Graphical A modified synthesis method on Cu mesh simplifies and enhances the catalyst preparation process and efficiency at a much lower cost. The synergistic interplay between Co and Cu species is further investigated during the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction. The Co-doped Cu mesh catalyst's scalability, cost-effectiveness, and robust performance underscore its potential for industrial applications in 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation. The growing demand for sustainable alternatives to fossil-derived chemicals has spurred significant interest in biomass valorization, with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) emerging as a key platform molecule. In this study, an electrochemical synthesis strategy was employed to synthesize a bimetallic Co-doped Cu mesh catalyst for the HMF oxidation reaction. It exhibited remarkable electrooxidation activity during a 3-h reaction at 1.6 V versus RHE with 83.2% HMF conversion, 99.4% 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) selectivity, and 87.7% Faraday efficiency. X-ray diffraction, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the modified Cu mesh catalyst introduced more Co 3 O 4 species. Additionally, in situ attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy elucidated that Cu species on the Co-doped Cu mesh can adsorb *OH and couple with organic molecules during the reaction process. Cu─Co dual active sites enhance the selective electrochemical oxidation of HMF toward FDCA.

Low-temperature catalytic oxidation has emerged as one of the most effective methods for removing carbon monoxide due to its economic feasibility. Copper-based (Cu-based) catalysts are increasingly regarded as viable alternatives to noble metal catalysts. While the incorporation of indium (In) into Cu-based catalysts has gained popularity, the impact of the In oxide (In2O3) phase on catalyst performance remains unclear. In this study, we prepared two different In2O3 with cubic (cb) and rhombohedral (rh) phases. Cu is supported on In2O3 via the impregnation method. The Cu/In2O3 catalyst with a cubic phase exhibited a higher CO oxidation activity (T90 = 122 °C). The primary reason for this enhanced activity is that the cubic phase of the In2O3 support promoted the generation of the surface Cu+ species. Based on the in situ DRIFTS results, Cu+ species and Cu+-CO species serve as active sites and active intermediates, respectively, in the CO oxidation reaction.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have garnered extensive attentions in recent years as a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries. However, achieving both high capacity and long cyclability in cathode materials remains a challenge for SIB commercialization. P3-type Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 cathodes exhibit high capacity and prominent Na+ diffusion kinetics but suffer from serious capacity decay and structural deterioration due to stress accumulation and phase transformations upon cycling. In this work, a dual modification strategy with both morphology control and element doping is applied to modify the structure and optimize the properties of the P3-type Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 cathode. The modified Na0.67Ni0.26Cu0.07Mn0.67O2 layered cathode with hollow porous microrod structure exhibits an excellent reversible capacity of 167.5 mAh g–1 at 150 mA g–1 and maintains a capacity above 95 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles at 750 mA g–1. For one thing, the specific morphology shortens the Na+ diffusion pathway and releases stress during cycling, leading to excellent rate performance and high cyclability. For another, Cu doping at the Ni site reduces the Na+ diffusion energy barrier and mitigates unfavorable phase transitions. This work demonstrates that the electrochemical performance of P3-type cathodes can be significantly improved by applying a dual modification strategy, resulting in reduced stress accumulation and optimized Na+ migration behavior for high-performance SIBs.

A series of y Cu/Ti x Sn 1-x O 2 catalysts for selective catalytic oxidation (NH 3 -SCO) were synthesized using Ti x Sn 1-x O 2 as catalyst support and CuO as active species. Compared with pure TiO 2 support, the strong metal-support interaction between Cu active species and Ti x Sn 1-x O 2 was significantly promoted by the Sn-doping, thereby improving the catalytic activity and N 2 selectivity of the catalyst, which meets the demand of diesel vehicles to completely convert NH 3 . The results of XRD and HRTEM showed that the particle size of 20 Cu/TiSnO 2 sample is much more highly dispersed. The results of NH 3 -TPD and in-situ DRIFTS indicated that the copper species in 20 Cu/Ti x Sn 1-x O 2 can provide more Lewis acid sites than 20 Cu/TiO 2 , which is conducive to the adsorption and reaction of NH 3 . Meanwhile, XPS results proved that adsorbed oxygen on the catalyst surface is the main active oxygen species. Finally, in-situ DRIFTs and kinetic measurements found that the NH 3 -SCO reaction over 20 Cu/TiSnO 2 and 20 Cu/TiO 2 follow the i-SCR and imide (–NH) mechanisms, respectively. This catalyst will provide solutions for the future design and application of ammonia slip from mobile and stationary sources.

To effectively treat the hydrophobic organic contaminant and utilize an industrial solid waste manganese residue (MR), a novel starch-derived carbon (SC)-decorated and Cu-doped (Fe,Cu)S/CuFe 2 O 4 solid solution (CFS/CFO@SC) was prepared from MR via mechanical activation treatment of precursor materials followed by one-step pyrolysis and applied as a photo-Fenton catalyst to treat a hydrophobic organic compound, 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). Characterization results showed that the CFS/CFO@SC solid solution with unique crystal and electronic structures exhibited high adsorption capacity and catalytic activity , ascribed to that Cu doping and C decorating enhanced its hydrophobicity and BET surface area. The CFS/CFO@SC showed excellent degradation efficiency with nearly 100% of EE2 removal rate in 40 min (degradation rate constant of 0.112 min −1 ), and a high mineralization degree with 95.2% of TOC removal in 180 min. This could be ascribed to that C decorating and the formation of CFS/CFO solid solution promoted the charge transfer in a continuous band, resulting in effective separation of photogenerated holes–electrons (h + –e – ). The strong interaction of Fe–Cu collaborating with the photoelectron could effectively accelerate the recycle of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + , thus generating more active radicals. Moreover, CFS/CFO@SC showed promising stability and recyclability with the EE2 removal rates all >95% after five cycles. This work brings a valuable approach for the rational design of high-performance Fe-based photo-Fenton catalysts for environmental remediation and the valorization of MR.

The aerobic catalytic oxidation of 1,2-propanediol (PDO) over non-noble metal (e.g. Cu) based catalysts usually suffers serious C3 product dissociation at high temperature, thus showing low lactic acid (LA) selectivity. Here, an alternative anaerobic catalysis strategy over spinel copper–iron-oxide magnetic nanoparticles (CuFeOx MNs) with the coexistence of Cu(I) and Cu(II) dual sites is developed for the catalytic transformation of PDO to LA with a quantitative yield of co-product H2 in basic aqueous solution. The absence of O2 is beneficial for enhancing LA production in comparison with the presence of O2. The synergy between Cu(I) and Cu(II) sites in CuFeOx MNs is vital for improving the catalytic performance as compared to Cu2O or CuO catalysts with Cu(I) or Cu(II) sites alone. Cu1Fe1Ox MNs with a Cu/Fe mole ratio of 1/1 exhibit 94.5% LA selectivity and 72.6% PDO conversion at 160 °C for 8 h. Experimental results and DFT calculations suggest that the spinel CuFeOx MN based catalytic PDO transformation follows a favorable pathway of PDO → hydroxyacetone → lactaldehyde → lactic acid for LA production. In addition to the catalytic PDO transformation, the use of CuFeOx MNs can be extended to favor high activity and selectivity in the catalytic transformation of glycerol to LA (98.5% selectivity) and ethylene glycol to glyceric acid (97.8% selectivity). This work highlights the design of an alternative non-noble metal-based CuFeOx MN catalyst for efficiently catalyzing the transformation of bio-based polyols into value-added carboxylic acids.

The present study focused on the Cu-Pb system and investigating the distribution behaviors of various minor elements through the equilibration-quenching-EPMA analysis experimental technique. Obtained results showed that: (1) An intermetallic compound consisting mainly of Cu-Pb-Se-Te formed below 956°C. (2) As, Sb and Sn had similar distribution behaviors, which mainly entered the solid Cu phase at the temperature range of 500–900°C, but became concentrated in the liquid alloy phase at temperature range of 900–1060°C, and their distribution ratios increased along with increasing temperature. (3) Bi was mainly found in the liquid alloy phase, and its distribution ratio ranged from 6.8 to 836.5 at the experimental conditions. (4) Se and Te formed an intermetallic alloy phase under 900°C, and they enriched in the liquid alloy phase between 960°C and 1060°C. (5) Au was mainly found in the solid Cu phase at the temperature range of 500–900°C, and its distribution ratio was about 1.5 at 900–1060°C. The distribution ratio of Ag decreased from 8.7 to 2.3 when increasing the temperature from 500°C to 1060°C. Distribution behavior of As, Sb, Bi and Sn is consistent with their interfacial enthalpies with Cu and Pb.

Cu-Al 2 O 3 -g-C 3 N 4 and Cu-Al 2 O 3 -C-dots were synthesized for the first time to enhance the catalytic activity and utilization of H 2 O 2 . SEM, TEM, XPS, FT-IR, XRD, TPR and solid-state EPR were used to characterize the catalysts. In the Cu-Al 2 O 3 -g-C 3 N 4 system, the electron-rich centre of Cu and electron-deficient site of Al were formed due to the higher electronegativity of Cu. Moreover, Cu ions could coordinate with the hydroxyl on the tri-s-triazine ring of g-C 3 N 4 or the graphene conjugated π-domains of C-dots via the Cu O C linkage so that the orbital interactions involving electron transport from π → Cu also induced the formation of an electron-rich Cu centre and an electron-deficient π-electron conjugated system, resulting in the strengthening of the dual-reaction centres. This mechanism was validated by Roman, EPR and XPS spectra. In addition, EPR experiments demonstrated that two electron-transfer processes formed OH in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The first electron transfer was from the electron-rich Cu centres to H 2 O 2 , and the other was from H 2 O to the electron-deficient site. Thus, more OH were generated and high H 2 O 2 utilization was achieved in the Cu-Al 2 O 3 -g-C 3 N 4 and Cu-Al 2 O 3 -C-dots suspension. Furthermore, the turnover frequency (TOF) for the Cu-Al 2 O 3 -C-dots and Cu-Al 2 O 3 -g-C 3 N 4 dispersions were determined and were found to be much higher than those of the classic homogeneous Fenton reaction. Thus, Cu-Al 2 O 3 -g-C 3 N 4 and Cu-Al 2 O 3 -C-dots showed high activity and stability for the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants under mild conditions.

Although integrated energy storage devices, such as in-plane micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), are attractive for powering portable microelectronic devices, it is still challenging to develop patterning techniques with high practicability and to rationally design and fabricate electrochemically active materials using feasible procedures. Here, we propose a facile solution-immersion method of fabricating interdigitated copper electrodes with an in situ converted array of Cu(OH)2@FeOOH nanotubes (NTs). A copper current collector can be patterned together with widely employed copper circuits by a facile copper-patterning approach based on cost-effective electroless catalytic deposition of copper with patterned Ag catalysts, which is greatly conducive to the integration of in-plane energy storage devices into microelectronic systems. Furthermore, the rationally designed array of Cu(OH)2@FeOOH NTs, which was converted in situ from the patterned copper electrodes, was demonstrated to be an excellent electrochemically active material with advantages that included a porous structure with a large specific surface area, excellent wettability by the electrolyte, short ion diffusion lengths and one-dimensional electron transport pathway. The resulting MSC devices that were fabricated with the interdigitated Cu(OH)2@FeOOH/Cu electrodes exhibited a high specific capacitance (58.0 mF cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2), a high energy density (18.07 μW h cm−2), excellent cycling stability and desirable flexibility.

Perfluoroisobutyronitrile (C 4 F 7 N) mixed with CO 2 has emerged as a promising eco-friendly alternative to sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) in gas-insulated equipment (GIE). However, thermal or discharge faults in GIE inevitably lead to the generation of harmful decomposition by-products, necessitating their prompt removal to safeguard equipment operation and personnel safety. In this study, we propose a nanofiber composite material comprising polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the base and multi-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as the primary adsorbent material for removing typical decomposition components of C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 gas mixture. Utilizing grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we elucidate the selective adsorption mechanisms. Experimental results show that PAN@HKUST-1(Cu) exhibits superior adsorption efficiency for fluorocarbon gases compared to PAN@MIL-101(Cr), while the latter demonstrates better performance for nitrile gases. The PAN@HKUST-1(Cu)/MIL-101(Cr) composite adsorbent effectively removes eight typical harmful decomposition products while minimally affecting C 4 F 7 N. Our findings suggest that PAN@HKUST-1(Cu)/MIL-101(Cr) nanofiber film holds promise as an adsorbent for C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 based GIE.

Developing highly efficient and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is highly demanded, as the OER is recognized as a key half-reaction in water splitting for producing hydrogen; however, this still remains a great challenge. Herein, we design three-dimensional (3D) tubular hierarchical core–shell electrocatalysts for the OER using a simple and highly controllable two-step method. The large-scale tubular Cu(OH)2 arrays are directly grown on Cu foam (CF) at room temperature, followed by the growth of highly porous CoNi carbonate hydroxides (CH) via a low-temperature hydrothermal method on the walls of these Cu(OH)2 nanotubes (NTs). The hollow and open-structured core–shell hierarchical Cu(OH)2@CoNiCH NTs/CF electrode with a large surface area and numerous mesoporous and short diffusion paths can provide many active sites, fast electron transport and easy accessibility of water, leading to an excellent OER activity in an alkaline electrolyte with an overpotential of 288 mV and 326 mV at a current density of 30 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, also with robust durability. This new structure would open an avenue for the advancement of highly efficient OER electrocatalysts.

To overcome the efficiency limitations of cuproptosis in oncology, we engineered a piezoelectric Cu-loaded Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheet system for synergistic cuproptosis and ROS-mediated tumor therapy. The incorporation of Cu2+ not only enhanced the material’s piezoelectric coefficient (d33 = 22.3 pm·V–1) but also facilitated valence-state modulation under ultrasound (US) stimulation. The resulting piezoelectric field significantly promoted charge separation, accelerating Cu2+/Cu+ conversion and boosting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. This strategy synergistically induces tumor cell death through a dual tumoricidal pathway: on one hand, the accumulation of Cu+ under US stimulation further amplifies cuproptosis, and on the other hand, the continuous accumulation of ROS triggers excessive oxidative stress. In a murine breast cancer model, this synergistic approach achieved a 90.6% tumor inhibition rate. This study pioneeringly combines piezoelectric material properties and copper valence transformation, providing insights for breast cancer treatment.
