The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a four-electron reaction process with the relatively sluggish kinetics, which has become one of the main factors limiting the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction in water splitting, so it is crucial to improve the kinetics of OER. Herein, a new RuO 2 -based composite catalyst Co-Ru-Py@500 has been designed with abundant pore spaces formed by the stacking of nanoparticles, where the nanoparticle comprises CoO x /RuO 2 hybrid species and an encased carbon layer involving holey space. The Co-Ru-Py@500 possesses a relatively large specific surface area and a higher proportion of hydroxyl species than Ru-Py@500 without the introduction of CoO x species. The catalyst Co-Ru-Py@500 shows a smaller onset potential of 1.39 V vs. RHE and overpotential (230 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) than Ru-Py@500, and significantly favorable tafel slope, electrochemical impedance. In addition, the Fe-Ru-Py@500 and Ni-Ru-Py@500 introduced with FeO x or NiO x species are still inferior to Co-Ru-Py@500, but both of them show a better OER activity than Ru-Py@500. Through introducing Co, Fe, and Ni oxidation state species, the catalytic activity of RuO 2 can be promoted to varying degrees. The design strategy in this work provides a significant guidance for the rational design of efficient OER catalysts.

Owing to the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrochemical water electrolysis process, efficient and durable OER electrocatalysts are crucially needed. However, it is a great challenge to improve the comprehensive performance of OER electrocatalysts by utilizing various synergistic methodologies. To solve these issues, herein, Ir-doped Co-based compounds with regulated anions were synthesized using a coprecipitation method as the electrodes for boosting the OERs. Doping with Ir atoms modified the coordination environments and electronic structures of the CoOx-CO32- lattice, and the generated Co3+ species promoted the generation of active species for the OER. It is worthwhile noting that a hybrid crystalline/amorphous IrCoOx-CO32- compound was obtained with an Ir content of 10.09 wt.% and a large amount of Co3+, and demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic OER performance. The overpotential required for the developed IrCoOx-CO32- to achieve 10 mA cm-2 was as low as 207 mV with a very low Tafel slope of 61.7 mV dec-1, which is better than the commercial IrO2. Furthermore, anions created in the IrCoOx significantly promoted the OER, and their effects were decreased in the order of CO32- > PO43- > OH-. This work clarifies the synergistic mechanism of cations and anions on the electrocatalytic OER performance of Co-based compounds, providing new insights for designs of high-performance OER electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.

Photocorrosion triggered by the unconsumed photogenerated holes severely deteriorates the photocatalytic efficiency and stability of semiconductor photocatalysts, especially in seawater with complex ions. Here, we report a hierarchical hollow ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure integrating an inner CoO x nanocage and atomically dispersed Pt anchoring at surface S vacancies for hydrogen evolution from natural seawater (23.88 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and pure water (48.99 mmol g −1 h −1 ) under visible light. The dynamic Co 2+ /Co 3+ self-reconstruction of the inner CoOx cage effectively consumes photogenerated holes, while the outer Pt 1 single atoms localized at S vacancies serve as electron sinks to facilitate electron extraction and proton reduction. Benefiting from the dynamic hole-scavenging mechanism via oxidation self-reconstruction, the Pt 1 -ZnIn 2 S 4 @CoO X photocatalyst exhibits enhanced durability against alkali metal ions in seawater and maintains high reactivity for long-term hydrogen evolution. This work underscores the importance of light-induced transition metal dynamic self-reconstruction within hierarchical hollow heterostructure photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen evolution.

Proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis in acidic solutions holds great promise for advancing the green-hydrogen economy but limited by using precious-metal catalysts. Here, we develop a low-cost Co 3 O 4 -based catalyst with oxygen vacancies and Nd-insertion (Nd-CoO x ). This catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 317 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for acidic oxygen evolution reaction and remains stable over 800 h. The oxygen vacancies in Nd-CoO x enhance its catalytic activity, while Nd enables the long-term stability through a flexible “breathing mode” during oxygen evolution reaction, as revealed by in-situ methods such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The presence of Nd also improves the catalytic activity with the oxide path mechanism. This favorable strategy can be extended to other lanthanides. When used as the anode, Nd-CoO x delivers good performance in water electrolysis to achieve 200 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.69 V with low degradation over 100 h, and can reach 1 and 2 A cm −2 at 1.93 V and 2.12 V, respectively.

To enhance the activity of the nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 − RR), the development of oxygen vacancies electrocatalysts is a promising approach for improving the efficiency of ammonia synthesis. However, the mechanism by which oxygen vacancies regulate NO 3 − RR to ammonia remains poorly understood. In this study, a series of CoO X /Fe 3 O 4 composite catalysts derived from ZIF-67 containing oxygen vacancies (OVs) were synthesized to elucidate the role of OVs on the activity and selectivity of ammonia synthesis. Structural characterization revealed that the concentration of OVs in the catalysts increased with the addition of iron ions. Electrochemical experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that OVs promote interfacial electron transfer, alter the adsorption conformation of NO 3 * on the catalyst surface, and reduce the activation energy barrier of NO 3 *. Nonetheless, we observed that high concentrations of OVs exhibited a preference for the product NO 2 − at high potentials, which we attribute to the strong adsorption of NO* by the OVs, impeding the subsequent hydrogenation process. Additionally, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and activated hydrogen (H*) quenching experiments indicated that the catalyst was unable to deliver substantial amounts of H* in the buffered electrolyte, resulting in low ammonia productivity. The ammonia Faraday current efficiency (FE) of CoO X /Fe 3 O 4 -90 in 0.1 M KOH and 0.1 M NO 3 − was 82.22 %, with an ammonia production rate of 1.09 mmol h −1 cm −2 .

Performance of electrocatalysts towards oxygen-involving reactions is strongly associated with the surface and interface properties . Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) materials have been widely explored as oxygen-involving electrocatalysts but their intrinsic catalytic activity is always poor. We present here a surface oxygen plasma approach to directly treat CoPc for producing interfacial CoO x nanodots anchored on CoPc (CoO x /CoPc), which exhibits high activity towards both oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). The optimized CoO x /CoPc demonstrates a much better catalytic activity with a half-wave potential of 0.63 V and an average electron transfer number of 3.64 than the CoPc (0.59 V and n = 2.37) towards ORR in alkaline media. Moreover, OER performance of the CoO x /CoPc is also significantly enhanced, showing a current density of 22.2 mA cm −2 that is 36 times higher than that of CoPc (0.6 mA cm −2 ) at an overpotential of 0.49 V. It is found that the enhanced performance of the CoO x /CoPc is attributed to the high electrochemical active surface area, highly active CoO x , as well as desired interfacial structure.

CoO x -doped ordered mesoporous carbon (Co-OMC) was synthesized and employed as an efficient activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of refractory pollutants. Co-OMC possessed high BET specific surface area (723 m 2 /g) and uniform pore size distribution (∼4 nm) because of its ordered mesoporous structure. 20 mg/L phenol could be completely degraded with the addition of 0.1 g/L Co-OMC and 1 mM PMS in 60 min. In addition, the catalytic activity of Co-OMC for PMS activation was much higher than some efficient catalysts such as Co 3 O 4 , CoFe 2 O 4 and OMC. Besides, Co-OMC showed remarkable efficiency for the destruction of seven representative pollutants. Results indicated that the catalytic activity of Co-OMC increased with the calcination temperature increasing, which may be caused by the higher defect degree at higher calcination temperature. In addition, various practical parameters such as PMS concentration, initial pH, anion, nature organic matter and reaction temperature were systematically investigated using phenol as the target pollutant. The electron-spin resonance and radical quenching experiments results demonstrated that reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as SO 4 − , OH, O 2 − and 1 O 2 , were involved in the degradation of phenol, and their generation strongly depended on the solution pH. Based on these results, a catalytic mechanism for PMS activation was proposed: O 2 − and 1 O 2 were responsible for the degradation of phenol when initial pH was 6, but the role of SO 4 − and OH was limited; while SO 4 − and OH were the major reactive species when initial pH was 11.0.

The development of single-atom catalysts with effective interfaces for biomass conversion is a promising but challenging research area. In this study, a Ru1/CoOx catalyst was successfully fabricated with the impregnation method, which featured Ru single atoms on a cobalt oxide substrate. The Ru1/CoOx catalyst showed superior performance in the selective electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a high value-added product. The introduction of Ru single atoms with an ultralow loading of ∼0.5 wt % was revealed to accelerate the electroredox of Co2+/Co3+/Co4+ and improve the intrinsic activity of the CoOx substrate with an FDCA selectivity of 76.5%, which is better than that of the pristine CoOx electrocatalysts (62.7%). The interfacial synergistic effect of the Ru1/CoOx interface clarified that Ru single atoms can enhance the adsorption of HMF at the Ru1/CoOx interface, which promoted the rate-determining step of the selective C–H bond activation for FDCA production. This finding provides valuable insights into the rational design of single-atom catalysts with functional interfaces for biomass upgrading.

Hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB) has attracted much attention due to its high hydrogen content and stability. Therefore, the design and construction of low-cost and high-performance catalysts for AB hydrolysis are of great significance. In this work, Co/CoFeO x -X (X is the additional content of Fe precursor) bimetallic oxide nanofilms having an amorphous structure were prepared on an (IL)/water interface for the hydrolysis of AB. Strategies including the rapid addition of metal precursors and variation of Co/Fe atom ratios were employed to induce an amorphous structure for inhibiting the rearrangement of the formed metal nuclei and optimizing the alloying effect on the IL/water interface. This ultrathin amorphous nanofilm structure can expose more metal active sites. Moreover, the electronic interaction between Fe and Co after doping Fe into the Co/CoO x nanofilms facilitates the adsorption and activation for AB and H 2 O molecules. As a result, the optimized Co/CoFeO x -25 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 12.25 mol H2 ·mol Co –1 ·min –1 , which is considerably higher than that of the monometallic Co/CoO x catalyst. This enhanced activity can be ascribed to the morphology advantages and the electronic effect of Fe and Co on the Co/CoFeO x -25 catalyst. This work provides a promising method to design the highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrolysis of chemical hydrides.

As alternatives to bioenzymes, nanozymes find promising
applications
in biochemical sensing thanks to their recognized superiorities, but
their lack of specific interactions with targets of interest seriously
hinders the exploration of selective analytical strategies when no
external receptors are employed. Additionally, most nanozymes exhibit
poor catalytic efficiency, much lower than their natural counterparts,
thus restricting the sensitivity of detection. Different from the
explored “turn-off” analytical principle relying on
the coordination of the target with a nanozyme catalytic product,
here we proposed an analyte-unique “signal-on” strategy
based on the direct target–nanozyme interaction for the sensitive
sensing of uranyl via temperature-programming the peroxidase (POD)-mimetic
activity of CoO x . As wet-chemical temperature
increased, the oxygen vacancy (O V ) content on CoO x surfaces exhibited a volcano-type trend, and its
catalytic efficiency correlated with the former positively. UO 2 2+ was found to stimulate the POD-like activity
of CoO x via increasing O V ,
exhibiting excellent specificity against other common species. Leveraging
the unique CoO x –UO 2 2+ interaction and the temperature-programmed activity of CoO x , we validated a “light-up”
colorimetric approach for UO 2 2+ selective determination,
achieving a wide detection range (0.01–2 μM) and a low
limit (5 nM). A deployable device based on intelligent reading was
further fabricated to enable on-site monitoring of the analyte. Our
work provides a “signal-on” nanozyme sensing strategy
for the quantification of UO 2 2+ , featuring specific
response, catalytic signal amplification, and free from bioreceptors.
Also, it proves a facile route to achieve dual modulation of enzyme-mimetic
activity and analyte response for broader applications.

Direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs) operating at low temperatures represent a promising clean energy technology, generating only nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O) as byproducts. However, their widespread implementation is hindered by the kinetically sluggish six‑electron ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) at the anode. Herein, we report a rational design of oxygen‑vacancy‑rich CoOx modified Pt nanoparticles via a combined crystal facet and defect engineering strategy. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the optimized catalyst exhibits a mass activity of 165 A g-1 Pt, which is 47% higher than that of unmodified Pt cubic nanoparticles. Combined electrochemical and in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses reveal that the enhanced performance stems primarily from the abundant oxygen vacancies within the CoOx. These vacancies facilitate the formation of adsorbed OH species (OHad), and induce strong metal support interactions (SMSI), thereby optimizing the reaction pathway and kinetics. This study provides valuable insights into the design of high performance AOR electrocatalysts through defect engineering.

Monolithic inverse catalysts were fabricated by optimizing treatment conditions. • O V generation could be significantly promoted by optimizing inverse structure. • Alternating magnetic field could enhance charge transfer across inverse interface. • Magnetocatalytic oxidation required lower temperatures than traditional heating. • Magnetocatalytic purification encompassed demands of intermittent VOCs source. Catalytic oxidation is widely employed in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation. The continuous optimization of catalytic oxidation technology encompasses the materials design and heat sources innovations. Herein, we found that adjusting the temperature and H 2 treatment could regulate inverse structure of CoO x /Ni foam (CoO x /NF) monolithic catalysts, resulting in enhancement of oxygen vacancies generation. This promotional effect could be further amplified by electromagnetic induction heating (EMIH), which was probably ascribed to the acceleration of charge transfer across the inverse interface induced by alternating magnetic field. Consequently, CoO x /NF-300R, as an inverse catalyst synthesized under optimized conditions, could exhibit superior activity for catalytic oxidation of VOCs including benzene, toluene and o -xylene. The demanded temperature for removal of toluene in EMIH mode was reduced by approximately 50°C compared to that in traditional heating mode. Furthermore, the VOCs catalytic oxidation system composed of CoO x /NF-300R and electromagnetic induction could meet the requirements for rapid and efficient purification of multi-species and intermittent pollution sources.
