Cu-based Fenton-like systems have demonstrated high effectiveness in the degradation of organic pollutants, however, challenges still exist to overcome the sluggish cycling of metal ions and fast activation of reactants. Herein, a novel n-p type Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/Cu 2 O photo-Fenton-like catalyst (CFC) was prepared with in-situ reduction of Cu 2 (OH) 3 F and applied for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation. Under optimized condition, the target catalyst (CFC-5) showed excellent activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of approximately 99.93 % in 30 min. The reaction rate constant with CFC-5 was 4.10 and 3.26 times higher than that of Cu 2 (OH) 3 F and Cu 2 O, respectively. Moreover, the Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/Cu 2 O catalyst exhibited highly cycling stability and broad applicability. The results illustrate that construction of Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/Cu 2 O composites facilitates the charge separation and enhances Cu 2+ /Cu + cycling, which benefits the generation of highly oxidizing active species and thus significantly improved the degradation efficiency. Besides, this study offers a versatile method to construct inexpensive and efficient photo-Fenton-like heterojunction catalysts.

The oligomers of carbon suboxide, known as red carbon, exhibit a highly conjugated structure and semiconducting properties. Upon mild heat treatment, it transforms into a carbonaceous framework rich in oxygen surface terminations, called oxocarbon. In this study, the abundant oxygen functionalities are harnessed as anchors to create oxocarbon-supported nanohybrid electrocatalysts. Starting with single atomic Cu (II) strongly coordinated to oxygen atoms on red carbon, the Fehling reaction leads to the formation of Cu 2 O clusters. Simultaneously, a covalent oxocarbon framework emerges via cross-linking, providing robust support for Cu 2 O clusters. Notably, the oxocarbon support effectively stabilizes Cu 2 O clusters of very small size, ensuring their high durability in acidic conditions and the presence of ammonia. The synthesized material exhibits a superior electrocatalytic activity for nitrate reduction under acidic electrolyte conditions, with a high yield rate of ammonium (NH 4 + ) at 3.31 mmol h −1 mg cat −1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 92.5% at a potential of −0.4 V (vs RHE).

The extensive use of refractory organic dyes in the textile, printing, paper, food, and pharmaceutical industries is a significant source of water pollution. In this study, a novel magnetic hollow porous copper-based Fenton-like catalyst using cattail sporopollenin as a skeleton support (CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O) was developed for the first time for the adsorption and efficient degradation of two refractory organic dyes rhodamine B and methylene blue in aqueous environments. Under the optimal conditions, CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O showed complete ability to degrade the mixed dyes. The degradation kinetic constant of CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O increased by 10.57 times compared to the control Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O. The hollow porous structure of cattail sporopollenin (CSp) in CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O not only adsorbed the dyes, but also promoted the continuous generation of active species by facilitating the redox cycling of Cu 2+ /Cu + through the adsorption of Cu 2+ , which synergistically realized the efficient degradation of mixed dyes. Furthermore, CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O showed promising application potentials as follows: degradation rates of over 96 % for mixed dyes in a wide pH range of 3.0–11.0; complete degradation of mixed dyes in various water matrices including ultrapure water, tap water, and Songhua River water; and degradation rates of over 98 % for mixed dyes after six consecutive cycles. Overall, the novel Fenton-like catalyst CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O developed in this study was found to be highly promising for the treatment of organic dye-contaminated water in chemical industries. This study also provided new insight into using the excellent adsorption properties of natural sporopollenin for the Fenton-like catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Glucose monitoring in interstitial skin fluid (ISF) has become a novel approach for diabetes management. In this paper, a minimally invasive sensing system consisted of methacrylated hyaluronic acid (MeHA) based microneedle patches and Au/Cu 2 O nanospheres modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was designed for glucose monitoring in the ISF of living mice. The highly swellable and biocompatible MeHA microneedle patches can effectively extract ISF from the skin, barely cause pain to the living mice. The glucose level in the extracted ISF was detected via an enzyme-free electrochemical sensor using the Au/Cu 2 O nanospheres as the electrocatalyst. The doping of Au into Cu 2 O resulted in a highly conductive and active electrocatalyst for glucose oxidation, which improved the sensing performance of glucose sensor. A wide linear range (0.02 – 6 mM), low detection limit (0.018 mM), and high sensitivity (110.38 μA mM −1 cm −2 ) were obtained under the optimized condition. The obtained results exhibited a comparable trend to those obtained from commercial glucometers. We have combined successfully MeHA patches for ISF extraction with enzyme-free electrochemical glucose sensor. Therefore, this novel sensing system holds great potential for diabetes management in a minimally invasive manner.

A strategy of surface-free-energy-distribution induced selective growth of Au nanograins (AuNGs) on specific positions of Cu2O octahedron surfaces with a series of morphological evolutions has been demonstrated. The surface energy distribution of Cu2O octahedra generally follows the order of {111} facets < crystal edges < vertices and leads to the preferential growth and evolution of the heterostructures. The morphological evolutions and crystal structures of Cu2O and Cu2O–Au hierarchical heterostructures are investigated and discussed. Meanwhile, Cu2O octahedra coated by different amounts of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and HAuCl4 were taken as control and the results indicate that the trend in the selective growth on PVP coated Cu2O octahedra decreased significantly because of the reducing diversity of the surface-free-energy-distribution. The identity and crystal phase structures of these Cu2O, Cu2O–Au and Cu2O–PVP–Au heterostructures are manifested through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometers (EDS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further probes the surface chemical compositions and chemical oxidation state of the as-prepared Cu2O and Cu2O–Au hierarchical heterostructures and test the galvanic reaction between Cu2O and AuCl4−. The growth mechanism of the surface-free-energy-distribution induced selective growth of AuNGs on Cu2O octahedra with morphological evolution is also discussed. The photocatalytic performances of the as-prepared Cu2O and Cu2O–Au hierarchical heterostructures for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) are investigated and the results suggest the substantially enhanced photocatalytic activity of these heterostructures.

Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) has been envisioned as a promising photocathode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water reduction due to its abundance, scalability and nontoxicity. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) Cu 2 O nanorods (NRs) photocathode is prepared by in-situ growing Cu 2 O NRs on a copper foam substrate. The bare 3D Cu 2 O NRs photocathode exhibits a high photocurrent density of −4.02 mA cm −2 at 0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under AM 1.5 G simulated sunlight. The oxygen vacancies enriched Ti 3 C 2 T X flakes are obtained by reducing Ti 3 C 2 T X with H 2 /Ar gas (denoted as H:Ti 3 C 2 T X ). The H:Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu 2 O, Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu 2 O as well as Au/Cu 2 O composite photocathodes are fabricated through a facile dip-coating method. The H:Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu 2 O and Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu 2 O yield a photocurrent density of −5.41 and −4.45 mA cm −2 respectively, which is higher than the bare Cu 2 O and Au/Cu 2 O (−4.31 mA cm −2 ). The results suggest that the Ti 3 C 2 T X is more effective than noble metal Au for improving the PEC performance of Cu 2 O photocathode. The superior performance of H:Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu 2 O is attributed to enriched oxygen vacancies in the H:Ti 3 C 2 T X which can enhance the conductivity, light-harvesting efficiency and charge-transfer ability of fabricated photocathode. A PEC tandem cell with H:Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu 2 O as the photocathode and BiVO 4 as the photoanode is designed for unassisted solar water splitting. Due to the high porosity and optical transmittance of the 3D copper foam substrate, we illuminate the cell from the H:Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu 2 O side rather than from the BiVO 4 side in usual fashion. The present configuration exhibits a 1.6 times higher solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 0.55% than the conventional design with a STH conversion efficiency of 0.34%. The enhanced STH conversion efficiency in our configuration is due to the higher light-harvesting efficiency.

Enhancing the ionization efficiency of saccharides remains a significant challenge in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Herein, novel MOF-derived erythrocyte-like CuO/Cu2O@ZnO–CN nanomaterials were designed as a MALDI matrix for various saccharides’ detection. The ZIF-8-derived ZnO framework maintained its intrinsic porosity while gaining uniformly distributed C/N-doped catalytic sites. Copper oxides integration further induced an erythrocyte-like morphology with a substantially larger surface area. The CuO/Cu2O@ZnO–CN matrix demonstrated superior performance over conventional CHCA and DHB in LDI-MS analysis of saccharides (Xyl, Glc, and Malt), featuring the advantages of excellent conductivity and stability, minimum background interference, excellent ionization efficiency, high salt and protein tolerance, and remarkable specificity. The developed method enabled accurate glucose quantification in human serum (0.5–9 mM linear range, R2 = 0.998) with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.28 mM via internal standardization. Good reproducibility and reliability of the method were verified by intraday (1.7–5.6%) and interday precision (2.2–8.2%) and accuracy (93.8 to 101.6%). Analysis of glucose of human serum from healthy people and diabetes patients indicated the matrix’s potential application in clinical analysis.

The convenient and effective detection of toxins is urgently demanded for food security and human health. Herein, based on the catalytic activity of mimetic peroxidase from the Cu 2 [email protected] (OH) 3 yolk-shell nanocages, a dual-modal multi-colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence immunosensor for the sensitive detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) was successfully developed. For the multi-colorimetric detection, H 2 O 2 can be effectively decomposed by Cu 2 [email protected] (OH) 3 to form ·OH groups, thus Au nanorods (Au NRs) can be etched to exhibit vivid color variations and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) shifts. For the ratiometric fluorescence detection, o -phenylenediamine was oxidized by Cu 2 [email protected] (OH) 3 to form 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Interestingly, the exogenous fluorescence signal source of carbon dots can be quenched by DAP via inner filter effect, while a new emission peak at 563 nm can be discovered, forming a ratiometric fluorescence signal. Due to the independent signals and mutual confirmation, the performance of the dual-modal immunosensor for the detection of OTA was significantly improved, where a broad linear range from 1 ng/L to 10 μg/L with a detection limit of 0.56 ng/L (S/N = 3) was achieved. The sensing strategy was also used to monitor OTA in millet and lake water samples with a satisfied performance.

A novel sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor based on cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O)@copper-metal organic framework (Cu-MOF)@gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) core–shell structure was proposed. Cu 2 O@Cu-MOF@Au attached with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) triple-catalyzed hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) for detecting CEA antigen. In this work, 50 nm Cu 2 O nanospheres were prepared. Using Cu 2 O nanospheres as the core, Cu-MOF was coated on the surface of Cu 2 O nanospheres by reaction of Cu 2 O and ligands. Subsequently, chloroauric acid was reduced to Au NPs without adding any reducing agent and Au NPs dispersed on the surface of Cu-MOF. Finally, the Cu 2 O@Cu-MOF@Au-HRP-Ab 2 nanoprobe was successfully prepared. Immunosensors had good performance due to the following reasons. Firstly, Cu 2 O, Cu-MOF and HRP have excellent catalytic properties for hydrogen peroxide. In addition, the synergistic effect of Cu 2 O, Cu-MOF and HRP promoted the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and tripled amplification of electrical signals. Here, the successfully prepared immunosensor detected carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) sensitively, the detection range was 50 fg/mL–80 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 17 fg/mL. Besides, the proposed immunosensor had good stability, selectivity and specificity. Detection in human serum samples had good results without matrix effect. This provided a new idea for the clinical detection of tumor markers: "metal oxide—metal organic framework—precious metal nanoparticles" (MMP). Graphic abstract

Porous cuprous oxide nanospheres were deposited on reduced graphene oxide (pCu 2 O NS-rGO) by a solvothermal approach that uses hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as the capping agent and L -glutamic acid as the reducing agent. The nanomaterial was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and electrochemical methods. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with pCu 2 O NS-rGO, and the respective electrode displays a well expressed oxidation peak for dopamine (DA) located at 160 mV (vs. SCE). It also gives a strong peak for uric acid (UA) which is separated from the DA peak by 130 mV (vs. SCE). No signals can be detected for ascorbic acid (AA) in concentrations up to 2.0 mM. The findings are exploited in a method for simultaneous determination of UA and DA. The linear ranges are from 1.0 to 138 μM for UA, and from 0.05 to 109 μM for DA even in the presence of relatively high concentrations of AA. The detection limits are 112 nM for UA and 15 nM for DA (at an S/N ratio of 3).

The electrocatalytic oxidation of urea combined with wastewater splitting is considered a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production, characterized by minimal energy consumption. However, its evolution is greatly hindered by the shortage of efficient and easily accessible electrocatalytic materials. Here, a facile electrochemical activation strategy was conceived and proposed to construct a Cu-doped NiOOH nanolayer encapsulated on Cu2O nanodendrites on Cu mesh substrate (Cu-NiOOH/Cu2O/CM) from the electrodeposited Ni/Cu2O/CM heterostructured precatalyst. It was verified that the incorporation of Cu not only facilitates the rapid formation of Ni(III)species but also contributes to the formation of Cu-Ni(III)bifunctional electrocatalytic active sites. Benefiting from the accessible Cu-Ni(III)dual active sites, high active surface area, good hydrophilic and aerophobic surface properties and superior electrical conductivity of the Cu mesh substrate, the as-prepared Cu-NiOOH/Cu2O/CM exhibits enhanced bifunctional electrocatalytic abilities for electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Particularly, for the Cu-NiOOH/Cu2O/CM||Cu-NiOOH/Cu2O/CM configuration toward the UOR||HER coupled system, a significantly reduced cell voltage of 1.43 V vs. RHE @ 10 mA·cm−2was obtained. The observed cell voltage for the conventional overall water splitting is approximately 190 mV higher than that observed for overall urea splitting. This study proposes a viable approach to achieve and optimize the bifunctional UOR/HER performance of NiOOH active species, which holds significant importance for efficient and stable hydrogen generation from urea-contaminated substandard water.

The authors describe an electrochemical immunoassay for ultrasensitive direct determination of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). A nanocomposite consisting of octahedral Cu2O nanocrystals covered with gold nanoparticles was utilized to modify a glassy carbon electrode which gives a strongly enhanced chronoamperometric signal for H 2 O 2 which is used as an electrochemical probe. The morphology and elemental composition of the the nanocomposite was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In addition, staphylococcal protein A was placed on the electrode for efficient capture of antibody to further enhance the sensitivity of the assay. Under optimal conditions and at a typical working voltage of −0.4 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the response covers the 2 pg·mL −1 to 20 ng·mL −1 CEA concentration range with a 200 fg·mL −1 lower detection limit. The method was successfully applied to the determination of CEA in (spiked) human serum.
