ZnO-Reinforced Thermal Regulating Microcapsules with Double-Layer Shell via Atomic Layer Deposition

Linfeng Li,Xi Wu,Xiaomeng Zhu,Yuanyuan Li,Liyi Zou,Xiuli Wang,Wenbin Li,Xiaomin Cheng

Conventional plain organic or inorganic shell for microcapsules has their own drawbacks, the organic shell has defects in thermal conductivity and stability; while the compactness and coverage of inorganic shell are not satisfactory. Herein, a novel approach to synthesis of organic–inorganic composite double-layer shell phase change microcapsule (DLSPCM) is proposed, which is achieved by forming inorganic outer shell on the surface of organic shell via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Taking the pristine microcapsule with paraffin core and melamine formaldehyde (MF) shell as an example, MF-ZnO composite double-layer shell (DLS) is formed in this paper. The melting enthalpy of DLSPCM obtained by 100 ALD cycles is 159.7 J g −1 , which is only 12.1 J g −1 lower than that of paraffin @ MF microcapsules (control sample), while the thermal conductivity of DLSPCM surges by 77.8%, and the thermal energy storage ability and thermal regulation performance are basically maintained. After 900 thermal cycles, the heat storage capacity of DLSPCM obtained by 100 ALD cycles decreased by only 3%. Besides, the photocatalytic performance and antibacterial activity of ZnO-reinforced DLSPCM are further confirmed. The successful design of DLSPCM via ALD is prospective for the encapsulation, modification, and reinforcement of phase change microcapsules.

Separation and microencapsulation of antibacterial compounds from wood vinegar

Xingyu Liu,Rui Cui,Jingwei Shi,Qian Jiang,Junli Gao,Ziming Wang,Xiaoyan Li

The major antibacterial components in wood vinegar was determined and novel microencapsulation of wood vinegar extract was successfully prepared to protect it from environmental stress. Three major fractions, including Fr.1 (mainly phenol and 2-methoxyphenol), Fr.2 (largely 2,6-dimethoxyphenol), and Fr.3 (mostly 3-methyl-1,2-cyclopentanedione), were extracted from wood vinegar by chromatography. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by serial dilution against eight pathogens, including an antibiotic-resistant strain. The minimum inhibition concentration were ranging in 1.56–12.50 μL/mL and 0.78–6.25 μL/mL, respectively, for Fr.1 and Fr.2, which shows that wood vinegar extract exhibits a broad antibacterial spectrum. To improve the stability of wood vinegar extract and make it easier to store, for the first time wood vinegar extract was encapsulated, alginate and chitosan were used as wall materials for the encapsulation using an ionic gelation method. The agar diffusion results showed that the microcapsules still exhibited excellent antibacterial action. The stability of the phenols in microcapsules was improved effectively and in vitro simulation digestion showed a more pronounced release in intestine. The application feasibility of wood vinegar extract was evident and real potential to produce natural antibacterial agents, with real possibility to be used in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Hydrophobic microcapsule modification of nitrogen–phosphorus flame retardant and its application in lignocellulosic materials

Yang Guochao,Zhang Qiuhui,Li Yan,Ouyang Yunshu

The microencapsulation of flame retardants can avoid the problems of water absorption and loss. In this paper, hydrophobic microcapsule-encapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (HMAPP) was prepared by ion exchange and Stöber method and applied to the preparation of hydrophobic flame-retardant kraft paper by impregnation. The microscopic morphology and element analysis of the hydrophobic microcapsules tested by TEM and SEM showed that nano-scale particles with a size of about 100 nm have been successfully prepared, and the core–shell structure has been formed. HMAPP constructed a rough structure with low surface energy on the surface of kraft paper and provided the kraft paper with hydrophobic property. The water contact angle of kraft paper reached 122.7 ° after treated by HMAPP, while it also enhanced the physical strength of the paper. Kraft had the self-extinguishing phenomenon after treated by HMAPP, which attached to the surface of kraft paper were heated and melted to release ammonia to dilute combustible gas and oxygen, and formed a flame-retardant layer containing SiO 2 particles, phosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, and carbon flakes on the fiber surface. There were C–C, C–O–C bonds in the carbon layer after flame-retardant treatment, indicating that the pentose contained in fiber has not been completely destroyed. In addition, the presence of Si and P elements in the residual carbon indicates that the decomposed flame retardant adheres to the surface of the fiber to block the heat transfer and flame spread.

Polyurea microcapsule encapsulation improves the contact toxicity, inhibition time and control effect of trans-2-hexenal against Fusarium graminearum

Dicheng Ma,Tao Zhang,Guoxian Wang,Chong Cao,Wei Mu,Beixing Li,Daolong Dou,Feng Liu

Trans -2-hexenal (T2H) shows satisfactory antagonistic activity against Fusarium graminearum , but its strong volatility and poor water solubility limit its further application in Fusarium head blight (FHB) control. In this study, T2H-loaded polyurea microcapsules (PU MCs) with different particle sizes were successfully prepared by an interfacial polymerization method, and the effect of MC encapsulation on the physical property limitations and bioactivity of T2H was evaluated. After being encapsulated, lipophilic T2H could be stably dispersed in water. MC encapsulation reduced the fumigation toxicity of T2H but increased its contact toxicity. The smaller the particle size was, the higher the toxicity of PU MCs to F. graminearum was. After 6 d of application, the inhibition rate of T2H against F. graminearum decreased by 77.26%, while that of T2H-loaded PU MCs with small particle sizes (T2H-loaded PU MCs-S) decreased by 54.29%, indicating that MC encapsulation prolonged the inhibition time of T2H. The results of the inoculation assay showed that MC encapsulation improved the inhibitory effect of T2H on F. graminearum infection and DON production in stored wheat kernels. Furthermore, seed soaking with T2H-loaded PU MCs-S reduced the pathogenic fungal load of wheat seeds and had no significant effect on seed germination. In conclusion, T2H encapsulated in MCs can be developed as a plant protection product for postharvest and presowing treatment of wheat.

The Mechanical Properties of Silicone Rubber Composites with Shear Thickening Fluid Microcapsules

Chun Wei,Xiaofei Hao,Chaoying Mao,Fachun Zhong,Zhongping Liu

In this study, Sylgard 184 silicone rubber (SylSR) matrix composites with shear thickening fluid (STF) microcapsules (SylSR/STF) were fabricated. Their mechanical behaviors were characterized by dynamic thermo-mechanical analysis (DMA) and quasi-static compression. Their damping properties increased with the addition ofSTF into the SR in DMA tests and the SylSR/STF composites presented decreased stiffness and an obvious positive strain rate effect in the quasi-static compression test. Moreover, the impact resistance behavior of the SylSR/STF composites was tested by the drop hammer impact test. The addition of STF enhanced the impact protective performance of silicone rubber, and the impact resistance increased with the increase of STF content, which should be ascribed to the shear thickening and energy absorption of STF microcapsules in the composites. Meanwhile, in another matrix, hot vulcanized silicone rubber (HTVSR) with a mechanical strength higher than Sylgard 184, the impact resistance capacity of its composite with STF (HTVSR/STF) was also examined by the drop hammer impact test. It is interesting to note that the strength of the SR matrix obviously influenced the enhancement effect of STF on the impact resistance of SR. The stronger the strength of SR, the better the effect of STF on improving the impact protective performance of SR. This study not only provides a new method for packaging STF and improving the impact resistance behavior of SR, but is also beneficial for the design of STF-related protective functional materials and structures. Keywords:shear thickening fluid;silicone rubber;microcapsule;impact resistance behavior

Preparation and Characterization of GX-50 and Vitamin C Co-encapsulated Microcapsules by a Water-in-Oil-in-Water (W1/O/W2) Double Emulsion–Complex Coacervation Method

Ruijuan Wang,Chunliu Ma,Haitao Yan,Pu Wang,Shuyan Yu,Tongyan Zhang,Zhigang Yin

Co-encapsulated xanthoxylin (GX-50) and vitamin C (Vc) microcapsules (GX-50-Vc-M) were prepared by the combination of a water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) double emulsion with complex coacervation. The W1/O/W2 double emulsion was prepared by two-step emulsification, and it has a uniform particle size of 8.388 μm and high encapsulation efficiencies of GX-50 (85.95%) and Vc (67.35%) under optimized process conditions. Complex coacervation occurs at pHs 4.0–4.7, which has the highest encapsulation efficiency of GX-50 and Vc at pH 4.5. The complex coacervate with tannic acid solidifying (namely, wet microcapsules) has better mechanical properties and also enhances the ability of co-encapsulation of active ingredients. The resulting microcapsules by freeze-drying of wet microcapsules were characterized by UV–vis absorbance spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FI-IR), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·) radical scavenging, and in vitro permeation measurements. Under optimal conditions, the encapsulation efficiency and drug loading of GX-50-Vc-M for GX-50 and Vc are, respectively, 78.38 ± 0.51 and 59.34 ± 0.56%, and 35.6 ± 0.68 and 29.8 ± 0.92%. A slight shift in the FTIR peak between single GX-50 or Vc and GX-50-Vc-M confirmed the successful co-encapsulation of GX-50 and Vc in microcapsules. GX-50-Vc-M has bridged irregular spherical aggregates, while GX-50 and Vc are, respectively, encapsulated in hydrophobic and hydrophilic cavities of microcapsules in an amorphous dissolved state. GX-50-Vc-M has the highest DPPH· radical scavenging rate of 62.51%, and the scavenging process of GX-50-Vc-M on DPPH· radicals is more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation model. Moreover, the in vitro permeation of GX-50 and Vc in GX-50-Vc-M can reach maximum values of 40 and 60%, respectively. This concludes that GX-50-Vc-M is a promising delivery system for the penetration of the antioxidant into the deeper layers of the skin for the antioxidant effect.

Preparation of Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials from Sulfonated Graphene Stabilized Pickering Emulsion

Weiping Li,Dajiang Mei,Jihu Wang,Hui Wu,Shaoguo Wen

Microencapsulated phase change materials (MCPCM) as a green energy storage material not only prevent leakage of phase change materials but also increase the heat transfer area of phase change materials. Extensive previous work has shown that the performance of MCPCM depends on the shell material and MCPCM with polymers, as the shell material suffers from low mechanical strength and low thermal conductivity. In this study, a novel MCPCM with hybrid shells of melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) and sulfonated graphene (SG) was prepared by in situ polymerization using SG-stabilized Pickering emulsion as a template. The effects of SG content and core/shell ratio on the morphology, thermal properties, leak-proof properties, and mechanical strength of the MCPCM were investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of SG into the shell of MUF effectively improved the contact angles, leak-proof performance, and mechanical strength of the MCPCM. Specifically, the contact angles of MCPCM-3SG were reduced by 26°, the leakage rate was reduced by 80.7%, and the breakage rate after high-speed centrifugation was reduced by 63.6% compared to MCPCM without SG. These findings suggest that the MCPCM with MUF/SG hybrid shells prepared in this study has great potential for application in thermal energy storage and management systems. Keywords:microencapsulated phase change materials;sulfonated graphene;Pickering emulsion

Novel method for microencapsulation of eutectic hydrated salt as a phase change material for thermal energy storage

Huo Xianliang,Xie Donghuan,Zhao Zimo,Wang Shujun,Meng Fanbin

Inorganic hydrated salts have many advantages over organic phase change materials (PCMs), such as higher thermal storage density, low cost, non-toxicity and non-flammability. In this research, microcapsules loaded with eutectic hydrated salt (EHS) as the core material was fabricated via coacervation method at room temperature, with ethyl cellulose/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene as the shell material. EHS consisted of sodium sulfate decahydrate and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate with a mass ratio of 1:3 was prepared as the PCM with its phase change temperature of 29.3°C and phase change enthalpy of 218.58 J/g. The chemical structures and morphology were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Results indicates that the almost spherical microcapsules, with diameter around 60 μm, are of core–shell microstructures and good chemical compatibility of the core and shell material. Differential scanning calorimetry results shows that microcapsules possess a high latent heat (178.36 J/g) and excellent thermal stability and reliability, which are suitable for thermal energy storage and management in practical applications. More importantly, the simple and environmentally conscious way of this study may be extended to other promising inorganics@organics PCMs with different core–shell structured compositions.

Eccentric magnetic microcapsules for MRI-guided local administration and pH-regulated drug release

Jingxian Huang,Wenwei Huang,Yin Chen,Yu Shrike Zhang,Jinshuang Zhong,Yan Li,Jianhua Zhou

In this work, we present a novel class of uniform eccentric magnetic microcapsules based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided local injection and pH-regulated drug release. The microcapsules contained magnetic nanoparticles in their PDMS shells, which allowed them to be easily tracked by MRI during administration. Besides, they showed pH-dependent drug release profiles due to dissolution of the embedded magnetic nanoparticles in acidic solutions. Moreover, by tuning the mass fraction of the magnetic nanoparticles, we could further regulate the release rate of drug molecules from them. As a demonstration, we investigated the delivery of cis-platinum using the microcapsules through an in vitro cell test, which confirmed the pH-controlled release of the drug in phantom tissues. Our study suggests that this type of eccentric magnetic microcapsules could be simultaneously employed as a potential imaging contrast and a smart drug delivery system, holding great potential for guided local therapy.

Enhance food security: Sustained release of clove essential oil microcapsules

Haochen Wu,Tao Jiang,Xiaohong Chen,Ping Liu

Foodborne illnesses remain a significant concern in the realm of public health. Managing food spoilage and controlling pathogenic microorganisms rely on synthetic chemicals, regrettably accompanied by various unfavourable attributes. In response to the escalating demand for innovative and secure alternative approaches, there has been a surge in the investigation of naturally sourced agents possessing antimicrobial characteristics, among which essential oils stand out. This study focuses on improving the stability of clove essential oil (CEO), and to achieve controlled release, the CEO microcapsules are prepared by solvent evaporation method with ethyl cellulose as the wall material. The results indicated optimum technological conditions: wall material mass fraction of 3%, core wall ratio of 1.0:1.5, emulsifier mass fraction of 8% and shear rate of 14000 r/min. Under these conditions, the encapsulation efficiency is 81.28%, and the yield rate is 90.58%. The CEOM were spherical with a size of 1.43-3.92 μm and had good thermal stability. The microcapsule under 50% ethanol showed a faster release rate and significant release amount. The microencapsulation of CEO with ethyl cellulose can not only improve the stability of CEO but also realise the controlled release of CEO, which has tremendous application value in antibacterial packaging. ZnO@ZIF-8@SiO2-Modified Microencapsulated Phase Change Material Coating on Cotton Fabric with Radiative Cooling and Thermoregulation Capabilities

Zhou Jianhua,Li Sitong,Niu Zhuanli

Combining phase change materials with textile materials is an important method to give textiles temperature regulation function. Herein, the microcapsulated phase change materials with ZnO@ZIF-8@SiO 2 -doped polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as hybrid shell (ZZS/PMMA MPCMs) were prepared through Pickering emulsion polymerization with n-octadecane (C18) as core and ZnO@ZIF-8@SiO 2 grafted with polyacrylic acid (MZZS) particles possessing radiation cooling performance as stabilizers. The effect of MZZS content on the morphology of phase change microcapsule, radiation cooling and temperature regulation properties of coated cotton fabrics was studied. The results indicated that when the MZZS content increased to 3.0 wt%, the prepared phase change microcapsule’s encapsulation efficiency was 50.34%, showing excellent latent heat storage and release properties. Furthermore, compared with the uncoated cotton fabric, the rising and dropping rate of the temperature of ZZS/PMMA MPCMs coated cotton fabric was much slower in different seasons, indicating excellent radiation cooling and temperature regulation performance.
