Searching photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen production has been a challenging issue for solar-energy harvesting. Using co-catalyst is proven to be an effective approach to improve the efficiency of photocatalyst in water-splitting. Here, we report that carbonized MoS2 (MoS2/Mo2C) can be a superactive co-catalyst in solar-driven hydrogen production. We show that MoS2/Mo2C decorated CdS achieves a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (34 mmol/h/g, ∼112 times higher than pure CdS) and excellent apparent quantum efficiency (41.4% at 420 nm). The outstanding photocatalytic performance of MoS2/Mo2C/CdS is attributed to the metallic characteristic of MoS2/Mo2C and suitable Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption, leading to enhanced light absorption, fast separation and transportation of photoinduced carriers, and optimal activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We further show that MoS2/Mo2C as co-catalyst can also dramatically improve the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. Our findings demonstrate that the carbonized transition metal disulfide can be active as co-catalyst in photocatalysis, providing guidance on exploring novel photocatalysts for energy harvesting.

To enhance the anticorrosive and mechanical performances of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in epoxy (EP) coatings, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) and γ- (2, 3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) have been combined for inner reinforcement and outer surface modification based on CNFs . The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, tensile testing and microhardness testing demonstrated that MoS 2 -CNFs (0.8%) composite can prominently enhance the anticorrosive and mechanical performance of the EP coating. Furthermore, the impedance of EP/MoS 2 -CNFs (0.8%) was higher than that of the pure EP and other composite coatings, and the Young’s modulus (EY) and tensile strength (σs) of EP/MoS 2 -CNFs (0.8%) were increased by 65.4% and 56.6%, respectively.

This study established a facile one-step strategy to anchor MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles on the surface of MoS 2 nanosheets in a controlled manner. The as-prepared MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 nanocomposites were investigated by TEM, XRD, XPS, Raman, BET and VSM in detail. The MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles with an average particle size of 26 nm were densely and uniformly decorated on MoS 2 nanosheets, and consequently, both the aggregation of MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles and restacking of MoS 2 nanosheets were effectively prevented. More importantly, the MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 nanocomposites exhibited high specific surface area, typical superparamagnetic behavior and excellent solution dispersion, showing a great potential for biomedical applications in the fields of magnetic resonance imaging, targeted drug delivery and tumor hyperthermia.

A novel adsorbent for enrichment of trace uranium (U(VI)) ions in aqueous solution is designed based on the excellent adsorption capacity of poly(amidoxime) (PAO) and the excellent chemical properties of MoS 2 . Specifically, PAO/MoS 2 is prepared by plasma induced polymerization of acrylonitrile on MoS 2 surfaces, followed by amidoximation treatment with NH 2 OH. This as-prepared PAO/MoS 2 was applied as adsorbent for the separation of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The modified PAO enhance greatly the adsorption capability of MoS 2 for U(VI) in aqueous solutions. PAO/MoS 2 presents excellent selectivity for U(VI) in aqueous solution, suggesting PAO/MoS 2 can separate U(VI) with high selectivity.

A ratiometric fluorescence method is described for the determination of the anticancer drug 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). The method is based on the use of fluorescent MoS 2 quantum dots (MQDs) and of the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In the absence of 6-MP, HRP catalyzes the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) by H 2 O 2 to form 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). This leads to quenching of the violet fluorescence of MQDs (measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 360/415 nm), while the strong yellow fluorescence of DAP (peaking at 560 nm) becomes increasingly strong. In the presence of 6-MP, however, it will be preferentially oxidized by the HRP/H 2 O 2 system to form a disulfide dimer. Hence, less H 2 O 2 is available for the oxidation of OPD and less DAP will be formed. This results in the recovery of the violet fluorescence and a decrease of the yellow fluorescence. The ratio of the two signals can be used to quantify either H 2 O 2 or 6-MP. Linear responses are observed for H 2 O 2 in 0.5–140 μM concentration range, and for 6-MP in the 0.5–70 μM concentration range, with detection limits of 0.1 μM and 0.29 μM, respectively. The method was applied to the determination of 6-MP in spiked human urine and gave satisfactory results.
Schematic of an enzymatic fluorometric method for determination of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). It is based on the presence of 6-MP that can inhibit the HRP-catalyzed oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to form 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). Hence, the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between DAP and MoS 2 quantum dots (MQDs) is suppressed.

Electrocatalytic NH 3 production from N 2 is of great importance to lower global energy consumption and achieve a greener ammonium industry. A rationally designed AuNPs@MoS 2 was synthesized based on previous findings. The experimental condition of the growth of AuNPs on MoS 2 caused the interlayer of MoS 2 change from 0.95 nm to 0.665 nm. This as-prepared AuNPs@MoS 2 showed excellent electrocatalytic activity in acidic, neutral and basic conditions. The optimal NRR electrode potential was found to be −0.3 V vs. RHE for all pH conditions. Among them, NRR in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 showed the highest faradaic efficiency of 9.7%, and the highest average NH 3 yield rate (25 μg h −1 mg −1 cat ) in 0.1 M KOH. Besides, AuNPs@MoS 2 displayed tremendous stability in all pH conditions, thanks to its ultra-stable crystal structure and strong dispersibility of AuNPs due to Au–S bond. Therefore, it can be an excellent candidate for mass production of NH 3 in electrocatalytic approaches.

Graphical Seeing red : Benefitting from the controllable interplanar spacing of MoS 2 and the high theoretical capacity provided by red phosphorus (RP) particles, the mosaic RP/MoS 2 (2 : 1) hybrid synthesized by a simple ball-milling approach delivers impressive electrochemical performance for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs). This study provides a new insight into developing the rational design of novel anode alternatives for KIBs. Low-cost, non-toxic, and abundant red phosphorus (RP) with high gravimetric discharge/charge capacity has been recognized as a promising anode candidate for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs). However, the large volumetric change, severe agglomeration, and rapid capacity attenuation during discharge/charge cycles are major obstacles for practical applications in potassium-ion storage. In order to eliminate such intrinsic deficiencies, a mosaic RP/MoS 2 hybrid is designed and prepared by using a simple ball-milling method and subsequently used as an anode for KIBs. The hybrid with a certain ratio of 2 : 1 can achieve a sustainable K + storage capability (246.6/239.6 mAh g −1 for 100 cycles at 50 mA g −1 ), considerable long-cycle performance (120.5/118.0 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 after 500 cycles), and good rate capability. The cycling performance is attributed to a pseudocapacitive effect, controllable interlayer spacing of MoS 2 , and enhanced conductivity. In view of the scalable synthesis process and considerable cycling durability, the RP/MoS 2 hybrid may shed light on the rational design of novel anode alternatives for KIBs.

N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) has been widely used as a solvent for preparing two-dimensional quantum dots (2D-QDs) by probe sonication . Here we found that carbon dots (CDs) are simultaneously produced by the carbonization of NMP when preparing MoS 2 QDs in a NMP solvent by probe sonication. These two kinds of QDs are similar in color, crystal structure, excitation wavelength dependent photoluminescence (PL), and have overlaps in their absorption spectra and coincidence of PL peaks. As a result, the co-production of CDs has not previously been recognized. The CDs show strong optical interactions with the MoS 2 QDs, which leads to a dramatic decrease in the fluorescence intensity of the CDs/MoS 2 QDs. Moreover, we found that the carbonization also occurs for the commonly used organic solvents . These findings suggest that associated production of CDs should be considered when preparing 2D-QDs by probe sonication, and the resulting hybrid CDs/2D-QDs will provide opportunities to design their properties and uses.

Inorganic nanofiltration membranes with high flux are urgently needed in water purification processes. Herein, polydopamine (PDA)-modified layer-stacked molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) were fabricated via a pressure-assisted self-assembly process. The separation performance of the as-prepared membranes with various MoS2 loadings at different dopamine polymerization times was evaluated. The pure water permeance of PDA-modified MoS2 NFMs, with MoS2 loading of 0.1103 mg/cm2 at 4 h modification, could reach 135.3 LMH/bar. The rejection toward methylene blue could reach 100% with molecular weight cutoff approximately 671 Da and a high permeability of salts. Furthermore, the resultant membrane also exhibited a satisfactory long-term stability toward dye solution and antifouling property toward bovine serum albumin. This work may give inspiration to the development of inorganic membranes with high performance, especially high pure water permeance, for water-related processes.

Integrating heterogeneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts into compatible composite catalysts with specific interfaces and structures holds great promise for the development of efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting. Herein, heterogeneous MoS 2 -Ni(OH) 2 catalyst supported by Ni foam (MoS 2 @Ni(OH) 2 /NF) is developed, in which the Ni(OH) 2 nanorod array is grafted with MoS 2 nanosheets . The hierarchical 1D/2D structures benefit not only the exposure of catalytic site but also the facilitated charge transfer. The heterointerfaces allow the synergism of electric structure modulation for improved catalytic activity and kinetics towards HER, OER, and overall water splitting. MoS 2 @Ni(OH) 2 /NF achieves a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 134 and 233 mV for HER and OER in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, a cell voltage as low as 1.46 V is obtained to afford 10 mA cm −2 in a tow-electrode electrolyzer using MoS 2 @Ni(OH) 2 /NF as bifunctional catalysts, assuring it superior to most of the reported noble-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts. Such heterogeneous design of composite catalyst should shed light on the exploration of functional materials for energy applications.

The intercalation strategy has become crucial for 2D layered materials to achieve desirable properties, however, the intercalated guests are often limited to metal ions or small molecules. Here, we develop a simple, mild and efficient polymer-direct-intercalation strategy that different polymers (polyethyleneimine and polyethylene glycol) can directly intercalate into the MoS 2 interlayers, forming MoS 2 -polymer composites and interlayer-expanded MoS 2 /carbon heteroaerogels after carbonization. The polymer-direct-intercalation behavior has been investigated by substantial characterizations and molecular dynamic calculations. The resulting composite heteroaerogels possess 3D conductive MoS 2 /C frameworks, expanded MoS 2 interlayers (0.98 nm), high MoS 2 contents (up to 74%) and high Mo valence (+6), beneficial to fast and stable charge transport and enhanced pseudocapacitive energy storage. Consequently, the typical MoS 2 /N-doped carbon heteroaerogels exhibit outstanding supercapacitor performance, such as ultrahigh capacitance, remarkable rate capability and excellent cycling stability. This study offers a new intercalation strategy which may be generally applicable to 2D materials for promising energy applications.

Highly defective molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets of 1T phase are synthesized on a three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide (3D RGO) network through a one-pot hydrothermal method . By switching the reaction time, the resulting MoS 2 's phases (1T or 2H) and defect-density are successfully controlled. Reducing the reaction time from 20 to 6 h increases the defect-density and induces a phase transition from hybrid 2H/1T to 1T phase. High defect-density coupled with high 1T-phase portion in MoS 2 nanosheets/RGO heterostructures enhances the electrochemical performance for supercapacitor application by inducing additional active sites, which provide fast charge transfer rate and a large number of ion diffusion channels. Among all samples, the defect rich 1T-phase MoS 2 nanosheets/RGO heterostructure synthesized in 6 h (M/RGO-6) gives an outstanding specific capacitance of 442.0 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . The M/RGO-6 also exhibits excellent cycling stability with capacitance retention of 90.3% over 1000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . These make M/RGO-6 attractive to the electrode of high-performance supercapacitors .
