockade therapy. In vivo , NIR-II-activated LQPO achieved efficient tumor accumulation, strong PA/CEUS imaging contrast, and pronounced inhibition of both primary and abscopal tumors when combined with αPD-1 therapy. No significant systemic toxicity was observed, confirming its favorable biosafety. Conclusions Overall, this study establishes a single-laser-activated nanoplatform that unifies real-time multimodal imaging and photo-gas synergistic therapy, and converts localized treatment into a systemic antitumor immune response upon integration with checkpoint inhibition.

Yinuo Liu,Somia Yassin Hussain Abdalkarim,Shuping Wu,Yuheng Liu,Zainab M.H. El-Qahtani,Hou-Yong Yu,Ammar Yaser,Jia-Fu Zhu

Responsive wound dressings that operate on the responsive mechanism of “external light stimulation-material photothermal conversion-local microenvironment regulation” are key for protecting wound surfaces, promoting healing, and providing antibacterial effects. This work presents an intercalated structure of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)/MoS 2 nanosheets through an innovative “exfoliation-functionalization” strategy. Additionally, CNC-MoS 2 nanosheets serve as highly effective photothermal fillers in polylactic acid (PLA) membranes for wound dressing. These membranes demonstrate excellent UV-blocking capabilities, superior moisture absorption, and good breathability. Remarkably, the membrane with 7 wt% CNC-MoS 2 achieves a 400% increase in moisture absorption, with a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 1025 g/m 2 /day. The membranes also demonstrate excellent photothermal conversion capacity: under irradiation at 2 W/cm 2 , the surface temperature of the membrane with a 7 wt% CNC-MoS 2 content increases by 25.8 °C. It remains stable in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), demonstrating its potential for use in photothermal therapy within moist wound environments. Upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, the hybrid membrane exhibits enhanced antibacterial activity, resulting in 3 mm inhibition zones for both E. coli and S. aureus . The cell biocompatibility reaches 99.5% and migration rate reaches 51.2% after 24 h with NIR. This study provides a strategy for developing responsive wound dressings, offering an innovative solution for complex wound care.

Luminescence properties and NIR-II ratiometric thermometry of Er³ ⁺/Ho³ ⁺/Yb³ ⁺-doped Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ perovskite

Zhiqi Yao,Kejie Li,Jiaqi Zhao,Haicheng Xia,Zuoling Fu,Sung Heum Park

A RE-doped Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 perovskite-based luminescence material is developed. • Dual NIR-II emissions of Ho 3+ /Er 3+ are achieved under 980 nm excitation. • High performance (Sr=1.3% K-1) phonon-assisted ratiometric thermometer is constructed. High-performance optical thermometers operating in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window hold great promise for biomedical applications due to their tissue penetration depth and minimal autofluorescence. However, developing reliable NIR-II thermometers with high sensitivity and robust performance across a wide temperature range remains a challenge. Herein, the luminescence properties and NIR-II ratiometric thermometric performance of Er 3+ , Ho 3+ , Yb 3+ co-doped Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 (BTO) perovskite oxide were investigated. Upon 980 nm excitation, NIR-II emission from Er 3+ at 1560 nm ( 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 15/2 ) and Ho 3+ at 1200 nm ( 5 I 6 → 5 I 8 ) was achieved. A ratiometric thermometer was constructed using the temperature-dependent intensity ratio, I Er /I Ho . Relying on the thermal dependence of this ratio, the BTO system exhibits a relative sensitivity (S r ) of 1.3% at 333 K. Furthermore, the results suggest that phonon characteristics of the BTO host influence energy-transfer processes and NIR-II thermometric performance, highlighting importance of host properties in designing rare-earth-doped NIR-II thermometric materials. Hollow Manganese-Based Nanoplatform for NIR-II/MRI Imaging-Guided Chemo/Chemodynamic/Photo-Therapy of Cancer

Zhu Lijun,Xiong Jiabao,Du Zhong,Ma Kaikai,Chu Chenyang,Zhang Chi,Huang Siyu,Gao Yuxiang,Zhang Linxue,Wu Qinfen,Dong Biao,Alifu Nuernisha

Hollow manganese-dioxide-based nanoplatforms, which combine hollow structures with the intrinsic theranostic properties of Mn 2+ , have shown great potential for precise tumor diagnosis and treatment. However, single imaging or therapeutic modalities are still insufficient for high requirements of precise cancer theranostics. Herein, a hollow manganese-based theranostic nanoplatform, MnO 2 –IR-820-Q/DOX@TMTP1 nanocomposite (Mn-NCs), was designed and synthesized. With the assistance of the Mn-NCs, near-infrared-II (NIR-II, 900–1700 nm) fluorescence imaging with high spatial resolution and low autofluorescence was combined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for highly efficient and precise multimodal imaging of cervical tumors. The organic cyanine dye IR-820 and PbS@CdS quantum dots (QDs) were integrated to form a hybrid nanocomposite (IR-820-Q) with strong NIR-II fluorescence emission, which was subsequently assembled onto a MnO 2 nanocarrier to enable MRI and protect IR-820-Q from degradation. The hollow MnO 2 nanoshells served as a nanoscale structural framework for IR-820-Q/DOX loading, tumor microenvironment-responsive degradation, and Mn 2+ -mediated imaging/therapeutic functions. The cervical tumor-targeting peptide TMTP1 was introduced to improve the tumor-targeting potential of the nanocomposite, enabling NIR-II fluorescence visualization of primary tumors and lymph node metastatic lesions. Therefore, Mn-NCs are well suited for tumor-targeted imaging-guided intervention of cervical cancer and lymphatic metastasis. By constructing the theranostic nanoplatform, the photothermal therapy (PTT) as well as photodynamic therapy (PDT) effect from the IR-820 was enhanced, and with the hydroxyl radicals (via Fenton-like reaction) of Mn 2+ in the tumor microenvironment, effective chemodynamic therapy (CDT) was also achieved. The loading of doxorubicin (DOX) further endowed the nanoplatform with a chemotherapeutic capability. Thus, the developed theranostic nanoplatform showed strong NIR-II fluorescence/MRI-guided synergistic PTT/PDT/CDT and chemotherapy, which significantly improved the therapeutic outcomes. This study demonstrates a promising strategy for precise cervical cancer diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the potential of organic–inorganic hybrid nanomaterials for clinical translation.

NIR-Triggered H2O2 Release from LA-CP@Fe3O4 Nanoparticles for Precise Antimicrobial Therapy and Wound Healing

Yue Wang,Long Zhang,Sijie Zhang,Shuyue Li,Xingyan Wang,Wenhao Liu,Feng Yang,Xueyi Liu,Yi Hao,Ruixia Gao,Sicen Wang,Jingang An

Bacterial infections pose a severe global health threat with rising mortality, driving the need for alternative therapies. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), which converts endogenous H2O2 into lethal hydroxyl radicals (•OH) via Fenton reactions, offers a promising solution. Copper peroxide (CuO2) nanodots have recently attracted considerable research interest because of their capacity to generate H2O2. Despite this advantage, their practical use in antibacterial applications is severely limited by their poor stability. In this study, we developed a near-infrared (NIR)-triggered nanoplatform, LA-CP@Fe3O4, by encapsulating CuO2-loaded iron tetraoxide nanoparticles with the phase-change material lauric acid (LA). This system synergistically combines a Fe2+/Fe3+-Cu+/Cu2+ dual-metal catalytic network for enhanced •OH generation with NIR-triggered photothermal activation (a photothermal conversion efficiency of 39.21%), allowing spatiotemporally controlled therapeutic release while stabilizing CuO2 nanodots. In vitro, the platform achieved 99.9% bactericidal efficiency via self-supplied H2O2 and targeted ROS generation. In vivo, it exhibited excellent biocompatibility, accelerated wound healing with an 88.0% reduction in wound area by day 7, and effective NIR-triggered antibacterial activity. These results collectively establish a groundbreaking approach for precision antibacterial therapy with strong clinical translation potential.
