A new water-soluble coumarin-based fluorescent probe for the detection of Fe3+ and its application in living cells and zebrafish

Yaqin Nong,Xiaowei Su,Yinyue Xu,Qiujuan Chen,Xiaochen Liu,Xing Xia,Wenya Chen,Peiyuan Li,Rui Chen,Lini Huo

The pollution caused by heavy metals poses a significant threat to both the natural environment and human health. Therefore, developing straightforward and efficient analytical methods for detecting heavy metal ions is crucial. Given that Fe3+ plays an essential role in biological systems, researchers have worked hard to develop tests that specifically identify Fe3+ in clinical, pharmacological, and environmental settings. Seven novel coumarin amino acid-based Fe3+ fluorescent probes were designed and synthesized in this paper, and their structures were confirmed by 1H/13C NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Spectroscopic tests demonstrated that three compounds (TAC-4, TAC-5, and TAC-7) identified Fe3+ specifically and in particular were able to distinguish between Fe3+ and Fe2+. For example, the fluorescent probe TAC-5 is characterized by its strong selectivity and sensitivity to Fe3+, as evidenced by a large change in fluorescence intensity, a rapid response time (30 seconds), a low detection limit (1.1 μM), and good solubility in water (up to 50%). Furthermore, TAC-5 was successfully used to detect changes in Fe3+ in zebrafish and HeLa Cells and to recognize Fe3+ in the presence of a chelating agent (EDTA). These results are expected to improve the development of new sensitive and selective fluorescence sensors for Fe3+.

Electronic structure modulation in quinoline derivatives through substituent-mediated effects: Development of AIE fluorescent probes for Fe3+ detection in water samples

Longjie Wang,Yuchen Zhang,Yibo Chen,Xiangdi Huang,Mingxia Feng,Zhigang Ma,Yanxiong Liu,Linlin Chen,Liyan Zheng,Qiue Cao

Iron (Fe 3+ ) is an essential trace element in biological organisms. Abnormal concentrations of Fe 3+ in aquatic possess the potential to disrupt normal physiological and metabolic processes in living organisms. Consequently, the pursuit of developing fluorescent probes for detecting Fe 3+ concentrations in water samples is highly significant. The lone electron pair on the nitrogen atom of quinoline demonstrates outstanding coordination capabilities, enabling the selective detection of metal ions through coordination. Nevertheless, the interaction between metal ions and quinoline-based fluorescent probes tends to lead to nanoparticle aggregation, causing aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomena. This severely restricts the practical application of these probes. To address this challenge, the study utilizes quinoline as the foundational framework and modulates the excited-state electronic structure of quinoline derivatives through substituent effects . This facilitates the transition from ACQ to aggregation-induced emission (AIE). By integrating theoretical calculations, the paper proposes a comprehensive strategy for designing AIE molecules based on quinoline. This contribution provides innovative perspectives on AIE molecule design. Ultimately, the AIE property of the 8-MQB molecule is harnessed to develop a fluorescent probe capable of detecting Fe 3+ in water samples. The fluorescence intensity exhibits a robust linear correlation with Fe 3+ concentrations within the range of 5.0 μM to 0.3 mM. Moreover, the probe demonstrates exceptional resistance to interference from other metal ions. In conclusion, this research presents a universal strategy for designing AIE molecules and introduces an AIE probe for the rapid detection of Fe 3+ concentrations in water samples.

Enhanced Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle by a novel 2D/2D FeS/ACN composite for rapid photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline-based wastewater

Caiwen Wu,Shan Huang,Xing Cao,Zexiong Huang,Yanjuan Zhang,Zuqiang Huang,Huayu Hu,Tao Gan

Fe-based photo-Fenton process is widely used to remove antibiotic in wastewater, however, the synthesis of efficient and stable catalysts to solve the problems of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ions cycling and iron sludge formation of FeS-based catalysts is challenging. Herein, a strategy combining mechanical activation and pyrolysis was proposed to construct a novel FeS/amorphous carbon nitride (2D/2D FeS/ACN) composite with a two-dimensional (2D) stacked structure, where the FeS and ACN connected by Fe x −N bonds. The removal rates of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlorotetracycline over 2D/2D FeS/ACN both surpassed 96.0 % within 30 min in the photo-Fenton system, and the photo-Fenton system exhibited a much higher total organic carbon (TOC) removal than the Fenton and photo systems, giving an improvement of rate constant to 3.0 and 6.5 times, respectively. The excellent performance attributed to the fact that the photogenerated electrons were trapped by the sulfur vacancy and directed to the Fe active site for Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling via a highly-efficient charge transfer channel (Fe x −N), resulting in efficiently circulating Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ . Moreover, due to the involvement of photogenerated electrons in the reduction of Fe 3+ to decrease the consumption of S (S 2− and S n 2− ), 2D/2D FeS/ACN showed superior stability after five cycles, inhibiting the formation of iron sludge. This work provides a new route for the acceleration of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling in Fe-based photo-Fenton process for the efficient treatment of tetracycline-based wastewater.

Construction of Fe3+-tea polyphenols-amino acids co-coordination system for preparation of flame retardant, antibacterial and UV-resistant Lyocell fabric

Jieyun Zhao,Lina Jiang,Chunlong Zuo,Lei Tan,Wei Tan,Yuanlin Ren,Ping Li,Xiaohui Liu

Triggered by heightened public safety concerns and the imperative of sustainable chemistry, an urgent demand has emerged for the development of eco-friendly and durable flame retardant Lyocell fibers. However, reconciling high flame retardancy, washing durability, mechanical strength, and formaldehyde-free processing within an environmentally benign and feasible approach remains a significant challenge. To address the issue, a novel co-coordination system of biomass tea polyphenols, L-lysine and Fe 3+ , cooperating with covalent linking of 3-epoxypropyl trimethoxysilane was constructed. Compared with Lyocell fabric, the treated Lyocell fabric exhibited substantial reductions of 70.35% for total heat release (THR) and 61.82% for peak heat release rate (PHRR), alongside a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 26.8% even after 50 laundering cycles. Meanwhile, the modified fabric had excellent UV resistance, antibacterial and hydrophobic properties. Encouragingly, the proposed modification process basically retained the high mechanical properties of the Lyocell fabrics, providing a sustainable, green route toward multifunctional, durable Lyocell textiles for protective and technical apparel applications.

A fast, sensitive and stable fluorescent fiber-optic chemosensor for quantitative detection of Fe3+ in real water and HepG2 living cells

Yan-Hui He,Jia-Ping Lai,Hui Sun,Zhi-Min Chen,Sheng Lan

Based on the fluorescence quenching mechanism of Fe 3+ to moxifloxacin (MOX), a fluorescence probe has been found and exhibits high sensitivity, unique selectivity and good stability toward Fe 3+ . Moreover, the MOX probe can rapidly response to the change of Fe 3+ concentration in pure aqueous solution. The MOX probe was utilized for quantitative determination of Fe 3+ in real water sample, showing a good linear relationship ( R   =   0.9980) between (F 0 –F) and [Fe 3+ ] 1/2 at the Fe 3+ concentration from 0.05–15   μM. The detection limit was found to be 0.032   μM, which is much lower than that of most literature reported. Furthermore, by merging the MOX probe and a Y-tape fiber-optic spectrometer, a fluorescent fiber-optic chemosensor has been developed to quantitatively monitor Fe 3+ in HepG2 living cells in vivo. The monitoring results are consistence with that obtained from the confocal imaging technique. The established method possesses the advantages of fast responsive, high sensitivity, unique selectivity, very stability and good repeatability for quantitative monitoring Fe 3+ in real water and HepG2 living cells. In addition, the complex mechanism of MOX toward Fe 3+ has also been explored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and mass spectra (MS) in the present work.

Thermal-driven self-healing waterborne polyurethane with robust mechanical properties based on reversible phenol-carbamate network and Fe3+-catechol coordination bond

Yang Liu,Zhengjun Li,Zetian Zhang,Junchao Wang,Liying Sun,Taoling Xie

Realizing environment-friendly and thermal-driven self-healing polymers with robust mechanical properties is an important challenge for the development of next-generation smart materials. Herein, by combining dynamic phenol-carbamate bonds and Fe 3+ -catechol coordination bonds in polymer chains, novel hyperbranched waterborne polyurethanes (FTWPU) with desirable thermal-driven self-healing properties were prepared through two steps, i.e., introducing tannic acid to prepare tannic acid based waterborne polyurethane (TWPU) bearing phenol-carbamate bonds firstly, and subsequently further incorporating Fe 3+ ions to prepare FTWPU in possession of Fe 3+ -catechol moieties. The results exhibited that TWPU possessed good emulsion stability with differing tannic acid content, and improved thermal and mechanical properties, owing to the presence of cross-linking between polyurethane chains, and FTWPU still possessed outstanding storage stability, as well as much higher mechanical properties (tensile strength of 18.4 ± 0.4 MPa, elongation at break of 533.5 ± 5.2 %). Meanwhile, FTWPU presented desirable self-healing ability (i.e., healing efficiencies of tensile strength and elongation at break were 87.5 % and 91.9 %, respectively) after healing under 120 °C for 1.5 h and 85 °C for 30 min, demonstrating a satisfactory balance between good self-healing ability and high mechanical properties. Importantly, reversible phenol-carbamate bonds and metal coordination bonds are predominant factors during the healing process of FTWPU films, as well as high mobility of soft segments and hydrogen bonding effect play a significant role to achieve ultimate healing ability. We can envision that the promising design idea, based on synergistic effect between phenol-carbamate bonds and Fe 3+ -catechol coordination bonds, could provide inspiration for preparing self-healing polymers with superior mechanical properties.

Fe3+-Substituted Sr6YAl(BO3)6 Red Pigments Designed Without Pb, Cd, or Hg: Colour Performance, Chemical Stability, and Elemental Release Screening

Jiajun Feng,Qimiao Huang,Junyuan Liang,Yuyuan Chen,Qiuhua Huang,Zihong Jiang,Peixuan Chen,Jian Kang,Xiang Li

Red inorganic pigments traditionally rely on Pb-, Cd-, Hg-, or Cr(VI)-based colourants that carry avoidable hazard and exposure risks. Here, a family of Sr6YAl1−xFex(BO3)6(0 ≤ x ≤ 1) pigments was prepared by solid-state reaction using Fe3+as the chromophore and no Pb-, Cd-, Hg-, Cr(VI)-, or As-containing precursors. X-ray diffraction shows that the trigonal Sr6YAl(BO3)6-type framework (space group R-3) is retained as a single phase throughout the series; on the basis of isovalent charge, six-coordinate geometry and matched ionic radii, Fe3+substitutes for octahedral Al3+to form a continuous solid solution, and SEM-EDS mapping confirms a broadly homogeneous, single-phase Fe-containing borate. Increasing Fe content strengthens visible absorption and moves the colour from white to a light reddish-orange (warm tan), with the x = 1 end member givingL* = 69.69,a* = 10.08,b* = 12.79 andC* = 16.28. The colour is essentially unchanged in water and dilute acetic acid, shows a moderate shift in alkaline media (ΔE* = 8.05–10.21), and changes markedly only in 0.1 mol L−1HCl (ΔE* = 15.07). Elemental release was screened by immersing 1.00 g of powder in 50 mL of water (H1), 0.01 mol L−1acetic acid (H2) or 0.1 mol L−1HCl (H3) for 24 h at room temperature, with each leachate read three times by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Water and dilute acid gave similar, modest release, whereas HCl mobilized substantial B, Sr and Y (530.72, 4639.42 and 470.54 mg L−1, i.e., up to 41.87%, 45.15% and 27.08% of the nominal inventory) but very little Fe (0.156 mg L−1, only ≈0.014% of the Fe inventory, and below detection in H1 and H2). The Fe chromophore is thus effectively immobilized even when the borate framework is attacked, decoupling colouration from chromophore leaching. The pigments demonstrate source-level elimination of regulated toxic metals together with strong chromophore retention; the non-standardized extraction provides a conservative release-potential screen rather than a regulatory compliance determination.

Carboxymethyl chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate hydrogels incorporating Fe3+/curcumin/tannic acid self-assembled nanocomplex with self-healing, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties

De Zhou,Zejian Xu,Tian Lan,Xiaonan Sui

Hydrogels, due to their excellent properties, were widely noted and held great potential for application in wound healing. However, conventional wound dressings are limited by insufficient antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which restricted their effectiveness in treating infected wounds. In this study, a multifunctional hydrogel (PCS/Cur@Fe&TA) was fabricated from carboxymethyl chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, and sodium alginate via a freeze-thaw cycle method to evaluate its potential as a wound dressing. The hydrogel incorporated nanocomplex composed of curcumin, tannic acid, and Fe 3+ , which endowed the material with enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The resulting hydrogel exhibited excellent swelling capacity (400–800%) and water holding capacity (>62%), and a good degradation rate, enabling it to maintain a moist microenvironment conducive to wound healing. Moreover, after hydrogel treatment, the cell viability remained >80%, >99% hemocompatibility (hemolysis rate < 1%), and significantly enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities ( P  < 0.05). The hydrogel showed marked antibacterial activity, with inhibition zones of 1.03 cm against E. coli and 0.61 cm against S. aureus . Overall, the developed hydrogel exhibits considerable promise as a therapeutic material for accelerating wound healing. Download: Download high-res image (157KB) Download: Download full-size image

Facile green synthesis of multifunctional nitrogen-doped carbon dots via sequential non-enzymatic browning reactions for Fe3+ sensing and anti-counterfeiting ink

Jiamin Li,Yulu Liu,Yuanyuan Lei,Zehong Ji,Yingzhi Shen,Yuchi Chen,Dongqing Cheng,Wenxiao Jiang,Xing Chen,Guangming Li

Conventional methodologies for fabricating carbon dots (CDs) frequently necessitate sophisticated instrumentation, rigorous operational parameters, and noxious chemical agents, thereby raising concerns regarding their sustainability. In this work, we developed an eco-friendly synthetic route for producing nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N‑CDs) under mild reaction conditions. The presented approach harnesses consecutive non-enzymatic browning interactions between ascorbic acid and arginine. Upon heating to 60 °C, oxidative decomposition of ascorbic acid produced aldehyde intermediates, subsequently initiating Maillard reactions with arginine to form N-CDs. The resultant N‑CDs demonstrated uniform spherical morphology with mean diameter measuring 20.3 nm, accompanied by outstanding aqueous dispersibility and stable fluorescence emission, achieving quantum yield of 23.5%. Significantly, these N‑CDs exhibited specific sensitivity toward Fe3+, and mechanistic studies confirmed the inner filter effect as the underlying quenching mechanism. The analytical efficacy of N‑CDs as fluorescent probes for Fe3+ quantification was validated, revealing linear detection spanning 10–200 μM alongside detection limit of 2.2 μM. When applied to authentic specimens, the N‑CDs delivered satisfactory recovery rates between 98.32% and 110.22%. Furthermore, the N‑CDs demonstrated considerable utility as fluorescent inks for anti-counterfeiting purposes. This research presents a sustainable and cost-effective fabrication strategy for N‑CDs, emphasizing their prospective applications in environmental surveillance and security printing.

The Synergism of β-Cyclodextrin and Fe3+ Enabled Anti-Swelling Ion-Conductive Hydrogels for Multimodal Underwater Sensing Aided by Machine Learning Algorithms

Hao Dong,Chuanliu Liu,Yiming Luo,Dongyu Si,Menghan Zhao,Fangyu Zhao,Yixue Zhang,Wei Zeng,Eman Ramadan Elsharkawy,Terence Xiaoteng Liu,Zeinhom M. El-Bahy,Hua Hou,Zhanhu Guo,Huige Wei

As the key sensing component of flexible sensors, conductive hydrogels are prone to mechanical property degradation and signal deterioration owing to water absorption and swelling in underwater environments. Herein, an anti-swelling ion-conducting hydrogels are designed by incorporating ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) into acrylamide-acrylic acid copolymer (MA) via a one-pot method, short for MAF x D y . Thanks to the synergism of β-CD and Fe 3+ , the swelling ratio of MAF x D y is significantly reduced comparted to its counterparts, for example, 4% for MAF 0.2 D 0.3 , compared to 760% for MAF 0.2 hydrogel without β-CD and 526% for MAD 0.3 without Fe 3+ after soaking in deionized water for 30 days. Notably, the multimodal underwater sensor constructed based on the MAF 0.2 D 0.3 hydrogel can not only monitor underwater human joint motion but also realizes the accurate transmission of underwater information with the help of Morse code. Moreover, aided by machine learning algorithms, this study proposes a novel shortcut key recognition strategy to achieve precise and rapid information transmission via letter recognition (with a recognition accuracy of 98.6%), dramatically shortening the time required for underwater communication. This study provides innovative solutions by the rational design of anti-swelling ion-conducting hydrogels for reliable and fast underwater communications.
