Rare earth-doped carbon nitride composite Ce-based metal-organic framework for visible light-driven nitrogen fixation catalysis

Shan Zhu,Sixiao Liu,Lei Zhang,Hang Liu,Xiaoyu Zhou,Yayu Mao,Linshuang Zhang,Tianyi Wang,Chengyin Wang

The utilization of visible light for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation offers a sustainable and eco-friendly strategy for the production of ammonia. The present study focuses on the synthesis of a series of rare earth-doped carbon nitride composite ultraviolet-activated Ce-UiO-66 catalysts, denoted as RECN-actMOF, for efficient nitrogen fixation. Rare earth doping modulates the band structure of carbon nitride, facilitating the formation of a type-I heterojunction with Ce-UiO-66 and promoting photocarrier generation at nitrogen fixation sites. Among these, Sm-doped SmCN-actMOF exhibits high visible-light absorption and efficient utilization of photocarriers, resulting in an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.58% under 495 nm light irradiation. This study provides a pathway for enhancing the nitrogen fixation efficiency of photocatalysts through the incorporation of rare earth elements, and expanding the potential applications of rare earth materials in the field of photocatalysis.

Removal of arsenic from water by silver nanoparticles and Fe-Ce mixed oxide supported on polymeric anion exchanger

Li Li,Su-juan Yu,Rong-gang Zheng,Qing-cun Li,Rui Liu,Jing-fu Liu

By encapsulating nanoscale particles of goethite (α-FeO(OH)), hydrous ceric oxide (CeO 2 ·H 2 O, HCO) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the pores of polystyrene anion exchanger D201, a novel nanocomposite FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 was prepared for the effective removal of arsenic from water. The isotherm study shows that FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 has excellent adsorption performance for As(III) and As(V), with an increased adsorption capacity of As(III) to 40.12 mg/g compared to that of 22.03 mg/g by the composite adsorbent without AgNPs (FeO(OH)-HCO-D201). The adsorption kinetics data showed that the sorption rate of FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 for As(III) is less than that for As(V), and the adsorption of As(III) and As(V) were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model and the pseudo-first-order model, respectively. Neutral or basic conditions are favored for the adsorption of As(III/V) by FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201. Compared with nitrate/chloride/bicarbonate, sulfate/silicate/phosphate showed more remarkable inhibition of arsenic removal by FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201, whereas natural organic matter showed no interference to the arsenic removal. The As(V) adsorption involved different interactions such as electrostatic attraction and surface complexation, while the adsorption of As(III) involved the part oxidization of As(III) to As(V) and the simultaneous adsorption of As(III) and As(V). In addition to the Ce(IV) in CeO 2 ·H 2 O acted as an oxidant, the synergistic effect of α-FeO(OH) and AgNPs also contributed to the oxidization of As(III) to As(V). Moreover, the reusable property suggested that this FeO(OH)-HCO-Ag-D201 nanocomposite has great potential for arsenic-contaminated water purification.

Xu Linsheng,Qin Tian,Li Yuanfeng,Guo Hao,Hu Qiao,Xiong Jing,Ma Yaxiao,Zhang Peng,Yu Xiaolin,Liu Xi,Liu Yunpeng,Zhao Zhen,Zou Jianping,Wei Yuechang

Simultaneous oxidation of soot and CH 4 emitted from natural gas-diesel dual fuel engine is a new challenge. Herein, a robust catalyst of binary Ru-Pd components supported on three-dimensional ordered macro-mesoporous cerium-zirconium oxide (RuPd/3DOMM-CZO) is elaborately constructed. Ordered macro-mesopore structure in novel hierarchical porous cerium-zirconium oxide can respectively enhance mass transfer of soot and gaseous reactants, and binary Ru-Pd active components can improve activation for NO and CH 4 . RuPd/3DOMM-CZO catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance and stability during simultaneous soot and CH 4 oxidation. Based on the results of characterizations and theoretical calculations, Ru site in binary Ru-Pd components is responsible for catalyzing NO oxidation to NO 2 , which is key step of NO x -assisted soot oxidation mechanism, while Pd site can activate the C-H bond of CH 4 for boosting oxidation to CO 2 ; the catalytic cooperation between Ru and Pd atoms can promote the rate-determining step to realize simultaneous oxidation of soot and CH 4 .

Effect of Ce4+ on the Osteogenic Activity of Ce-Doped Magnesium Phosphate Composite Materials in Repairing Bone Defects

Qiaoyun Liu,Yifeng Yu,Yuhang Liu,Liangjie Yuan,Zheng Wang,Baiwen Qi,Aixi Yu

As the most abundant rare earth element, cerium (Ce) can endow implanted bone repair materials with excellent performance. With magnesium phosphate composite material (MPC) as models, Ce is introduced to improve the osteogenic induction of MPC. A series of Ce-doped MPC (CMPC) with Ce molar ratios of 1, 3, and 5% can be successfully synthesized by the precursor method. The obtained results indicate that CMPC has advantages such as reliable biosafety, excellent osteogenic activity, and excellent mechanical properties. When the content of Ce is 1%, the synergistic effect of Ce 4+ and Mg 2+ released from CMPC-1 is more conducive to promoting cell proliferation and enhancing osteogenic activity, which can accelerate the deposition of calcium junctions and promote the repair of bone defects. These results will provide new routes to improve the bioactivity of CMPC, thereby promoting its clinical application research.

Comparative Study of Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene over Porous Metal Oxide Catalysts Derived from (Mn, Ce, Co)-MOFs

Xue Luo,Yingying Xue,Leilei Xu,Linshui Lian,Cai-e Wu,Yan Cui,Weixin Zou,Lin Dong,Fei Gao,Mindong Chen

This study presents a systematic investigation into the catalytic oxidation of toluene using metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived porous metal oxide catalysts obtained through controlled pyrolysis. The MOF-derived catalysts (Mn3O4-BTC, CeO2-BTC, Co3O4-BTC) demonstrated remarkable improvements in catalytic activity and stability compared to their commercial counterparts (Mn3O4-c, CeO2-c, Co3O4-c), achieving 90% toluene conversion (T90) at significantly lower temperatures of 240 °C, 241 °C, and 237 °C, respectively. Besides, a comprehensive suite of characterization techniques was employed to elucidate the structure–activity relationships. Specifically, various traditional and in situ characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 programmed reduction (H2-TPR), online-tandem thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (online-tandem TG-MS), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS), were employed to elucidate crystallinity, porosity, morphology analysis, probe surface chemistry, redox properties, real-time tracking of thermal decomposition, and reaction mechanisms during the catalytic oxidation of toluene. It was found that the enhanced catalytic performance could be attributed to the synergistic effects of a high surface area, well-dispersed active sites, and abundant oxygen vacancies. These insights provided fundamental insights into the design and optimization of MOF-derived catalysts for efficient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) abatement in environmental catalysis.

MOF-Derived Ce–Co–S Hollow Polyhedral Nanocages via Dual-MOF Templating for Enhanced Bifunctional Overall Water Splitting

Jin Liang,Tian Lei,YaXi Zhang,Ye Yuan,Guang Yang,Li Zhang

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread recognition as versatile catalyst precursors owing to their unique structural merits and straightforward synthetic accessibility. Herein, the UiO-66(Ce)/ZIF-67 composite MOF precursor was constructed through a hybridization strategy, and subsequently transformed into a nonprecious metal sulfide catalyst (denoted as CeS/CoSx) employing hydrothermal sulfidation. Benefiting from the CeS/CoSx architecturally engineered hollow polyhedral nanocage structure and strong electronic interaction between CeS and CoSx, the composite catalyst demonstrates significantly accelerated electron transfer kinetics and outstanding catalytic activity. In 1.0 M KOH, CeS/CoSx only necessitates an overpotential of 143 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Regarding the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), overpotentials of 250 and 291 mV were required to attain current densities of 10 and 50 mA cm–2, respectively. Remarkably, the assembled CeS/CoSx||CeS/CoSx two-electrode overall water splitting system requires only 1.60 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2. Moreover, during the 40 h continuous electrolysis test, the potential fluctuation remained within 1%. This study provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance, dual-MOF-derived sulfide composite bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Rapid one-pot synthesis of multifunctional UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH2 for detection and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Chaoting Shi,Ninghan Tang,Shan Pu,Hui Xin,Lan Wu,Xiandeng Hou

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used for the antibiotic pollution control. However, it remains a challenge to simple design and synthesis of multifunctional MOFs for sensing and degradation antibiotics. Herein, a multifunctional UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH 2 ratiometric fluorescence sensing and photocatalytic degradation platform was rapidly and simply constructed at room temperature by a one-pot method using a dielectric barrier discharge device. The mixed-metal centers and mixed-ligands of this platform enabled effective ratiometric fluorescence sensing of tetracycline (TC), along with a visual fluorescence shift from blue to yellow-green color. The platform demonstrated a detection of TC ranged from 200 nM to 15 μM, with a detection limit of 43 nM. Moreover, the UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH 2 exhibited strong light absorption and efficient photogenerated carrier separation, thus offering excellent degradation performance of TC compared with that of MOFs with single metal center, mixed ligands or mixed metal centers. The mechanism of fluorescence detection and potential charge transfer pathways by the UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH 2 were analyzed. This work provided a new approach for the simple design and synthesis of multifunctional MOFs platforms.

Ru/CeO2 catalyst derived from Ce-based MOF for highly efficient catalytic CO2 methanation integrated with renewable hydrogen

Yucan He,Dongsen Mao,Qiangsheng Guo,Jun Yu

A series of highly ordered microporous Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized as the precursors for catalyst construction. The corresponding Ru catalysts were prepared by Ru impregnation on the derived CeO 2 by pyrolysis of Ce-MOF, and investigated for the CH 4 synthesis via CO 2 hydrogenation. Among the catalysts, Ru catalyst supported on the CeO 2 -B derived from Ce-BDC exhibited a highly competitive efficiency for CO 2 methanation, giving a CH 4 selectivity of 100% with a CO 2 conversion of 62% at 275 °C and 0.1 MPa, and the CH 4 productivity reached 0.49 mol/(mol Ru ·h). Characterization results revealed that more oxygen vacancies and corresponding surface oxygen species formed on the surface of CeO 2 -B derived from Ce-BDC caused to the stronger interaction between Ru and CeO 2 -B, which promoted the CO 2 adsorption and hydrogenation capacity of the catalyst, resulting in its better catalytic property. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) studies further revealed that the route of HCOO* into CH 4 is a more competitive way of CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 4 .

A Smart Catalytic System with In Situ Dynamic Current-Tuned Pd-Ce Diatomic Interactions for Enhanced Methane Oxidation

Songyun Tao,Xiao Wang,Cheng Rao,Kaijie Liu,Yannan Li,Zhaoxu Yuan,Guan Peng,Yang Lou,Jun Ye,Hai Liu,Zeshu Zhang,Xiangguang Yang,Yibo Zhang,Shuyan Song

Enhancing catalytic performance through precise control of active site interactions still poses significant challenges. Diverging from conventional static methods, this study pioneers an innovative current-assisted approach to achieve precise, in situ dynamic tuning of electron transfer specifically within Pd-Ce diatomic sites. The groundbreaking current-assisted Pd 1 -Ce 1 /ATO catalyst achieves unprecedentedly low-temperature methane combustion performance, with a remarkable T 50 of 181 °C and a record-high turnover frequency (TOF 260 °C ) of 4.25 × 10 −2 s −1 . The current-induced augmentation of electron transfer from Ce to Pd markedly elevates the electron density around Pd centers , orchestrating dynamic modulation to synergistically enhance catalysis. This modulation amplifies the electron backdonation from electron-rich Pd to the methane C─H bond, facilitating efficient C─H bond scission, while promoting lattice oxygen mobility near Pd 1 -Ce 1 sites by tuning orbital energy matching, thus significantly amplifying the catalyst's oxidation capacity. The synergistic interplay of these electronically tuned factors promotes the formation of a four-center transition state (H 3 C δ − -Pd-O-H δ + ), effectively weakening the C─H bond and dramatically accelerating methane catalytic oxidation. This work not only achieves ultra-low-temperature catalytic activity with minimal noble metal loading but also establishes a paradigm shift in the rational design of advanced combustion catalysts, enabling on-demand modulation of catalytic activity through real-time regulation of inter-site interactions .

Defective UiO-66(Ce) supported Ni nanoparticles with optimized microenvironment and electronic state for efficient olefin hydrogenation reaction

Rushuo Li,Tao Ban,Danfeng Zhao,Fajie Hu,Jing Lin,Xiubing Huang,Zhiping Tao,Ge Wang

Defect engineering improves the catalytic performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) loaded metal nanoparticles (MNPs@MOFs), but there is still a challenge in defining the structure-activity relationships. Herein, the content of linker-missing defects in UiO-66(Ce) was systematically regulated via formic acid as the modulators, and defective UiO-66(Ce) loaded Ni nanoparticles (NPs) were constructed for dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) hydrogenation. The fine regulation of defect engineering and reduction conditions affected the structure properties of UiO-66(Ce) and the electronic metal-support interaction between MOFs and Ni NPs, thereby optimizing the microenvironment and electronic state of Ni NPs. The optimized U(Ce)-40eq with suitable defects, small size and structure stability effectively promoted the production of highly dispersed abundant electron-deficient Ni 0 active sites, enhancing the adsorption and activation of H 2 and C=C bonds, especially accelerating the rate-determining step. Therefore, U(Ce)-40eq loaded 5 wt% Ni NPs achieved DCPD saturated hydrogenation to tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (70 °C, 2 MPa, 90 min), superior to most high-loading Ni-based catalysts. This work reveals the synergistic mechanism of MOFs defect engineering and electronic structure of Ni NPs, providing effective guidance for the precise preparation of highly efficient and stable MNPs@MOFs heterogeneous catalysts.

Simple preparation of poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) hydrogel for highly efficient removal of La(III) and Ce(III)

Lei Tan,Zengjin Fu,Jing Wang,Wenyue Jiao,Tianwen Huang,Yan Hao,Yicheng Wang,Tingrui Lin

In this paper, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) hydrogel was synthesized following a one-step free-radical polymerization with N, N -methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linker. La(III) and Ce(III) were effectively removed from acidic aqueous solutions by using PSS hydrogel. FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, zeta potential analysis, and XPS were used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of PSS hydrogel. By varying pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial La(III) and Ce(III) ions concentrations, and interfering ions, the adsorption behavior of La(III) and Ce(III) ions on PSS hydrogel was studied. According to the experimental data, PSS hydrogel exhibited adsorption capacities above 200 mg·g −1 for La(III) and 180 mg·g −1 for Ce(III) over a wide pH range. Furthermore, adsorption data was simulated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic equations. For the description of adsorption equilibrium, Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isothermal models were used. According to the results, the Langmuir isotherm equation provided the best fit. Based on the Langmuir isotherm equation, the maximum absorption capacities of La(III) and Ce(III) by PSS hydrogel was 241.0 and 223.7 mg·g −1 , respectively. According to FTIR and XPS analysis, sulfonic acid groups were involved in the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. And ion exchange and complexation were the main mechanisms involved. Finally, reusability tests reveal that the PSS hydrogel can be reused 13 times without losing effectiveness.

Non-radical pathway dominated catalytic oxidation of As(III) with stoichiometric H2O2 over nanoceria

Chao Shan,Yan Liu,Yuhao Huang,Bingcai Pan

Heterogeneous catalysis is a promising approach to achieve efficient As(III) oxidation by H 2 O 2 at circumneutral pH. However, radical-attack pathways dominated catalytic As(III) oxidation over most metal oxides is undesirably associated with low utilization of H 2 O 2 induced by rapid self-quenching of radicals. In this study, we developed a non-radical catalytic route to improve H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency for catalytic As(III) oxidation based on nanoceria. The performance and mechanism of As(III) oxidation by H 2 O 2 was investigated by employing four types of nanoceria with different crystallite sizes (9.1–80.6 nm). At the H 2 O 2 /As(III) molar ratio of 2.0, nanoceria exhibited crystallite size-dependent catalytic activity for oxidation of As(III) over a wide pH range (5–9). Based on comprehensive study including scavenging, enzymatic, and pretreatment experiments and miscellaneous spectroscopy techniques, the catalytic As(III) oxidation over nanoceria was proved to be mainly mediated by the non-radical Ce-hydroperoxo surface complexes, whilst the surface hydroperoxyl radical served as a minor oxidant. In contrast, the roles of dissolved oxygen, homogeneous H 2 O 2 , and OH radical were all negligible. No obvious interconversion of Ce(III)/Ce(IV) was observed by XPS for the catalytic process. Such non-radical pathway enabled a stoichiometric reaction with high H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency (90.5%–122%). Moreover, nanoceria could be recycled for five consecutive runs without desorption/regeneration treatment. This study sheds new light on the development of nanoceria-based catalytic processes for efficient oxidation of As(III).
