Environmental monitoring has become essential for recognizing and mitigating the effects of the increased release of hazardous gases on ecosystems and human health. NO 2 is harmful air pollutant, mainly emitted by combustion sources and is associated with respiratory problems and photochemical smog. The present investigation utilized a simple hydrothermal approach to synthesis Bi 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterostructures designed for the detection of NO 2 gas at low concentrations. The Bi/Sn-2 heterostructure exhibited a remarkable response (R g /R a ) of 105.4 upon exposure to 50 ppm of NO 2 gas. Furthermore, the Bi/Sn-2 heterostructure exhibited significant repeatability in its performance for 8 continuous cycles while ensuring long stability for 30 days. The exceptional responsiveness and selectivity towards NO 2 gas have been attributed to the formation of a p-n junction, augmented by the combined effect of increased surface area and unique morphological characteristics. This study demonstrates a viable approach to develop metal oxides heterojunctions that can detect low concentrations of NO 2 gas.

Abstract Sb2S3 is a promising thin-film photovoltaic absorber owing to its suitable band gap, high absorption coefficient, and earth-abundant composition. However, its performance remains limited by defect-induced carrier recombination and interfacial inhomogeneity at the electron transport layer (ETL)/Sb2S3 heterojunction, particularly when CdS is employed as an ETL. Herein, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) with tailored molecular weight is introduced into the SnO2 colloidal solution to regulate nanoparticle dispersion and interfacial wettability, enabling the formation of a conformal and compact PAA-modified SnO2 interlayer on textured fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates. The optimized interlayer promotes the subsequent deposition of CdS films with improved surface uniformity and high-quality Sb2S3 absorbers with enhanced crystallinity. More importantly, the improved CdS/Sb2S3 interfacial integration suppresses defect-assisted recombination and prolongs the carrier lifetime, facilitating efficient charge transport. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency of Sb2S3 solar cells increased from 7.31% to 8.12%. In addition, the PAA-modified devices retain more than 91% of their initial efficiency after 100 days of ambient storage without encapsulation, significantly outperforming the control devices (80%). This work highlights the critical role of buried interface regulation in directing heterojunction growth and provides an effective interface engineering strategy for high-performance Sb2S3 photovoltaics.

Formation of heterojunction via composite nanomaterials represents a proficient approach for enhancing gas-sensitivity capabilities. In this paper, the design of a xylene sensor based on SnO 2 /MoO 3 heterojunction structure was reported, where mesoporous SnO 2 was prepared utilizing a facile carbon template and then loaded with MoO 3 . The chemical composition, microstructure, and gas-sensing performance of the composite material were systematically characterized and studied. The SnO 2 /MoO 3 sensor achieved a response value of 28.3 at 200 °C for 20 ppm xylene, significantly higher than pure SnO 2 and MoO 3 , with a detection limit reaching 55 ppb. The results indicate that the SnO 2 /MoO 3 composite material significantly enhances sensing response and reduces response/recovery time through its mesoporous structure and n-n heterojunction characteristics. Finally, we focused on analyzing the band structure of the SnO 2 /MoO 3 heterojunction and the xylene sensing mechanism. This work contributes to the study of gas-sensing properties in SnO 2 -based composite materials and provides new insights for real-time and precise detection of xylene.

High sensitivity acetone sensor can realize the non-invasive detection of diabetic patients. SnO 2 and Ce doped SnO 2 with nanofibers structure were prepared from environmentally friendly and renewable nanocrystalline cellulose as a template. The preparation method is highly efficient and environmentally friendly. The characterization results indicate that the SnO 2 and Ce doped SnO 2 nanofibers are composed of 3–5 nm SnO 2 nanoparticles, which exhibited strong catalytic ability with quantum dots effect and high specific surface area. In addition, DFT calculations revealed that doped Ce activated the surrounding Sn atoms, significantly enhancing the adsorption capacity of Sn for acetone. Ce doping reduces the band gap of SnO 2 , which is more conducive to the excitation transition of electrons. And the difference in ionic radius between Ce 3 + and Sn 4+ will cause lattice distortion and introduce more oxygen vacancies, further enhancing the adsorption capacity of acetone. In situ infrared spectroscopy investigated the catalytic oxidation process of acetone on the sensor surface. The 3 wt% Ce doped SnO 2 nanofibers exhibited good sensing performance and low detection limit for acetone gas at 170°C. The efforts in the research have demonstrated that Ce doped SnO 2 nanofibers may be potential candidates for the detection of exhaled gases in diabetes.

The directional self-transport of water droplets holds significant application value in fields such as microfluidics and water collection. Current research mostly focuses on single wettability gradients or fixed surface structures, lacking systematic exploration of dynamic wettability regulation and SnO 2 -based intelligent surfaces. In this study, a triangular-patterned SnO 2 surface (TPSS) was constructed via anodic oxidation combined with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Dynamic regulation of surface wettability was achieved by adjusting the UV irradiation time, and the influence of wettability changes on the self-transport behavior of water droplets was systematically investigated. The results showed that no directional self-transport of water droplets occurred when the water contact angle (WCA) was greater than 33°; water droplets transported directionally in a droplet-like form when the WCA ranged from 10° to 33°; when the WCA was less than 10°, water droplets spread into a film-like form with a significant decrease in transport speed, but the addition of a second water droplet could recondense them and restore their self-transport capability. Combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and in-situ optical observation, the synergistic regulation mechanism of Laplace pressure difference and hysteresis force was clarified. Moderate UV irradiation enhances surface hydrophilicity, and the Laplace force generated by the curvature difference overcomes the hysteresis resistance to drive the droplet transport. Excessive UV irradiation, causing the water droplets to spread and the Laplace force to attenuate, while the liquid film can restore the droplet-like form and transport capability through a buffering effect. This study provides an experimental basis and theoretical support for the design of dynamically adjustable microscale water droplet self-transport intelligent surfaces, expands the application of SnO 2 in fields such as microfluidics and micro-detection, and realizes an efficient fog collection function based on TPSS.

Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is widely applied in modern power systems because of its excellent insulation and arc-quenching properties. However, under abnormal conditions such as partial discharge or overheating, SF 6 may decompose to produce hazardous gases including H 2 S, which threaten both equipment reliability and maintenance safety. Therefore, the development of highly sensitive and reliable H 2 S sensors is of great importance for the monitoring of SF 6 decomposition products. In this work, NiCo-LDH/SnO 2 composite nanomaterials are synthesized via a hydrothermal-calcination method by uniformly loading SnO 2 nanocrystals onto layered NiCo-LDH nanosheets. The influence of different NiCo-LDH/SnO 2 mass ratios on the structural characteristics and gas-sensing properties is systematically investigated. Among the prepared samples, the NiCo-LDH/SnO 2 (1:2) composite exhibits the best sensing performance, with a relatively high specific surface area of 103.8 m 2 g -1 , mesoporous structures with pore sizes mainly distributed at 5-6 nm, and an oxygen vacancy concentration of 58.05 %. The corresponding sensor shows a high response of 12.68 toward 30 ppm H 2 S at 240 °C, with response and recovery times of 56 s and 47 s, respectively. In addition, the sensor demonstrates good linearity (R 2 = 0.99799), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. The enhanced sensing performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of the p-n heterojunction, optimized mesoporous structure, relatively high specific surface area, and abundant oxygen vacancies. This work provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance H 2 S sensing materials for monitoring SF 6 decomposition gases in GIS equipment.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is promising for energy storage due to its 2D layered structure and large interlayer spacing. However, it suffers from limited capacity, severe sheet restacking, and detrimental surface F groups that exacerbate side reactions, leading to poor rate performance and cycling stability. Herein, we employ surface chemical engineering to replace surface F with -OH groups on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, effectively suppressing interfacial side reactions, lowering interfacial impedance, and enhancing Li + transport. Furthermore, the hydrolysis reaction and self-assembly anchor SnO 2 clusters (CLs) onto the Ti 3 C 2 MXene interface, inhibiting nanosheet restacking, maintaining Li + diffusion channels and active sites while contributing to capacity. With these synergistic effects, the prepared SnO 2 CLs/MXene heterostructure delivers a high reversible capacity of 914.5 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 , 476.3 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 , and retains 88.6% capacity after 500 cycles at 2 A g −1 , with negligible capacity decay observed at 100 mA g −1 over 500 cycles.

Chlorine (Cl 2 ) is a highly hazardous and corrosive substance that can cause severe respiratory problems and skin burns in humans at low doses. The effective detection of Cl 2 has become critical for protecting both the ecological environment and public health. Herein, the oxygen vacancy-abundant SnO 2 were synthesized using SnS as template followed by the calcination method. The resultant SnO 2 -800 sensor exhibits improved sensing response to Cl 2 (about 205–10 ppm) at room temperature, together with a trace detection limit of 100 ppb. Such excellent sensing properties could be assigned to several reasons including the unique cross-linked structure, the appropriate amount of grain boundaries, and especially sufficient oxygen vacancies. The XPS, GC-MS techniques and DFT theoretical calculation were combined used to detailly investigate the sensing mechanism. This work might shed light on the rational design of high-performance sensing materials via defect engineering.

Hydrazine (N 2 H 4 ) is a highly toxic and strongly reducing compound extensively used in aerospace propulsion and industrial synthesis, necessitating its real-time detection essential for environmental and occupational safety. Here, an electrohydrodynamic printing (EHDP) strategy is reported to fabricate a uniform poly(3-hexylthiophene)-SnO 2 (P3HT-SnO 2 ) composite sensing film for room-temperature hydrazine sensing. Structural characterizations reveal homogeneous dispersion of ≈4 nm SnO 2 quantum dots (QDs) on the P3HT matrix and the formation of interface P-N heterojunctions. The P3HT-SnO 2 sensor delivers a remarkable response of 1550% toward 15 ppm N 2 H 4 , an ultralow detection limit of 500 ppb, excellent selectivity against common interfering gases (CO, H 2 , CO 2 , and C 2 H 5 OH), and long-term performance over 90 days. Compared with drop-cast films, the EHDP-printed devices exhibit superior uniformity, tunable thickness, and significantly enhanced response and recovery kinetics, arising from increased active sites, optimized morphology, and accelerated gas adsorption–desorption dynamics. Mechanistic investigations indicated that N 2 H 4 molecules donate electrons, reducing hole density in P3HT and expanding the depletion region at the P3HT-SnO 2 interface, thereby amplifying the resistance change. These results establish EHDP-printed P3HT-SnO 2 hybrid films as a robust platform for highly sensitive, selective, and stable hydrazine detection at room temperature, offering a promising route toward advanced toxic hydrazine gas sensors.

In this work, ZnO@SnO 2 core-shell nanofibers were synthesized through a facile coaxial electrospinning method and used to detect ethanol vapor. The core-shell nanofibers were characterized using various techniques, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS. The characterization results show that the core-shell nanofibers are solid and have a higher concentration of chemisorbed oxygen species on their surface compared to both pure ZnO and SnO 2 nanofibers. The gas-sensing experiment results demonstrate that the core-shell nanofibers exhibit higher sensitivity than both pure nanofibers. Specifically, upon exposure to 100 ppm ethanol vapor at 320 °C, the response of the core-shell nanofibers is 53.2, with minimal cross-sensitivity to other interfering vapors. Additionally, the core-shell nanofibers show good repeatability and long-term stability. The superior sensing performance is attributed to the heterojunction formed between ZnO and SnO 2 , which enhances the surface chemisorption of oxygen species and facilitates efficient charge transfer.

Tin (Sn), owing to its unique electronic structure and inherent suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), has garnered significant attention as an electrocatalyst for nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR). Synthesizing high-performance Sn-based heterostructure catalysts, however, remains a substantial challenge. In this study, we employ a combination of interface engineering and doping strategies to introduce iron (Fe) into the SnS 2 /SnO 2 heterostructure for the first time and develop a novel Fe-SnS 2 /SnO 2 @NF catalyst, which represents the first application of such a catalyst in NRR. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the introduced Fe promotes charge redistribution at the SnS 2 /SnO 2 interface, thereby enhancing the interfacial electric field. This amplified electric field plays a key role in activating orbital interactions and regulating electron distribution, thereby greatly facilitating the conversion of N 2 to NH 3 via a distal binding mechanism. This effect has been rarely reported in previous studies. Notably, the Fe-SnS 2 /SnO 2 @NF catalyst achieves an ammonia yield of 39.05 ± 2.27 μg h −1 cm −2 and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 29.52 ± 0.71% at room temperature, surpassing the NRR activity of other Sn-based materials. This work represents a significant advancement in understanding the role of doping strategies in enhancing the interfacial electric field of heterostructures and provides valuable insights into their effectiveness for nitrogen fixation.

Hydrogen (H2) is colorless, odorless, and has a wide explosive concentration range (4–75 vol %), making rapid and accurate detection of hydrogen leaks essential. This paper demonstrates a method to modify the spatial distribution of nanocrystals (NCs) by adding surfactants to improve the sensing performance. In order to explore its potential for H2 gas-sensing applications, SnO2, containing different mass percentages of PdCu NCs, was dispersed. The results show that the 0.1 wt % PdCu-SnO2 sensor based on surfactant dispersion performs well, with a response to 0.1 vol % H2 that is 18 times higher than that of the undispersed 0.1 wt % PdCu-SnO2 sensor. The enhanced gas-sensing ability after dispersion can be attributed to the fact that the uniform distribution of NCs generates higher quantum efficiency and exposes more active sites on the carrier surface compared to nonuniform distribution. This study provides a simple, novel, and effective method to improve the sensor response.
