Solid phase microextraction (SPME) Arrows with enlarged sorption phases and Arrow-shaped tips are good alternatives to classic SPME fibers. Developing SPME Arrows with functionalized coatings has become a growing area of SPME research. In this study, a zirconium metal organic framework/molybdenum disulfide (UiO-66/MoS 2 ) composite coating modified SPME Arrow was developed and coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the headspace extraction and detection of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The coating preparation can be easily manipulated by the assembly strategy using silicone gels to adhere UiO-66/MoS 2 powder onto the surface of the Arrows. The prepared UiO-66/MoS 2 coated SPME Arrows exhibited clearly enhanced adsorption capacity (2.1–4.5 folds) and an improved degree of affinity to PAHs species when compared to commercial PDMS/CARS/DVB SPME Arrows or fibers. The improved mechanism may be due to the high specific area, hierarchical micropores and mesopores, and the largely increased and immobilized amount of UiO-66/MoS 2 coating on the stainless-steel Arrow. Under optimized conditions, the SPME Arrow-based assay was successfully applied to determine PAH levels in fish samples with satisfactory recoveries of 80.2–101% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 6%. The detection limits of PAHs were between 0.11–1.40 ng kg −1 . The coating showed satisfied reproducibility and repeatability (RSD <8.6%) with only 10 mL of 10% (v/v) acetone in water used as the extraction phase in an effort to be environmentally friendly. All of the results showed that the method is simple, sensitive, and robust. SPME Arrows with UiO-66/MoS 2 coatings can provide new opportunities for the efficient extraction of persistent organic pollutants in food safety applications.

This study aimed to gain a better understanding of the long-chain (≥C 20 ) polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) biosynthetic metabolism, with a specific focus on the metabolic fate of linolenic acid (18:3n-3, LNA) and linoleic acid (18:2n-6, LA) and the relationship between these two substrates in the process of LC-PUFA biosynthesis in juvenile Nile tilapia , Oreochromis niloticus . Fish were fed four isoproteic (37.5%) and isolipidic (6.2%) diets formulated with fixed levels of LA (0.60%) and gradual levels of LNA (0.10, 0.63, 1.56 and 2.04% of dry weight, respectively) for 10 weeks. The whole-body fatty acid balance method was used to evaluate fish in vivo fatty acid metabolism . The results showed that most of dietary LNA was bioconverted to LC-PUFA when tilapia receiving not enough LNA for optimal growth. In contrast, when fish receiving sufficient dietary LNA, most of the LNA was β-oxidized, with only <10% LNA being bioconverted. The in vivo apparent △-5/-6 desaturase and elongase activities on n-3 and n-6 PUFA, respectively, exhibited a significant linear increase and decrease with the increasing dietary LNA levels, clearly indicating that for all of the enzyme activities , n-3 PUFA is a preferred substrate and the LC-PUFA biosynthetic pathway is substrate limited in Nile tilapia. Dietary higher inclusion of LNA could block or at least slow down n-6 LC-PUFA biosynthesis from LA, indicating that a direct substrate competition for accessing the Δ-6 desaturase and elongase exists between these two substrates. Furthermore, Nile tilapia were relatively efficient in bioconversion from LNA to DHA, and the DHA biosynthesis from EPA may be more direct or faster than the production of EPA from LNA. Despite of the active bioconversion of LNA up to DHA, this metabolic effort was still insufficient to compensate for the significant reduced dietary intake of n-3 LC-PUFA. No significant difference was observed in the gene expression of fatty acyl desaturase ( fads2 ) and fatty acid elongase ( elovl5 ) among all groups, which suggests that the total in vivo apparent enzyme activities are directly and positively affected by substrate availability rather than the extent of the enzyme gene expression.

High-performance flexible semiconductor material can be used as an excellent multifunctional matrix for in-situ ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection and synchronous photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic residues in aquatic ecosystem. Here, a calcium-doped TiO 2 flexible matrix with double defects (surface oxygen vacancy defect and Ti 3+ energy level defect) was developed by its “in-situ one-step” hydrothermal synthesis on cotton fabric for the above purposes. Due to the joint contribution of double defects, a multi-channel charge transfer mode and a high-efficiency carrier separation are achieved, which endows flexible cotton fabric/Ca-doped TiO 2 (Cot/Ca-TiO 2 ) substrate with the greatly boosted SERS effect for in-situ detection of antibiotic residues on fish body surface and in fishpond water by a simple wiping or dipping sampling method, even for simultaneous identification of multi-component residues. The detection limits of three antibiotic residues (enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and enoxacin) are as low as 10 −9 M, which are far lower than the EU standard. More meaningfully, the flexible Cot/Ca-TiO 2 can be used as a multifunctional filter-membrane type photocatalyst for efficient on-site degradation of antibiotic residues in flowing fishpond water by a multi-grade photocatalysis means. Moreover, the flexible matrix exhibits good recyclability in both actual detection and photocatalysis.

In this study, we developed a miniaturized semi-automatic purification method based on pressure-filtration purification for sensitive HPLC-MS/MS monitoring of pesticides in aquatic products. For the first time, loofah sponge was demonstrated and utilized as a novel green, low-cost, and effective one-step purification adsorbent for fish sample. The developed method consisted of two main steps: first, target analytes were extracted from fish samples using an acetonitrile-based QuEChERS extraction method. Subsequently, the extract was automatically purified through a pressure-filtration purification column in a centrifuge, followed by HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Under optimized experimental conditions, the method exhibited excellent linearity, with a range of 1.0 to 50.0 μg/kg and a correlation coefficient > 0.99. The detection and quantification limits were 0.5 and 1–2 μg/kg, respectively. Recoveries at spiked levels of 2.0, 5.0 and 30.0 μg/kg ranged from 69.95 to 104.88 %, with intra-day RSDs ranging from 0.58 to 15.01 % and inter-day RSDs ranging from 0.72 % to 14.32 %.

Fresh shrimp, a protein-rich aquatic product, is prone to microbial spoilage during storage and transportation, posing risks to human health. Since spoilage degree cannot be identified by the naked eye, responsive smart packaging is urgently needed for real-time freshness monitoring of fresh shrimp. Herein, pH-responsive (copper sodium chlorophyllin-alizarin)/fish skin gelatin nanofiber-based hydrogel membranes were fabricated by embedding copper sodium chlorophyllin (CSC) and alizarin (ALI) in fish skin gelatin (FSG) substrate via electrospinning technology, followed by crosslinking via Maillard reaction and subsequent hydrogel formation through water absorption-swelling mechanism. Their structure, physical properties, pH-responsive behavior and application in fresh shrimp packaging were systematically investigated. The FAC-3 hydrogel membranes, embedded with 0.294 wt% CSC-ALI, exhibited a well-defined three-dimensional porous structure and a swelling rate of 434.93 ± 18.83%. The FAC-3 displayed distinct color changes under varying pH conditions, along with excellent sensitivity and color reversibility upon exposure to ammonia/acetic acid vapors. Comprehensive evaluations of the sensory quality, pH value, packaging membrane color changes, total colony count and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) of fresh shrimp demonstrated that FAC-3 exhibited outstanding indicative and monitoring performance for refrigerated shrimp. This work offers new insights for the development of aquatic product freshness-indicating packaging.

Cadmium, tin, mercury, and lead are four widespread metals in our environment from natural sources and human activities, and their toxic, metabolic, and bioavailable properties are chemical form-dependent. Considering large sample capacity in food, environmental and related fields, efficient, sensitive, inexpensive, and green methodologies are preferred for quantifying cadmium, tin, mercury, and lead compounds in an analytical trial. Herein we proposed a tetra-elemental method for simultaneous measurement of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds by interfacing high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The tetra-elemental method measured 12 metal compounds within 24 min in satisfactory precisions (<4.3 %) and low detection limits (0.022, 0.011–0.15, 0.016–0.028, and 0.013–0.021 μg L −1 for Cd(II), five tin compounds, three mercury compounds, and three lead compounds, respectively). By applying the proposed tetra-elemental speciation method to shrimp and fish, we found Cd(II) (0.043 mg kg −1 ) presented only in shrimp and methylmercury (0.8–4.6 μg kg −1 ) in both shrimp and fish with the absence of all targeted Sn and Pb compounds, which were far below the maximum limits by China GB 2762-2022. Overall, the proposed method offered significant advantages in analytical, economic and environmental aspects with good applicability to a wide range of food, environmental, and biological samples.

Eight key odorants identified in Zhoushan fish sauce via GC-MS, GC-E-nose, OAV, aroma recombination and omission tests. • Masking effects were predominant (17/28 pairs) among key odorant mixtures. • Synergism was observed specifically among structurally analogous compounds. In this study, the aroma profile of Zhoushan fish sauce and the perceptual interactions among its key odorants were characterized using Solid-Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS), Gas Chromatography-electronic-nose (GC-E-nose) and Feller's additive model. A total of 81 volatiles were identified, among which 15 compounds were determined as important odorants with odor activity value (OAV) greater than 1. Aroma recombination and omission experiments revealed that eight compounds made significant contributions ( p < 0.05) to the characteristic aroma including phenylacetaldehyde (392.31 μg/L), isovaleraldehyde (93.49 μg/L), nonanal (49.49 μg/L), 3-methylthiopropanal (0.93 μg/L), benzaldehyde (273.86 μg/L), 1-hexanol (20.82 μg/L), 2-methylbutanal (109.91 μg/L) and 1-octen-3-ol (126.35 μg/L). To elucidate the interaction mechanisms, 28 binary mixtures of these key odorants were evaluated using Feller's additive model. The results revealed a distinct structure-interaction relationship: Masking effects were predominant (17/28 pairs), particularly between compounds with dissimilar chemical structures, suggesting a competitive mechanism at the olfactory receptor level. Conversely, additive or synergistic effects were observed among structurally analogous compounds, likely due to cooperative receptor activation. The σ-τ plot and molecular docking results further support this conclusion. These findings provide a theoretical basis for understanding how Strecker aldehydes mask fishy off-odors, offering new insights for the precise flavor regulation of fermented seafood products.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of dietary tributyrin (TB) in the low fish meal (high- Clostridium autoethanogenum protein, CAP) diet on the growth, antioxidation, lipid metabolism and intestinal microbiota of largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ). For eight weeks, largemouth bass (15.05 ± 0.58 g) were fed on eight isonitrogenous and isolipid diets with graded levels of dietary TB (0 g/kg, 0.2 g/kg, 0.4 g/kg, 0.8 g/kg, 1.6 g/kg, 3.2 g/kg, 4.0 g/kg and 8.0 g/kg). The findings showed that the weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) were increased by 1.6 g/kg of dietary TB. The protein efficiency and deposition ratios were linearly affected by dietary TB. The broken-line model based on the WGR revealed that 1.617 g/kg of dietary TB was sufficient for optimal growth. The digestive enzyme activities and villus length of the intestine were increased by dietary TB (1.6 g/kg). Total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were significantly improved, and the malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PC) contents were significantly decreased after dietary TB. The expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 ( nrf2 ) and kelch like ech associated protein 1 ( keap1 ) in the liver and intestine were significantly increased and decreased by 1.6 g/kg of dietary TB, respectively. The mRNA levels of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase ( cuznsod ), cat , heme oxygenase-1 ( ho-1 ) and glutathione peroxidase ( gpx ) were significantly upregulated. Dietary TB could significantly affect the total protein (TP) and albumin (ALB) content in the serum. The aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities were the lowest at 1.6 g/kg of TB group. Besides, the hepatocyte vacuolation and nuclear translocation were alleviated after supplementation of 0.2‰− 3.0‰ of dietary TB. The total cholesterol (T-CHO), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) were significantly increased by dietary TB. The triglycerides (TG) content was decreased by dietary TB. The mRNA levels of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1-c ( srebp1-c ), acetyl-coa carboxylase alpha ( accα ), fatty acid synthase ( fasn ) and accβ in the liver were significantly downregulated, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha ( pparα ) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 ( cpt-1 ) were upregulated by 1.6 g/kg of dietary TB. Dietary TB had effects on the intestine microbes of largemouth bass. The Cetobacterium was present in the highest percentage and increased from 41% (0 g/kg TB) to 59% (1.6 g/kg TB). The Mycoplasmataceae was the second most predominant genus and decreased from 90% in the 0 g/kg of TB group to 10% in the 1.6 g/kg of TB group. In summary, the dietary TB could be supplemented in the CAP-based diet for better growth and antioxidation, lipid metabolism and intestinal microbiota of largemouth bass.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), one of the most potent neurotoxins, poses a significant threat to consumer health. This study presents an advanced analytical method combining ion-paired reagent-assisted dispersive solid-phase extraction (ion-paired-dSPE) with hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-MS/MS), for the quantification of TTX residues in puffer fish. Edible tissue samples were extracted twice using a 1 % formic acid–methanol solution and purified via optimized ion-paired-dSPE procedures. TTX adsorbed onto the magnetic nano-adsorbents was subsequently eluted with an acetonitrile–water–formic acid solution (60:40:1, v/v/v). Detection was achieved through electrospray ionization in positive mode, with quantification performed in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Correlation coefficients ( r ) in matrix-matched external standard curves ranged from 0.9995 to 0.9997. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) in puffer fish tissues were 0.1 μg/kg and 0.3 μg/kg, respectively. Spiked recoveries at three concentrations in negative tissue samples ranged from 73.4 % to 87.5 %, with precision under 10.6 %. The method was validated in accordance with 2002/657/EC guidelines and successfully applied to TTX detection in cultured puffer fish samples.

To address the ongoing issue of quinolones (QNs) residues in aquatic products, accurate and sensitive detection of trace QNs has always been necessary and urgent. In this work, a composite material of NH 2 −MIL-125(Ti)@TpBD(SO 3 H) 2 consisting of metal organic frameworks and based on bisulfonic acid-based covalent organic frameworks was synthesized and applied as a dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) adsorbent. Combining with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, a simple and effective method for simultaneous detection of 18 QNs in aquatic products was established. Meanwhile, the selective adsorption mechanism was thoroughly investigated through material characterization combined with density functional theory calculations. The results showed that the method had a good linear relationship ( r ≥ 0.9981), low limits of detection of 0.0019–0.0641 μg kg⁻¹, along with high recovery rates in the range of 80.6–113.2 %, and good precision with relative standard deviations less than 8.8 %. The selective adsorption mechanism revealed the synergistic adsorption mechanism of electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. The material had good reusability and excellent stability. In summary, the dSPE method based on NH 2 −MIL-125(Ti)@TpBD(SO 3 H) 2 composites provided a practical sample pretreatment solution for the determination of trace QNs in complex matrixes.

Water-soluble and biocompatible protein carbon dots (P-CDs) were prepared from egg white simply by the rapid one-step reaction of neutralization heat reaction. Unexpectedly, the so fabricated P-CDs could present the excitation-dependent tunable fluorescence that could be quenched specifically by Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions with obvious color changes. A high-throughput fluorimetric platform was thereby developed by coating the P-CDs onto the capillary array for detection of total iron ions in fish blood samples, with the linear concentration range of 0.25-60.00 μM and the detection limit of 0.085 μM. Moreover, it can allow for the fast evaluation of total iron ions in fish blood samples, showing the recovery efficiencies of 97.25%-99.84%. Such a facile fabrication route for P-CDs from egg white by the rapid neutralization reaction may open a new door for preparing different CDs. More importantly, the developed fluorimetric method may be expected for the wide applications in the fields of diagnosis of iron-relative diseases, monitoring of environmental water, and ensuring of aquatic product safety.

This work developed functional, high-temperature-resistant CF/epoxy composites using compression molding by sequentially grafting graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the surface of carbon fibers (CF) via thiol-ene click chemistry, creating a bioinspired fish-scale structure with varying thicknesses. At 180 °C, the CF-(GO-CNTs) 2 composites exhibited increases in IFSS, ILSS, flexural strength, and modulus by 182.7 %, 73.1 %, 240.6 %, and 404.0 %, respectively, compared to commercial CF composites. These enhancements were ascribed to considerable improvements in the chemical interactions and entanglement between the CF and matrix, which resulted from the incorporation of GO and CNTs. Moreover, they possessed strong carbon–carbon bonds and inherent high-temperature structural stability. Remarkably, the electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity increased by 383.3 % and 227.9 %, respectively. At 9.6 GHz, the CF-(GO-CNTs) 3 composite achieved an SE T value of up to 30.8 dB. This was mainly because the modified GO and CNTs, when combined with epoxy resin to form composites, provided abundant interface polarization centers and carrier availability. The interfacial enhancement mechanisms and electromagnetic shielding mechanisms of the modified CF composites were investigated. This work offered a new strategy for developing high-temperature-resistant CF composites with functional properties.
