A novel oxidation resistant thermoset polymer (MSCB) with excellent thermo-oxidative stability and good solubility was designed and synthesized. To prevent C/C composites from oxidation, a series of MSCB polymer-based coatings were prepared by precursor infiltration and thermal-curing at 300 ℃. The oxidation behaviour of the MSCB-, MSCB/TiO 2 -, MSCB/ZrO 2 - and MSCB/SiC-coated C/C composites was studied. The improved oxidation resistance of the C/C composites was attributed to the good adhesion of the coatings and the formation of a borosilicate protective layer on the surface of the coatings, which was confirmed by the results of TGA, SEM, XPS, and XRD analyses.

Usually the tumor thermal therapy is accompanied with inflammatory reactions, which in turn promote tumor growth and metastasis meanwhile. Herein, we prepared novel trifunctional PEG-IL/ZrO 2 -Ag@SiO 2 nanorattles, which can be used for CT imaging-guided simultaneous tumor microwave thermal therapy and resistance to bacterial infection. Under the microwave irradiation, the nanorattles present excellent microwave thermal properties. Simultaneously, the nanorattles have good antibacterial effect in vitro and in vivo, which can restrain bacterial growth effectively and reduce inflammation response during the microwave thermal therapy. In addition, the nanorattles also have the function of CT imaging, which can monitor the tumor therapy in real time. The strategy of simultaneous microwave thermal therapy and inflammation management effectively inhibits tumor growth in mice with a good anti-tumor effect (96.4%). This proof-of-concept investigation provides a simple and reliable strategy for tumor treatment and inhibiting inflammatory reaction using a multifunctional nanomaterial , indicating the great application prospect in tumor treatment by simultaneous eradicating tumor tissue and managing inflammation.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in situ electrosynthesis by O 2 reduction reaction is a promising alternative to the conventional Fenton treatment of refractory wastewater. However, O 2 mass transfer limitation, cathodic catalyst selectivity, and electron transfer in O 2 reduction remain major engineering obstacles. Here, we have proposed a systematic solution for efficient H 2 O 2 generation and its electro-Fenton (EF) application for refractory organic degradation based on the fabrication of a novel ZrO 2 /CMK-3/PTFE cathode, in which polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) acted as a hydrophobic modifier to strengthen the O 2 mass transfer, ZrO 2 was adopted as a hydrophilic modifier to enhance the electron transfer of O 2 reduction, and mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) was utilized as a catalyst substrate to provide catalytic active sites. Moreover, feasible mass transfer of O 2 from the hydrophobic to the hydrophilic layer was designed to increase the contact between O 2 and the reaction interface. The H 2 O 2 yield of the ZrO 2 /CMK-3/PTFE cathode was significantly improved by approximately 7.56 times compared to that of the conventional gas diffusion cathode under the same conditions. The H 2 O 2 generation rate and Faraday efficiency reached 125.98 mg·cm − 2 ·h − 1 (normalized to 5674.04 mmol·g − 1 ·h − 1 by catalyst loading) and 78.24% at −1.3 V versus standard hydrogen electrode (current density of −252 mA·cm − 2 ), respectively. The high H 2 O 2 yield ensured that sufficient ·OH was produced for excellent EF performance, resulting in a degradation efficiency of over 96% for refractory organics. This study offers a novel engineering solution for the efficient treatment of refractory wastewater using EF technology based on in situ high-yield H 2 O 2 electrosynthesis.

The solid, super, acid catalyst S2O82−/ZrO2–TiO2–SiO2, which has both a strong Brønsted acid and Lewis acid, was prepared and applied in lignin depolymerization. The results indicate that S2O82−/ZrO2–TiO2–SiO2 is an effective catalyst for lignin depolymerisation since the liquid product was almost completely dissolved in ethyl acetate, indicating that it was comprised of mostly oligomeric lignin degradation products. The effect of hydrogenation co-catalysts (Pd/C, Pt/C and Ru/C, Rh/C) were also studied and found to improve the yield of aromatic compounds and the petroleum ether soluble fraction, which are mostly monomeric and dimeric products. The resulting yields of aromatic compounds and petroleum ether soluble products were 14.8% and 46%, respectively, when S2O82−/ZrO2–TiO2–SiO2 and Pt/C mixed catalyst was used at 310 °C for 24 hours. These results show that the use of a combination Brønsted and Lewis acid catalyst in combination with a hydrogenation catalyst (S2O82−/ZrO2–TiO2–SiO2 together with a noble metal catalyst) opens a practical route for efficient lignin depolymerization.

Heavy metals and endocrine disrupters often co-exist in wastewater, while their possible competition behaviours make uptake removal more challenging. Therefore, β-Cyclodextrin based nanocomposite adsorbent was successfully fabricated (β-Cyclodextrin/ZrO 2 ) for the simultaneous uptake of Pb(II) and Bisphenol A from wastewater. FTIR, XRD , and XPS confirmed the successful fabrication of the β-Cyclodextrin/ZrO 2 nanocomposite. In this setting, oxygen-containing groups are primarily responsible for the Pb(II) binding, while the β-Cyclodextrin cavities adsorb Bisphenol A through host-guest interaction, enabling the simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and Bisphenol A. In the mono contaminant system, the nanocomposite displayed prominent removal ability toward Pb(II) and Bisphenol A with adsorption characteristics of pseudo-second-order, Langmuir, and Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities were identified for Pb(II) and Bisphenol A to be 274.4 mg/g and 174.9 mg/g at 298 K, respectively. Most importantly, the β-Cyclodextrin/ZrO 2 could efficiently attain simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and Bisphenol A by avoiding their competitive behaviours was due to the different adsorption mechanisms (electrostatic interaction and host-guest interaction). Moreover, the adsorbed Pb(II) and Bisphenol A could be successfully recovered with a slight decline in nanocomposite removal performance even after 4 cycles in the binary-component system. All these findings provide insights into the fabrication of highly effective adsorbent with separated adsorption sites to treat wastewater bearing heavy metal and endocrine disrupters.

Compared to organic nanofiltration (NF) membranes, ceramic NF membranes exhibit higher stability under harsh conditions such as extreme pH and elevated temperatures. γ-Al 2 O 3 is commonly employed as an interlayer in multilayer ceramic NF membranes, but it is restricted to relatively mild conditions. In this study, on a macroporous alumina hollow fiber support, a boehmite sol coating is transformed from γ-Al 2 O 3 to α-Al 2 O 3 at a reduced phase-transformation temperature under the induction of TiO 2 , forming a uniform ultrafiltration interlayer for the fabrication of SiO 2 -ZrO 2 separation layer in a single step. By dual regulating the TiO 2 doping content in boehmite sol and sintering temperatures, the resulting SiO 2 -ZrO 2 /α-Al 2 O 3 NF membrane with a pore size of 1.4 nm demonstrates extended stability across a wide pH range of 1–13 under elevated temperatures. During the long-term dynamic textile wastewater treatment test, it maintains stable permeance and selectivity for over 24 h at pH 2/12 under 60 °C, significantly outperforming γ-Al 2 O 3 -supported SiO 2 -ZrO 2 membranes. Meanwhile, it displays a permeance of up to 18 LMH/bar and superior dye desalination performance (CR: 99.23%, NaCl <12%). This optimization strategy not only enhances the stability of SiO 2 -ZrO 2 NF membranes with the aid of an α-Al 2 O 3 interlayer but also provides a simplified route for their fabrication.

In this study, a non-noble bimetallic-supported metal oxide catalyst, CuxFe1/ZrO2 rich in oxygen vacancies, was synthesized via dry ball milling for the direct synthesis of N,N′-diphenylurea (DPU) from CO2 and aniline. The optimal Cu5Fe1/ZrO2 catalyst achieved 12.7% aniline conversion with near-100% DPU selectivity (99.9%). Comprehensive characterizations revealed that abundant oxygen vacancies enhance metal–support interaction and serve as primary sites for CO2 adsorption and activation. Combined temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 and CO2 (CO2/NH3-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies elucidated a synergistic acid–base catalytic mechanism. Lewis basic Cu/Fe sites activate CO2, while Lewis acidic Zr4+ sites adsorb and activate aniline, promoting the formation of the key C6H5NH–(CO) intermediate. The catalyst maintained high performance over five cycles, demonstrating excellent stability. This work offers an effective strategy for designing robust non-noble catalysts for CO2 valorization into value-added chemicals.

Objective To develop a self-powered, flexible, and biocompatible piezoelectric energy harvesting device for real-time oral health monitoring and therapeutic applications. Methods A composite membrane was fabricated by combining polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) nanoparticles (0–3.0 wt%) using electrospinning technology. The membrane was characterized morphologically, chemically, mechanically, and piezoelectrically. The resulting piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) was integrated into bite-force testing films, mouthguards, and aligners. Biocompatibility was assessed using CCK-8, LIVE/DEAD, immunofluorescence, and ICP-OES analyses. Results The addition of 1.0 wt% ZrO₂ significantly increased the β-phase content and piezoelectric output, yielding a peak voltage of 0.81 V under 0.5 MPa pressure. A two-layer mouthguard achieved up to 1.05 V, enabling real-time bite-force monitoring with excellent linear response. Biocompatibility tests confirmed no cytotoxicity, along with normal cell adhesion and proliferation. Significance This work provides a biocompatible, self-powered piezoelectric platform that can harvest oral mechanical energy for wearable diagnostics and therapies, offering a promising strategy for advanced, real-time oral healthcare systems.

Modulating the interface between the electron transport layer (ETL) and perovskite to minimize interfacial recombination is pivotal for developing efficient and stable perovskite solar cells. Here, we introduce an ultra-thin ZrO 2 insulating interface layer onto the inner surface of the mesoporous TiO 2 ETL via the chemical bath deposition in the zirconium n-butoxide solution, which alters the interface characteristics between TiO 2 and perovskite for the printable hole-conductor-free mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p-MPSCs). The insulating ZrO 2 interface layer reduces interface defects and suppresses interfacial non-radiative recombination. Furthermore, the ZrO 2 interface layer improves the wettability of the mesoporous TiO 2 ETL, which favors the crystallization of perovskite within the mesoporous scaffold. Meanwhile, the device performance presents thickness dependence on the interface layer. While increased thickness improves the open-circuit voltage, excessive thickness negatively impacts both the short-circuit current density and fill factor. Consequently, an improved power conversion efficiency of 19.9% was achieved for p-MPSCs with the ZrO 2 interface layer at its optimized thickness.

Carbon nanofibres (NFs) are promising high-temperature thermal insulators, but their performance is limited by their high solid thermal conductivities. Although ultrafine, hollow or porous structures can effectively reduce the thermal conductivity, they introduce structural defects that significantly decrease the mechanical properties. To overcome this limitation, we present the ZrO 2 /C NFs prepared using polyacrylonitrile (carbon source) and Zr(SO 4 ) 2 (Zr source) via electrospinning combined with precursor conversion technology and in-situ embedding of ZrO 2 nanocrystals with low solid thermal conductivity in polyacrylonitrile-derived carbon NFs. The ZrO 2 /C NF membranes achieve low thermal conductivities of 0.018 W·m -1 ·K -1 and 0.331 W·m -1 ·K -1 at the ambient temperature and 1200 °C, 64.0% and 40.6% less than those of the carbon NFs, respectively. They also retain remarkable flexibility, high tensile strength (∼1.86 MPa) and thermal stability even after heat treatment at 1200 °C. This work presents a novel approach for the design and fabrication of similar high-performance thermal insulating materials.

Catalytic upcycling of polyolefin (PO) waste into liquid fuels represents a promising strategy for closing the carbon loop but remains challenged by the reliance on noble-metal catalysts and the generation of low-value gaseous byproducts. Here we report a non-noble metal bifunctional catalyst, Ni–W/ZrO2, featuring Ni metal sites for (de)hydrogenation and WOx acid sites for C–C bond cleavage and isomerization. The catalyst enables complete conversion of low-density polyethylene (LDPE, Mw = 96.4 kDa, Đ = 4.6) under mild conditions (250 °C, 3 MPa H2) within 10 h, affording a high liquid fuel yield of 75.6 wt%. The liquid products are dominated by branched alkanes (C5–C20) with a branching index of 85.6%, affording a high research octane number of 88.9, which is comparable to that of commercial gasoline (86.6). Compared to existing non-noble metal systems, Ni–W/ZrO2 exhibits superior catalytic activity and effectively suppresses methane formation. Mechanistic analyses reveal the generation of partially electropositive Ni species that promote C–H bond activation. The catalyst also demonstrates excellent durability over five consecutive cycles and broad compatibility with various polyolefin wastes, providing a cost-effective and scalable strategy for sustainable plastic waste valorization.

Graphical MOFs-templated MgO/ZrO 2 enable highly selective glucose-to-fructose conversion. Structural confinement suppresses MgO agglomeration and tunes basicity, achieving 38.4% yield with 90.9% selectivity. High-selectivity glucose isomerization to fructose is essential for the biorefinery industry and fructose syrup production. In this work, a catalyst with tailored basicity was synthesized via the calcination of a MOFs (metal-organic frameworks)-based composite and employed as a chemo-catalyst for glucose isomerization, achieving high fructose selectivity. Characterization results confirmed that the synthesized catalyst was a composite consisting of and MgO, with MgO highly dispersed within the channels of . The MOFs templating effect restricted particle size and minimized agglomeration of MgO particles, enhancing the interaction between MgO and . This strong interaction effectively modulated the basicity of the catalyst, resulting in the predominance of weak basic sites. As a result, the catalyst demonstrated superior performance in glucose isomerization, achieving a 38.4% fructose yield with 90.9% selectivity at a 10 wt% glucose concentration, outperforming catalysts prepared by conventional methods. However, leaching remains a challenge. This work presents a novel approach for synthesizing highly dispersed mixed oxides and provides an effective catalyst for glucose isomerization.
