Low-Powered MEMS Sensor-Array System for Detection of H2/CH4 for the Potential Application of SIBO Diagnosis

Weiwei Qin,Xuefeng Hu,Ming Zhou,Jilei Yang,Jiaming Liu,Peipei Li,Xiaoliang Wang,Liping Tan,Yali Bi,Wenjuan Yu,Wei Zhang

The detection of hydrogen-methane (H2-CH4) in exhaled breath takes on paramount importance for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) diagnosis. However, the concentrations of H2 and CH4 associated with SIBO are significantly lower, reaching only 20 and 12 ppm, respectively. Furthermore, the detection of these gases can be compromised by the presence of various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and relative humidity (RH) in exhaled breath. In this study, a low-powered system with three high-performance tin dioxide (SnO2)-based micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) gas sensors for H2-CH4-VOCs detection was modified by magnetron sputtering deposition and coating, which are named as Pd/SnO2-M (M means magnetron), Pd/SnO2-C (C means coating), and SnO2-D (D means multiple doping), respectively. Particularly, the Pd/SnO2-M sensor shows excellent selectivity, high sensitivity, and low detection limitation (down to 0.033 ppm) toward H2, which is attributed to the compact grains of the film and the Pd catalysis for the dissociation of H2 molecule into two active hydrogen atoms better than other gases. In addition, the Pd/SnO2-C sensor exhibits high sensitivity and low detection limitation toward H2 (down to 0.186 ppm) and CH4 (down to 1.1 ppm) since doped Pd also gives rise to adsorbed oxygen species (Oads) above the SnO2 surface besides its catalysis. Moreover, the assembled MEMS sensor array system demonstrates gas recognition capability based on linear discriminant analysis (LDA) under controlled single-gas conditions in high-humidity environments. Then, the as-modified MEMS sensor array system is a promising platform for H2-CH4 detection.

Enhanced thermal stability and selectivity of GO/BN composite membranes via ionic liquid intercalation for efficient H2 purification

Xiaojun Li,Tingting Wang,Jingyu Shang,Lei Dong,Junjie Wu,Tuo Ji,Jiahua Zhu,Lilong Zhang,Liwen Mu,Xiaohua Lu,Han Lin

Graphene oxide (GO) lamellar membranes hold significant promise for gas separation but suffer from structural instability, particularly under high temperature, which deteriorates their separation performance. To address this, we developed a composite membrane by incorporating exfoliated boron nitride (BN) nanosheets into a GO matrix, followed by ionic liquid (IL) intercalation. Liquid nitrogen (LN 2 )-exfoliated BN nanosheets, characterized by uniformity and rigidity, were integrated to construct stable interlayer nanochannels. The resulting GO/BN-LN 2 membrane achieved a H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 15.5 with a H 2 permeance of 505 GPU (gas permeation unit). More importantly, the intercalation of ILs (e.g., [Bmim][TF 2 N]) into the GO/BN interlayers yielded a synergistic enhancement. The ILs functioned as a selective CO 2 -absorbing layer and a “thermal buffer”, significantly improving the membrane's thermal stability. Consequently, the optimized GO/BN@IL composite membrane (d-spacing is 7.9 Å, and membrane thickness is 0.88 μm) maintained excellent performance at 363 K, exhibiting a markedly enhanced H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 23.26 and a high H 2 permeance of 1020 GPU. This work demonstrates a facile strategy to simultaneously boost the selectivity, permeance, and thermal resilience of 2D lamellar membranes, showcasing their great potential for high-temperature H 2 purification applications.

One-step synthesis of Al2O3/Al-doped g-C3N4 heterostructures for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution and CO2 reduction

Jawad Ahmad Jrar,Tao Sunle,Muhammad Bilal,Faheem K. Butt,Alauddin,Muhammad Faizan,Imed Boukhris,Xiaozhi Wang,Yongcai Zhang,Jianhua Hou

Photocatalytic water splitting and CO 2 reduction offer renewable pathways for generating green fuels. Nevertheless, traditional photocatalysts are often limited by rapid electron-hole recombination. To address this difficulty, we devised a one-step thermal calcination method that concurrently doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) with aluminum and generates Al 2 O 3 in situ, an Al-doped g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction. Upon excitation by visible light, photo-excited electrons in Al-doped g-C 3 N 4 transfer to the surface Al 2 O 3 nano domains, which act as an electron sink due to their defective and reduced bandgap structure, and holes remain on g-C 3 N 4 . The effective charge separation is facilitated by interfacial band bending and the consequent internal electric field at the heterojunction that collectively inhibits electron-hole recombination and extends charge-carrier lifetimes for redox processes. The Al-doped g-C 3 N 4 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst attains a hydrogen evolution rate 9.4 times greater and a CO 2 reduction rate 6.5 folds greater than pristine CN when exposed to visible-light illumination. The improvement in performance highlights the capability of our single-step designed photocatalyst for solar-driven hydrogen production and CO 2 -to-fuel conversion, supporting the goal of carbon-neutral fuels and the progress of renewable green energy solutions.

Construction of heterojunction interface between SnO2 nanorods and MOF-derived Co3O4 nanoparticles fabricated via AACVD for H2 sensor

Yanhu Li,Qinhe Pan,Kaixiang Shi,Quanbing Liu,Yanan Guo,Qingji Wang

Metal-organic-framework (MOF)-derived oxide is a promising gas-sensing material candidate because of its high surface area, porosity and structural diversity. Utilizing Aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD), the fabrication of MOF-derived films performs characteristic morphology and controlled size, which greatly improve the gas-sensing performance. Herein, the heterojunction interface between SnO 2 nanorods and MOF-derived Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles was prepared by two step AACVD. Firstly, SnO 2 nanorods were directly grown on flat electrode. Subsequently, size-controlled MOF-derived Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were coated on SnO 2 nanorods. The hydrogen sensors were developed based on the above sensing materials with different deposition time ( 0, 30, 40 and 50 min) to demonstrate gas-sensing performance. The Co 3 O 4 /SnO 2 -40 sensor exhibits a response value of 305 % to 100 ppm of H 2 at 310°C, which is 4.4 times of the SnO 2 sensor. Moreover, the Co 3 O 4 /SnO 2 -40 sensor retains a measurable response of 4 % even at an extremely low hydrogen concentration of 200 ppb. The superior sensing performance of this sensor can be attributed to the large surface area and the p-n heterojunction interface. Consequently, the construction of heterojunction via AACVD offers an approach for fabricating high performance hydrogen sensors.

Engineering sodium-decorated bifunctional Au-Ti sites to boost molecular transfer for propene epoxidation with H2 and O2

Dong Lin,Yang Xu,Xiuhui Zheng,Wei Sheng,Zhenyi Liu,Yinglong Yan,Yu Cao,Yibin Liu,Xiang Feng,De Chen,Chaohe Yang

Regulating the microenvironment of active sites is crucial to boost the performance of direct propene epoxidation with H 2 and O 2 . Herein, the enhanced surface transfer of H 2 O 2 intermediates was first achieved by sodium-decorated Au-Ti bifunctional active sites. Combined with multi-techniques (e.g., operando UV–vis–NIR system, DFT studies and quantitative model calculations), it is found that the sodium-decorated silanols (Si-ONa species) on the TS-1 support enhance the formation of Ti-OOH intermediates by restraining H 2 O 2 decomposition. In addition, sodium-decorated silanols improves the desorption of propylene oxide, suppressing its ring-opening and formation for the carbonaceous deposits. Moreover, the sodium-decorated Au nanoparticles with smaller diameter and higher electron density further strengthen O 2 adsorption and boost the H 2 O 2 formation. This work not only provides fundamental understandings on the microenvironment of Au-Ti bifunctional catalysts but also sheds new light on enhancing the performance by boosting the surface molecular transfer.

A Tale of Two Sites: Neighboring Atomically Dispersed Pt Sites Cooperatively Remove Trace H2 in CO-Rich Stream

Yi Rao,Yutong Wu,Xueya Dai,Ya-Wen Zhang,Gaowu Qin,Wei Qi,Song Li

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit distinct catalytic behavior compared with nano-catalysts because of their unique atomic coordination environment without the direct bonding between identical metal centers. How these single atom sites interact with each other and influence the catalytic performance remains unveiled as designing densely populated but stable SACs is still an enormous challenge to date. Here, a fabrication strategy for embedding high areal density single-atom Pt sites via a defect engineering approach is demonstrated. Similar to the synergistic mechanism in binuclear homogeneous catalysts, from both experimental and theoretical results, it is proved that electrons would redistribute between the two oxo-bridged paired Pt sites after hydrogen adsorption on one site, which enables the other Pt site to have high CO oxidation activity at mild-temperature. The dynamic electronic interaction between neighboring Pt sites is found to be distance dependent. These new SACs with abundant Pt-O-Pt paired structures can improve the efficiency of CO chemical purification.

Microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca12Al14O33 bi-functional material for H2 production from sorption enhanced water gas shift

Chunxiao Zhang,Yingjie Li,Zirui He,Jianli Zhao,Dong Wang

Herein, a hollow microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 bi-functional material was prepared by the bio-template method and used for H 2 production from sorption enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS). The microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 exhibits excellent CO 2 capture and H 2 production performance in SEWGS/regeneration cycles. The stable hollow microtubular structure improves available adsorption and catalytic sites in Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 for CO 2 capture and H 2 production. Mn addition improves CO 2 affinity capacity of the microtubular material. The Fe-Mn interaction increases redox ability of Fe 3+ /Fe 3+, 2+ , which promotes CO conversion. Moreover, the formed Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 and Ca 2 MnO 4 both increase oxygen vacancies to promote catalytic activity of the microtubular material for WGS and its CO 2 capture capacity. The CO conversions for the microtubular material with the Fe/Mn/Al/Ca molar ratio= 10/2/10/100 are 98.7% and 94.0% after 20 cycles under the mild and severe calcination conditions, respectively. The hollow microtubular bi-functional material shows good prospect for efficient H 2 production from SEWGS.

Continuous g-C3N4 layer-coated porous TiO2 fibers with enhanced photocatalytic activity toward H2 evolution and dye degradation

Jing Liu,Jinxiao Zheng,Guichu Yue,Huaike Li,Zhaoyue Liu,Yong Zhao,Nü Wang,Chenghua Sun,Zhimin Cui

TiO2/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts with various merits, including low-cost, non-toxic, and environment friendliness, have potential application for producing clean energy and removing organic pollutants to deal with the global energy shortage and environmental contamination. Coating a continuous g-C3N4 layer on TiO2 fibers to form a core/shell structure that could improve the separation and transit efficiency of photo-induced carriers in photocatalytic reactions is still a challenge. In this work, porous TiO2 (P-TiO2)@g-C3N4 fibers were prepared by a hard template-assisted electrospinning method together with the g-C3N4 precursor in an immersing and calcination process. The continuous g-C3N4 layer was fully packed around the P-TiO2 fibers tightly to form a TiO2@g-C3N4 core/shell composite with a strong TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction, which greatly enhanced the separation efficiency of photo-induced electrons and holes. Moreover, the great length–diameter ratio configuration of the fiber catalyst was favorable for the recycling of the catalyst. The P-TiO2@g-C3N4 core/shell composite exhibited a significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance both in H2 generation and dye degradation reactions under visible light irradiation, owing to the specific P-TiO2@g-C3N4 core/shell structure and the high-quality TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction in the photocatalyst. This work offers a promising strategy to produce photocatalysts with high efficiency in visible light through a rational structure design.

Enhanced H2 production from steam gasification of biomass by red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce bi-functional material

Xianyao Yan,Yingjie Li,Chaoying Sun,Chunxiao Zhang,Liguo Yang,Xiaoxu Fan,Leizhe Chu

The sorption-enhanced steam gasification of biomass (SESGB) using CaO-based materials is considered as a promising method for H 2 production. Ca-Al-Ce material has been reported as a good bi-functional material in SESGB process. Red mud is a solid waste in aluminium industry with large yield, which is rich in Fe 2 O 3 . In this work, a red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce bi-functional material was prepared by wet-mechanical mixing method for H 2 production from SESGB. The CO 2 capture, H 2 production, and tar reduction performances during SESGB process using the red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce bi-functional material were studied. The results show that the optimum addition amount of red mud in the bi-functional material is 5 wt%. After 20 SESGB cycles, the H 2 concentration using the red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce material achieves 65.1 vol%, which is 82.4% higher than that using Ca-Al-Ce material. Besides, with the addition of red mud in the bi-functional material, the tar, residue char yields and CO 2 concentration decrease by 25.2%, 8.6% and 52.2%, respectively. Fe 2 O 3 in the red mud reacts with CaO to form Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 in the 1st cycle, and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 is stable during 20 cycles, which is beneficial for the generation of oxygen vacancy. The oxidation states of Fe species in the material increase with the number of SESGB cycles, thus the catalytic effects on water gas shift reaction and tar reduction are promoted. The red mud addition is the key factor that results in high H 2 production, CO 2 capture and tar reduction performances, so the red mud-doped Ca-Al-Ce material appears promising for SESGB.

Spray deposition of colorimetric H2 detector with Pd/MoO3 nanocomposites for rapid hydrogen leakage monitoring at room temperature

Xiaolu Sun,Lifeng Hao,Liuyang Chen,Xingkui Guo,Chuang Han,Jingfu Chen,Weicheng Jiao,Rongguo Wang,Xiaodong He

Here, we demonstrate a rapidly responsive colorimetric hydrogen detector based on Pd/MoO 3 nanocomposites for hydrogen leakage monitoring at room temperature. The Mo 5+ -rich MoO 3 nanobelts are synthesized via a simple one-step hydrothermal method by adding NaCl as the mineralizer. The structure of the detector is fabricated by a general spray deposition technique, not only forming uniform porous microstructures to promote the adsorption and diffusion of H 2 but also solving the issue of performance degradation in ambient conditions by the strategy of on-site fabrication for immediate detection. The detector exhibits a rapid color change which could be recognized with naked eyes within 10 s even in as low as 1% of H 2 at room temperature (25 °C) owing to the high content of active absorption sites (Mo 5+ ) and the large surface area. The detector is also tested on a hydrogen storage tank with a prefabricated defect in the inner liner and exhibits a prompt and intense color change at the exact hydrogen leakage site, demonstrating its high efficiency in the visual hydrogen leakage detection in complicated systems. The facile fabrication approach as well as the rapid visual detection strategy enable the detector extensively applicable in the hydrogen industry.

Pyridazine doped g-C3N4 with nitrogen defects and spongy structure for efficient tetracycline photodegradation and photocatalytic H2 evolution

Xiaohui Zhan,Yue Zhao,Yanping Sun,Chen Lei,He Wang,Huixiang Shi

In this study, with thiourea and 3-aminopyridazine as precursors, the graphite-phase carbon nitride (ACN-x) with nitrogen defects and sponge structure is prepared via the introduction of the benzene-like ring structure of pyridazine replacing a “melem” group through hydrothermal procedure combined with calcination. It is made possible by the attraction of three hydrogen bond receptors for 3-aminopyrazine to lone pair electrons on the “melem” molecule. The remarkable extensively photocatalytic activity can be attributed to three effects of the introduction of 3-aminopyridazine: (i)formation of nitrogen defects between adjacent tri-s-triazine groups; (ii)formation of effective charge transfer channels within the tri-s-triazine group; (iii)the spongy structure exposed abundant amino groups(-NH 3 ) at edge sites, combining with the internal amino group and as hole stabilizer to prolong the excited state life of photocatalyst. The photogenerated carrier migration and separation efficiency improved effectively through the tuning synergy. As a result, ACN-x exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity, with hydrogen production efficiency of up to 11331.74 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is approximately 94.5 times that of the pristine g-C 3 N 4 (119.88 μmol g −1  h −1 ). The degradation constants of TC and RhB are 0.0498min −1 and 0.129min −1 , which are 3.32 and 6.35 times of the pristine g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The TC degradation in different initial concentrations, pH, dissolved organic matter concentrations, and water sources is conducted to prove the environmental adaptability of the ACN-x system. The mechanism of the system indicates that ·O 2 − plays an important role, and the ·OH and h + play a minor role in the TC photocatalytic degradation . Finally, the TC degradation possible pathway is proposed.

Integrating Covalent Organic Framework with Transition Metal Phosphide for Noble-Metal-Free Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Ge Yan,Xiaodong Sun,Kailai Zhang,Yu Zhang,Hui Li,Yuhai Dou,Ding Yuan,Hongwei Huang,Baohua Jia,Hao Li,Tianyi Ma

2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are considered as one kind of the most promising crystalline porous materials for solar-driven hydrogen production. However, adding noble metal co-catalysts into the COFs-based photocatalytic system is always indispensable. Herein, through a simple solvothermal synthesis method, TpPa-1-COF, a typical 2D COF, which displays a wide light absorption region, is rationally combined with transition metal phosphides (TMPs) to fabricate three TMPs/TpPa-1-COF hybrid materials, named Ni 12 P 5 (Ni 2 P or CoP)/TpPa-1-COF. The incorporated TMPs can be served as electron collectors for accelerating the transfer of charges on TpPa-1-COF, thus the composites are demonstrated to be efficient photocatalysts for promoting water splitting. Benefitting from the richer surface reactive sites and lower H* formation energy barrier, the Ni 12 P 5 can most effectively improve the photocatalytic performance of the TpPa-1-COF, and the H 2 evolution rate can reach up to 31.6 µmol h −1 , approximately 19 times greater than pristine TpPa-1-COF (1.65 µmol h −1 ), and is comparable to the Pt/TpPa-1-COF (38.8 µmol h −1 ). This work is the first example of combining COFs with TMPs to construct efficient photocatalysts, which may offer new insight for constructing noble-metal-free COF-based photocatalysts.
