Tb3+/Gd3+-codoped BiF3 nanoparticles were synthesized via a controlled, room-temperature co-precipitation method to address the critical challenge of low photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency in singly Tb3+-doped fluoride phosphors. Structural analysis confirmed a stable cubic phase (Fmm) with successful substitutional doping on Bi3+ sites. At the optimal 5 : 5 mol% Tb : Gd ratio, a quantum yield of 13.5%—a fourfold enhancement over Tb3+-only systems—was achieved. The mechanism of enhancement operates through two complementary, excitation-wavelength-dependent pathways: (I) Under short-UV irradiation (230–260 nm), Gd3+ acts as a sensitizer—harvesting photons via its 8S7/2 → 6IJ/6PJ transitions and transferring energy to Tb3+ via resonance Gd3+ → Tb3+ energy transfer, directly proven by excitation spectroscopy. (II) Under 365 nm excitation—where Tb3+ is the primary absorber and Gd3+ absorbs negligibly—Gd3+ enhances PL efficiency through a complementary crystal field modification mechanism: Gd3+ substitution modifies the local phonon environment around bulk Tb3+ sites, reducing the non-radiative depopulation rate of the 5D4 excited state. This is directly evidenced by time-resolved PL decay showing +65% and +87% elongation of Tb3+ bulk lifetime components (τ2 and τ3) upon co-doping. CIE chromaticity analysis confirms high-purity green emission. These findings provide dual-mechanism characterization of Gd3+/Tb3+ co-doping in BiF3, establishing a rational design framework for Gd3+-enhanced lanthanide phosphors.

Ce-doped gadolinium gallium aluminum oxide (Ce: GGAG) precursors were first prepared by the microwave-assisted homogeneous precipitation method (MAHP). Thermal gravity-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area analysis (BET) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were employed to investigate the crystal structure, phase evolution and morphologies of the Ce: GGAG precursors and powders. The influence of Ga ion concentration in the salt solution on the properties of Ce: GGAG powders was investigated. All the precursors were transformed into single-phase GGAG after being calcined at 950 °C in a furnace for 3 h. Monodispersed Ce: GGAG powders were obtained as the Ga ion concentration was lower than 0.06 mol/L. Single-phase and dense Ce: GGAG ceramics were obtained after sintering at 1600 °C in a flowing oxygen atmosphere for 10 h. Specifically, the Ce: GGAG ceramic reached its maximum density of ~6.68 g/cm3, which was close to its theoretical density of 6.70 g/cm3, and exhibited the highest optical transmittance of 65.2% at 800 nm after hot isostatic pressing sintering (HIP) as the Ga ion concentration was 0.02 mol/L. The decay time and light yield of the GGAG ceramic were 35 ns and 35,000 ± 1250 ph/MeV, respectively, suggesting that Ce: GGAG ceramics prepared using MAHP-synthesized nanopowders are promising for scintillation applications.

The high incidence and complex subtypes of prostate cancer put forward higher requirements for accurate diagnosis. Furthermore, advanced prostate cancer is prone to metastasis. Single biological imaging mode faces a challenge of sensitive and fast bioimaging of metastasic prostate cancer. Thus, exploring a nanoprobe with multi-mode imaging function has an important impact on preoperative imaging and intraoperative visualization guide of metastatic prostate cancer. Herein, based on the optical properties and X-ray attenuation capability of Au nanodots as well as the slow electronic relaxation of Gd 3+ , we designed and fabricated the multifunctional nanoprobe Au/Gd nanodots for multi-mode imaging and accurate diagnosis of bone metastatic prostate cancer. The results showed that multiple imaging modes complement each other to achieve high-precision of metastasic prostate cancer detection and accurately guide treatment. In addition, in vitro/vivo experiments showed that Au/Gd nanodots had good biocompatibility and biosafety. Therefore, the prepared multifunctional nanoprobe may provide new strategies and insights for precise diagnosis of metastatic prostate cancer in clinical practice.

Herein, diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) nanocrystals (NCs) of Gd x TM 0.07 Zn 0.93−x O (TM=Co, Mn) with Gd concentrations of 3 at% and 6 at% and a fixed TM concentration of 7 at% were synthesized using sol-gel technique, and their multifunctional properties were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed a wurtzite hexagonal structure for all synthesized NCs with no detectable impurity peaks. Williamson–Hall (W–H) plots revealed a trend of decreasing crystallite size and increasing lattice strain with higher doping levels. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based morphological analysis showed irregularly shaped NCs with an average crystallite size of 32–40 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the 3 + oxidation state of Gd and 2 + states for Co/Mn, as well as the presence of oxygen defects. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) absorption spectroscopy indicated a reduction in the band gap for the doped samples. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra revealed the formation of defects and oxygen vacancies in the samples. Magnetic characterization demonstrated room-temperature ferromagnetic (RTFM) behavior in all doped NCs, which was further verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Combining with PL and XPS results, the observed ferromagnetism is attributed to interactions between dopant ions and trapped electrons, mediated by magnetic polarons. Dielectric measurements revealed an increase in both the dielectric constant and dielectric loss, suggesting enhanced dielectric polarization. The AC conductivity increased with frequency due to hopping charge carriers. These results show that oxygen vacancies created by Gd 3+ and Co 2+ /Mn 2+ co-doping in the host ZnO lattice have a significant impact on the multifunctional properties of ZnO nanocrystals.

Development of nanotheranostic agents with near-infrared (NIR) absorption offers an effective tool for fighting malignant diseases. Lanthanide ion neodymium (Nd3+)-based nanomaterials, due to the maximum absorption at around 800 nm and unique optical properties, have caught great attention as potential agents for simultaneous cancer diagnosis and therapy. Herein, we employed an active nanoplatform based on gadolinium-ion-doped NdVO4nanoplates (NdVO4:Gd3+NPs) for multiple-imaging-assisted photothermal therapy. These NPs exhibited enhanced NIR absorption and excellent biocompatibility after being grafted with polydopamine (pDA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) layers on their surface. Upon expose to an 808 nm laser, these resulting NPs were able to trigger hyperthermia rapidly and cause photo-destruction of cancer cells. In a xenograft tumor model, tumor growth was also significantly inhibited by these photothermal agents under NIR laser irradiation. Owing to the multicomponent nanostructures, we demonstrated these nanoagents as being novel contrast agents for in vivo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, X-ray computed tomography (CT), photoacoustic (PA) imaging, and second biological window fluorescent imaging of tumor models. Thus, we believe that this new kind of nanotherapeutic will benefit the development of emerging nanosystems for biological imaging and cancer therapy. Keywords:near infrared light;NdVO4;polydopamine;photothermal therapy;multimodal imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents are broadly employed for better clinical trials in MR imaging. Magnevist solution (Gd-DTPA), a clinical MRI contrast agent, possesses inherent shortcomings like poor r 1 relaxation, short half-time, nephrotoxicity, etc. To overcome these problems, Gd-DTPA-grafted protein assemblies (Gd-P-ABs) loading with anticancer drug cisplatin and photosentizer IR-780 are constructed via chelation of Gd 3+ . Gd-P-ABs exhibit dual MR/fluorescence (FL) imaging–guided chemo/photothermal therapy. Interestingly, Gd-P-ABs behave as aggregation-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with an extremely high r 1 value of 26.391 s −1 m m −1 , which is about 5.5-fold larger than Gd-DTPA (≈4.8 s −1 m m −1 ). Consequently, better MRI performance is presented with the same concentration of Gd ions. When exposed to acidic tumor microenvironment and light irradiation, Gd-P-ABs show significant drug release capacity. Good cell killing ability in vitro is also determined due to effective folate-targeting ability and high photo–heat conversion. In vivo MR/FL imaging results reveal that Gd-P-ABs possess high-sensitivity tumor-targeting imaging and long tumor retention, which are attributed to the folate-targeting ability and small size effect. Combined chemo/photothermal therapy in vivo demonstrates that the tumor can be eventually ablated. Altogether, the Gd-P-ABs possess great potential for clinical imaging-guided tumor therapy.

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) in gadolinium and tin ions doped lead lanthanum zirconate titanate ceramics was investigated. Five samples with different compositions and hence different relaxor behaviors and polarization properties were prepared via a conventional solid-state reaction process. The ECE was measured directly by a high resolution thermometer from 293 K to 423 K. The results show that the ECE is mainly determined by the number of polarization states and polar-correlation strength . Furthermore, the results reveal that the temperature variation of ECE around Curie temperature is associated with the generation rate, activation energy , size and freezing temperature of polar nanoregions. As a result, Sn doped PLZT composition exhibits the best ECE, i.e. , a peak ΔT > 2 K obtained at 5 MV/m, and ΔT > 1.78 K achieved in the whole temperature range measured at the same field, which are very attractive for high performance ECE devices.

Bacterial infections pose a serious threat to human health, with emerging antibiotic resistance, necessitating the development of new antibacterial agents. Cu2+ and Ag+ are widely recognized antibacterial agents with a low propensity for inducing bacterial resistance; however, their considerable cytotoxicity constrains their clinical applications. Rare-earth ions, owing to their unique electronic layer structure, hold promise as promising alternatives. However, their antibacterial efficacy and biocompatibility relative to conventional antibacterial agents remain underexplored, and the variations in activity across different rare-earth ions remain unclear. Here, we systematically evaluate the antibacterial activity of five rare-earth ions (Yb3+, Gd3+, Sm3+, Tb3+, and La3+) against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, benchmarked against well-established antibacterial agents (Cu2+, Ag+) and the antibiotic norfloxacin. Cytotoxicity is also assessed via live/dead staining of fibroblasts after 24 h rare-earth ion exposure. Our findings reveal that rare-earth ions require higher concentrations to match the antibacterial effects of traditional agents but offer the advantage of significantly lower cytotoxicity. In particular, Gd3+ demonstrates potent bactericidal efficacy against both planktonic and biofilm bacteria, while maintaining the lowest cytotoxicity toward mammalian cells. Moreover, the tested rare-earth ions also exhibited excellent antifungal activity against Candida albicans. This study provides a critical empirical framework to guide the selection of rare-earth ions for biomedical applications, offering a strategic direction for the development of novel antimicrobial agents.

La 0.8- x Gd x Sr 0.2 MnO 3 (LGSMO, 0.05≤ x ≤ 0.15) ceramics were synthesized via the sol-gel method and sintered at 950 °C for 10 h. The XRD and TEM analyses indicate a systematic evolution of the unit cell parameters with Gd 3+ doping, though the rhombohedral perovskite structure (R-3c) remains stable across the entire series. The La 0.8- x Gd x Sr 0.2 MnO 3 ceramics exhibited an average grain size ranging from 177 to 249 nm. The chemical composition and successful incorporation of Gd 3+ into the structure were confirmed by XPS and EDS analyses. Furthermore, The XPS analysis confirmed the +3 oxidation states of La and Gd, and a mixed Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ valence state. All samples exhibited a paramagnetic phase (PM)-ferromagnetic phase (FM) transition near the Curie temperature (Tc), as characterized by Banerjee's criterion (Arrott plots) and the magnetization normalization. A monotonic decrease in Tc from 306 K ( x = 0.05) to 259 K ( x = 0.15) is observed with increasing Gd 3+ content, a trend that, according to density functional theory (DFT), originates from the modified double-exchange interaction. The DFT calculations of the density of states for the LGSMO ceramics reveal that the Mn 3d orbitals shift progressively toward the Fermi level with increasing Gd 3+ content. This shift indicates a reduced bonding capability of the Mn 3d orbitals, which elucidates the underlying cause for the observed variations in the Tc and magnetocaloric properties. A Curie temperature of 306 K and a peak entropy change of 4.82 J/(kg K) were obtained for the La 0.75 Gd 0.05 Sr 0.2 MnO 3 ( x = 0.05) ceramic.

To overcome traditional barriers in optical imaging and microscopy, optoacoustic-imaging has been changed to combine the accuracy of spectroscopy with the depth resolution of ultrasound, achieving a novel modality with powerful in vivo imaging. However, magnetic resonance imaging provides better spatial and anatomical resolution. Thus, a single hybrid nanoprobe that allows for simultaneous multimodal imaging is significant not only for cutting edge research in imaging science, but also for accurate clinical diagnosis. A core-shell-structured coordination polymer composite microsphere has been designed for in vivo multimodality imaging. It consists of a Fe 3 O 4 nanocluster core, a carbon sandwiched layer, and a carbocyanine-Gd III (Cy-Gd III ) coordination polymer outer shell (Fe 3 O 4 @C@Cy-Gd III ). Folic acid-conjugated poly(ethylene glycol) chains are embedded within the coordination polymer shell to achieve extended circulation and targeted delivery of probe particles in vivo. Control of Fe 3 O 4 core grain sizes results in optimal r 2 relaxivity (224.5 × 10 –3 m −1 s -1 ) for T 2 -weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Cy-Gd III coordination polymers are also regulated to obtain a maximum 25.1% of Cy ligands and 5.2% of Gd III ions for near-infrared fluorescence and T 1 -weighted magnetic resonance imaging, respectively. The results demonstrate their impressive abilities for targeted, multimodal, and reliable imaging.

Fluorescence imaging and magnetic resonance imaging have been research hotspots for adjuvant therapy and diagnosis. However, traditional fluorescent probes or contrast agents possess insurmountable weaknesses. In this work, we reported the preparation of dual-mode probes based on mesoporous silica nanomaterials (MSNs), which were doped with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) dye and Gd 3+ through a direct sol-gel method. In this system, the obtained materials emitted strong red fluorescence, in which the maximum emission wavelength was located at 669 nm, and could be applied as effective fluorescence probes for fluorescence microscopy imaging. Furthermore, the introduction of Gd 3+ made the nanoparticles effective contrast agents when applied in contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging because they could improve the contrast of MR imaging. The excellent biocompatibility of these nanoparticles, as demonstrated via a typical CCK-8 assay, and their performance in fluorescence cell imaging and MR imaging shows their potential for applications in biomedical imaging.

Deep ultraviolet (UV) mechanoluminescence (ML) materials hold broad application prospects in bright-field visualization detection, solid-blind imaging, and information storage due to their shorter emission wavelengths. However, current research on deep UV ML materials primarily focuses on trap control to suppress their reuse. Here, we enhance the deep UV ML of Gd 3+ ions by constructing a 4f-5d coupling between Pr 3+ ions and the 6 P 7/2 energy level of Gd 3+ ions in the wide-bandgap Lu 3 Al 2 Ga 3 O 12 with a garnet structure. The results suggest that the deep UV ML in Lu 3 Al 2 Ga 3 O 12 : Pr 3+ , Gd 3+ is trap-independent, and its self-recovery property originates from the continuous triboelectric charge transfer between polydimethylsiloxane and the ML particles. Sterilization experiments using deep UV ML against pathogenic E. coli highlight the potential of deep UV ML materials for continuous sterilization applications.
