Abundant vacancies induced high polarization-attenuation effects in flower-like WS2 microwave absorbers

Jing Wang,Yuping Wang,Junye Cheng,Yiru Fu,Yao Li,Wangli Nie,Jingwei Wang,Bin Liu,Deqing Zhang,Guangping Zheng,Maosheng Cao

Defect engineering could provide new ideas for the design of transition metal disulfide electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers with high performance. Since the effects of dipoles on impedance matching and EMW absorption are crucial for the development of novel absorbers, the polarization attenuation dependence on defect engineering should be understood at micro- and macro-scales. In this paper, it is found that the defect-rich WS 2 nanoflowers synthesized by the cold plasma method possess excellent EMW absorption properties. Cold plasma treatment of materials is easy to perform and maintains the original shape of the material to a high degree. The formation of defects results in abundant electrochemically active sites, increased multiple reflection losses, improved dielectric properties and impedance matching in the materials. The RL min of the defect-rich material with a thickness of 3.19 mm is as high as −54.36 dB at 8.16 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth is 4.72 GHz. The results reveal that the formation of defective vacancies enhances the effects of dipole polarization of the material on improving its EMW absorption properties. Thus, this work provides not only a facile preparation route for novel EMW-absorbing materials, but also a new strategy for tunning defects in transition metal disulfides.

Construction of attapulgite-based one-dimensional nanonetwork composites with corrosion resistance for high-efficiency microwave absorption

Xu Kai,Gao Qingqing,Shi Shaoqi,Liu Pei,Ni Yinxu,Hao Zhilei,Xu Gaojie,Fu Yan,Liu Fenghua

Exploring high-efficiency and broadband microwave absorption (MA) materials with corrosion resistance and low cost is urgently needed for wide practical applications. Herein, the natural porous attapulgite (ATP) nanorods embedded with TiO 2 and polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles are synthesized via heterogeneous precipitation and in-situ polymerization. The obtained PANI–TiO 2 –ATP one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures can intertwine into three-dimensional (3D) conductive network, which favors energy dissipation. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the PANI–TiO 2 –ATP coating (20wt%) reaches −49.36 dB at 9.53 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) can reach 6.53 GHz with a thickness of 2.1 mm. The excellent MA properties are attributed to interfacial polarization, multiple loss mechanisms, and good impedance matching induced by the synergistic effect of PANI–TiO 2 nanoparticle shells and ATP nanorods. In addition, salt spray and Tafel polarization curve tests reveal that the PANI–TiO 2 –ATP coating shows outstanding corrosion resistance performance. This study provides a low-cost and high-efficiency strategy for constructing 1D nanonetwork composites for MA and corrosion resistance applications using natural porous ATP nanorods as carriers.

Combined design of dielectric material and layer structure of vanadium nitride/graphene composites for ultra-broadband microwave absorption

Gong Xin,Luo Pan,Wang Kaiming,Yang Yang,Zhu Huacheng,Yan Liping,Zhou Yanping

Vanadium nitride (VN) has gained much attention for microwave absorption due to its high electrical conductivity and easily tunable microscopic morphologies. However, its microwave dissipation ability is yet to be enhanced. In this work, vanadium nitride with 3D/2D hierarchical microflower structure is successfully fabricated via a rapid microwave hydrothermal method followed by a nitridation process enabled by the in-situ upstream thermal decomposition of melamine. By incorporating with N-doped graphene (N-rGO) in different ratios, the proportion of conduction loss and relaxation polarization loss in VN/N-rGO could be tuned, yielding a minimum reflection loss of − 45.9 dB at 10.4 GHz with 5 wt% filler loading. Further, to achieve optimal ultra-broadband microwave absorption, a rational double-layer absorber is constructed by attaching the N-rGO layer with lower normalized impedance but high dissipation capability under the VN/N-rGO layer with excessively high normalized impedance, delivering a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 10.3 GHz at a total thickness of 4.9 mm. Impedance matching and power loss density distribution analysis are done to illustrate the working mechanism of the double-layer structure. Graphical abstract

Biomass-derived oriented carbon aerogels with integrated high-performance microwave absorption and thermal insulation

Huanqin Zhao,Xin Yang,Jiachen Sun,Hualiang Lv,Xiaohuan Liu,Xuke He,Changqin Jin,Renchao Che

Three-dimensional (3D) carbon aerogel with high porosity and lightweight merit has emerged as an important high-performance electromagnetic (EM) absorption material. Despite great progress has been made, most reported 3D carbon aerogels suffer from non-renewability and high cost. Moreover, the randomly distributed porous structure restricts the effective regulation of microwave absorption. Herein, the sustainable shaddock peel cellulose (SPC) was adopted to construct an ultralight and orientated carbon aerogel through a facile bidirectional freezing technique and subsequently thermal treatment process. The resultant carbon aerogel is composed of ordered lamellar layers interconnected by supported bridges, forming a continuous 3D conductive network. Addition of a small amount of graphene oxides (GO) nanosheets in biomass aerogel enhances the interaction of SPC and promotes electron transmission along 3D conductive network. Through tuning the lamellar spacing of aerogel, the as-prepared carbon aerogel achieves a remarkable microwave absorption property with a strong reflection loss (RL) of -63.0 dB and broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.0 GHz under ultralow filler content of 4 wt.%. Moreover, this carbon aerogel also demonstrates excellent thermal insulation property, and is even comparable to commercial products. The present work paves the way for designing low-cost and sustainable biomass-derived carbon aerogel for lightweight and high-performance microwave absorption and infrared stealth function.

Biomass derived honeycomb porous carbon combined with metal oxide for broadband microwave absorption

Guodong Han,Fangyuan Qi,Yong Sun,Junxiang Zhou,Yudeng Wang,Sai Sui,Bo Feng,Yuxiang Jia,Xiaoxia Tian,Xiaokun Wang,Jiafu Wang,Shaobo Qu

Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are simple, low-cost, convenient, and sustainable materials with several advantageous features, such as multilevel porosity and structural repeatability. Herein, a new strategy involving the use of peanut shells and Fe 3 O 4 to prepare excellent absorbing materials is reported. During the carbonization process, the peanut shells transform into interconnected honeycomb-like porous carbon and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are synthesized from FeCl 3 · 6H 2 O, FeCl 2 · 4H 2 O, and NH 3 · H 2 O through a hydrothermal method. The obtained microwave absorption materials (MAMs) P-C-800@Fe 3 O 4 (1:0.5) exhibits outstanding MA performance. The composite exhibits the minimum reflection loss ( RL , −59 dB) at a thickness of 3.9 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth ( RL  < −10 dB) reaches 5.98 GHz at 2.3 mm. The synergistic enhancement between dielectric and magnetic losses enhances the MA capability of the honeycomb-like composite materials. Overall, this paper provides a prospective and convenient strategy for preparing biomass-derived honeycomb-like carbon for MA applications.

Defect engineering boosts microwave absorption in TaxNb1-xC nanowires

Wen Lan-Chao,Guan Li,Zhang Jia-Xin,Zhu Yu-Jie,Chen Peng,Suo Jia-Lu,Zhao Biao,Zhang Rui

The solid solution formed by the combination of multiple cations has been extensively investigated due to its distinctive lattice distortion effect, which imparts unique electromagnetic properties. In particular, the regulation of dielectric and magnetic properties can be achieved through element selection. Herein, the stability of Ta x Nb 1- x C was predicted through geometric optimization of crystal structure, and Ta x Nb 1- x C nanowires were successfully synthesized through F-ion-assisted carbothermal reduction method. The introduction of bimetallic ions forms significant carbon defects and lattice distortion, which undoubtedly induces the formation of strong interface polarization and defect polarization, resulting in high dielectric loss. Furthermore, the significant presence of imperfections leads to a decrease in both the dielectric constant and conductivity, thereby achieving impedance balance. The design of a one-dimensional structure also facilitates the formation of conductive pathways, promoting carrier transitions. Benefiting from a variety of loss mechanisms and appropriate impedance matching, solid solution Ta x Nb 1- x C shows excellent electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) performance. This research presents a promising strategy for developing single-phase materials with excellent EWA performance. Graphical abstract

Enhancing microwave absorption of bio-inspired structure through 3D printed concentric infill pattern

Huaiyu Dong,Shuailong Gao,Chen Yu,Zhichen Wang,Yixing Huang,Tian Zhao,Ying Li

Despite numerous reports on microwave absorbing materials and structures with excellent performance, research on the impact of the carrier of microwave absorbers and their preparation processes on microwave absorption performance still faces challenges. To address this issue, this study combines theoretical analysis, simulation, and experimental validation to compare the differences in microwave absorption performance between 3D printed ABS/CF/MWCNTs materials and traditionally cast paraffin/CF/MWCNTs materials. Furthermore, the study explores the impact of linear and concentric filling patterns in 3D printing processes on the performance of tree-shaped microwave absorbing meta-structures. From a material level perspective, the 3D printed ABS/CF/MWCNTs composite plate with a thickness of 3 mm has an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.16 GHz. Additionally, the bio-inspired tree-shaped structure optimized by the ant colony algorithm achieves an effective absorption bandwidth of up to 11.5 GHz at a thickness of 10.8 mm, with a minimum reflection loss of less than −9 dB across the entire frequency range (2–18 GHz). Moreover, the microwave absorbing meta-structure reinforced with carbon fiber-reinforced plastic laminates exhibits outstanding tensile and bending strength, with an average tensile strength and bending strength reaching 197.7 MPa and 188.6 MPa, respectively. In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the optimization of preparation processes for microwave absorbing materials or structures and offers a scientific basis for the design and application of high-performance microwave absorbing materials.

Multimaterial 3D-printing barium titanate/carbonyl iron composites with bilayer-gradient honeycomb structure for adjustable broadband microwave absorption

Ping Gong,Yan Li,Chenxing Xin,Qiaoyu Chen,Liang Hao,Qinglei Sun,Zheng Li

An effective method to fabricate barium titanate (BTO)/carbonyl iron powder (CIP) composites with enhanced microwave absorption (MA) performance was prepared via multimaterial digital optical processing (DLP) 3D printing technique. The bilayer-gradient honeycomb structural absorber (BGHSA) with adjustable broadband can be obtained by leveraging of varying compositional and structural design (layered thickness ratios , and gradient structures). The optimal reflection loss ( R L ) value and effective bandwidth of BGHSA can reach −51 dB and 15.4 GHz, respectively, exhibiting a distinct improvement ( R L increased by 32.4% and effective bandwidth by 42.9%) compared with the reference. The highly improved performances especially in the broadband absorption (15.4 GHz) were mainly attributed to the better impedance matching and waves multi-reflections. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate functionally graded materials for potential application in the absorption of electromagnetic waves .

Effect of Pore Morphology on the Dielectric Properties of Porous Carbons for Microwave Absorption Applications

Yunxia Huang,Yan Wang,Zhimin Li,Zi Yang,Chunhao Shen,Chuangchuang He

The porous carbons (PCs) with tunable morphologies and pore sizes were prepared by the sol–gel process via a freeze-drying technique for microwave absorption applications. The results of Raman spectroscopy and nitrogen sorption analysis showed that the graphitization degree was barely influenced as the ratio of tert-butanol (T) to resorcinol (R) decreased, while the pore morphologies changed from the disordered slit-shaped pores to the uniform cage-like pores. Dielectric properties of the as-prepared carbon samples were determined by a vector network analyzer in the frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz. Results showed that the effect of pore morphology on the dielectric loss of PCs was dominant in the case of similar graphitization. When the T/R ratio was 7.5, the sample with cage-like pores revealed the maximum values in the real part ε′ and the imaginary part ε″ of complex permittivity, which were 13.2–6.5 and 15.6–10.1, respectively, suggesting a better capacity of dielectric loss in the 8.2–12.4 GHz range. The proposed mechanism for the effect of the pore morphologies on microwave absorption performance was discussed.

Facile synthesis of highly conductive MoS2/graphene nanohybrids with hetero-structures as excellent microwave absorbers

Jixing Chai,Deqing Zhang,Junye Cheng,Yixuan Jia,Xuewei Ba,Ya Gao,Lei Zhu,Hao Wang,Maosheng Cao

Two-dimensional (2D) MoS2/graphene nanosheet (MoS2/GN) hybrids have been demonstrated to be promising microwave absorption (MA) materials due to their unique chemical and physical properties as well as rich impedance matching. However, the reported strategies for preparing MoS2/GN hybrids have limited their application potential due to the complex, high-cost and inefficient preparation processes. On the other hand, it is of note that the main source of graphene is based on converting insulating graphene oxides (GO) back to conductive reduced graphene oxides (RGO). Thus, the MA performance of obtained MoS2/RGO nanohybrids is greatly affected by the conversion process of GO. In this work, we prepared the MoS2/GN hybrids by a facile hydrothermal method with directly introducing highly pure and electroconductive GNs. It is found that the highest reflection loss value of the sample-wax containing 40% MoS2/GN is −57.31 dB at a thickness of 2.58 mm, and the bandwidth of RL values less than −10 dB can reach up to 12.28 GHz (from 5.72 to 18 GHz) when an appropriate absorber thickness between 1.5 and 4 mm is chosen. The excellent MA performances emanate from effective conjugation of MoS2 with GN (Mo–C bond between the interfaces), which provides the dielectric loss caused by multi-relaxation, conductance, and polarization. Taking into account the facile synthesis route and their excellent MA performance, the MoS2/GNs hybrid nanosheets and those composite materials with similar isomorphic hetero-structures are very promising for a wide range of MA applications.

He Hongcai,Luo Feifei,Qian Neng,Wang Ning

Three-phase composites of poly(vinylidene fluoride)-BaFe 12 O 19 -reduced graphene oxide (PVDF–BFO-RGO) were synthesized by a facile wet chemical method and hot-pressing approach. The phase structure, topography of the hybrid materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectra. Influence of RGO on their electromagnetic properties was investigated. Especially, improved microwave absorption and electromagnetic properties of BaFe 12 O 19 –PVDF composites by incorporating RGO were obtained and studied. The PVDF/BFO/RGO sample with m(RGO):m(BFO) = 5:100 shows the best microwave absorption properties with a minimum RL  = −32 dB at 11 GHz and with the bandwidth less than −20 dB from 9.6 to 12.8 GHz. The composites were believed to have potential applications as the microwave absorber.

Multimaterial 3D-printing of graphene/Li0.35Zn0.3Fe2.35O4 and graphene/carbonyl iron composites with superior microwave absorption properties and adjustable bandwidth

Yuxin Zuo,Xinran Su,Xinwei Li,Zhengjun Yao,Tingting Yu,Jintang Zhou,Jing Li,Jiong Lu,Jun Ding

Impedance matching and enhanced microwave attenuation have been proven to be effective strategies for improving reflection loss (R L ) and widening of the effective absorption (R L  < −10 dB) bandwidth of absorbers. Herein, we present novel multimaterial bilayer absorbing composites consisting of graphene/Li 0.35 Zn 0.3 Fe 2.35 O 4 /polymethyl methacrylate (GFP) as the matching layer and graphene/carbonyl iron powder/polymethyl methacrylate (GIP) as the absorption layer via our multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing method. Through numerical calculations, microwave absorption performance of the bilayer absorber is found to be greatly enhanced as compared to its constituents. In addition, the effective absorption bandwidth can be also tuned via differing ratios of the GFP/GIP layer thicknesses under a fixed total thickness. A GFP/GIP bilayer of 1.4/2.6 mm was optimized based on R L . Experimented maximum R L peaks of −46.1 and −17.9 dB were revealed at frequencies of 4.7 and 15.7 GHz, respectively, with effective absorption bandwidth up to 3.5 GHz (4.15–5.35, 14.7–17.0 GHz). The microwave absorption performance of the GFP  + GIP bilayer absorber is significantly improved by proper impedance matching and multiple-type loss forms. Overall this work provides a new strategy to manufacture efficient, broadband, and adjustable microwave absorbers by 3D printing .
