The lithium metal batteries (LMBs) using Li metal as the anode are becoming one of the representatives of next-generation high-energy–density batteries. However, uneven deposition and stripping of Li usually cause capacity loss during cycling. To address these issues, NO 3 − intercalated LiAl layered double hydroxides (LiAl-LDHs) nanosheets were used as novel solid additives for conventional carbonate electrolytes. The abundant Li + transport pathways brought by LiAl-LDHs and the interlayer NO 3 − in LiAl-LDHs are beneficial to the uniform concentration distribution of Li + and high-quality solid electrolyte interface (SEI), thereby achieving stable deposition/stripping of Li. The assembled Li||Li symmetric cell was cycled stably for 500 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 . The Li||LFP(LiFePO 4 ) full cell had a capacity retention of 90 % after 800 cycles at 1C. Even at a high operating temperature of 50 °C, the Li||Li symmetric cells and Li||LFP full cells can still obtain steady charging-discharging performances.

Electrolyte plays an important role in conducting sodium ions and carrying out chemical/electrochemical reactions. However, the impact mechanism of microscopic solvation structure remains vague but is significant for the electrolyte design. Here we reveal that the inner relationship between solvation structure and electrochemical reaction is manifested intuitively by manipulating the anions in the solvated shell, which determines Na storage kinetics and SEI evolution process. The result elucidates the weak coulomb interaction between PF 6 − and Na + could promote Na + transport number in bulk liquid and Na storage kinetics. And it could induce PF 6 − to reduce preferentially and facilitate additive to enter solvation structure, thereby forming a thin&compact&protective SEI with layered morphology. The excellent SEI would protect anode effectively, inhibiting decomposition of solvents and improving battery performances. As expected, 5 Ah Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 -hard carbon pouch-type batteries with well-matched PF 6 − -based electrolyte display a high specific energy of 129 Wh kg −1 , a superior rate capability with capacity retention of 90 % at 5 C and cycling stability with retention of 86.82 % at 1 C after 700 cycles.

Lithium metal is a Holy Grail anode for high energy density lithium ion batteries . While, its high chemical reactivity and high tendency to form dendrites hinder its wide applications. Here, in this study, we stabilize lithium metal by engineering an artificial SEI layer, namely fabricating a conformal nano-meter thickness amorphous Al 2 O 3 thin film via magnetron sputtering technique on its surface. The obtained Al 2 O 3 modified Li metals present robust chemical surface stability and effectively restrain the dendrite growth. 20 nm-thick Al 2 O 3 film modified lithium metal in an all-solid-state battery Li/PEO-LiTFSI/Li ensures a cycle life of 660 h at a current density of 0.1 mA/cm 2 . Contradicting to a traditional belief of lithium plating at the current collector side via crossing the Al 2 O 3 film, it directly plates on the Al 2 O 3 film next to the separator side. Al 2 O 3 film plays a crucial role as a “surfactant” in inducing a layer-by-layer film growth mode.

Gallium-based liquid alloys that exhibit high capacity and self-healing properties have been demonstrated to be promising cathodes for room temperature liquid metal batteries (RTLMBs). However, the electrochemical performances of these alloys are poor due to severe volume expansion and an unstable solid electrolyte interface layer during the lithiation process. Here, a sol-gel strategy was performed to construct yolk-shell structure nanodroplets (eGaSn@Void@SiO 2 ) that contain sufficient void space by amorphous silicon oxide , which generated a liquid metal electrode with a high performance. The amorphous SiO 2 shells not only play an important role in building stable SEI films, providing efficient electron/ion conduction channels and preventing agglomeration of active substances, but exhibit good elastic behavior during charging/discharging. Due to the appropriate voids in the yolk-shell structure, the eGaSn nanodroplets can expand freely without breaking or disrupting the electrode structure ; thus, the resulting eGaSn@Void@SiO 2 NDs exhibited high capacities of 538, 454, and 338 mA h g −1 at current rates of 0.2, 1 and 5 C, respectively. No obvious decay was observed with more than 500 cycles and a capacity of 377 mA h g −1 at 2 C. Interestingly, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the effective chemisorption between the discharge products and SiO 2 provides sufficient electrical contact sites with a significant drop in electrochemical impedance during cycling. The causes of the superior electrodes performance were investigated in depth using in situ X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations. Our rational design may shed unprecedented light on the development of liquid alloy-based cathodes for high-performance RTLMBs.

Active lithium loss, which is caused by parasitic reactions due to the instability of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the anodes, results in fast capacity fade of batteries. Constructing robust SEI layer is an effective way to reduce active lithium loss. Herein, we propose a AgF-coated separator (AgF-CS) to facilitate robust LiF-rich SEI on the anode during initial cycle. Electrochemical analysis and microstructure investigations confirm the formation of the LiF-rich SEI on the anode induced by the fluoride-containing coating layer. The fluoride-containing interfacial layer not only effectively enhances the reversible capacity of the SiO anode even under lean electrolyte (14 μL mAh −1 ) condition, but also prolongs the cycling life of lithium metal batteries by reducing the consumption of electrolyte and active lithium. The initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of LiFePO 4 ||SiO full cell is increased from 43.68 % to 84.18 % with pretreatment by AgF-CS. As a result, the reversible capacity of LiFePO 4 ||SiO full cell is increased by ∼124 % in contrast with that of the unmodified one. The strategy proposed here, benefiting from the simple manufacture, provides a feasible way to alleviate active lithium loss and elevate energy density of rechargeable lithium batteries.

Lithium metal has been considered one of the most ideal anode materials for batteries due to its ultrahigh theoretical capacity and energy density . However, the unstable SEI layer and the growth of Li dendrites cause poor cycling performance and even safety hazards, which also severely restrict the commercial application of Li metal batteries . In this paper, a Li-In alloy anode was designed and prepared by mechanical rolling of both Li and In pure metal foils together. Three-dimensional Li-In alloy network structures are formed by mechanical alloying during rolling, and the 3D Li-In alloy structure not only possesses strong lithium affinity but also possesses more interface between the Li matrix and the second phase formed in mechanical alloying, which can promote rapid diffusion at the interface and uniform deposition of lithium ions . As a result, the Li-In electrode shows an extremely low overpotential of approximately 35 mV at a high current density of 5 mA cm −2 during the lithium plating/stripping experiment. In addition, the battery revealed a higher discharge capacity of 295 mAh/g at 0.05 C and capacity retention of 80 % after 150 cycles when the Li-In alloy was used as the anode electrode in a cell with Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 as the cathode. The Li-In alloy can also be used as anode of Li-S battery, the result showed that the capacity decay rate was reduced from 0.22 % to 0.1 % after 200 cycles without any decoration treatment of S cathode except conductive carbon. This work verified that indium in the Li-In alloy can effectively protect the lithium anode and provides an idea for the practical application of lithium metal batteries.

The practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is largely hindered by the notorious lithium dendrite growth, low cycle efficiency associated with insufficient electrode–electrolyte interphase dynamics, and electrolyte combustion. Here, an advanced electrolyte using a combination of three kinds of salts dissolved in carbonate-based solvents is developed. The salt anions dominate a primary solvation sheath, resulting in weak interaction between Li + and the solvents, as well as the in situ formation of an inorganic-rich bilayer solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The designed electrolyte enables high cycle stability in LMBs with a high-loading NMC cathode (approximately 20 mg cm −2 ), exhibiting 89.89% capacity retention after 200 cycles with the cutoff voltage of 4.5 V. Cryo-TEM characterization and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the borate-based bilayer SEI, characterized by an exceptional dense structure, effectively suppresses lithium dendrite growth, and certify the crucial role of inorganic component continuity and density within the SEI, which surpasses the absorption and migration energy barrier in terms of significance. This profound understanding of SEI structure holds great potential for advancing the development of high-stable LMBs and can be expanded to other battery system.

Metal foils that alloy with lithium have attracted renewed interest as the issue of continuous solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) growth can be effectively addressed with solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). However, an impractically high pressure is required to maintain the contact between the foils and inorganic SSEs. Here, we show that a soft polymer solid electrolyte can also alleviate the issue of SEI growth for an Al foil anode at a practically low pressure. Unlike liquid electrolytes, the polymer PVDF-HFP does not infiltrate pits and pores formed during Al lithiation, leading to a more uniform reaction and insignificant SEI growth deep in the anode, as shown by microstructural and compositional analyses of both the surface and the cross section of the anode. It thereby significantly boosts the Coulombic efficiency and the cycling stability of the Al foil anode compared to its liquid counterpart. The work unveils a new path to stabilize alloy anodes for safe, inexpensive solid-state batteries.

In lithium metal batteries (LMBs), the uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites not only poses safety risks by potentially piercing the separator and causing short circuits, but also consumes active lithium, significantly reducing the Coulombic efficiency (CE). Moreover, the naturally fragile solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) tends to break and reform repeatedly, leading to sustained electrolyte consumption. In this study, trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate (TMOBF4) is introduced as a dual-functional additive to promote uniform lithium deposition and stabilize the SEI. The TMO+ cation, possessing a lower reduction potential than Li+, preferentially adsorbs at dendrite protrusions, forming an electrostatic shielding layer that redistributes the Li+ flux. This adsorption suppresses localized Li+ accumulation and effectively mitigates dendritic growth. Simultaneously, the BF4– anion is involved in the Li+ solvation structure, significantly reducing the desolvation energy barrier and decomposing during cycling to form LiF, a critical component of a robust SEI. With the additive, the electrochemical performance of lithium cells is remarkably improved. Li||Li symmetric cell exhibits stable cycling stability for 2000 h at 0.5 mA cm–2, and Li||LiFePO4 cells retain 93.0% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1 C. These results present a promising strategy for developing high-performance LMBs.

Both AlCl 3 and pyrrole are simultaneously added to the non-aqueous 1 M LiPF 6 /EC + DMC electrolyte and their combinatorial effects on the electrochemical performance of Li electrode are systematically studied. A composite protective film of Li–Al alloy and lithium pyrrolide is demonstrated on the Li surface. XRD, EDS, XPS and FTIR are applied to characterize the film. AC impedance, cathodic polarization and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling tests are performed to evaluate the electrochemical behaviors of the film. It is indicated that the composite protective film formed on Li metal surface in 0.1 M AlCl 3 and 0.1 M pyrrole containing electrolyte is dense and tight with high stability in the electrolyte, and gives rise to a low interface resistance and a greatly improved cycling efficiency of the lithium metal electrode.

Compared with graphite, the lower sodiation potential and larger discharge capacity of hard carbon (HC) makes it the most promising anode material for sodium-ion battery. Utilizing ether-based electrolyte rather than conventional carbonate-based electrolyte, HC achieves superior electrochemical performance. Nevertheless, the mechanism by which ether-based electrolyte improves the properties of HC is still controversial, primarily focusing on whether it forms solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. In this work, according to the sodium storage mechanisms in HC at low voltage (<0.1 V), including Na + -diglyme co-interaction into the carbon layer (SEI forbidden) and desolvated Na + insertion in the irregular carbon holes (SEI required), the NaPF 6 concentration in ether-based electrolyte was regulated, so as to construct a discontinuous-SEI on the surface of the HC anode, which significantly enhances the electrochemical performances of HC. Specifically, with 0.2 M NaPF 6 ether-based electrolyte, HC deliverers a discharge capacity of 459.7 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C and stays at 357.2 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C, which is substantially higher than that of higher/lower salt concentration electrolytes.

The electrode/electrolyte interfaces play an important role in the electrochemical reaction kinetics to alleviate the severe polarization and voltage hysteresis in lithium primary batteries. Herein, C 5 F 5 N is proposed as an electrolyte additive to tune the characteristics of the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The Li/CF x primary battery with C 5 F 5 N additive exhibits an excellent discharge-specific capacity of 981.4 mAh g −1 (0.1 C), a remarkable high-rate capability of 598 mAh g −1 (15 C), and an outstanding energy/power density of 1068.7 Wh kg −1 /24362.5 W kg −1 . It also shows remarkable storage performance with 717.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C after storage at 55 °C for 2 months. The excellent performance of the Li/CF x batteries is closely related to the improved and stable Li 3 N/LiF-rich homogeneous interfaces induced by the C 5 F 5 N additive, which results in uniform distribution of Li + flux, facilitated electrochemical kinetics, and increased rate capability of Li/CF x battery. Therefore, C 5 F 5 N is expected to be a promising electrolyte additive, and the related electrode/electrolyte interface engineering provides an effective and facile strategy to increase the performance of the lithium primary battery.
