Separating water-in-heavy oil (W/HO) emulsions at low (room) temperature is challenging when exploiting heavy oil. We propose an adaptable strategy for constructing Si/O-doped demulsifiers. A nonionic demulsifier (APBMP) has been synthesized based on polysiloxane modified by allyl polyether and butyl acrylate. APBMP achieves 95.97% dehydration within 5 min for W/HO emulsions at 288.15 K and complete dehydration in 15 min at 323.15 K. Mechanistic studies found that doping Si/O into the demulsifier molecules increases the number of hydrogen bond sites, which enables the demulsifiers to quickly disperse natural stabilizers (e.g., asphaltenes) and replace them at the oil–water interfacial film. The demulsifiers prefer to occupy the interfacial sites rather than dissolve into the bulk oil or water phases. Driven by hydrogen-bond-dominated noncovalent interactions, the oil–water interfacial film is softened, reconstructed, and broken. These findings provide insights into developing novel materials for oil–water separations in a low-carbon way.

This study employed a wet impregnation method to synthesize five types of Cu/HZSM-5 adsorbents with Si/Al ratios of 25, 50, 85, 200, and 300, used for the removal of H 2 S in low-temperature, low-oxygen environments. The impact of different Si/Al ratios on the adsorption oxidative performance of Cu 30 /HZSM-5–85 adsorbents was investigated. According to the performance test results, Cu 30 /HZSM-5–85 exhibited the highest breakthrough capacity, reaching 231.75 mg H 2 S/g sorbent . Cu/HZSM-5 sorbent maintains a strong ability to remove H 2 S even under humid conditions and shows excellent water resistance. XRD , BET, and XPS results revealed that CuO is the primary active species, with Cu 30 /HZSM-5–85 having the largest surface area and highest CuO content, providing more active sites for H 2 S adsorption. H 2 -TPR and O 2 -TPD results confirmed that Cu 30 /HZSM-5–85 sorbent exhibits outstanding redox properties and oxygen storage capacity, contributing to excellent oxygen transferability in the molecular sieve adsorption-oxidation process. With notable characteristics such as a large surface area, high desulfurization efficiency, and water resistance, Cu 30 /HZSM-5–85 sorbents hold significant importance for industrial applications.

With the potential application of biomass-derived feedstock upgradation to sustainable aviation fuels, it is essential to enhance the hydroisomerization performance of ZSM-22 zeolite while improving its resistance to residual oxygen-containing compounds. As the defect sites in the ZSM-22 zeolite, the abundant Si-OH groups are closely related to the catalytic performance and stability, serving as the main attack sites for the generated water. In this work, liquid-mediated defect-healing treatment is performed to heal Si-OH to Si-O-Si, leading to the enhancement of the crystallinity and pore connectivity without affecting the Si/Al, micropore volume, and morphology and preventing the micropores blockage and dealumination caused by conventional silylation and silication procedures. The outcome of the declined Si-OH groups is the reduction of the Lewis acid site without altering the Brønsted acidity. In the n-dodecane hydroisomerization, the catalyst obtained by the liquid-mediated defect-healing treatment route shows an increased conversion and isomer yield compared to the parent and healed catalysts prepared by other healing methods. This is mainly due to enhanced confinement of the micropore void, resulting in decreased apparent activation energy and reduced yield to multi-branched isomers prone to cracking. Furthermore, the healed catalyst exhibits improved resistance and structure stability in the hydroisomerization of feedstocks containing butanol. The work provides a prospective application of ZSM-22 zeolite in the hydroisomerization for complex and severe reactants through the essential Si-OH healing method.

Therefore, fast, portable and low-cost sensors are required to detect FIP in environmental and food samples. Here, an electrochemical sensor was successfully developed by using Si-69-β-CD and N-rGO modified a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the detection of FIP. The novel Si-69-β-CD composite was prepared by a facile hydrothermal method was subjected to Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers (EDS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for morphological and structural confirmation. Results: The electrochemical properties of β-CD were improved by grafting Si-69 as estimated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrochemical studies demonstrated that the developed Si-69-β-CD/N-rGO/GCE sensor exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for FIP. In addition, under optimized experimental conditions, the Si-69-β-CD/N-rGO/GCE sensor for FIP was shown a wide linear range of 0.01–20 µmol/L and the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0023 µmol/L. The usefulness of the sensor for the detection of FIP in egg samples was also investigated. Significance: Our study is valueable to the analytical methodology for measurements of Fiproni with a novel method that is robust and sensitive than others. Our current study showed sufficient sensitivity and accuracy and thus is suitable for future application in measuring contaminants in environmental and food samples.

Silicon (Si) is considered a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity of up to 4200 mAh/g. However, the poor cycling and rate performances of Si induced by the low intrinsic electronic conductivity and large volume expansion during the lithiation/delithiation process limit its practical application. Herein, a novel silicon/bismuth@nitrogen-doped carbon (Si/Bi@NC) composite with nanovoids was synthesized and investigated as an advanced anode material for LIBs. In such a structure, ultrafine bismuth nanoparticles coupled with an N -doped carbon layer were introduced to modify the surface of Si nanoparticles . Subsequently, the lithiated Li x Bi has excellent high ionic conductivity and acts as a fast transport bridge for lithium ions . The introduced carbon coating layer and nanovoids can buffer the volume expansion of Si during the lithiation/delithiation process, thus maintaining structural stability during the cycling process. As a result, the Si/Bi@NC composite exhibits excellent electrochemical performance , providing a relatively high capacity of 955.8 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g after 450 cycles and excellent rate performance with a high capacity of 477.8 mAh/g even at 10.0 A/g. Furthermore, the assembled full cell with LiFePO 4 as cathode and pre-lithium Si/Bi@NC as anode can provide a high capacity of 138.8 mAh/g at 1C after 90 cycles, exhibiting outstanding cycling performance.

Li 2 O–ZnO–B 2 O 3 -WO 3 (LZBW) sealing glasses for Si substrates were prepared and the effect of WO 3 on the structure, thermal properties, and sintering behaviour was investigated. As the WO 3 increases from 0 to 12 mol%, the glass transition temperature and softening temperature reach the lowest values of 448 °C and 479 °C, respectively, at which time the glass network has the lowest degree of polymerization. The thermal expansion coefficient increases from 6.959 × 10 −6 /°C to 8.476 × 10 −6 /°C with increasing WO 3 contents. It is verified that the introduction of WO 3 can effectively improve the conductivity. The sealing property of the glasses was evaluated by the wetting angle of the glasses after co-sintering with Si substrate for 10 min at 860 °C, and the 25Li 2 O-7ZnO-2.7Bi 2 O 3 -1.3P 2 O 5 -55B 2 O 3 -9WO 3 glass had the minimum wetting angle of 34.07°. The excellent thermal properties, conductivity, and wetting behaviour of the LZBW glasses make it a potential material as a binder material for positive silver pastes.

Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is a promising technology for removing sulfur compounds from fuel oil under mild conditions. This study prepared Ti/MCM-41 catalyst using a simple adsorption-hydrolysis-argon calcination method and applied it to ODS. Carbon introduced by tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT) and generated by calcination in inert atmosphere restrains the growth of TiO 2 , thereby promoting the formation of a high-activity Si-O-Ti structure. By using the optimal Ti/MCM-41 catalyst, desulfurization rate of model oil (dibenzothiophene dissolved in decalin, 500 ppm of sulfur) as high as 99.8 % was achieved at 40 °C with methanol as extractant and H 2 O 2 as oxidant (O/S = 4). After six recycles, the S removal rate was still 97.9 %. Reaction conditions like reaction temperature and extractant were carefully analyzed to explore the active structure and reaction mechanism, deducing that Si-O-Ti species promote the reaction probably by forming highly active bis-hydroperoxo Ti species with five-membered ring structure. Moreover, the promotion of methanol effect was found and reasonably explained. This work provides important guidance to the design of new catalysts, selection of extractant and optimization of oxidant for more efficient phase-transfer extractive and catalytic oxidation desulfurization (ECODS) process.

A unique core–shell structured pitch-pyrolyzed carbon-coated porous Si/SiO x /needle coke (Si/SiO x / NC@C) nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized via a low-temperature aluminothermic reduction combined with a scalable spray-drying and following carbonization processes. The fabrication of silicon-based materials in Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites derived from high silica-containing silica fume powders enables effective utilization of industrial solid waste. The Si/SiO x nanoparticles in Si/SiO x /NC@C with abundant internal nanovoids are anchored on the surface of needle coke matrices, forming Si/SiO x -needle coke dual-phase cores, which are wrapped by a thin pitch-pyrolyzed amorphous carbon layer. The synergetic combination of these inherent advantages, such as high electroconductivity, porosity, amorphous/crystalline mixture structure, and high-valence SiO x residues, remarkably enhances the composite’s structural stability and buffers internal structure stress induced by alloying/dealloying of Si. The Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites demonstrate exceptional electrochemical stability, exhibiting a specific reversible capacity of 771.5 mAh g⁻ 1 with minimal capacity decay (~ 0.06% per cycle) over 500 cyclic repetitions at an elevated current density of 200 mA g⁻ 1 . Rate capability tests show that the Si/SiO x /NC@C nanocomposites achieve a high capacity of 660.25 mAh g −1 even when subjected to the highest current of 3200 mA g −1 . More notably, this work provides a facile and promising economical route for the scalable industrial production of high-performance Si-needle coke anode materials for future LIBs from industrial solid waste.

Although high-capacity silicon/carbon (Si/C) composites are widely recognized as the most promising alternative to commercial graphite anodes for next-generation high-energy lithium–ion batteries (LIBs), their practical implementation faces significant challenges due to structural and interfacial instability caused by the substantial volume expansion of Si during charge–discharge cycles. Developing cost-effective binders with superior bonding strength and excellent interfacial compatibility for multicomponent Si/C electrodes is crucial to overcoming these limitations. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a linear copolymer binder (HAMN) incorporating four distinct functional units through a facile one-pot aqueous radical polymerization method. This innovative binder demonstrates multiple advantages, including cost efficiency, exceptional water solubility, superior slurry rheology, remarkable mechanical flexibility, and strong interfacial affinity for Si/C composites. The HAMN-based Si/C electrode exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance, maintaining 91.24% capacity retention after 600 cycles at 0.5C in a half-cell configuration. More importantly, in practical 18,650 cylindrical full-cell tests, the battery demonstrates impressive cycling stability with capacity retention rates of 86.2% after 400 cycles at 0.5C and 78.84% after 700 cycles at 1C. These compelling results underscore the tremendous potential of the HAMN binder in enabling the practical application of high-energy Si/C composite anodes for advanced LIBs.

The alkali method has been proven to be an effective approach for lithium (Li) and rubidium (Rb) extraction; however, the significant dissolution of silicon (Si) remains a challenging issue. A high Si concentration in the leachate can cause filtration difficulties and pipeline blockages, while also negatively affecting phase separation during the subsequent extraction of Rb. Additionally, since the leachate needs to be recycled, the removal of Si from the leach liquor is essential. This study introduces an innovative approach of adding Al(OH) 3 for Si removal during the alkali leaching of lithium concentrate. Preliminary single-factor experiments demonstrate that Al(OH) 3 effectively reduces the Si concentration in leach liquor but also consumes NaOH, leading to a decline in Li and Rb leaching efficiency. Given the interaction between Al(OH) 3 addition and NaOH concentration on element leaching, Response Surface Methodology was employed to predict and optimize the parameters of the leaching process. Under the optimal parameters of 290 g/L NaOH concentration, 39 % Al(OH) 3 addition, and 120 °C leaching temperature, the experimental leaching efficiencies of Li, Rb, and Si were 99.8 %, 87.9 %, and 4.1 %, respectively. Subsequently, Rb was separated with Li via solvent extraction under high alkaline conditions. The single-stage extraction efficiency of Rb was 82.8 % at optimized conditions, and after four-stage countercurrent extraction, the overall Rb recovery could reach 99.2 %. The innovative alkali method proposed not only enables the synergistic extraction and separation of Li and Rb but also achieves effective Si removal and its utilization.

The study investigated the hydrothermal corrosion behavior of Y 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (YAS) and CaO-Y 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CYAS) glass interlayers in SiC/SiC composite joints under simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) conditions and evaluated their effects on mechanical performance. The corrosion rate of the YAS joint was ∼2.7 mg/(cm 2 ·day), primarily due to the rapid dissolution of SiO 2 , which triggered pitting corrosion and void formation. While the Y 2 Si 2 O 7 exhibited good stability, degradation of the glass network caused the hydrolysis of Al species, forming stable AlO(OH) corrosion products. These processes severely damaged the structural integrity, reducing shear strength to ∼6 ± 2 MPa after 15 days, making it unsuitable for application. In contrast, the CYAS joint showed superior corrosion resistance, with a corrosion rate of ∼0.16 mg/(cm 2 ·day), only 2.2% of the YAS joint. The CYAS joint maintained structural integrity and interface bonding. During corrosion, Y 2 Si 2 O 7 crystals formed, while a layer of corrosion intermediates covered and eventually transformed into AlO(OH) particles. After 25 days, shear strength remained at 26 ± 2 MPa, still satisfying service requirements. The hydrothermal corrosion mechanism of YAS-based glasses basically involved the breakdown of the glass network and formation of stable products, including Y 2 Si 2 O 7 and AlO(OH).

In this work, a novel dual-channel sensing mode, i.e., UV-induced surface photovoltage (SPV) and photoluminescence (PL) on n-type Si/TiO2/Eu3+-doped TiO2 (n-Si/TiO2/TiO2:Eu), was demonstrated for the discrimination of 20 volatile compounds. The SPV signaling in this work employed a laboratory-constructed microvoltammeter with good analytical performances. This device also features wireless communication, portability, along with low cost and power consumption. The SPV and PL pattern of each analyte was distinct, and the hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) result showed that these 20 volatile species were distinguishable, even for structural isomers. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) further demonstrated the robustness of this sensor: 180 unknown samples from three groups at concentrations of 15.3, 31.7, and 79.2 mg/L were classified with accuracies of 96.7%, 95.0%, and 100%, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that SPV and PL channels contributed equally to the good discrimination ability due to two distinct sensing mechanisms. This dual-channel sensor was also successfully applied in the discrimination of beverage samples such as liquor, wine, and vinegar.
