In this study, UiO-66(Zr) and its derivative (UiO-66-C) are employed as supports to prepare shape stabilized PCM (U/SA-X and UC /SA-X) for resolving the melting leakage and poor thermal conductivity of stearic acid (SA). Thermal storage performance, including phase change enthalpy, supercooling degree, phase change temperature, thermal conductivity, and shape stability of U/SA-X and UC/SA-X, are compared. Preliminary characterization reveals that the physicochemical property evolution of the support impacts the thermal storage performance of SA . UiO-66 with microporous structure is unfavorable to enhance the shape stability of SA. U/SA-X exhibits low thermal storage efficiency and high supercooling degree owing to nanoconfinement and hydrogen bonding. By contrast, UiO-66-C possesses mesopores and graphitic structure that allows for a remarkable thermal storage performance of UC/SA-X. In detail, UC/SA-50 exhibits an ideal thermal storage performance, where the thermal conductivity (0.531 W/(m·K)) increases by 141 % in comparison to SA with a high phase change enthalpy of 93.6 J/g and low supercooling degree of 0.24 °C. It also shows satisfying thermal reliability that the thermal property of UC/SA-50 maintains stability even after 100 thermal cycles. In addition, the photothermal conversion efficiency of UC/SA-50 is up to 83.06 %.

The phenomenon of rapid migration of photogenerated charges in natural photosynthetic systems has motivated the design of efficient photocatalysts capable of fast charge separation and efficient reaction kinetics for photocatalytically assisted enrichment and separation of uranium U(VI) in uranium wastewater. In this study, we developed a biomimetic photocatalytic system MnOx/NH2-UiO-66-rGO (M/UiO-rGO) with spatially separated dual cocatalysts. Among them, rGO functions to capture electrons and participates in reduction reactions, while MnOx captures holes and participates in oxidation reactions. The M/UiO-rGO catalyst exhibits excellent performance in photocatalytic reduction of uranium (reaching 91.8% in 1 h), and even under natural light conditions, it exhibits excellent uranium removal ability (80.4%). Using multispectral coupling technology, we further confirmed that enriched uranium undergoes a continuous and complex reaction process of “capture-reduction-free radical oxidation–nucleation–crystallization”. This work presents a viable strategy for designing biomimetic photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and rapid reaction kinetics for environmental purification purposes.

Due to the toxicity and corrosiveness of the ammonia gas, low-cost, portable, and accurate methods of ammonia detection are of great importance in environmental testing and disease diagnosis. In this study, flower-like UIO-66-NH 2 @MoS 2 composite modified screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) were prepared by hydrothermal treatment using ionic liquids [BMIM][BF 4 ] as electrolytes. The UIO-66-NH 2 @MoS 2 /SPEs were then combined with a miniature electrochemical workstation to construct a novel electrochemical ammonia sensor. The experimental results showed that UIO-66-NH 2 @MoS 2 had excellent adsorption capacity for ammonia, exhibiting good linearity in the range of 5–500 ppm with a low limit of detection (2.1 ppm) and a fast response time for 100 ppm ammonia (13 s). This sensor also possessed excellent stability, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability. The synthesized UIO-66-NH 2 @MoS 2 nanocomposite was demonstrated to be an excellent candidate for the construction of high-performance ammonia sensors for various applications.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a powerful tool for early warning of infectious disease outbreaks. Hence, a rapid and portable pathogen monitoring system is urgent needed for on-site detection. In this work, we first reported synthesis of an artificial modulated wide-spectrum bacteria capture nanoparticle (Arg-CSP@UiO@Fe 3 O 4 ). Arginine-modified phosphorylated chitosan (Arg-CSP) coating could provide strongly positive charged guanidinium group for pathogen interaction by electrostatic attraction, and UiO-66-NH 2 layer could help Arg-CSP graft onto Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles. The capture efficiency of Arg-CSP@UiO@Fe 3 O 4 reached 92.2 % and 97.3 % for Escherichia coli ( E.coli ) and Staphylococcus epidermidis ( S.epidermidis )within 40 min, in 10 mL sample. To prevent pathogen degradation in sewage, a portable nucleic acid extraction-free method was also developed. UiO-66-NH 2 could disintegrate in buffer with high concentration of PO 4 3− for bacterium desorption, and then nucleic acid of the bacteria was released by heating. The DNA template concentration obtained by this method was 779.28 times higher than that of the direct thermal lysis product and 8.63 times higher than that of the commercial kit. Afterwards, multiple detection of bacteria was realized by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Artificial regulated pathogen desorption could prevent non-specific adsorption of nucleic acid by nanoparticles. The detection limit of Arg-CSP@UiO@Fe 3 O 4 -LAMP method was 80 cfu/mL for E.coli and 300 cfu/mL for S.epidermidis . The accuracy and reliability of the method was validated by spiked sewage samples. In conclusion, this bio-monitoring system was able to detect multiple bacteria in environment conveniently and have good potential to become an alternative solution for rapid on-site pathogen detection.

The hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) is a crucial reaction included in many biorefinery schemes for the production of renewable chemicals and fuels. The development of highly stable supported Ru-based catalysts in the polar protic liquid phase under hydrothermal conditions is still a major challenge. Here, we prepared a 0.85 wt% Ru/ZrO2@C catalyst using a new stabilization strategy based on the UiO-66 (Zr-MOF) material. The catalytic performance of this Ru/ZrO2@C in LA-to-GVL was tested and compared with commercial 5 wt% Ru/C at 10 bar H2, 413 K in water and also in high protic aqueous solution (pH = 1). The full conversion of LA and quantitative yield of GVL were achieved with both catalysts. However, the 5 wt% Ru/C showed poor resistance to deactivation already after the first run. ICP, XPS, HRTEM, AC-STEM, TPR and physisorption data showed that quick deactivation of Ru/C was mainly caused by the leaching of ruthenium in addition to the loss of surface area via carbonaceous deposition in micro-pores. In contrast, the self-prepared Ru/ZrO2@C catalyst showed no apparent drop in catalytic performance either in water or in high protic aqueous solution upon multiple recycling, and no leaching of ruthenium was found even under harsh conditions (pH = 1). Remarkably, in the Ru/ZrO2@C catalyst, Ru (probable single-atom) was highly dispersed on nanotetragonal ZrO2 (3.3 nm), embedded in the amorphous carbon, and no apparent Ru nanoclusters were observed even after reactions. TPR results indicated that this excellent stability might be attributed to strong metal–support interaction between Ru and nanotetragonal ZrO2.

This study investigates the photocatalytic reduction of nitroaromatic compounds upon visible light over novel Ce-doped UiO-66/graphene nanocomposites. Ce doped UiO-66 nanostructures and the corresponding graphene hybridized nanocomposites were facilely synthesized by means of one step solvothermal reaction. It has been demonstrated that produced nanocomposites could be used as highly efficient and chemical stable photocatalysts for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds under visible irradiation and ambient conditions. Compared with the bare UiO-66, Ce-UiO-66/GR distinctly enhanced photocatalytic activity. Ce as “ mediator ” introduced into the MOFs materials can greatly improve the electron transfer across the interface between grephene and the UiO-66 and further improve the visible light driven photoactivity. This is an effective strategy for the development of high photocatalytic activity MOFs based materials.

The utilization of cement-stabilized iron tailings as pavement base necessitates rigorous scrutiny of heavy metal ion leaching, particularly under fluctuating environmental pH conditions. Given the insufficient capacity of cement to stabilize Cr(Ⅵ), this paper explores the integration of defect-engineered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as additives in cement-stabilized iron tailings to reduce Cr(Ⅵ) leaching. Results shows that the utilization of MOFs material mitigates Cr(VI) leaching in cement-stabilized iron tailings while enhancing their mechanical properties. The Cr(Ⅵ) leaching from samples with the addition of UiO-66-(OH)₂ and UiO-66-(OH)₂-D exhibited a substantial reduction of 60.2 % and 88.6 %, respectively. The stabilized mechanism is attributed to the strong affinity between Cr(Ⅵ) and hydroxyl groups in MOFs. Furthermore, UiO-66-(OH) 2 -D has a larger pore diameter to expose more hydroxyl groups, which greatly improves its adsorption performance for Cr(Ⅵ). Meanwhile, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), splitting strength and compressive resilience modulus increased by 13.4 %, 35.1 % and 45.7 %, respectively. The mechanisms underlie that the MOFs enhanced the early hydration process and optimized of the pore size distribution within the solidified body. This study presents a viable and efficient approach for the sustained mitigation of Cr(Ⅵ) leaching within cement-stabilized iron tailings.

The oxidative esterification of aldehydes under mild conditions remains a significant challenge. This study introduces a unique defective UiO-66 to achieve gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) for efficient aldehyde oxidation under mild conditions. The construction and characterization of these materials are thoroughly investigated by techniques of XRD, SEM and TEM images, FT-IR, Raman, and XPS spectrum, emphasizing the unique microporous in defective UiO-66 are conducive to the fabrication of AuNCs. The catalytic performance of the prepared materials in aldehyde oxidation reactions is systematically evaluated, demonstrating the remarkable efficiency of dispersed Au@UiO-66-25 with high-content (9.09 wt%) Au-loading and ultra-small size (~2.7 nm). Moreover, mechanistic insights into the catalytic process under mild conditions (70 °C for 1 h) are provided, elucidating the determination of defective UiO-66 in the confined fabrication of AuNCs and subsequent furfural adsorption, which underlie the principles governing the observed enhancements. This study establishes the groundwork for the synthesis of highly dispersed and catalytically active metal nanoparticles using defective MOFs as a platform, advancing the catalytic esterification reaction of furfural to the next level.

This study introduces UiO-66-PO3, a novel functionalized metal–organic framework (MOF) tailored for efficient thorium separation and enrichment from wastewater. UiO-66-PO3 was synthesized by amination reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and 2-carboxyethylphosphonic acid. Comprehensive characterization techniques confirmed its successful synthesis and revealed its unique properties. UiO-66-PO3 exhibited a remarkable theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 320.0 mg g−1 for Th(IV) under optimized conditions. Its exceptional hydrophilicity significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity compared to UiO-66-NH2. Furthermore, UiO-66-PO3 retained over 89% of its initial adsorption capacity for Th(IV) after five adsorption–desorption cycles, highlighting excellent regeneration capabilities. UiO-66-PO3 emerges as a promising adsorbent for thorium separation due to its high adsorption capacity, regeneration performance, and tunable properties.

Ammonia borane (AB) is a highly promising hydrogen carrier with significant potential for safe and efficient hydrogen storage and transportation. However, its high chemical stability poses considerable challenges for hydrogen release, emphasizing the importance of highly efficient catalysts. In this study, we present Ru nanocatalysts supported on UiO-66-NH 2 -derived carbon nitride (Ru/CN) as high-performance catalysts for AB hydrolysis. A facile pyrolysis-impregnation method was employed to synthesize highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles with tunable sizes, while retaining the octahedral morphology of the MOF-derived support. Detailed characterizations revealed tunable Ru nanoparticle sizes achieved by simply adjusting the Ru loading. Among the catalysts, the 2.5Ru/CN, featuring Ru nanoparticles with an average size of 2.2 nm, achieved an impressive turnover frequency of 493 mol H 2 (mol Ru −1 ·min −1 ) at 30 °C, demonstrating exceptional catalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the optimized Ru cluster size enhances key catalytic steps, including H 2 O dissociation, AB activation, and H 2 desorption. This study highlights the critical role of fine-tuning nanoparticle sizes and provides valuable insights into the rational design of advanced catalysts for more efficient hydrogen production.

Food prone to spoilage has a huge food safety hazard, threatening people’s health, so early detection of food spoilage is a continuous and urgent need. Herein, we developed a dual-mode response sensor, alizarin complexone@UiO-66-NH 2 , which can accurately detect pH. The sensor demonstrated significant changes in color from pale yellow to deep pink, while the fluorescence shifted from light blue to blue violet. Moreover, both UV absorption and fluorescence intensity showed a linear correlation with pH raging from 4.5 to 7.5. These results indicate that the sensor effectively responds to pH, making it suitable for detecting the freshness of perishable food. To put this into practice, we integrated the sensor with cellulose-based filter paper to determine the freshness of shrimp and beef, which was proved to be effective in assessing freshness. In the future, it can be combined with intelligent colorimetric and fluorescence instruments to achieve visual detection.

A new all-in-one electrochromic device was demonstrated by employing photocurable methacrylated viologen and polyaniline/UiO-66/NiO/ZnO composite (PUNZ). Methacrylated viologen was dissolved in a photocurable deep eutectic solvent to make electrochromic eutectogel. PUNZ film was electrophoresed on ITO glass and was used as an electrode. UiO-66 can play as an electron donor combined with viologen moieties as electron acceptors to form an electron acceptor-donor complex. ZnO nanoflowers provide fast electron transfer leading to fast switching of the ECD. PANI and NiO can play as ion storage materials, which reduces ion trapping. The ECD with the use of PUNZ film can enhance coloration efficiency, lowering internal resistance, and increase ion conductivity. PUNZ120@ITO-based ECD exhibited a bleaching time 213 times faster than that of the device without using PUNZ film. The optical modulation of PUNZ120@ITO-based ECD maintains up to 95 % after 50 cycles, whereas that of the device without PUNZ film is 46 %.
