Tribological Behavior of Self-Lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti3SiC2 Composites Under Dry Sliding Friction

Yang Zhang,Qingsong Li,Xi Xie,Guoxin Sui

Most polymers and composites suffer from high friction and wear due to their inherent lack of self-lubrication under dry sliding friction. Herein, the lamellar Ti 3 SiC 2 MAX material is prepared via vacuum sintering of a powder mixture containing Ti, Si, and TiC in the molar ratio of 1:1.1:1.8 at 1500°C under a pressure of 30 MPa for 2 h. Combined with a soft graphite phase (5 wt%), self-lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti 3 SiC 2 (PG-T) composites are successfully prepared, dependent on Ti 3 SiC 2 (5 and 15 wt%) as a hard reinforced phase and lubrication additive. PG-T composites are fabricated via a multistep compounding approach using a twin-screw extruder. The incorporation of Ti 3 SiC 2 and graphite within the PEEK matrix manifests a highly pronounced synergistic effect, which not only facilitates effective lubrication but also significantly enhances the load-bearing capability, thereby effectively circumventing direct contact between the counterface and the polymeric matrix. The sliding tests are conducted on the pins (diameter: 6.0 mm, height: 17.0 mm) and friction pair (45#steel, roughness Ra: 148 nm) under dry friction. In terms of PV-condition (up to 6 MPa and 3 m/s) (PV is a parameter that reflects the load-bearing capacity of polymer materials, which is defined by multi-plying the pressure P by the sliding speed V), PG5-T15 exhibits self-lubricating properties, featured by an average coefficient of friction (ACOF) as low as 0.119 for the pin-plate test and a specific wear rate (SWR) of only 0.58 × 10 −6 mm 3 /Nm. Meanwhile, PG-T composites present excellent thermal properties based on the thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) and storage moduli (G′) during friction and wear. Considering the practical applications of tribo-composites, these findings highlight the potential of PG-T composite as a candidate for demanding tribological applications.

Toward flexible electronics: A novel polyurethane integrating self-healing, UV-protective, reprocessable, and degradable properties

Xiao-qin Feng,Yi Wang,Xun Dai,Xiao-dong Liu,Yuan Liu

Flexible electronics are striving in modern society, and they impose harsh and urgent requirements for flexibility on electronic package substrates. However, traditional materials, including ceramics, metals, or polymers are lack of flexibility. Herein, a polyurethane named PU-D1Q1VF1 is proposed via incorporating carefully selected biobased units and synergistic dynamic bonds, and the PU-D1Q1VF1 not only meets the basic requirements of flexibility but also possesses properties of self-heal, UV-protection, reprocessability, and degradability. The polycaprolactone diol (PCL diol) was employed as the soft segment, and the bis(2-hydroxyethyl) disulfide (HEDS) and lignin derived model monomer hydroquinone were selected as chain extenders. Moreover, carefully synthesized bio-based monomer (E)-4-(((furan-2-ylmethyl)imino)methyl)-2-methoxyphenol (VF) was used as the capping agent, which could facilitate the self-healing process of the PU-D1Q1VF1.

Study on the Preparation and Separation Performance of Microwave-Assisted Ru(IV)-TIIP

Bingqian Wang,Ting Huo,Wan Xu,Xiaojian Ou,Yuanjun Sun,Yanjun Cui,Yongsheng Xiang,Zhenbin Chen

The porous thermosensitive imprinted polymer of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP was prepared in a short time with the aid of a microwave. The structure and morphology of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP were characterized by ATR-FTIR, SEM-EDS, and BET. The thermosensitive block PDEA- b -P(DEA- co -AM) was introduced into the imprinted polymer preparation system. N-MAM and AA were selected as functional monomers, and stable HIPE Pickering emulsions were prepared under high-speed stirring, combined with multi-field coupling technology. The synthesis process of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP was studied, and the dosages of template ion, functional monomer, and cross-linking agent, as well as microwave power, polymerization temperature, and polymerization time, were optimized. Under optimal technological conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP reached 0.20 mmol L −1 at 33°C, and adsorption equilibrium was reached within 240 min. Theoretical studies showed that the adsorption of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP conformed to the quasi-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. When MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP was applied to a diluted platinum group catalyst leaching solution, its adsorption capacity for MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP to Ru was 0.23 mmol L −1 , and the purity of platinum group metals increased from 53.72% to 76.43% after one adsorption/desorption cycle. After 11 reuses, the adsorption capacity maintained 70.06% of the original capacity, indicating that MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP had good potential in industrial applications.

Stabilized superhydrophobic composite membranes prepared by electrospinning for oil–water separation

Xiaohui Wang,Xinmei Li

In dealing with the oil–water separation process, improving the oil–water selectivity of the membrane surface and increasing the porosity within the membrane are effective means to achieve durable and efficient oil–water separation. Therefore, polystyrene/polyacrylonitrile-polyvinylidene fluoride/Polydimethylsiloxane Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (PS/PAN-PVDF/PDMS@Fe 3 O 4 ) composite membranes with superhydrophobicity and lipophilicity were prepared by electrospinning technique. By controlling the filling concentration of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, a stable superhydrophobic and lipophilic rough structure was constructed, and micro–nano multilayer rough voids existed inside the membrane. The results showed that the composite fiber membrane exhibited exceptional superhydrophobicity (156.2°), thermal stability (338°C), mechanical properties (tensile strength of 3.0 MPa, elongation of 33.9%), and oil adsorption capacity (30–100 g/g). Moreover, even under corrosive environments, this composite fiber membrane maintained its superhydrophobic properties (above 152°) and achieved high oil–water separation efficiency (above 97%). Remarkably, after 40 cycles, the composite membrane could sustain a separation flux of 5000 L m −2 h −1 . Consequently, the composite fiber membrane manufactured using this strategy exhibits promising potential for applications in oil–water separation.

Preparation and Properties of High-Performance Biobased Polyurea Fiber via Reactive Extrusion

Bochao Pan,Jingyuan Xu,Donglin Tang

Biobased fibers have gradually gained attention with the development of fiber industry due to the characteristics of renewability and environmentally friendliness. For polyureas derived from urea and biobased diamine, the excellent properties such as high strength, high toughness, and rapid crystallization, offer them great potential in the construction and application of fiber materials. It is in this work aiming at constructing high-performance polyurea fibers, taking the problems of poor pulverizability and high melt viscosity into account. A three-step process, including prepolymerization, reactive extrusion, and drawing, was proposed and accomplished to conduct fiber formation for the polyurea. Prepolymerization was carried out via melting polycondensation from urea and 1,10-diaminodecane. The oligomer obtained was then able to be crushed into particles for extrusion. The reactive extrusion in which chain extension took place was conducive to increasing the molecular weight ( M n = 23.2 kg/mol). The obtained fiber was then further drawn at 160°C to increase the crystallinity and as a result, to increase the strength. A reorganization of crystal structure for the drawn yarn can be observed and improved crystallinity was detected. The tensile strength is found to be increased from 45 to 600 MPa after drawing, while the modulus is found to be from 1.1 to 5.9 GPa. It is concluded that the difficulties in the processing and formation of polyurea fiber have been solved in this study. Such technique developed here expands the application fields of polyurea materials and provides a new option for the development of high-performance biobased fibers.

Interfacial Bridging via IPDI-Modified Boron Carbide for Polyurea Coatings With Superior Mechanical and Anti-Corrosion Performance

Hanxin Zhang

Polyurea (PUA) elastomers are highly promising as protective coatings due to their exceptional energy dissipation against dynamic impact. However, conventional PUA suffers from low structural rigidity, and introducing rigid nanofillers often causes severe agglomeration and weak interfacial bonding, thereby hindering the simultaneous improvement of strength and toughness. To address these challenges, an interfacial covalent bridging strategy is developed to prepare isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)-modified boron carbide (m-B 4 C) reinforced polyaspartic ester polyurea (PAE) coatings. Integrating IPDI-assisted mechanical exfoliation with in situ polymerization ensures uniform dispersion and robust filler-matrix covalent bonding. Nanocomposite coatings with 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0 wt% B 4 C or m-B 4 C were prepared; the optimized 0.5 wt% m-B 4 C coating exhibits 27.8 MPa tensile strength, 350% elongation at break, and 37 kN/m tear strength. Notably, the impact strengths of coated aluminum alloy and epoxy substrates reach 461 and 64 kJ/m 2 , successfully overcoming the stiffness-ductility trade-off. Furthermore, the coatings demonstrate exceptional anti-corrosion capabilities, maintaining a high impedance modulus (6.3 × 10 6 Ω cm 2 ) after 14 days in NaCl solution and remarkable rust resistance during 100 h of salt spray testing. These findings elucidate the synergistic energy dissipation and physical barrier mechanism of the rigid-particle/flexible-matrix architecture, providing a pathway toward designing high-performance multifunctional lightweight protective coatings.

Preparation and Performance Evaluation of Surface Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Myricetin via Iniferter Radical Polymerization Technique

Yi-zhen Sun,Shuai-nan Zhang,Xu-zhao Li

In this study, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate-4-vinylbenzyl chloride (PEGMA-EGDMA-VBC, PEV) nanospheres were synthesized using PEGMA, EGDMA, and VBC as copolymerizable monomers, with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a dispersant. Subsequently, using sodium diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate (NaDDC) as the iniferter and employing Iniferter radical polymerization technology with an LED lamp as the UV light source, a novel myricetin surface molecularly imprinted polymer (MYr-MIPs) was successfully prepared. The results showed that the material has a maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of 45.26 mg g −1 and an imprinting factor (IF) of 4.15. It exhibits excellent selectivity for myricetin, with capacity loss < 16% after five adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating good reusability. Characterization by TEM, SEM, FT-IR, BET, EDS, DLS, and TGA confirmed the feasibility of this experimental method, laying the foundation for convenient, rapid, and efficient enrichment of myricetin in complex systems at low concentrations.

A Flexible Strain Sensor With Multi-Spatial-Scale Three-Dimensional Conductive Network for Human Physiological Activity Monitoring

Yue Su,Yanchao Cai,Daiwei Zeng,Na Wen,Tengfei Lin,Fang Wang

This study developed a flexible strain sensor based on a novel polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based conductive nanofiber composite (CNC) featuring a multi-scale three-dimensional (3D) conductive network to overcome the limitations of conventional PDMS films, including low sensitivity and insufficient stretchability. Using electrospinning, PDMS was blended with spinnable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and conductive carbon black (CCB) to fabricate flexible nanocomposite fibers with good stretchability and sensitivity. Subsequently, a mesoscopic 3D conductive network was constructed by loading CCB and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the fiber film surface. This surface network connects with the 3D conductive network formed by CCB within the fiber matrix, ultimately producing a PDMS-based conductive CNC with a multi-scale 3D conductive architecture. This multi-scale structure endows the composite with a wide strain sensing range and fast response (208 ms), while improving tensile strength (3.89 MPa). The material exhibits robust durability under cyclic loading. The resulting wearable sensor possesses good skin affinity and effectively monitors various physiological motions, including joint movements and laryngeal vibration, demonstrating considerable potential for wearable electronics.

Anisotropic Layered Cellulose Nanofiber-Based Carbon Aerogels for High-Performance Pressure Sensing

Shuqi Chen,Xue Yang,Tong Weng,Heyu Wang,Mengyao Qin,Rahman M. D. Mahbubur

Flexible piezoresistive sensors have broad application prospects in fields such as health monitoring and human-machine interaction. To address the challenges of traditional aerogel sensors, including weak mechanical properties, low sensitivity, and poor fatigue resistance, this study constructed a hierarchical biomass-based carbon aerogel (CNF/rGO/CS-B). The material was fabricated using cellulose nanofibers (CNF) as the matrix, graphene oxide (GO) as the precursor for the conductive component, and chitosan (CS) as a reinforcing component through bidirectional freezing, chemical cross-linking, and high-temperature carbonization. The effects of CS addition and freezing modes on the mechanical and sensing properties of the aerogels were systematically investigated. The results indicate that, owing to the synergistic effects of the ordered lamellar structure formed by bidirectional freezing and the stable cross-linked network constructed with the participation of CS, the aerogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, including a compressive strength of 198.8 kPa at 60% strain and outstanding fatigue resistance, with 90% stress retention after 500 cycles at 40% strain. When used as a pressure sensor, it demonstrates high sensitivity (3.06 kPa −1 ) and excellent durability, with signal attenuation of less than 5% over 1500 compression cycles. The sensor can accurately monitor various human motions, such as finger bending and swallowing, providing a promising strategy for the development of high-performance wearable electronic devices.

Fabrication of Fluorosilicone Rubber/MXene/ag Dielectric Elastomer Composites With Enhanced Electromechanical Performances for Flexible Actuator Applications

Yu Zeng,Lu Tang

Dielectric elastomer has attracted much attention for its promising application in soft robots, actuators, and generators. Nevertheless, fluorosilicone rubber (FSR), as a typical dielectric elastomer matrix, possesses inherently low dielectric permittivity, severely limiting its electromechanical actuation performance. To address this issue, two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets and zero-dimensional (0D) Ag nanoparticles were incorporated into FSR via mechanical mixing and hot-pressing to prepare FSR/MXene/Ag composites. Results show that MXene and Ag were dispersed well in the FSR matrix and the composites were thermally stable up to 390°C. A relatively high dielectric permittivity of 16.63 (2.49 times of pure FSR) was achieved at 10 3 Hz for the composite with 1.2 phr (parts per hundred of rubber) MXene and 3.2 phr Ag, while the loss tangent remained below 0.012. This can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the hybrid fillers where the 0D Ag nanoparticles effectively suppress the agglomeration of 2D MXene nanosheets, while the heterogeneous interfaces between MXene/Ag and FSR significantly enhance interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the FSR/MXene/Ag composites not only show improved tensile strength and elongation at break with decreased elastic modulus, but also exhibit enhanced electromechanical sensitivity, achieving a large electromechanical strain of 16.05% (205% increment of pure FSR) under an electric field of 40 kV mm −1 . This work provides a feasible strategy for designing dielectric elastomers with enhanced electromechanical performances.

EPPOSS-Toughened Cyanate Ester Adhesive Films With Low Dielectric Constant and Excellent High-Temperature Resistance

Dianhang Zhu,Wei Li,Fanjun Guo,Kedi Liang,Qianqiang He,Yanjun Hu,Shaowei Lu

POSS-modified cyanate ester adhesives were widely employed in high-frequency communications and medical devices due to their excellent dielectric properties, mechanical properties, and heat resistance. However, for cyanate ester adhesive films, the film-forming ability, viscosity, and bond strength required were highly sensitive to the influence of nanomaterials. Herein, an epoxy-functionalized POSS (EPPOSS) was incorporated to enhance interfacial compatibility, leveraging its epoxy groups to ensure uniform dispersion and mitigate these issues. This strategy simultaneously improved adhesive films' toughness through nanoscale reinforcement. The resulting adhesive films with 5 wt% EPPOSS exhibited a superior room-temperature lap shear strength of 39 MPa, retained 55% (22 MPa) of this strength at 200°C. Furthermore, the dielectric constant of the adhesive film decreased from 3.5 to 3.1 at 1 MHz and dropped to 2.82 at 10 GHz frequencies. This work provides a facile and effective approach to fabricating high-performance cyanate ester adhesive films for demanding applications.
